For the quantum integer [n]_q = 1+q+q^2+... + q^{n-1} there is a natural polynomial multiplication such that [mn]_q = [m]_q \otimes_q [n]_q. This multiplication is given by the functional equation f_{mn}(q) = f_m(q) f_n(q^m), defined on a sequence {f_n(q)} of polynomials such that f_n(0)=1 for all n. It is proved that if {f_n(q)} is a solution of this functional equation, then the sequence {f_n(q)} converges to a formal power series F(q).
Quantum mulitplication also leads to the functional equation f(q)F(q^m) = F(q), where f(q) is a fixed polynomial or formal power series with constant term f(0)=1, and F(q)=1+\sum_{k=1}^{\infty}b_kq^k is a formal power series. It is proved that this functional equation has a unique solution F(q) for every polynomial or formal power series f(q). If the degree of f(q)is at most m-1, then there is an explicit formula for the coefficients b_k of F(q) in terms of the coefficients of f(q) and the m-adic representation of k.
The paper also contains a review of convergence properties of formal power series with coefficients in an arbitrary field or integeral domain.
Free probability and representations of large symmetric groups
We study the asymptotic behavior of the free cumulants (in the sense of free probability theory of Voiculescu) of Jucys--Murphy elements--or equivalently--of the transition measure associated with a Young diagram. We express these cumulants in terms of normalized characters of the appropriate representation of the symmetric group S_q. Our analysis considers the case when the Young diagrams rescaled by q^{-1/2} converge towards some prescribed shape. We find explicitly the second order asymptotic expansion and outline the algorithm which allows to find the asymptotic expansion of any order. As a corollary we obtain the second order asymptotic expansion of characters evaluated on cycles in terms of free cumulants, i.e. we find explicitly terms in Kerov polynomials with the appropriate degree.
The Tropical Grassmannian
In tropical algebraic geometry, the solution sets of polynomial equations are piecewise-linear. We introduce the tropical variety of a polynomial ideal, and we identify it with a polyhedral subcomplex of the Grobner fan. The tropical Grassmannian arises in this manner from the ideal of quadratic Plucker relations. It is shown to parametrize all tropical linear spaces. Lines in tropical projective space are trees, and their tropical Grassmannian G_{2,n} equals the space of phylogenetic trees studied by Billera, Holmes and Vogtmann. Higher Grassmannians offer a natural generalization of the space of trees. Their facets correspond to binomial initial ideals of the Plucker ideal. The tropical Grassmannian G_{3,6} is a simplicial complex glued from 1035 tetrahedra.

As an instance of the B-polynomial, the circuit, or cycle, polynomial P(G(Gamma); w) of the generalized rooted product G(Gamma) of graphs was studied by Farrell and Rosenfeld ({\em Jour. Math. Sci. (India)}, 2000, \textbf{11}(1), 35--47) and Rosenfeld and Diudea ({\em Internet Electron. J. Mol. Des.}, 2002, \textbf{1}(3), 142--156). In both cases, the rooted product G(Gamma) was considered without any restrictions on graphs G and Gamma. Herein, we present a new general result and its corollaries concerning the case when the core graph G is restricted to be bipartite. The last instance of G(Gamma), as well as all its predecessors, can find chemical applications.

We consider a class of multivariate recurrences frequently arising in the worst case analysis of Davis-Putnam-style exponential time backtracking algorithms for NP-hard problems. We describe a technique for proving asymptotic upper bounds on these recurrences, by using a suitable weight function to reduce the problem to that of solving univariate linear recurrences; show how to use quasiconvex programming to determine the weight function yielding the smallest upper bound; and prove that the resulting upper bounds are within a polynomial factor of the true asymptotics of the recurrence. We develop and implement a multiple-gradient descent algorithm for the resulting quasiconvex programs, using a real-number arithmetic package for guaranteed accuracy of the computed worst case time bounds.

Some posets of binary leaf-labeled trees are shown to be supersolvable lattices and explicit EL-labelings are given. Their characteristic polynomials are computed, recovering their known factorization in a different way.
Polynomial versus Exponential Growth in Repetition-Free Binary Words
It is known that the number of overlap-free binary words of length n grows polynomially, while the number of cubefree binary words grows exponentially. We show that the dividing line between polynomial and exponential growth is 7/3. More precisely, there are only polynomially many binary words of length n that avoid 7/3-powers, but there are exponentially many binary words of length n that avoid (7/3+)-powers. This answers an open question of Kobayashi from 1986.
Knot theory for self-indexed graphs
We introduce and study so-called self-indexed graphs. These are (oriented) finite graphs endowed with a map from the set of edges to the set of vertices. Such graphs naturally arise from classical knot and link diagrams. In fact, the graphs resulting from link diagrams have an additional structure, an integral flow. We call a self-indexed graph with integral flow a comte. The analogy with links allows us to define transformations of comtes generalizing the Reidemeister moves on link diagrams. We show that many invariants of links can be generalized to comtes, most notably the linking number, the Alexander polynomials, the link group, etc. We also discuss finite type invariants and quandle cocycle invariants of comtes.

