The Delta Conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
We conjecture two combinatorial interpretations for the symmetric function $Δ_{e_k} e_n$, where $Δ_f$ is an eigenoperator for the modified Macdonald polynomials defined by Bergeron, Garsia, Haiman, and Tesler. Both interpretations can be seen as generalizations of the Shuffle Conjecture of Haglund, Haiman, Remmel, Loehr, and Ulyanov, which was proved recently by Carlsson and Mellit. We show how previous work of the third author on Tesler matrices and ordered set partitions can be used to verify several cases of our conjectures. Furthermore, we use a reciprocity identity and LLT polynomials to prove another case. Finally, we show how our conjectures inspire 4-variable generalizations of the Catalan numbers, extending work of Garsia, Haiman, and the first author.

On a problem of Neumann
Published • View PublicationBIB
A conjecture widely attributed to Neumann is that all finite non-desarguesian projective planes contain a Fano subplane. In this note, we show that any finite projective plane of even order which admits an orthogonal polarity contains a Fano subplane. The number of planes of order less than $n$ previously known to contain a Fano subplane was $O(\log n)$, whereas the number of planes of order less than $n$ that our theorem applies to is not bounded above by any polynomial in $n$.

On the roots of hypergraph chromatic polynomials
Let $G = (V,E)$ be a finite, simple, connected graph with chromatic polynomial $P_G(q)$. Sokal \cite{sokal} proved that the roots of the chromatic polynomial of $G$ are bounded in absolute value by $KD$ where, $D$ is the maximum degree of the graph and $7< K < 8$ is a constant. In this paper we generalize this result to uniform hypergraphs. To prove our results we will use the theory of the bounded exponential type graph polynomials.
Overlapping latin subsquares and full products

We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for there to exist a latin square of order $n$ containing two subsquares of order $a$ and $b$ that intersect in a subsquare of order $c$. We also solve the case of two disjoint subsquares. We use these results to show that: (a) A latin square of order $n$ cannot have more than $\frac nm{n \choose h}/{m\choose h}$ subsquares of order $m$, where $h=\lceil(m+1)/2\rceil$. Indeed, the number of subsquares of order $m$ is bounded by a polynomial of degree at most $\sqrt{2m}+2$ in $n$. (b) For all $n\ge5$ there exists a loop of order $n$ in which every element can be obtained as a product of all $n$ elements in some order and with some bracketing.

On the asymptotic distribution of parameters in random weighted staircase tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study staircase tableaux, a combinatorial object introduced due to its connections with the asymmetric exclusion process (ASEP) and Askey-Wilson polynomials. Due to their interesting connections, staircase tableaux have been the object of study in many recent papers. More specific to this paper, the distribution of various parameters in random staircase tableaux has been studied. There have been interesting results on parameters along the main diagonal, however, no such results have appeared for other diagonals. It was conjectured that the distribution of the number of symbols along the kth diagonal is asymptotically Poisson as k and the size of the tableau tend to infinity. We partially prove this conjecture; more specifically we prove it for the second and the third main diagonal.

New bounds on curve tangencies and orthogonalities
Published in Discrete Analysis. 22: 1--22, 2016 • View PublicationBIB
We establish new bounds on the number of tangencies and orthogonal intersections determined by an arrangement of curves. First, given a set of $n$ algebraic plane curves, we show that there are $O(n^{3/2})$ points where two or more curves are tangent. In particular, if no three curves are mutually tangent at a common point, then there are $O(n^{3/2})$ curve-curve tangencies. Second, given a family of algebraic plane curves and a set of $n$ curves from this family, we show that either there are $O(n^{3/2})$ points where two or more curves are orthogonal, or the family of curves has certain special properties. We obtain these bounds by transforming the arrangement of plane curves into an arrangement of space curves so that tangency (or orthogonality) of the original plane curves corresponds to intersection of space curves. We then bound the number of intersections of the corresponding space curves. For the case of curve-curve tangency, we use a polynomial method technique that is reminiscent of Guth and Katz's proof of the joints theorem. For the case of orthogonal curve intersections, we employ a bound of Guth and the third author to control the number of two-rich points in space curve arrangements.

