On the enumeration of restricted words over a finite alphabet
Published in J. Integer Seq. 19 (2016), Article 16.1.3 • Search Publication
We present a method for the enumeration of restricted words over a finite alphabet. Restrictions are described through the inclusion or exclusion of suitable building blocks used to construct the words by concatenation. Our approach, which relies on the invert transform and its representation in terms of partial Bell polynomials, allows us to generalize and address in a systematic manner previous results in the subject.

The $q$-analog of Kostant's partition function and the highest root of the classical Lie algebras
Kostant's partition function counts the number of ways to represent a particular vector (weight) as a nonnegative integral sum of positive roots of a Lie algebra. For a given weight the $q$-analog of Kostant's partition function is a polynomial where the coefficient of $q^k$ is the number of ways the weight can be written as a nonnegative integral sum of exactly $k$ positive roots. In this paper we determine generating functions for the $q$-analog of Kostant's partition function when the weight in question is the highest root of the classical Lie algebras of types $B$, $C$ and $D$.

Dual braid monoids, Mikado braids and positivity in Hecke algebras
Published in Math. Z. 285 (2017) 215--238 • View PublicationBIB
We study the rational permutation braids, that is the elements of an Artin-Tits group of spherical type which can be written $x^{-1} y$ where $x$ and $y$ are prefixes of the Garside element of the braid monoid. We give a geometric characterization of these braids in type $A_n$ and $B_n$ and then show that in spherical types different from $D_n$ the simple elements of the dual braid monoid (for arbitrary choice of Coxeter element) embedded in the braid group are rational permutation braids (we conjecture this to hold also in type $D_n$).This property implies positivity properties of the polynomials arising in the linear expansion of their images in the Iwahori-Hecke algebra when expressed in the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis. In type $A_n$, it implies positivity properties of their images in the Temperley-Lieb algebra when expressed in the diagram basis.
On zeros of a polynomial in a finite grid
Published • View PublicationBIB
A 1993 result of Alon and Füredi gives a sharp upper bound on the number of zeros of a multivariate polynomial over an integral domain in a finite grid, in terms of the degree of the polynomial. This result was recently generalized to polynomials over an arbitrary commutative ring, assuming a certain "Condition (D)" on the grid which holds vacuously when the ring is a domain. In the first half of this paper we give a further Generalized Alon-Füredi Theorem which provides a sharp upper bound when the degrees of the polynomial in each variable are also taken into account. This yields in particular a new proof of Alon-Füredi. We then discuss the relationship between Alon-Füredi and results of DeMillo-Lipton, Schwartz and Zippel. A direct coding theoretic interpretation of Alon-Füredi Theorem and its generalization in terms of Reed--Muller type affine variety codes is shown which gives us the minimum Hamming distance of these codes. Then we apply the Alon-Füredi Theorem to quickly recover (and sometimes strengthen) old and new results in finite geometry, including the Jamison/Brouwer-Schrijver bound on affine blocking sets. We end with a discussion of multiplicity enhancements.

An extension of MacMahon's Equidistribution Theorem to ordered multiset partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
A classical result of MacMahon states that inversion number and major index have the same distribution over permutations of a given multiset. In this work we prove a strengthening of this theorem originally conjectured by Haglund. Our result can be seen as an equidistribution theorem over the ordered partitions of a multiset into sets, which we call ordered multiset partitions. Our proof is bijective and involves a new generalization of Carlitz's insertion method. This generalization leads to a new extension of Macdonald polynomials for hook shapes. We use our main theorem to show that these polynomials are symmetric and we give their Schur expansion.

Additive equations in dense variables via truncated restriction estimates
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study translation-invariant additive equations of the form $\sum_{i=1}^s λ_i \mathbf{P}(\mathbf{n}_i) = 0$ in variables $\mathbf{n}_i \in \mathbb{Z}^d$, where the $λ_i$ are nonzero integers summing to zero, and $\mathbf{P}$ is a system of homogeneous polynomials such that the above equation is invariant by translation. We investigate the solvability of this equation in subsets of density $(\log N)^{-c(\mathbf{P},\mathbfλ)}$ of a large box $[N]^d$, via the energy increment method. We obtain positive results in roughly the number of variables currently needed to derive a count of the solutions in the complete box $[N]^d$, for the curve $\mathbf{P} = (x,\dots,x^k)$ and the multidimensional systems of large degree studied by Parsell, Prendiville and Wooley, using only a weak form of restriction estimates. We also obtain results for the $(d+1)$-dimensional parabola $\mathbf{P}=(x_1,\dots,x_d,x_1^2+\dotsb+x_d^2)$ that rely on the recent Strichartz estimates of Bourgain and Demeter.
A Dichotomy Theorem for Circular Colouring Reconfiguration
Published • View PublicationBIB
The "reconfiguration problem" for circular colourings asks, given two $(p,q)$-colourings $f$ and $g$ of a graph $G$, is it possible to transform $f$ into $g$ by changing the colour of one vertex at a time such that every intermediate mapping is a $(p,q)$-colouring? We show that this problem can be solved in polynomial time for $2\leq p/q <4$ and is PSPACE-complete for $p/q\geq 4$. This generalizes a known dichotomy theorem for reconfiguring classical graph colourings.

