Triangulations and soliton graphs for totally positive Grassmannian
Published • View PublicationBIB
The KP equation is a nonlinear dispersive wave equation which provides an excellent model for resonant interactions of shallow-water waves. It is well known that regular soliton solutions of the KP equation may be constructed from points in the totally nonnegative Grassmannian Gr$(N,M)_{\geq 0}$. Kodama and Williams studied the asymptotic patterns (tropical limit) of KP solitons, called soliton graphs, and showed that they correspond to Postnikov's Le-diagrams. In this paper, we consider soliton graphs for the KP hierarchy, a family of commuting flows which are compatible with the KP equation. For the positive Grassmannian Gr$(2,M)_{>0}$, Kodama and Williams showed that soliton graphs are in bijection with triangulations of the $M$-gon. We extend this result to Gr$(N,M)_{>0}$ when $N=3$ and $M=6,7$ and $8$. In each case, we show that soliton graphs are in bijection with Postnikov's plabic graphs, which generalize Le-diagrams.

Positive Grassmannian and polyhedral subdivisions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The nonnegative Grassmannian is a cell complex with rich geometric, algebraic, and combinatorial structures. Its study involves interesting combinatorial objects, such as positroids and plabic graphs. Remarkably, the same combinatorial structures appeared in many other areas of mathematics and physics, e.g., in the study of cluster algebras, scattering amplitudes, and solitons. We discuss new ways to think about these structures. In particular, we identify plabic graphs and more general Grassmannian graphs with polyhedral subdivisions induced by 2-dimensional projections of hypersimplices. This implies a close relationship between the positive Grassmannian and the theory of fiber polytopes and the generalized Baues problem. This suggests natural extensions of objects related to the positive Grassmannian.

Moment curves and cyclic symmetry for positive Grassmannians
Published in Bull. Lond. Math. Soc. 51 (2019), no. 5, 900-916 • View PublicationBIB
We show that for each k and n, the cyclic shift map on the complex Grassmannian Gr(k,n) has exactly $\binom{n}{k}$ fixed points. There is a unique totally nonnegative fixed point, given by taking n equally spaced points on the trigonometric moment curve (if k is odd) or the symmetric moment curve (if k is even). We introduce a parameter q, and show that the fixed points of a q-deformation of the cyclic shift map are precisely the critical points of the mirror-symmetric superpotential $\mathcal{F}_q$ on Gr(k,n). This follows from results of Rietsch about the quantum cohomology ring of Gr(k,n). We survey many other diverse contexts which feature moment curves and the cyclic shift map.

Plabic R-matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
Postnikov's plabic graphs in a disk are used to parametrize totally positive Grassmannians. In recent years plabic graphs have found numerous applications in math and physics. One of the key features of the theory is the fact that if a plabic graph is reduced, the face weights can be uniquely recovered from boundary measurements. On surfaces more complicated than a disk this property is lost. In this paper we undertake a comprehensive study of a certain semi-local transformation of weights for plabic networks on a cylinder that preserve boundary measurements. We call this a plabic R-matrix. We show that plabic R-matrices have underlying cluster algebra structure, generalizing recent work of Inoue-Lam-Pylyavskyy. Special cases of transformations we consider include geometric R-matrices appearing in Berenstein-Kazhdan theory of geometric crystals, and also certain transformations appearing in a recent work of Goncharov-Shen.

Purity and separation for oriented matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
Leclerc and Zelevinsky, motivated by the study of quasi-commuting quantum flag minors, introduced the notions of strongly separated and weakly separated collections. These notions are closely related to the theory of cluster algebras, to the combinatorics of the double Bruhat cells, and to the totally positive Grassmannian. A key feature, called the purity phenomenon, is that every maximal by inclusion strongly (resp., weakly) separated collection of subsets in $[n]$ has the same cardinality. In this paper, we extend these notions and define $\mathcal{M}$-separated collections for any oriented matroid $\mathcal{M}$. We show that maximal by size $\mathcal{M}$-separated collections are in bijection with fine zonotopal tilings (if $\mathcal{M}$ is a realizable oriented matroid), or with one-element liftings of $\mathcal{M}$ in general position (for an arbitrary oriented matroid). We introduce the class of pure oriented matroids for which the purity phenomenon holds: an oriented matroid $\mathcal{M}$ is pure if $\mathcal{M}$-separated collections form a pure simplicial complex, i.e., any maximal by inclusion $\mathcal{M}$-separated collection is also maximal by size. We pay closer attention to several special classes of oriented matroids: oriented matroids of rank $3$, graphical oriented matroids, and uniform oriented matroids. We classify pure oriented matroids in these cases. An oriented matroid of rank $3$ is pure if and only if it is a positroid (up to reorienting and relabeling its ground set). A graphical oriented matroid is pure if and only if its underlying graph is an outerplanar graph, that is, a subgraph of a triangulation of an $n$-gon. We give a simple conjectural characterization of pure oriented matroids by forbidden minors and prove it for the above classes of matroids (rank $3$, graphical, uniform).

