Multiple Laguerre polynomials: Combinatorial model and Stieltjes moment representation
Published in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 150, 1997--2005 (2022) • View PublicationBIB
I give a combinatorial interpretation of the multiple Laguerre polynomials of the first kind of type II, generalizing the digraph model found by Foata and Strehl for the ordinary Laguerre polynomials. I also give an explicit integral representation for these polynomials, which shows that they form a multidimensional Stieltjes moment sequence whenever $x \le 0$.

Interpolation polynomials, bar monomials, and their positivity
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove a positivity result for interpolation polynomials that was conjectured by Knop and Sahi. These polynomials were first introduced by Sahi in the context of the Capelli eigenvalue problem for Jordan algebras, and were later shown to be related to Jack polynomials by Knop-Sahi and Okounkov-Olshanski. The positivity result proved here is an inhomogeneous generalization of Macdonald's positivity conjecture for Jack polynomials. We also formulate and prove the non-symmetric version of the Knop-Sahi conjecture, and in fact we deduce everything from an even stronger positivity result. This last result concerns certain inhomogeneous analogues of ordinary monomials that we call bar monomials. Their positivity involves in an essential way a new partial order on compositions that we call the bar order, and a new operation that we call a glissade.
Quantitative characteristics of cycles and their relations with stretch and spanning tree congestion
The main goal of this article is to introduce new quantitative characteristics of cycles in finite simple connected graphs and to establish relations of these characteristics with the stretch and spanning tree congestion of graphs. The main new parameter is named the support number. We give a polynomial approximation algorithm for the support number with the aid of yet another characteristic we introduce, named the cycle width of the graph.

Polynomial bounds for chromatic number. I. Excluding a biclique and an induced tree
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let H be a tree. It was proved by Rodl that graphs that do not contain H as an induced subgraph, and do not contain the complete bipartite graph $K_{t,t}$ as a subgraph, have bounded chromatic number. Kierstead and Penrice strengthened this, showing that such graphs have bounded degeneracy. Here we give a further strengthening, proving that for every tree H, the degeneracy is at most polynomial in t. This answers a question of Bonamy, Pilipczuk, Rzazewski, Thomasse and Walczak.

Symmetry reduction to optimize a graph-based polynomial from queueing theory
Published in SIAM Journal on Applied Algebra and Geometry, 6 (2022), 243-266 • View PublicationBIB
For given integers $n$ and $d$, both at least 2, we consider a homogeneous multivariate polynomial $f_d$ of degree $d$ in variables indexed by the edges of the complete graph on $n$ vertices and coefficients depending on cardinalities of certain unions of edges. Cardinaels, Borst and Van Leeuwaarden (arXiv:2111.05777, 2021) asked whether $f_d$, which arises in a model of job-occupancy in redundancy scheduling, attains its minimum over the standard simplex at the uniform probability vector. Brosch, Laurent and Steenkamp [SIAM J. Optim. 31 (2021), 2227--2254] proved that $f_d$ is convex over the standard simplex if $d=2$ and $d=3$, implying the desired result for these $d$. We give a symmetry reduction to show that for fixed $d$, the polynomial is convex over the standard simplex (for all $n\geq 2$) if a constant number of constant matrices (with size and coefficients independent of $n$) are positive semidefinite. This result is then used in combination with a computer-assisted verification to show that the polynomial $f_d$ is convex for $d\leq 9$.