Strange Expectations
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let gcd(a,b)=1. J. Olsson and D. Stanton proved that the maximum number of boxes in a simultaneous (a,b)-core is (a^2-1)(b^2-1)/24, and that this maximum was achieved by a unique core. P. Johnson combined Ehrhart theory with the polynomial method to prove D. Armstrong's conjecture that the expected number of boxes in a simultaneous (a,b)-core is (a-1)(b-1)(a+b+1)/24. We extend P. Johnson's method to compute the variance to be ab(a-1)(b-1)(a+b)(a+b+1)/1440. By extending the definitions of "simultaneous cores" and "number of boxes" to affine Weyl groups, we give uniform generalizations of all three formulae above to simply-laced affine types. We further explain the appearance of the number 24 using the "strange formula" of H. Freudenthal and H. de Vries.

On Polynomial Identities for Recursive Sequences

In this paper we extend the notion of Melham sum to the Pell and Pell-Lucas sequences. While the proofs of general statements rely on the binomial theorem, we prove some spacial cases by the known Pell identities. We also give extensions of obtained expressions to the other recursive sequences.
Generating functions and triangulations for lecture hall cones
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics 30 (2016), no. 3, 1470-1479 • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the arithmetic-geometric structure of the lecture hall cone \[ L_n \ := \ \left\{λ\in \mathbb{R}^n: \, 0\leq \frac{λ_1}{1}\leq \frac{λ_2}{2}\leq \frac{λ_3}{3}\leq \cdots \leq \frac{λ_n}{n}\right\} . \] We show that $L_n$ is isomorphic to the cone over the lattice pyramid of a reflexive simplex whose Ehrhart $h^*$-polynomial is given by the $(n-1)$st Eulerian polynomial, and prove that lecture hall cones admit regular, flag, unimodular triangulations. After explicitly describing the Hilbert basis for $L_n$, we conclude with observations and a conjecture regarding the structure of unimodular triangulations of $L_n$, including connections between enumerative and algebraic properties of $L_n$ and cones over unit cubes.

Toric $g$-polynomials of hook shape lattice Path Matroid Polytopes and product of simplices
It is known that a lattice path matroid polytope can be associated with two given noncrossing lattice paths on $\mathbb{Z}\times\mathbb{Z}$ with the same end points. In this short note we give explicit formulae for the $f$-vector, toric $f$- and $g$-polynomials of a lattice path matroid polytope when two boundary paths enclose a hook shape.
Independent Sets, Matchings, and Occupancy Fractions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove tight upper bounds on the logarithmic derivative of the independence and matching polynomials of d-regular graphs. For independent sets, this theorem is a strengthening of the results of Kahn, Galvin and Tetali, and Zhao showing that a union of copies of $K_{d,d}$ maximizes the number of independent sets and the independence polynomial of a d-regular graph. For matchings, this shows that the matching polynomial and the total number of matchings of a d-regular graph are maximized by a union of copies of $K_{d,d}$. Using this we prove the asymptotic upper matching conjecture of Friedland, Krop, Lundow, and Markström. In probabilistic language, our main theorems state that for all d-regular graphs and all $λ$, the occupancy fraction of the hard-core model and the edge occupancy fraction of the monomer-dimer model with fugacity $λ$ are maximized by $K_{d,d}$. Our method involves constrained optimization problems over distributions of random variables and applies to all d-regular graphs directly, without a reduction to the bipartite case.

Linear rank-width of distance-hereditary graphs II. Vertex-minor obstructions
In the companion paper [Linear rank-width of distance-hereditary graphs I. A polynomial-time algorithm, Algorithmica 78(1):342--377, 2017], we presented a characterization of the linear rank-width of distance-hereditary graphs, from which we derived an algorithm to compute it in polynomial time. In this paper, we investigate structural properties of distance-hereditary graphs based on this characterization. First, we prove that for a fixed tree $T$, every distance-hereditary graph of sufficiently large linear rank-width contains a vertex-minor isomorphic to $T$. We extend this property to bigger graph classes, namely, classes of graphs whose prime induced subgraphs have bounded linear rank-width. Here, prime graphs are graphs containing no splits. We conjecture that for every tree $T$, every graph of sufficiently large linear rank-width contains a vertex-minor isomorphic to $T$. Our result implies that it is sufficient to prove this conjecture for prime graphs. For a class $Φ$ of graphs closed under taking vertex-minors, a graph $G$ is called a vertex-minor obstruction for $Φ$ if $G\notin Φ$ but all of its proper vertex-minors are contained in $Φ$. Secondly, we provide, for each $k\ge 2$, a set of distance-hereditary graphs that contains all distance-hereditary vertex-minor obstructions for graphs of linear rank-width at most $k$. Also, we give a simpler way to obtain the known vertex-minor obstructions for graphs of linear rank-width at most $1$.