On the Stanley depth of powers of edge ideals
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathbb{K}$ be a field and $S=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over $\mathbb{K}$. Let $G$ be a graph with $n$ vertices. Assume that $I=I(G)$ is the edge ideal of $G$ and $p$ is the number of its bipartite connected components. We prove that for every positive integer $k$, the inequalities ${\rm sdepth}(I^k/I^{k+1})\geq p$ and ${\rm sdepth}(S/I^k)\geq p$ hold. As a consequence, we conclude that $S/I^k$ satisfies the Stanley's inequality for every integer $k\geq n-1$. Also, it follows that $I^k/I^{k+1}$ satisfies the Stanley's inequality for every integer $k\gg 0$. Furthermore, we prove that if (i) $G$ is a non-bipartite graph, or (ii) at least one of the connected components of $G$ is a tree with at least one edge, then $I^k$ satisfies the Stanley's inequality for every integer $k\geq n-1$. Moreover, we verify a conjecture of the author in special cases.

Nonsymmetric Askey-Wilson polynomials and $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graphs
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 147 (2017), 75-118 • View PublicationBIB
In his famous theorem (1982), Douglas Leonard characterized the $q$-Racah polynomials and their relatives in the Askey scheme from the duality property of $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graphs. In this paper we consider a nonsymmetric (or Laurent) version of the $q$-Racah polynomials in the above situation. Let $Γ$ denote a $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graph that contains a Delsarte clique $C$. Assume that $Γ$ has $q$-Racah type. Fix a vertex $x \in C$. We partition the vertex set of $Γ$ according to the path-length distance to both $x$ and $C$. The linear span of the characteristic vectors corresponding to the cells in this partition has an irreducible module structure for the universal double affine Hecke algebra $\hat{H}_q$ of type $(C^{\vee}_1, C_1)$. From this module, we naturally obtain a finite sequence of orthogonal Laurent polynomials. We prove the orthogonality relations for these polynomials, using the $\hat{H}_q$-module and the theory of Leonard systems. Changing $\hat{H}_q$ by $\hat{H}_{q^{-1}}$ we show how our Laurent polynomials are related to the nonsymmetric Askey-Wilson polynomials, and therefore how our Laurent polynomials can be viewed as nonsymmetric $q$-Racah polynomials.

Refined dual stable Grothendieck polynomials and generalized Bender-Knuth involutions
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 23 (3), 2016 • View PublicationBIB
The dual stable Grothendieck polynomials are a deformation of the Schur functions, originating in the study of the K-theory of the Grassmannian. We generalize these polynomials by introducing a countable family of additional parameters, and we prove that this generalization still defines symmetric functions. For this fact, we give two self-contained proofs, one of which constructs a family of involutions on the set of reverse plane partitions generalizing the Bender-Knuth involutions on semistandard tableaux, whereas the other classifies the structure of reverse plane partitions with entries 1 and 2.

New Eulerian numbers of type D
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 23, Issue 1 (2016), Paper P1.38 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a new array of type $D$ Eulerian numbers, different from that studied by Brenti, Chow and Hyatt. We find in particular the recurrence relation, Worpitzky formula and the generating function. We also find the probability distributions whose moments are Eulerian polynomials of type $A$, $B$ and $D$.

Ehrhart quasi-period collapse in rational polygons
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 1976, P. R. Scott characterized the Ehrhart polynomials of convex integral polygons. We study the same question for Ehrhart polynomials and quasi-polynomials of *non*-integral convex polygons. Turning to the case in which the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial has nontrivial quasi-period, we determine the possible minimal periods of the coefficient functions of the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial of a rational polygon.

Volume polynomials and duality algebras of multi-fans
Published in Arnold Mathematical Journal. 2016. Vol. 2. No. 3. P. 329-381 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a theory of volume polynomials and corresponding duality algebras of multi-fans. Any complete simplicial multi-fan $Δ$ determines a volume polynomial $V_Δ$ whose values are the volumes of multi-polytopes based on $Δ$. This homogeneous polynomial is further used to construct a Poincare duality algebra $\mathcal{A}^*(Δ)$. We study the structure and properties of $V_Δ$ and $\mathcal{A}^*(Δ)$ and give applications and connections to other subjects, such as Macaulay duality, Novik--Swartz theory of face rings of simplicial manifolds, generalizations of Minkowski's theorem on convex polytopes, cohomology of torus manifolds, computations of volumes, and linear relations on the powers of linear forms. In particular, we prove that the analogue of the $g$-theorem does not hold for multi-polytopes.