Positive Geometries and Canonical Forms
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recent years have seen a surprising connection between the physics of scattering amplitudes and a class of mathematical objects--the positive Grassmannian, positive loop Grassmannians, tree and loop Amplituhedra--which have been loosely referred to as "positive geometries". The connection between the geometry and physics is provided by a unique differential form canonically determined by the property of having logarithmic singularities (only) on all the boundaries of the space, with residues on each boundary given by the canonical form on that boundary. In this paper we initiate an exploration of "positive geometries" and "canonical forms" as objects of study in their own right in a more general mathematical setting. We give a precise definition of positive geometries and canonical forms, introduce general methods for finding forms for more complicated positive geometries from simpler ones, and present numerous examples of positive geometries in projective spaces, Grassmannians, and toric, cluster and flag varieties. We also illustrate a number of strategies for computing canonical forms which yield interesting representations for the forms associated with wide classes of positive geometries, ranging from the simplest Amplituhedra to new expressions for the volume of arbitrary convex polytopes.

The Chow form of a reciprocal linear space
Published • View PublicationBIB
A reciprocal linear space is the image of a linear space under coordinate-wise inversion. These fundamental varieties describe the analytic centers of hyperplane arrangements and appear as part of the defining equations of the central path of a linear program. Their structure is controlled by an underlying matroid. This provides a large family of hyperbolic varieties, recently introduced by Shamovich and Vinnikov. Here we give a definite determinantal representation to the Chow form of a reciprocal linear space. One consequence is the existence of symmetric rank-one Ulrich sheaves on reciprocal linear spaces. Another is a representation of the entropic discriminant as a sum of squares. For generic linear spaces, the determinantal formulas obtained are closely related to the Laplacian of the complete graph and generalizations to simplicial matroids. This raises interesting questions about the combinatorics of hyperbolic varieties and connections with the positive Grassmannian.

Wilson Loop diagrams and Positroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study a new application of the positive Grassmanian to Wilson loop diagrams (or MHV diagrams) for scattering amplitudes in N=4 Super Yang-Mill theory ($N=4$ SYM). There has been much interest in studying this theory via the positive Grassmanians using BCFW recursion. This is the first attempt to study MHV diagrams for planar Wilson loop calculations (or planar amplitudes) in terms of positive Grassmannians. We codify Wilson loop diagrams completely in terms of matroids. This allows us to apply the combinatorial tools in matroid theory used to identify positroids, (non-negative Grassmannians), to Wilson loop diagrams. In doing so, we find that certain non-planar Wilson loop diagrams define positive Grassmannians. While non-planar diagrams do not have physical meaning, this finding suggests that they may have value as an algebraic tool, and deserve further investigation.

Arrangements Of Minors In The Positive Grassmannian And a Triangulation of The Hypersimplex
Published • View PublicationBIB
The structure of zero and nonzero minors in the Grassmannian leads to rich combinatorics of matroids. In this paper, we investigate an even richer structure of possible equalities and inequalities between the minors in the positive Grassmannian. It was previously shown that arrangements of equal minors of largest value are in bijection with the simplices in a certain triangulation of the hypersimplex that was studied by Stanley, Sturmfels, Lam and Postnikov. Here we investigate the entire set of arrangements and its relations with this triangulation. First, we show that second largest minors correspond to the facets of the simplices. We then introduce the notion of cubical distance on the dual graph of the triangulation, and study its relations with the arrangement of t-th largest minors. Finally, we show that arrangements of largest minors induce a structure of partially ordered sets on the entire collection of minors. We use the Lam and Postnikov circuit triangulation of the hypersimplex to describe a 2-dimensional grid structure of this poset.