The Smith Normal Form of a Specialized Jacobi-Trudi Matrix
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathrm{JT}_λ$ be the Jacobi-Trudi matrix corresponding to the partition $λ$, so $\det\mathrm{JT}_λ$ is the Schur function $s_λ$ in the variables $x_1,x_2,\dots$. Set $x_1=\cdots=x_n=1$ and all other $x_i=0$. Then the entries of $\mathrm{JT}_λ$ become polynomials in $n$ of the form ${n+j-1\choose j}$. We determine the Smith normal form over the ring $\mathbb{Q}[n]$ of this specialization of $\mathrm{JT}_λ$. The proof carries over to the specialization $x_i=q^{i-1}$ for $1\leq i\leq n$ and $x_i=0$ for $i>n$, where we set $q^n=y$ and work over the ring $\mathbb{Q}(q)[y]$.

The odd Hadwiger's conjecture is "almost'' decidable
The odd Hadwiger's conjecture, made by Gerads and Seymour in early 1990s, is an analogue of the famous Hadwiger's conjecture. It says that every graph with no odd $K_t$-minor is $(t-1)$-colorable. This conjecture is known to be true for $t \leq 5$, but the cases $t \geq 5$ are wide open. So far, the most general result says that every graph with no odd $K_t$-minor is $O(t \sqrt{\log t})$-colorable. In this paper, we tackle this conjecture from an algorithmic view, and show the following: For a given graph $G$ and any fixed $t$, there is a polynomial time algorithm to output one of the following: \begin{enumerate} \item a $(t-1)$-coloring of $G$, or \item an odd $K_{t}$-minor of $G$, or \item after making all "reductions" to $G$, the resulting graph $H$ (which is an odd minor of $G$ and which has no reductions) has a tree-decomposition $(T, Y)$ such that torso of each bag $Y_t$ is either \begin{itemize} \item of size at most $f_1(t) \log n$ for some function $f_1$ of $t$, or \item a graph that has a vertex $X$ of order at most $f_2(t)$ for some function $f_2$ of $t$ such that $Y_t-X$ is bipartite. Moreover, degree of $t$ in $T$ is at most $f_3(t)$ for some function $f_3$ of $t$. \end{itemize} \end{enumerate} Let us observe that the last odd minor $H$ is indeed a minimal counterexample to the odd Hadwiger's conjecture for the case $t$. So our result says that a minimal counterexample satisfies the lsat conclusion.
Max Point-Tolerance Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph $G$ is a \emph{max point-tolerance (MPT)} graph if each vertex $v$ of $G$ can be mapped to a \emph{pointed-interval} $(I_v, p_v)$ where $I_v$ is an interval of $\mathbb{R}$ and $p_v \in I_v$ such that $uv$ is an edge of $G$ iff $I_u \cap I_v \supseteq \{p_u, p_v\}$. MPT graphs model relationships among DNA fragments in genome-wide association studies as well as basic transmission problems in telecommunications. We formally introduce this graph class, characterize it, study combinatorial optimization problems on it, and relate it to several well known graph classes. We characterize MPT graphs as a special case of several 2D geometric intersection graphs; namely, triangle, rectangle, L-shape, and line segment intersection graphs. We further characterize MPT as having certain linear orders on their vertex set. Our last characterization is that MPT graphs are precisely obtained by intersecting special pairs of interval graphs. We also show that, on MPT graphs, the maximum weight independent set problem can be solved in polynomial time, the coloring problem is NP-complete, and the clique cover problem has a 2-approximation. Finally, we demonstrate several connections to known graph classes; e.g., MPT graphs strictly contain interval graphs and outerplanar graphs, but are incomparable to permutation, chordal, and planar graphs.

Distance mean-regular graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the concept of distance mean-regular graph, which can be seen as a generalization of both vertex-transitive and distance-regular graphs. Let $Γ$ be a graph with vertex set $V$, diameter $D$, adjacency matrix $A$, and adjacency algebra ${\cal A}$. Then, $Γ$ is $distance$ $mean$-$regular$ when, for a given $u\in V$, the averages of the intersection numbers $p_{ij}^h(u,v)=|Γ_i(u)\cap Γ_j(v)|$ (number of vertices at distance $i$ from $u$ and distance $j$ from $v$) computed over all vertices $v$ at a given distance $h\in \{0,1,\ldots,D\}$ from $u$, do not depend on $u$. In this work we study some properties and characterizations of these graphs. For instance, it is shown that a distance mean-regular graph is always distance degree-regular, and we give a condition for the converse to be also true. Some algebraic and spectral properties of distance mean-regular graphs are also investigated. We show that, for distance mean regular-graphs, the role of the distance matrices of distance-regular graphs is played for the so-called distance mean-regular matrices. These matrices are computed from a sequence of orthogonal polynomials evaluated at the adjacency matrix of $Γ$ and, hence, they generate a subalgebra of ${\cal A}$. Some other algebras associated to distance mean-regular graphs are also characterized.
