Symmetric polynomials vanishing on the diagonals shifted by roots of unity
For a pair of positive integers (k,r) with r>1 such that k+1 and r-1 are relatively prime, we describe the space of symmetric polynomials in variables x_1,...,x_n which vanish at all diagonals of codimension k of the form x_i=tq^{s_i}x_{i-1}, i=2,...,k+1, where t and q are primitive roots of unity of orders k+1 and r-1.

Representations of Yangians associated with skew Young diagrams
Published in Proceedings of the ICM, Beijing 2002, vol. 2, 643--654 • Search Publication
The Yangian of the Lie algebra $gl_N$ has a distinguished family of irreducible finite-dimensional representations, called elementary representations. They are parametrized by pairs, consisting of a skew Young diagram and a complex number. Each of these representations has an explicit realization, it extends the classical realization of the irreducible polynomial representations of $gl_N$ by means of the Young symmetrizers. We explicitly construct analogues of these elementary representations for the twisted Yangian, which corresponds to the Lie algebra $so_N$. Our construction provides solutions to several open problems in the classical representation theory. In particular, we obtain analogues of the Young symmetrizers for the Brauer centralizer algebra.

Jack polynomials in superspace
Published in Commun.Math.Phys. 242 (2003) 331-360 • View PublicationBIB
This work initiates the study of {\it orthogonal} symmetric polynomials in superspace. Here we present two approaches leading to a family of orthogonal polynomials in superspace that generalize the Jack polynomials. The first approach relies on previous work by the authors in which eigenfunctions of the supersymmetric extension of the trigonometric Calogero-Moser-Sutherland Hamiltonian were constructed. Orthogonal eigenfunctions are now obtained by diagonalizing the first nontrivial element of a bosonic tower of commuting conserved charges not containing this Hamiltonian. Quite remarkably, the expansion coefficients of these orthogonal eigenfunctions in the supermonomial basis are stable with respect to the number of variables. The second and more direct approach amounts to symmetrize products of non-symmetric Jack polynomials with monomials in the fermionic variables. This time, the orthogonality is inherited from the orthogonality of the non-symmetric Jack polynomials, and the value of the norm is given explicitly.
A Two-Variable Interlace Polynomial
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a new graph polynomial in two variables. This ``interlace'' polynomial can be computed in two very different ways. The first is an expansion analogous to the state space expansion of the Tutte polynomial; the significant differences are that our expansion is over vertex rather than edge subsets, and the rank and nullity employed are those of an adjacency matrix rather than an incidence matrix. The second computation is by a three-term reduction formula involving a graph pivot; the pivot arose previously in the study of interlacement and Euler circuits in four-regular graphs. We consider a few properties and specializations of the two-variable interlace polynomial. One specialization, the ``vertex-nullity interlace polynomial'', is the single-variable interlace graph polynomial we studied previously, closely related to the Tutte-Martin polynomial on isotropic systems previously considered by Bouchet. Another, the ``vertex-rank interlace polynomial'', is equally interesting. Yet another specialization of the two-variable polynomial is the independent-set polynomial.

Symmetric polynomials vanishing on the shifted diagonals and Macdonald polynomials
For each pair (k,r) of positive integers with r>1, we consider an ideal I^(k,r)_n of the ring of symmetric polynomials in n variables. The ideal I_n^(k,r) has a basis consisting of Macdonald polynomials P(x_1,...,x_n;q,t) at t^{k+1}q^{r-1}=1, and is a deformed version of the one studied earlier in the context of Jack polynomials. In this paper we give a characterization of I^(k,r)_n in terms of explicit zero conditions on the k-codimensional shifted diagonals of the form x_{2}=tq^{s_1}x_1,...,x_{k+1}=tq^{s_k}x_k. The ideal I^(k,r)_n may be viewed as a deformation of the space of correlation functions of an abelian current of the affine Lie algebra \hat{sl_r}. We give a brief discussion about this connection.