It is known that the combinatorial classes in the cohomology of the mapping class group of punctures surfaces defined by Witten and Kontsevich are polynomials in the adjusted Miller-Morita-Mumford classes. The leading coefficient was computed in [Kiyoshi Igusa: Algebr. Geom. Topol. 4 (2004) 473-520]. The next coefficient was computed in [Kiyoshi Igusa: math.AT/0303157, to appear in Topology]. The present paper gives a recursive formula for all of the coefficients. The main combinatorial tool is a generating function for a new statistic on the set of increasing trees on 2n+1 vertices. As we already explained in the last paper cited this verifies all of the formulas conjectured by Arbarello and Cornalba [J. Alg. Geom. 5 (1996) 705--749]. Mondello [math.AT/0303207, to appear in IMRN] has obtained similar results using different methods.

We consider semisimple triangular operators acting in the symmetric component of the group algebra over the weight lattice of a root system. We present a determinantal formula for the eigenbasis of such triangular operators. This determinantal formula gives rise to an explicit construction of the Macdonald polynomials and of the Heckman-Opdam generalized Jacobi polynomials.

Classical Schur P-functions are the particular case of Hall-Littlewood polynomials when the parameter is equal to -1. We introduce factorial (interpolation) analogues of Schur P-functions. A dimension of a skew shifted Young diagram is the number of standard tableaux of the given shape. Also these numbers are equal up to simple factors to the decomposition coefficients of the restriction of an irreducible representation of a spin-symmetric group to a smaller spin-symmetric group. In terms of the factorial Schur P-functions we obtain an explicit formula for the dimension of a skew shifted Young diagram. The main application of this formula is the new derivation of Nazarov's classification of undecomposable projective characters of the infinite symmetric group.

We refine a technique used in a paper by Schur on real-rooted polynomials. This amounts to an extension of a theorem of Wagner on Hadamard products of Toeplitz matrices. We also apply our results to polynomials for which the Neggers-Stanley Conjecture is known to hold. More precisely, we settle interlacing properties for $E$-polynomials of series-parallel posets and column-strict labelled Ferrers posets.

The paper is related to the following question of P.~L.~Ul'yanov: is it true that for any $2π$-periodic continuous function $f$ there is a uniformly convergent rearrangement of its trigonometric Fourier series? In particular, we give an affirmative answer if the absolute values of Fourier coefficients of $f$ decrease. Also, we study a problem how to choose $m$ terms of a trigonometric polynomial of degree $n$ to make the uniform norm of their sum as small as possible.

We prove a recent conjecture of Lassalle about positivity and integrality of coefficients in some polynomial expansions. We also give a combinatorial interpretation of those numbers. Finally, we show that this question is closely related to the fundamental problem of calculating the linearization coefficients for binomial coefficients.

Several new transformations for q-binomial coefficients are found, which have the special feature that the kernel is a polynomial with nonnegative coefficients. By studying the group-like properties of these positivity preserving transformations, as well as their connection with the Bailey lemma, many new summation and transformation formulas for basic hypergeometric series are found. The new q-binomial transformations are also applied to obtain multisum Rogers--Ramanujan identities, to find new representations for the Rogers--Szego polynomials, and to make some progress on Bressoud's generalized Borwein conjecture. For the original Borwein conjecture we formulate a refinement based on a new triple sum representations of the Borwein polynomials.
Results on zeta functions for codes
We give a new and short proof of the Mallows-Sloane upper bound for self-dual codes. We formulate a version of Greene's theorem for normalized weight enumerators. We relate normalized rank-generating polynomials to two-variable zeta functions. And we show that a self-dual code has the Clifford property, but that the same property does not hold in general for formally self-dual codes.

We study generating functions for the number of even (odd) permutations on n letters avoiding 132 and an arbitrary permutation $τ$ on k letters, or containing $τ$ exactly once. In several interesting cases the generating function depends only on k and is expressed via Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind.
Computing the Integer Programming Gap
We determine the maximal gap between the optimal values of an integer program and its linear programming relaxation, where the matrix and cost function are fixed but the right hand side is unspecified. Our formula involves irreducible decomposition of monomial ideals. The gap can be computed in polynomial time when the dimension is fixed.
Complexity and Completeness of Immanants
Immanants are polynomial functions of n by n matrices attached to irreducible characters of the symmetric group S_n, or equivalently to Young diagrams of size n. Immanants include determinants and permanents as extreme cases. Valiant proved that computation of permanents is a complete problem in his algebraic model of NP theory, i.e., it is VNP-complete. We prove that computation of immanants is VNP-complete if the immanants are attached to a family of diagrams whose separation is $Ω(n^δ)$ for some $δ>0$. We define the separation of a diagram to be the largest number of overhanging boxes contained in a single row. Our theorem proves a conjecture of Buergisser for a large variety of families, and in particular we recover with new proofs his VNP-completeness results for hooks and rectangles.

A purely combinatorial construction of the quantum cohomology ring of the flag manifold $G/B$ is presented. We show that the ring we construct is commutative, associative and satisfies the usual grading condition. By using results of two of our previous papers, we obtain a presentation of this ring in terms of generators and relations, as well as formulas for quantum Giambelli polynomials. We show that these polynomials satisfy a certain orthogonality property, which - for G=SL_n(C) - was proved previously by Fomin, Gelfand and Postnikov.