On several notions of complexity of polynomial progressions
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a polynomial progression $$(x,\; x+P_1(y),\; \ldots,\; x+P_{t}(y)),$$ we define four notions of complexity: Host-Kra complexity, Weyl complexity, true complexity and algebraic complexity. The first two describe the smallest characteristic factor of the progression, the third one refers to the smallest-degree Gowers norm controlling the progression, and the fourth one concerns algebraic relations between terms of the progressions. We conjecture that these four notions are equivalent, which would give a purely algebraic criterion for determining the smallest Host-Kra factor or the smallest Gowers norm controlling a given progression. We prove this conjecture for all progressions whose terms only satisfy homogeneous algebraic relations and linear combinations thereof. This family of polynomial progressions includes, but is not limited to, arithmetic progressions, progressions with linearly independent polynomials $P_1,\; \ldots,\; P_t$ and progressions whose terms satisfy no quadratic relations. For progressions that satisfy only linear relations, such as $$(x,\; x+y^2,\; x+2y^2,\; x+y^3,\; x+2y^3),$$ we derive several combinatorial and dynamical corollaries: (1) an estimate for the count of such progressions in subsets of cyclic groups or totally ergodic dynamical systems; (2) a lower bound for multiple recurrence; (3) and a popular common difference result in cyclic groups. Lastly, we show that Weyl complexity and algebraic complexity always agree, which gives a straightforward algebraic description of Weyl complexity.
Chromatic symmetric functions of Dyck paths and q-rook theory
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, Vol 107 (2023) 103595 • View PublicationBIB
The chromatic symmetric function (CSF) of Dyck paths of Stanley and its Shareshian-Wachs $q$-analogue have important connections to Hessenberg varieties, diagonal harmonics and LLT polynomials. In the, so called, abelian case they are also curiously related to placements of non-attacking rooks by results of Stanley-Stembridge (1993) and Guay-Paquet (2013). For the $q$-analogue, these results have been generalized by Abreu-Nigro (2020) and Guay-Paquet (private communication), using $q$-hit numbers. Among our main results is a new proof of Guay-Paquet's elegant identity expressing the $q$-CSFs in a CSF basis with $q$-hit coefficients. We further show its equivalence to the Abreu-Nigro identity expanding the $q$-CSF in the elementary symmetric functions. In the course of our work we establish that the $q$-hit numbers in these expansions differ from the originally assumed Garsia-Remmel $q$-hit numbers by certain powers of $q$. We prove new identities for these $q$-hit numbers, and establish connections between the three different variants.
Extending two families of maximum rank distance codes
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we provide a large family of rank-metric codes, which contains properly the codes recently found by Longobardi and Zanella (2021) and by Longobardi, Marino, Trombetti and Zhou (2021). These codes are $\mathbb{F}_{q^{2t}}$-linear of dimension $2$ in the space of linearized polynomials over $\mathbb{F}_{q^{2t}}$, where $t$ is any integer greater than $2$, and we prove that they are maximum rank distance codes. For $t\ge 5$, we determine their equivalence classes and these codes turn out to be inequivalent to any other construction known so far, and hence they are really new.

Geometric Combinatorics of Polynomials I: The Case of a Single Polynomial
Published • View PublicationBIB
There are many different algebraic, geometric and combinatorial objects that one can attach to a complex polynomial with distinct roots. In this article we introduce a new object that encodes many of the existing objects that have previously appeared in the literature. Concretely, for every complex polynomial $p$ with $d$ distinct roots and degree at least 2, we produce a canonical compact planar 2-complex that is a compact metric version of a tiled phase diagram. It has a locally CAT(0) metric that is locally Euclidean away from a finite set of interior points indexed by the critical points of $p$, and each of its 2-cells is a metric rectangle. From this planar rectangular 2-complex one can use metric graphs known as metric cacti and metric banyans to read off several pieces of combinatorial data: a chain in the partition lattice, a cyclic factorization of a d-cycle, a real noncrossing partition (also known as a primitive d-major), and the monodromy permutations for the polynomial. This article is the first in a series.

Towards a dichotomy for the switch list homomorphism problem for signed graphs
Published in Kyungpook Math. J. 63(2023), pp. 355-372 • View PublicationBIB
We make advances towards a structural characterisation of the signed graphs $H$ for which the list switch $H$-colouring problem $\operatorname{LSwHom}(H)$ problem is polynomial time solvable. We conjecture a characterisation for signed graphs that can be switched to graphs such that every negative edge is also positive, and prove the characterisation in the case that the signed graph is reflexive.

