Binomial Residues
Published • View PublicationBIB
A binomial residue is a rational function defined by a hypergeometric integral whose kernel is singular along binomial divisors. Binomial residues provide an integral representation for rational solutions of A-hypergeometric systems of Lawrence type. The space of binomial residues of a given degree, modulo those which are polynomial in some variable, has dimension equal to the Euler characteristic of the matroid associated with A.

Rectangular Scott-type Permanents
Published in Séminaire Lotharingien Combin. 43 (2000), paper B43g, 25 pp • Search Publication
Let $x_1,x_2,...,x_n$ be the zeroes of a polynomial P(x) of degree n and $y_1,y_2,...,y_m$ be the zeroes of another polynomial Q(y) of degree m. Our object of study is the permanent $\per(1/(x_i-y_j))_{1\le i\le n, 1\le j\le m}$, here named "Scott-type" permanent, the case of $P(x)=x^n-1$ and $Q(y)=y^n+1$ having been considered by R. F. Scott. We present an efficient approach to determining explicit evaluations of Scott-type permanents, based on generalizations of classical theorems by Cauchy and Borchardt, and of a recent theorem by Lascoux. This continues and extends the work initiated by the first author ("Généralisation de l'identité de Scott sur les permanents," to appear in Linear Algebra Appl.). Our approach enables us to provide numerous closed form evaluations of Scott-type permanents for special choices of the polynomials P(x) and Q(y), including generalizations of all the results from the above mentioned paper and of Scott's permanent itself. For example, we prove that if $P(x)=x^n-1$ and $Q(y)=y^{2n}+y^n+1$ then the corresponding Scott-type permanent is equal to $(-1)^{n+1}n!$.

The Flag Major Index and Group Actions on Polynomial Rings
Published • View PublicationBIB
A new extension of the major index, defined in terms of Coxeter elements, is introduced. For the classical Weyl groups of type $B$, it is equidistributed with length. For more general wreath products it appears in an explicit formula for the Hilbert series of the (diagonal action) invariant algebra.
Combinatorial Intersection Cohomology for Fans
Published • View PublicationBIB
We continue the approach toward a purely combinatorial "virtual" intersection cohomology for possibly non-rational fans, based on our investigation of equivariant intersection cohomology for toric varieties (see math.AG/9904159). Fundamental objects of study are "minimal extension sheaves" on "fan spaces". These are flabby sheaves of graded modules over a sheaf of polynomial rings, satisfying three relatively simple axioms that characterize the properties of the equivariant intersection cohomology sheaf on a toric variety, endowed with the finite topology given by open invariant subsets. These sheaves are models for the "pure" objects of a "perverse category"; a "Decomposition Theorem" is shown to hold. -- Formalizing those fans that define "equivariantly formal" toric varieties (where equivariant and non-equivariant intersection cohomology determine each other by Kunneth type formulae), we study "quasi-convex" fans (including fans with convex or with "co-convex" support). For these, there is a meaningful "virtual intersection cohomology". We characterize quasi-convex fans by a topological condition on the support of their boundary fan and prove a generalization of Stanley's "Local-Global" formula realizing the intersection Poincare polynomial of a complete toric variety in terms of local data. Virtual intersection cohomology of quasi-convex fans is shown to satify Poincare duality. To describe the local data in terms of virtual intersection cohomology of lower-dimensional complete polytopal fans, one needs a "Hard Lefschetz" type theorem. It requires a vanishing condition that is known to hold for rational cones, but yet remains to be proven in the general case.

On the combinatorics of Forrester-Baxter models
Published in Physical combinatorics (Kyoto, 1999), 49--103, Progr. Math,. 191, Birkhauser, Boston, MA, 2000. • View PublicationBIB
We provide further boson-fermion q-polynomial identities for the `finitised' Virasoro characters χ^{p, p'}_{r,s} of the Forrester-Baxter minimal models M(p, p'), for certain values of r and s. The construction is based on a detailed analysis of the combinatorics of the set P^{p, p'}_{a, b, c}(L) of q-weighted, length-L Forrester-Baxter paths, whose generating function χ^{p, p'}_{a, b, c}(L) provides a finitisation of χ^{p, p'}_{r,s}. In this paper, we restrict our attention to the case where the startpoint a and endpoint b of each path both belong to the set of Takahashi lengths. In the limit L -> infinity, these polynomial identities reduce to q-series identities for the corresponding characters.