Arrangements of equal minors in the positive Grassmannian
Published • View PublicationBIB
We discuss arrangements of equal minors of totally positive matrices. More precisely, we investigate the structure of equalities and inequalities between the minors. We show that arrangements of equal minors of largest value are in bijection with sorted sets, which earlier appeared in the context of alcoved polytopes and Gröbner bases. Maximal arrangements of this form correspond to simplices of the alcoved triangulation of the hypersimplex; and the number of such arrangements equals the Eulerian number. On the other hand, we prove in many cases that arrangements of equal minors of smallest value are exactly weakly separated sets. Weakly separated sets, originally introduced by Leclerc and Zelevinsky, are closely related to the positive Grassmannian and the associated cluster algebra. However, we also construct examples of arrangements of smallest minors which are not weakly separated using chain reactions of mutations of plabic graphs.

A positive Grassmannian analogue of the permutohedron
Published • View PublicationBIB
The classical permutohedron Perm is the convex hull of the points (w(1),...,w(n)) in R^n where w ranges over all permutations in the symmetric group. This polytope has many beautiful properties -- for example it provides a way to visualize the weak Bruhat order: if we orient the permutohedron so that the longest permutation w_0 is at the "top" and the identity e is at the "bottom," then the one-skeleton of Perm is the Hasse diagram of the weak Bruhat order. Equivalently, the paths from e to w_0 along the edges of Perm are in bijection with the reduced decompositions of w_0. Moreover, the two-dimensional faces of the permutohedron correspond to braid and commuting moves, which by the Tits Lemma, connect any two reduced expressions of w_0. In this note we introduce some polytopes Br(k,n) (which we call bridge polytopes) which provide a positive Grassmannian analogue of the permutohedron. In this setting, BCFW bridge decompositions of reduced plabic graphs play the role of reduced decompositions. We define Br(k,n) and explain how paths along its edges encode BCFW bridge decompositions of the longest element pi(k,n) in the circular Bruhat order. We also show that two-dimensional faces of Br(k,n) correspond to certain local moves for plabic graphs, which by a result of Postnikov [Pos06], connect any two reduced plabic graphs associated to pi(k,n). All of these results can be generalized to the positive parts of Schubert cells. A useful tool in our proofs is the fact that our polytopes are isomorphic to certain Bruhat interval polytopes. Conversely, our results on bridge polytopes allow us to deduce some corollaries about the structure of Bruhat interval polytopes.

Crystal approach to affine Schubert calculus
Published in Int Math Res Notices (2016) 2016 (8): 2239-2294 • View PublicationBIB
We apply crystal theory to affine Schubert calculus, Gromov-Witten invariants for the complete flag manifold, and the positroid stratification of the positive Grassmannian. We introduce operators on decompositions of elements in the type-$A$ affine Weyl group and produce a crystal reflecting the internal structure of the generalized Young modules whose Frobenius image is represented by stable Schubert polynomials. We apply the crystal framework to products of a Schur function with a $k$-Schur function, consequently proving that a subclass of 3-point Gromov-Witten invariants of complete flag varieties for $\mathbb C^n$ enumerate the highest weight elements under these operators. Included in this class are the Schubert structure constants in the (quantum) product of a Schubert polynomial with a Schur function $s_λ$ for all $|λ^\vee|< n$. Another by-product gives a highest weight formulation for various fusion coefficients of the Verlinde algebra and for the Schubert decomposition of certain positroid classes.

