The socle tableau as a dual version of the Littlewood-Richardson tableau
Published in J. London Math. Soc (2) 106 (2022), 1357-1379 • View PublicationBIB
Like the LR-tableau, a socle tableau is given as a skew diagram with certain entries. Unlike in the LR-tableau, the entries in the socle tableau are weakly increasing in each row, strictly increasing in each column and satisfy a modified lattice permutation property. In the study of embeddings of a subgroup in a finite abelian $p$-group, socle tableaux occur as isomorphism invariants, they are given by the socle series of the subgroup. We show that each socle tableau can be realized by some embedding. Moreover, the socle tableau of an embedding and the LR-tableau of the dual embedding determine each other.

Some unexpected properties of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients
Published • View PublicationBIB
We are interested in identities between Littlewood-Richardson coefficients, and hence in comparing different tensor product decompositions of the irreducible modules of the linear group GL n (C). A family of partitions-called near-rectangular-is defined, and we prove a stability result which basically asserts that the decomposition of the tensor product of two representations associated to near-rectangular partitions does not depend on n. Given a partition $λ$, of length at most n, denote by V n ($λ$) the associated simple GL n (C)-module. We conjecture that, if $λ$ is near-rectangular and $μ$ any partition, the decompositions of V n ($λ$) $\otimes$ V n ($μ$) and V n ($λ$) * $\otimes$ V n ($μ$) coincide modulo a mysterious bijection. We prove this conjecture if $μ$ is also near-rectangular and report several computer-assisted computations which reinforce our conjecture.

Newell-Littlewood numbers
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 374 (2021), 6331-6366 • View PublicationBIB
The Newell-Littlewood numbers are defined in terms of their celebrated cousins, the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. Both arise as tensor product multiplicities for a classical Lie group. They are the structure coefficients of the K. Koike-I. Terada basis of the ring of symmetric functions. Recent work of H. Hahn studies them, motivated by R. Langlands' beyond endoscopy proposal; we address her work with a simple characterization of detection of Weyl modules. This motivates further study of the combinatorics of the numbers. We consider analogues of ideas of J. De Loera-T. McAllister, H. Derksen-J. Weyman, S. Fomin-W. Fulton-C.-K. Li-Y.-T. Poon, W. Fulton, R. King-C. Tollu-F. Toumazet, M. Kleber, A. Klyachko, A. Differential operators on Schur and Schubert polynomials
This paper deals with decreasing operators on back stable Schubert polynomials. We study two operators $ξ$ and $\nabla$ of degree $-1$, which satisfy the Leibniz rule. Furthermore, we show that all other such operators are linear combinations of $ξ$ and $\nabla$. For the case of Schur functions, these two operators fully determine the product of Schur functions, i.e., it is possible to define the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients only from $ξ$ and $\nabla$. This new point of view on Schur functions gives us an elementary proof of the Giambelli identity and of Jacobi-Trudi identities. For the case of Schubert polynomials, we construct a bigger class of decreasing operators as expressions in terms of $ξ$ and $\nabla$, which are indexed by Young diagrams. Surprisingly, these operators are related to Stanley symmetric functions. In particular, we extend bosonic operators from Schur to Schubert polynomials.

Large Deviation Principles via Spherical Integrals
Published in Prob. Math. Phys. 3 (2022) 543-625 • View PublicationBIB
In this article, we develop a framework to study the large deviation principle for matrix models and their quantized versions, by tilting the measures using the limits of spherical integrals obtained in [46,47]. As examples, we obtain 1. a large deviation principle for the empirical distribution of the diagonal entries of $UB_NU^*$, for a sequence of $N\times N$ diagonal matrices $B_N$ and unitary Haar distributed matrices $U$; 2. a large deviation upper bound for the empirical eigenvalue distribution of $A_N+UB_NU^*$, for two sequences of $N\times N$ diagonal matrices $A_N, B_N$, and their complementary lower bounds at measures which are described by the free product with amalgamation; 3. a large deviation principle for the Kostka number $K_{\boldsymbolλ_N \boldsymbolη_N}$, for two sequences of partitions $\boldsymbolλ_N, \boldsymbolη_N$ with at most $N$ rows; 4. a large deviation upper bound for the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients $c_{\boldsymbolλ_N \boldsymbol η_N}^{\boldsymbol κ_N}$, for three sequences of partitions $\boldsymbolλ_N, \boldsymbol η_N, \boldsymbol κ_N$ with at most $N$ rows, and their complementary lower bounds at nice measures.

The 144 symmetries of the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients of $SL_3$
We compute with SageMath the group of all linear symmetries for the Littlewood-Richardson associated to the representations of $SL_3$. We find that there are 144 symmetries, more than the 12 symmetries known for the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients in general.