The Imbedding Sum of a Graph
The automorphisms of a graph act naturally on its set of labeled imbeddings to produce its unlabeled imbeddings. The imbedding sum of a graph is a polynomial that contains useful information about a graph's labeled and unlabeled imbeddings. In particular, the polynomial enumerates the number of different ways the unlabeled imbeddings can be vertex colored and enumerates the labeled and unlabeled imbeddings by their symmetries.

Application of Tree-like Structure of Graph to Matrix Analysis
Formulas for matrix determinants, algebraic adjunctions, characteristic polynomial coefficients, components of eigenvectors are obtained in the form of signless sums of matrix elements products taking by special graphs. Signless formulas are very important for singular and stochastic problems. They are also useful for spectral analysis of large very sparse matrices.

Some cyclic covers of complements of arrangements
Published in Topology Appl. 118 (2002), 3-15 • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by the Milnor fiber of a central arrangement, we study the cohomology of a family of cyclic covers of the complement of an arbitrary arrangement. We give an explicit proof of the polynomial periodicity of the Betti numbers of the members of this family of cyclic covers.

Hall-Littlewood vertex operators and generalized Kostka polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
A family of vertex operators that generalizes those given by Jing for the Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions is presented. These operators produce symmetric functions related to the Poincare polynomials referred to as generalized Kostka polynomials in the same way that Jing's operator produces symmetric functions related to Kostka-Foulkes polynomials. These operators are then used to derive commutation relations and new relations involving the generalized Kostka coefficients. Such relations may be interpreted as identities in the (GL(n) x C^*)-equivariant K-theory of the nullcone.

T=0 Partition Functions for Potts Antiferromagnets on Square Lattice Strips with (Twisted) Periodic Boundary Conditions
Published in J. Phys A (Letts.) 32, L489-L493 (1999) • View PublicationBIB
We present exact calculations of the zero-temperature partition function for the q-state Potts antiferromagnet (equivalently, the chromatic polynomial) for two families of arbitrarily long strip graphs of the square lattice with periodic boundary conditions in the transverse direction and (i) periodic (ii) twisted periodic boundary conditions in the longitudinal direction, so that the strip graphs are embedded on a (i) torus (ii) Klein bottle. In the limit of infinite length, we calculate the exponent of the entropy, W(q), show it to be the same for (i) and (ii), and determine its analytic structure.

Local tree-width, excluded minors, and approximation algorithms
Published • View PublicationBIB
The local tree-width of a graph G=(V,E) is the function ltw^G: N -> N that associates with every natural number r the maximal tree-width of an r-neighborhood in G. Our main graph theoretic result is a decomposition theorem for graphs with excluded minors that essentially says that such graphs can be decomposed into trees of graphs of bounded local tree-width. As an application of this theorem, we show that a number of combinatorial optimization problems, such as Minimum Vertex Cover, Minimum Dominating Set, and Maximum Independent Set have a polynomial time approximation scheme when restricted to a class of graphs with an excluded minor.

Fermionic formulas for level-restricted generalized Kostka polynomials and coset branching functions
Published in Commun.Math.Phys. 220 (2001) 105-164 • View PublicationBIB
Level-restricted paths play an important role in crystal theory. They correspond to certain highest weight vectors of modules of quantum affine algebras. We show that the recently established bijection between Littlewood--Richardson tableaux and rigged configurations is well-behaved with respect to level-restriction and give an explicit characterization of level-restricted rigged configurations. As a consequence a new general fermionic formula for the level-restricted generalized Kostka polynomial is obtained. Some coset branching functions of type $A$ are computed by taking limits of these fermionic formulas.

Une identité remarquable en théorie des partitions

We prove an identity about partitions, previously conjectured in the study of shifted Jack polynomials (math.CO/9903020). The proof given is using $λ$-ring techniques. It would be interesting to obtain a bijective proof.

Left-modular elements
Published in J. Combin. Theory (A) 91 (2000), 369-385. • View PublicationBIB
Left-modularity is a concept that generalizes modularity in lattice theory. In this paper, we give a characterization of left-modular elements and derive two formulae for the characteristic polynomial of a lattice with such an element, one of which generalizes Stanley's Partial Factorization Theorem for a geometric lattice with a modular element. Both formulae provide us with inductive proofs of Blass and Sagan's Total Factorization Theorem for LL lattices. The characteristic polynomials and Mobius functions of non-crossing partition lattices and shuffle posets are computed as examples.