Cluster Algebras and the Positive Grassmannian
Published • View PublicationBIB
Plabic graphs are intimately connected to the positroid stratification of the positive Grassmannian. The duals to these graphs are quivers, and it is possible to associate to them cluster algebras. For the top-cell graph of $Gr_{+}(k,n)$, this cluster algebra is the homogeneous coordinate ring of the corresponding positroid variety. We prove that the same statement holds for plabic graphs describing lower dimensional cells. In this way we obtain a map from the positroid strata onto cluster subalgebras of $Gr_{+}(k,n)$. We explore some of the consequences of this map for tree-level scattering amplitudes in $\mathcal N=4$ super Yang-Mills theory.
Linked Partitions and Permutation Tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
Linked partitions are introduced by Dykema in the study of transforms in free probability theory, whereas permutation tableaux are introduced by Steingrímsson and Williams in the study of totally positive Grassmannian cells. Let $[n]=\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$. Let $L(n,k)$ denote the set of linked partitions of $[n]$ with $k$ blocks, let $P(n,k)$ denote the set of permutations of $[n]$ with $k$ descents, and let $T(n,k)$ denote the set of permutation tableaux of length $n$ with $k$ rows. Steingrímsson and Williams found a bijection between the set of permutation tableaux of length $n$ with $k$ rows and the set of permutations of $[n]$ with $k$ weak excedances. Corteel and Nadeau gave a bijection from the set of permutation tableaux of length $n$ with $k$ columns to the set of permutations of $[n]$ with $k$ descents. In this paper, we establish a bijection between $L(n,k)$ and $P(n,k-1)$ and a bijection between $L(n,k)$ and $T(n,k)$. Restricting the latter bijection to noncrossing linked partitions, we find that the corresponding permutation tableaux can be characterized by pattern avoidance.
Scattering Amplitudes and the Positive Grassmannian
We establish a direct connection between scattering amplitudes in planar four-dimensional theories and a remarkable mathematical structure known as the positive Grassmannian. The central physical idea is to focus on on-shell diagrams as objects of fundamental importance to scattering amplitudes. We show that the all-loop integrand in N=4 SYM is naturally represented in this way. On-shell diagrams in this theory are intimately tied to a variety of mathematical objects, ranging from a new graphical representation of permutations to a beautiful stratification of the Grassmannian G(k,n) which generalizes the notion of a simplex in projective space. All physically important operations involving on-shell diagrams map to canonical operations on permutations; in particular, BCFW deformations correspond to adjacent transpositions. Each cell of the positive Grassmannian is naturally endowed with positive coordinates and an invariant measure which determines the on-shell function associated with the diagram. This understanding allows us to classify and compute all on-shell diagrams, and give a geometric understanding for all the non-trivial relations among them. Yangian invariance of scattering amplitudes is transparently represented by diffeomorphisms of G(k,n) which preserve the positive structure. Scattering amplitudes in (1+1)-dimensional integrable systems and the ABJM theory in (2+1) dimensions can both be understood as special cases of these ideas. On-shell diagrams in theories with less (or no) supersymmetry are associated with exactly the same structures in the Grassmannian, but with a measure deformed by a factor encoding ultraviolet singularities. The Grassmannian representation of on-shell processes also gives a new understanding of the all-loop integrand for scattering amplitudes, presenting all integrands in a novel dLog form which directly reflects the underlying positive structure.

Bipartite Field Theories: from D-Brane Probes to Scattering Amplitudes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce and initiate the investigation of a general class of 4d, N=1 quiver gauge theories whose Lagrangian is defined by a bipartite graph on a Riemann surface, with or without boundaries. We refer to such class of theories as Bipartite Field Theories (BFTs). BFTs underlie a wide spectrum of interesting physical systems, including: D3-branes probing toric Calabi-Yau 3-folds, their mirror configurations of D6-branes, cluster integrable systems in (0+1) dimensions and leading singularities in scattering amplitudes for N=4 SYM. While our discussion is fully general, we focus on models that are relevant for scattering amplitudes. We investigate the BFT perspective on graph modifications, the emergence of Calabi-Yau manifolds (which arise as the master and moduli spaces of BFTs), the translation between square moves in the graph and Seiberg duality and the identification of dual theories by means of the underlying Calabi-Yaus, the phenomenon of loop reduction and the interpretation of the boundary operator for cells in the positive Grassmannian as higgsing in the BFT. We develop a technique based on generalized Kasteleyn matrices that permits an efficient determination of the Calabi-Yau geometries associated to arbitrary graphs. Our techniques allow us to go beyond the planar limit by both increasing the number of boundaries of the graphs and the genus of the underlying Riemann surface. Our investigation suggests a central role for Calabi-Yau manifolds in the context of leading singularities, whose full scope is yet to be uncovered.

The tropical totally positive Grassmannian
Published • View PublicationBIB
Tropical algebraic geometry is the geometry of the tropical semiring (R, min, +). The theory of total positivity is a natural generalization of the study of matrices with all minors positive. In this paper we introduce the totally positive part of the tropicalization of an arbitrary affine variety, an object which has the structure of a polyhedral fan. We then investigate the case of the Grassmannian, denoting the resulting fan \Trop^+ Gr_{k,n}. We show that \Trop^+ Gr_{2,n} is the Stanley-Pitman fan, which is combinatorially the fan dual to the (type A_{n-3}) associahedron, and that \Trop^+ Gr_{3,6} and \Trop^+ Gr_{3,7} are closely related to the fans dual to the types D_4 and E_6 associahedra. These results are reminiscent of the results of Fomin and Zelevinsky, and Scott, who showed that the Grassmannian has a natural cluster algebra structure which is of types A_{n-3}, D_4, and E_6 for Gr_{2,n}, Gr_{3,6}, and Gr_{3,7}. We suggest a general conjecture about the positive part of the tropicalization of a cluster algebra.