On the Shifted Littlewood-Richardson Coefficients and Littlewood-Richardson Coefficients
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 26, volume 26 (2022), 221-260 • View PublicationBIB
We give a new interpretation of the shifted Littlewood-Richardson coefficients $f_{λμ}^ν$ ($λ,μ,ν$ are strict partitions). The coefficients $g_{λμ}$ which appear in the decomposition of Schur $Q$-function $Q_λ$ into the sum of Schur functions $Q_λ= 2^{l(λ)}\sum_μg_{λμ}s_μ$ can be considered as a special case of $f_{λμ}^ν$ (here $λ$ is a strict partition of length $l(λ)$). We also give another description for $g_{λμ}$ as the cardinal of a subset of a set that counts Littlewood-Richardson coefficients $c_{μ^tμ}^{\tildeλ}$. This new point of view allows us to establish connections between $g_{λμ}$ and $c_{μ^t μ}^{\tildeλ}$. More precisely, we prove that $g_{λμ}=g_{λμ^t}$, and $g_{λμ} \leq c_{μ^tμ}^{\tildeλ}$. We conjecture that $g_{λμ}^2 \leq c^{\tildeλ}_{μ^tμ}$ and formulate some conjectures on our combinatorial models which would imply this inequality if it is valid.

On the product of generating functions for domino and bi-tableaux
The connection between the generating functions of various sets of tableaux and the appropriate families of quasisymmetric functions is a significant tool to give a direct analytical proof of some advanced bijective results and provide new combinatorial formulas. In this paper we focus on two kinds of type B Littlewood-Richardson coefficients and derive new formulas using weak composition quasisymmetric functions and Chow's quasisymmetric functions. In the type A case these coefficients give the multiplication table for Schur functions, i.e. the generating functions for classical Young tableaux. We look at their generalisations involving a set of bi-tableaux and domino tableaux.

Crystal structure on King tableaux and semistandard oscillating tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 1976, King defined certain tableaux model, called King tableaux in this paper, counting weight multiplicities of irreducible representation of the symplectic group $Sp(2m)$ for a given dominant weight. Since Kashiwara defined crystals, it is an open problem to provide a crystal structure on King tableaux. In this paper, we present crystal structures on King tableaux and semistandard oscillating tableaux. The semistandard oscillating tableaux naturally appear as $Q$-tableaux in the symplectic version of RSK algorithms. As an application, we discuss Littlewood-Richardson coefficients for $Sp(2m)$ in terms of semistandard oscillating tableaux.

Box splines, tensor product multiplicities and the volume function
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the relationship between the tensor product multiplicities of a compact semisimple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ and a special function $\mathcal{J}$ associated to $\mathfrak{g}$, called the volume function. The volume function arises in connection with the randomized Horn's problem in random matrix theory and has a related significance in symplectic geometry. Building on box spline deconvolution formulae of Dahmen-Micchelli and De Concini-Procesi-Vergne, we develop new techniques for computing the multiplicities from $\mathcal{J}$, answering a question posed by Coquereaux and Zuber. In particular, we derive an explicit algebraic formula for a large class of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients in terms of $\mathcal{J}$. We also give analogous results for weight multiplicities, and we show a number of further identities relating the tensor product multiplicities, the volume function and the box spline. To illustrate these ideas, we give new proofs of some known theorems.

Flagged Littlewood-Richardson tableaux and branching rule for classical groups
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, 181, (2021), 105419 • View PublicationBIB
We give a new formula for the branching rule from ${\rm GL}_n$ to ${\rm O}_n$ generalizing the Littlewood's restriction formula. The formula is given in terms of Littlewood-Richardson tableaux with certain flag conditions which vanish in a stable range. As an application, we give a combinatorial formula for the Lusztig $t$-weight multiplicity $K_{μ0}(t)$ of type $B_n$ and $D_n$ with highest weight $μ$ and weight $0$.
Equivariant cohomology, Schubert calculus, and edge labeled tableaux
Published in Facets of algebraic geometry. Vol. II, 284--335, London Math. Soc. Lecture Note Ser., 473, Cambridge Univ. Press, Cambridge, 2022 • View PublicationBIB
This chapter concerns edge labeled Young tableaux, introduced by H. Thomas and the third author. It is used to model equivariant Schubert calculus of Grassmannians. We survey results, problems, conjectures, together with their influences from combinatorics, algebraic and symplectic geometry, linear algebra, and computational complexity. We report on a new shifted analogue of edge labeled tableaux. Conjecturally, this gives a Littlewood-Richardson rule for the structure constants of the D. Anderson-W. Fulton ring, which is related to the equivariant cohomology of isotropic Grassmannians.