Combinatorial Bounds in Distal Structures
Published in J. symb. log. 90 (2025) 1377-1409 • View PublicationBIB
We provide polynomial upper bounds for the minimal sizes of distal cell decompositions in several kinds of distal structures, particularly weakly $o$-minimal and $P$-minimal structures. The bound in general weakly $o$-minimal structures generalizes the vertical cell decomposition for semialgebraic sets, and the bounds for vector spaces in both $o$-minimal and $p$-adic cases are tight. We apply these bounds to Zarankiewicz's problem and sum-product bounds in distal structures.

$q$-Supercongruences from Jackson's $_8φ_7$ summation and Watson's $_8φ_7$ transformation
$q$-Supercongruences modulo the fifth and sixth powers of a cyclotomic polynomial are very rare in the literature. In this paper, we establish some $q$-supercongruences modulo the fifth and sixth powers of a cyclotomic polynomial in terms of Jackson's $_8φ_7$ summation, Watson's $_8φ_7$ transformation, the creative microscoping method recently introduced by Guo and Zudilin, and the Chinese remainder theorem for coprime polynomials. More concretely, we give a $q$-analogue of a nice formula due to Long and Ramakrishna [Adv. Math. 290 (2016), 773--808] and two $q$-supercongruences involving double series.

Multigraded algebras and multigraded linear series
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper is devoted to the study of multigraded algebras and multigraded linear series. For an $\mathbb{N}^s$-graded algebra $A$, we define and study its volume function $F_A:\mathbb{N}_+^s\to \mathbb{R}$, which computes the asymptotics of the Hilbert function of $A$. We relate the volume function $F_A$ to the volume of the fibers of the global Newton-Okounkov body $Δ(A)$ of $A$. Unlike the classical case of standard multigraded algebras, the volume function $F_A$ is not a polynomial in general. However, in the case when the algebra $A$ has a decomposable grading, we show that the volume function $F_A$ is a polynomial with non-negative coefficients. We then define mixed multiplicities in this case and provide a full characterization for their positivity. Furthermore, we apply our results on multigraded algebras to multigraded linear series. Our work recovers and unifies recent developments on mixed multiplicities. In particular, we recover results on the existence of mixed multiplicities for (not necessarily Noetherian) graded families of ideals and on the positivity of the multidegrees of multiprojective varieties.

Set superpartitions and superspace duality modules
Published • View PublicationBIB
The superspace ring $Ω_n$ is a rank $n$ polynomial ring tensor a rank $n$ exterior algebra. Using an extension of the Vandermonde determinant to $Ω_n$, the authors previously defined a family of doubly graded quotients $\mathbb{W}_{n,k}$ of $Ω_n$ which carry an action of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ and satisfy a bigraded version of Poincaré Duality. In this paper, we examine the duality modules $\mathbb{W}_{n,k}$ in greater detail. We describe a monomial basis of $\mathbb{W}_{n,k}$ and give combinatorial formulas for its bigraded Hilbert and Frobenius series. These formulas involve new combinatorial objects called {\em ordered superpartitions}. These are ordered set partitions $(B_1 \mid \cdots \mid B_k)$ of $\{1,\dots,n\}$ in which the non-minimal elements of any block $B_i$ may be barred or unbarred.

Positroid Catalan numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a permutation $f$, we study the positroid Catalan number $C_f$ defined to be the torus-equivariant Euler characteristic of the associated open positroid variety. We introduce a class of repetition-free permutations and show that the corresponding positroid Catalan numbers count Dyck paths avoiding a convex subset of the rectangle. We show that any convex subset appears in this way. Conjecturally, the associated $q,t$-polynomials coincide with the generalized $q,t$-Catalan numbers that recently appeared in relation to the shuffle conjecture, flag Hilbert schemes, and Khovanov-Rozansky homology of Coxeter links.