Graph equivalence and characterization via a continuous evolution of a physical analog
A general novel approach mapping discrete, combinatorial, graph-theoretic problems onto ``physical'' models - namely $n$ simplexes in $n-1$ dimensions - is applied to the graph equivalence problem. It is shown to solve this long standing problem in polynomial, short, time.
The Interlace Polynomial of a Graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by circle graphs, and the enumeration of Euler circuits, we define a one-variable ``interlace polynomial'' for any graph. The polynomial satisfies a beautiful and unexpected reduction relation, quite different from the cut and fuse reduction characterizing the Tutte polynomial. It emerges that the interlace graph polynomial may be viewed as a special case of the Martin polynomial of an isotropic system, which underlies its connections with the circuit partition polynomial and the Kauffman brackets of a link diagram. The graph polynomial, in addition to being perhaps more broadly accessible than the Martin polynomial for isotropic systems, also has a two-variable generalization that is unknown for the Martin polynomial. We consider extremal properties of the interlace polynomial, its values for various special graphs, and evaluations which relate to basic graph properties such as the component and independence numbers.

Counting Meromorphic Functions with Critical Points of Large Multiplicities
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the number of meromorphic functions on a Riemann surface with given critical values and prescribed multiplicities of critical points and values. When the Riemann surface is $\CP^1$ and the function is a polynomial, we give an elementary way of finding this number. In the general case, we show that, as the multiplicities of critical points tend to infinity, the asymptotic for the number of meromorphic functions is given by the volume of some space of graphs glued from circles. We express this volume as a matrix integral.

Spaces of coinvariants and fusion product II. Affine sl_2 character formulas in terms of Kostka polynomials
Published in J. Algebra 279 (2004), no. 1, 147--179. • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we continue our study of the Hilbert polynomials of coinvariants begun in our previous work math.QA/0205324 (paper I). We describe the sl_n-fusion products for symmetric tensor representations following the method of Feigin and Feigin, and show that their Hilbert polynomials are A_{n-1}-supernomials. We identify the fusion product of arbitrary irreducible sl_n-modules with the fusion product of their resctriction to sl_{n-1}. Then using the equivalence theorem from paper I and the results above for sl_3, we give a fermionic formula for the Hilbert polynomials of a class of affine sl_2-coinvariants in terms of the level-restricted Kostka polynomials. The coinvariants under consideration are a generalization of the coinvariants studied in [FKLMM]. Our formula differs from the fermionic formula established in [FKLMM] and implies the alternating sum formula conjectured in [FL] for this case.

On the quotient ring by diagonal harmonics
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a Weyl group W and its reflection representation mathfrak{h}, we find the character and Hilbert series for a quotient ring of C[mathfrak{h} oplus mathfrak{h}^*] by an ideal containing the W--invariant polynomials without constant term. This confirms conjectures of Haiman. The proof makes use of rational Cherednik algebras, as studied by Etingof and Ginzburg, and others.

Permutations Which Avoid 1243 and 2143, Continued Fractions, and Chebyshev Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Several authors have examined connections between permutations which avoid 132, continued fractions, and Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind. In this paper we prove analogues of some of these results for permutations which avoid 1243 and 2143. Using tools developed to prove these analogues, we give enumerations and generating functions for permutations which avoid 1243, 2143, and certain additional patterns. We also give generating functions for permutations which avoid 1243 and 2143 and contain certain additional patterns exactly once. In all cases we express these generating functions in terms of Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind.

321-polygon-avoiding permutations and Chebyshev polynomials

A 321-k-gon-avoiding permutation pi avoids 321 and the following four patterns: k(k+2)(k+3)...(2k-1)1(2k)23...(k+1), k(k+2)(k+3)...(2k-1)(2k)123...(k+1), (k+1)(k+2)(k+3)...(2k-1)1(2k)23...k, (k+1)(k+2)(k+3)...(2k-1)(2k)123...k. The 321-4-gon-avoiding permutations were introduced and studied by Billey and Warrington [BW] as a class of elements of the symmetric group whose Kazhdan-Lusztig, Poincare polynomials, and the singular loci of whose Schubert varieties have fairly simple formulas and descriptions. Stankova and West [SW] gave an exact enumeration in terms of linear recurrences with constant coefficients for the cases k=2,3,4. In this paper, we extend these results by finding an explicit expression for the generating function for the number of 321-k-gon-avoiding permutations on n letters. The generating function is expressed via Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind.