Set-valued Rothe Tableaux and Grothendieck Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
The notion of set-valued Young tableaux was introduced by Buch in his study of the Littlewood-Richardson rule for stable Grothendieck polynomials. Knutson, Miller and Yong showed that the double Grothendieck polynomials of 2143-avoiding permutations can be generated by set-valued Young tableaux. In this paper, we introduce the structure of set-valued Rothe tableaux of permutations. Given the Rothe diagram $D(w)$ of a permutation $w$, a set-valued Rothe tableau of shape $D(w)$ is a filling of finite nonempty subsets of positive integers into the squares of $D(w)$ such that the rows are weakly decreasing and the columns are strictly increasing. We show that the double Grothendieck polynomials of 1432-avoiding permutations can be generated by set-valued Rothe tableaux. When restricted to 321-avoiding permutations, our formula specializes to the tableau formula for double Grothendieck polynomials due to Matsumura. Employing the properties of tableau complexes given by Knutson, Miller and Yong, we obtain two alternative tableau formulas for the double Grothendieck polynomials of 1432-avoiding permutations.

Skew key polynomials and a generalized Littlewood-Richardson rule
Published • View PublicationBIB
Young's lattice is a partial order on integer partitions whose saturated chains correspond to standard Young tableaux, one type of combinatorial object that generates the Schur basis for symmetric functions. Generalizing Young's lattice, we introduce a new partial order on weak compositions that we call the key poset. Saturated chains in this poset correspond to standard key tableaux, the combinatorial objects that generate the key polynomials, a nonsymmetric polynomial generalization of the Schur basis. Generalizing skew Schur functions, we define skew key polynomials in terms of this new poset. Using weak dual equivalence, we give a nonnegative weak composition Littlewood-Richardson rule for the key expansion of skew key polynomials, generalizing the flagged Littlewood-Richardson rule of Reiner and Shimozono.

A Sundaram type bijection for $\mathrm{SO}(2k+1)$: vacillating tableaux and pairs consisting of a standard Young tableau and an orthogonal Littlewood-Richardson tableau
We present a bijection between vacillating tableaux and pairs consisting of a standard Young tableau and an orthogonal Littlewood-Richardson tableau for the special orthogonal group $\mathrm{SO}(2k+1)$. This bijection is motivated by the direct-sum-decomposition of the $r$th tensor power of the defining representation of $\mathrm{SO}(2k+1)$. To formulate it, we use Kwon's orthogonal Littlewood-Richardson tableaux and introduce new alternative tableaux they are in bijection with. Moreover we use a suitably defined descent set for vacillating tableaux to determine the quasi-symmetric expansion of the Frobenius characters of the isotypic components.

A classification of monotone ribbons with full Schur support with application to the classification of full equivalence classes
We consider ribbon shapes, not necessarily connected, whose rows, with at least two boxes in each, are in monotone length order. These ribbons are uniquely defined by a pair of partitions: the row partition consisting of the row lengths in decreasing order, and the overlapping partition whose entries count the total number of columns with two boxes in the successive ribbon shapes obtained by sequentially subtracting the longest row. The support of such ribbon Schur functions, considered as a subposet of the dominance order lattice on partitions, has the row partition as bottom element, and, as top element, the partition whose two parts consist of the total number of columns, and the total number of columns of length two respectively. We give a complete system of linear inequalities in terms of the partition pair defining the aforesaid ribbon shape under which the ribbon Schur function attains all the Schur interval when expanded in the basis of Schur functions. We then conclude that the Gaetz-Hardt-Sridhar necessary condition for a connected ribbon to have full equivalence class is equivalent to the condition for a monotone connected ribbon to have full Schur support. That is, the set of partitions with full equivalence class is a subset of those monotone connected ribbons with full Schur support. M. Gaetz, W. Hardt and S. Sridhar conjectured that the necessary condition is also sufficient which translates now to every monotone connected ribbon with full Schur support has full equivalence class. The main tool of our analysis is the structure of the companion tableau of a ribbon Littlewood-Richardson (LR) tableau detected by the descent set defined by the composition whose parts are the ribbon row lengths.

The genomic Schur function is fundamental-positive
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 24, no. 1, 2020, 95-108 • View PublicationBIB
In work with A. Yong, the author introduced genomic tableaux to prove the first positive combinatorial rule for the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients in torus-equivariant $K$-theory of Grassmannians. We then studied the genomic Schur function $U_λ$, a generating function for such tableaux, showing that it is non-trivially a symmetric function, although generally not Schur-positive. Here we show that $U_λ$ is, however, positive in the basis of fundamental quasisymmetric functions. We give a positive combinatorial formula for this expansion in terms of gapless increasing tableaux; this is, moreover, the first finite expression for $U_λ$. Combined with work of A. Garsia and J. Remmel, this yields a compact combinatorial (but necessarily non-positive) formula for the Schur expansion of $U_λ$.