Random vicious walks and random matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
Lock step walker model is a one-dimensional integer lattice walker model in discrete time. Suppose that initially there are infinitely many walkers on the non-negative even integer sites. At each tick of time, each walker moves either to its left or to its right with equal probability. The only constraint is that no two walkers can occupy the same site at the same time. It is proved that in the large time limit, a certain conditional probability of the displacement of the leftmost walker is identical to the limiting distribution of the properly scaled largest eigenvalue of a random GOE matrix (GOE Tracy-Widom distribution). The proof is based on the bijection between path configurations and semistandard Young tableaux established recently by Guttmann, Owczarek and Viennot. Statistics of semistandard Young tableaux is analyzed using the Hankel determinant expression for the probability from the work of Rains and the author. The asymptotics of the Hankel determinant is obtained by applying the Deift-Zhou steepest-descent method to the Riemann-Hilbert problem for the related orthogonal polynomials.

Torus actions, equivariant moment-angle complexes, and coordinate subspace arrangements
Published in J. Math. Sci. (N. Y.) 113 (2003), no. 4, 558-568 • View PublicationBIB
We show that the cohomology algebra of the complement of a coordinate subspace arrangement in m-dimensional complex space is isomorphic to the cohomology algebra of Stanley-Reisner face ring of a certain simplicial complex on m vertices. (The face ring is regarded as a module over the polynomial ring on m generators.) Then we calculate the latter cohomology algebra by means of the standard Koszul resolution of polynomial ring. To prove these facts we construct an equivariant with respect to the torus action homotopy equivalence between the complement of a coordinate subspace arrangement and the moment-angle complex defined by the simplicial complex. The moment-angle complex is a certain subset of a unit poly-disk in m-dimensional complex space invariant with respect to the action of an m-dimensional torus. This complex is a smooth manifold provided that the simplicial complex is a simplicial sphere, but otherwise has more complicated structure. Then we investigate the equivariant topology of the moment-angle complex and apply the Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence. We also relate our results with well known facts in the theory of toric varieties and symplectic geometry.

On Alexander-Conway Polynomials for Virtual Knots and Links
A polynomial invariant of virtual links, arising from an invariant of links in thickened surfaces introduced by Jaeger, Kauffman, and Saleur, is defined and its properties are investigated. Examples are given that the invariant can detect chirality and even non-invertibility of virtual knots and links. Furthermore, it is shown that the polynomial satisfies a Conway-type skein relation - in contrast to the Alexander polynomial derived from the virtual link group.

New Examples of Potential Theory on Bratelli Diagrams
We consider potential theory on Bratteli diagrams arising from Macdonald polynomials. The case of Hall-Littlewood polynomials is particularly interesting; the elements of the diagram are partitions, the branching multiplicities are integers, the combinatorial dimensions are Green's polynomials, and the Jordan form of a randomly chosen unipotent upper triangular matrix over a finite field gives rise to a harmonic function. The case of Schur functions yields natural deformations of the Young lattice and Plancharel measure. Many harmonic functions are constructed and algorithms for sampling from the underlying probability measures are given.

Harmonic functions on multiplicative graphs and interpolation polynomials
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 7 (2000), paper R28 • View PublicationBIB
We construct examples of nonnegative harmonic functions on certain graded graphs: the Young lattice and its generalizations. Such functions first emerged in harmonic analysis on the infinite symmetric group. Our method relies on multivariate interpolation polynomials associated with Schur's S and P functions and with Jack symmetric functions. As a by-product, we compute certain Selberg-type integrals.

Ubiquity of Kostka polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We report about results revolving around Kostka-Foulkes and parabolic Kostka polynomials and their connections with Representation Theory and Combinatorics. It appears that the set of all parabolic Kostka polynomials forms a semigroup, which we call {\it Liskova semigroup}. We show that polynomials frequently appearing in Representation Theory and Combinatorics belong to the Liskova semigroup. Among such polynomials we study rectangular $q$-Catalan numbers; generalized exponents polynomials; principal specializations of the internal product of Schur functions; generalized $q$-Gaussian polynomials; parabolic Kostant partition function and its $q$-analog; certain generating functions on the set of transportation matrices. In each case we apply rigged configurations technique to obtain some interesting and new information about Kostka-Foulkes and parabolic Kostka polynomials, Kostant partition function, MacMahon, Gelfand-Tsetlin and Chan-Robbins polytopes. We describe certain connections between generalized saturation and Fulton's conjectures and parabolic Kostka polynomials; domino tableaux and rigged configurations. We study also some properties of $l$-restricted generalized exponents and the stable behaviour of certain Kostka-Foulkes polynomials.