Notes about KP/BKP correspondence

I present a set of remarks related to joint works \cite{paper1},\cite{paper2},\cite{paper3},\cite{MMNO}. These are remarks about polynomials solutions and vertex operators, eigenproblem for polynomials and a remark related to the the conjecture of Alexandrov and Mironov, Morozov about the ratios of the projective Schur functions. New results on the bilinear relations between characters of the symmetric and of the Sergeev group and on bilinear relations between skew Schur and projective Schur functions and also between shifted Schur and projective Schur functions are added. Certain new matrix models are considered and a comment on Mironov-Morozov-Natanzon cut-and-join relation is added.

Equivalences of LLT polynomials via lattice paths
Published • View PublicationBIB
The LLT polynomials $\mathcal{L}_{\mathbfβ/\mathbfγ} (X;t)$ are a family of symmetric polynomials indexed by a tuple of (possibly skew-)partitions $\mathbfβ/\mathbfγ= (β^{(1)}/γ^{(1)},\ldots,β^{(k)}/γ^{(k)})$. It has recently been shown that these polynomials can be seen as the partition function of a certain vertex model whose boundary conditions are determined by $\mathbfβ/\mathbfγ$. In this paper we describe an algorithm which gives a bijection between the configurations of the vertex model with boundary condition $\mathbfβ/\mathbfγ = (β^{(1)}/γ^{(1)},β^{(2)}/γ^{(2)})$ and those with boundary condition $(\mathbfβ/\mathbfγ)_{swap} = (β^{(2)}/γ^{(2)},β^{(1)}/γ^{(1)})$. We prove a sufficient condition for when this bijection is weight-preserving up to an overall factor of $t$, which in turn implies that the corresponding LLT polynomials are equal up to the same overall factor. Using these techniques, we are also able to systematically determine linear relations within families of LLT polynomials.

A Combinatorial Description of Certain Polynomials Related to the XYZ Spin Chain. II. The Polynomials $p_n$
Published in SIGMA 18 (2022), 036, 20 pages • View PublicationBIB
By specializing the parameters in the partition function of the 8VSOS model with domain wall boundary conditions and diagonal reflecting end, we find connections between the three-color model and certain polynomials $p_n(z)$, which are conjectured to be equal to certain polynomials of Bazhanov and Mangazeev, appearing in the eigenvectors of the Hamiltonian of the supersymmetric XYZ spin chain. This article is a continuation of a previous paper where we investigated the related polynomials $q_n(z)$, also conjectured to be equal to polynomials of Bazhanov and Mangazeev, appearing in the eigenvectors of the supersymmetric XYZ spin chain.

Peaks are preserved under run-sorting
Published in ECA 2:1 (2022) Article S2R2, http://ecajournal.haifa.ac.il/Volume2022/ECA2022_S2A2.pdf • View PublicationBIB
We study a sorting procedure (run-sorting) on permutations, where runs are rearranged in lexicographic order. We describe a rather surprising bijection on permutations on length $n$, with the property that it sends the set of peak-values to the set of peak-values after run-sorting. We also prove that the expected number of descents in a permutation $σ\in S_{n}$ after run-sorting is equal to $(n-2)/3$. Moreover, we provide a closed form of the exponential generating function introduced by Nabawanda, Rakotondrajao and Bamunoba in 2020, for the number of run-sorted permutations of $[n]$, ($RSP(n)$) having $k$ runs, which gives a new interpretation to the sequence A124324 in the Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences. We show that the descent generating polynomials, $A_{n}(t)$ for $RSP(n)$ are real rooted, and satisfy an interlacing property similar to that satisfied by the Eulerian polynomials. Finally, we study run-sorted binary words and compute the expected number of descents after run-sorting a binary word of length $n$.