Multibasic Ehrhart theory
In the present paper, we introduce a multibasic extension of the Ehrhart theory. We give a multibasic extension of Ehrhart polynomials and Ehrhart series. We also show that an analogue of Ehrhart reciprocity holds for multibasic Ehrhart polynomials.

Wonderful Symmetric Varieties and Schubert Polynomials

Extending results of Wyser, we determine formulas for the equivariant cohomology classes of closed orbits of certain families of spherical subgroups of $GL_n$ on the flag variety $GL_n/B$. Putting this together with a slight extension of the results of Can-Joyce-Wyser, we arrive at a family of polynomial identities which show that certain explicit sums of Schubert polynomials factor as products of linear forms.

Containment Problems for Projections of Polyhedra and Spectrahedra
Spectrahedra are affine sections of the cone of positive semidefinite matrices which form a rich class of convex bodies that properly contains that of polyhedra. While the class of polyhedra is closed under linear projections, the class of spectrahedra is not. In this paper we investigate the problem of deciding containment of projections of polyhedra and spectrahedra based on previous works on containment of spectrahedra. The main concern is to study these containment problems by formulating them as polynomial nonnegativity problems. This allows to state hierarchies of (sufficient) semidefinite conditions by applying (and proving) sophisticated Positivstellensätze. We also extend results on a solitary sufficient condition for containment of spectrahedra coming from the polyhedral situation as well as connections to the theory of (completely) positive linear maps.
Mixed Ehrhart polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
For lattice polytopes $P_1,\ldots, P_k \subseteq \mathbb{R}^d$, Bihan (2014) introduced the discrete mixed volume $\mathrm{DMV}(P_1,\dots,P_k)$ in analogy to the classical mixed volume. In this note we initiate the study of the associated mixed Ehrhart polynomial $\mathrm{ME}_{P_1,\dots,P_k}(n) = \mathrm{DMV}(nP_1,\dots,nP_k)$. We study properties of this polynomial and we give interpretations for some of its coefficients in terms of (discrete) mixed volumes. Bihan (2014) showed that the discrete mixed volume is always non-negative. Our investigations yield simpler proofs for certain special cases. We also introduce and study the associated mixed $h^*$-vector. We show that for large enough dilates $r P_1, \ldots, rP_k$ the corresponding mixed $h^*$-polynomial has only real roots and as a consequence the mixed $h^*$-vector becomes non-negative.

Filtrations on Springer fiber cohomology and Kostka polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove a conjecture which expresses the bigraded Poisson-de Rham homology of the nilpotent cone of a semisimple Lie algebra in terms of the generalized (one-variable) Kostka polynomials, via a formula suggested by Lusztig. This allows us to construct a canonical family of filtrations on the flag variety cohomology, and hence on irreducible representations of the Weyl group, whose Hilbert series are given by the generalized Kostka polynomials. We deduce consequences for the cohomology of all Springer fibers. In particular, this computes the grading on the zeroth Poisson homology of all classical finite W-algebras, as well as the filtration on the zeroth Hochschild homology of all quantum finite W-algebras, and we generalize to all homology degrees. As a consequence, we deduce a conjecture of Proudfoot on symplectic duality, relating in type A the Poisson homology of Slodowy slices to the intersection cohomology of nilpotent orbit closures. In the last section, we give an analogue of our main theorem in the setting of mirabolic D-modules.

The Prism tableau model for Schubert polynomials
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 154 (2018), 551-582 • View PublicationBIB
The Schubert polynomials lift the Schur basis of symmetric polynomials into a basis for Z[x1,x2,...]. We suggest the "prism tableau model" for these polynomials. A novel aspect of this alternative to earlier results is that it directly invokes semistandard tableaux; it does so as part of a colored tableau amalgam. In the Grassmannian case, a prism tableau with colors ignored is a semistandard Young tableau. Our arguments are developed from the Groebner geometry of matrix Schubert varieties.
New examples of period collapse
"Period collapse" refers to any situation where the period of the Ehrhart function of a polytope is less than the denominator of that polytope. We study several interesting situations where this occurs, primarily involving triangles. For example: 1) we determine exactly when the Ehrhart function of a right triangle with legs on the axes and slant edge with irrational slope is a polynomial; 2) we find triangles with periods given by any even-index k-Fibonacci number, and larger denominators; 3) we construct several higher dimensional examples. Several related issues are also discussed, including connections with symplectic geometry.