The Hilbert Zonotope and a Polynomial Time Algorithm for Universal Grobner Bases
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics, 30:529--544, 2003 • View PublicationBIB
We provide a polynomial time algorithm for computing the universal Gröbner basis of any polynomial ideal having a finite set of common zeros in fixed number of variables. One ingredient of our algorithm is an effective construction of the state polyhedron of any member of the Hilbert scheme Hilb^d_n of n-long d-variate ideals, enabled by introducing the Hilbert zonotope H^d_n and showing that it simultaneously refines all state polyhedra of ideals on Hilb^d_n.

We consider a problem of optimizing convex functionals over matroid bases. It is richly expressive and captures certain quadratic assignment and clustering problems. While generally NP-hard, we show it is polynomial time solvable when a suitable parameter is restricted.

The Bailey lemma and Kostka polynomials
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. 20 (2004), 131-171 • View PublicationBIB
Using the theory of Kostka polynomials, we prove an A_{n-1} version of Bailey's lemma at integral level. Exploiting a new, conjectural expansion for Kostka numbers, this is then generalized to fractional levels, leading to a new expression for admissible characters of A_{n-1}^{(1)} and to identities for A-type branching functions.

Two formulae for inverse Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials in S_n

Let w_0 denote the permutation [n,n-1,...,2,1]. We give two new explicit formulae for the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials P_{w_0w,w_0x} in S_n when x is a maximal element in the singular locus of the Schubert variety X_w. To do this, we utilize a standard identity that relates P_{x,w} and P_{w_0w,w_0x}.

Some statistics on restricted 132 involutions
Published • View PublicationBIB
In [GM] Guibert and Mansour studied involutions on n letters avoiding (or containing exactly once) 132 and avoiding (or containing exactly once) an arbitrary pattern on k letters. They also established a bijection between 132-avoiding involutions and Dyck word prefixes of same length. Extending this bijection to bilateral words allows to determine more parameters; in particular, we consider the number of inversions and rises of the involutions onto the words. This is the starting point for considering two different directions: even/odd involutions and statistics of some generalized patterns. Thus we first study generating functions for the number of even or odd involutions on n letters avoiding (or containing exactly once) 132 and avoiding (or containing exactly once) an arbitrary pattern $τ$ on k letters. In several interesting cases the generating function depends only on k and is expressed via Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind. Next, we consider other statistics on 132-avoiding involutions by counting an occurrences of some generalized patterns, related to the enumeration according to the number of rises.

Quantum Bruhat graph and Schubert polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
The quantum Bruhat graph, which is an extension of the graph formed by covering relations in the Bruhat order, is naturally related to the quantum cohomology ring of G/B. We enhance a result of Fulton and Woodward by showing that the minimal monomial in the quantum parameters that occurs in the quantum product of two Schubert classes has a simple interpretation in terms of directed paths in this graph. We define path Schubert polynomials, which are quantum cohomology analogues of skew Schubert polynomials recently introduced by Lenart and Sottile. They are given by sums over paths in the quantum Bruhat graph of type A. The 3-point Gromov-Witten invariants for the flag manifold are expressed in terms of these polynomials. This construction gives a combinatorial description for the set of all monomials in the quantum parameters that occur in the quantum product of two Schubert classes.

Symmetric iterated Betti numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define a set of invariants of a homogeneous ideal $I$ in a polynomial ring called the symmetric iterated Betti numbers of $I$. For $I_Γ$, the Stanley-Reisner ideal of a simplicial complex $Γ$, these numbers are the symmetric counterparts of the exterior iterated Betti numbers of $Γ$ introduced by Duval and Rose. We show that the symmetric iterated Betti numbers of an ideal $I$ coincide with those of a particular reverse lexicographic generic initial ideal $\Gin(I)$ of $I$, and interpret these invariants in terms of the associated primes and standard pairs of $\Gin(I)$. We verify that for an ideal $I=I_Γ$ the extremal Betti numbers of $I_Γ$ are precisely the extremal (symmetric or exterior) iterated Betti numbers of $Γ$. We close with some results and conjectures about the relationship between symmetric and exterior iterated Betti numbers of a simplicial complex.
