Quantum cohomology via vicious and osculating walkers

We relate the counting of rational curves intersecting Schubert varieties of the Grassmannian to the counting of certain non-intersecting lattice paths on the cylinder, so-called vicious and osculating walkers. These lattice paths form exactly solvable statistical mechanics models and are obtained from solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation. The eigenvectors of the transfer matrices of these models yield the idempotents of the Verlinde algebra of the gauged u(n)-WZNW model. The latter is known to be closely related to the small quantum cohomology ring of the Grassmannian. We establish further that the partition functions of the vicious and osculating walker model are given in terms of Postnikov's toric Schur functions and can be interpreted as generating functions for Gromov-Witten invariants.
Avoiding colored partitions of two elements in the pattern sense
Enumeration of pattern-avoiding objects is an active area of study with connections to such disparate regions of mathematics as Schubert varieties and stack-sortable sequences. Recent research in this area has brought attention to colored permutations and colored set partitions. A colored partition of a set $S$ is a partition of $S$ with each element receiving a color from the set $[k]=\{1,2,...,k\}$. Let $Π_n\wr C_k$ be the set of partitions of $[n]$ with colors from $[k]$.
In an earlier work, the authors study pattern avoidance in colored set partitions in the equality sense. Here we study pattern avoidance in colored partitions in the pattern sense. We say that $σ\inΠ_n\wr C_k$ contains $π\in Π_m\wr C_\ell$ in the pattern sense if $σ$ contains a copy $π$ when the colors are ignored and the colors on this copy of $π$ are order isomorphic to the colors on $π$. Otherwise we say that $σ$ avoids $π$.
We focus on patterns from $Π_2\wr C_2$ and find that many familiar and some new integer sequences appear. We provide bijective proofs wherever possible, and we provide formulas for computing those sequences that are new.

We characterize by pattern avoidance the Schubert varieties for GL_n which are local complete intersections (lci). For those Schubert varieties which are local complete intersections, we give an explicit minimal set of equations cutting out their neighborhoods at the identity. Although the statement of our characterization only requires ordinary pattern avoidance, showing that the Schubert varieties not satisfying our conditions are not lci appears to require working with more general notions of pattern avoidance. The Schubert varieties defined by inclusions, originally introduced by Gasharov and Reiner, turn out to be an important subclass, and we further develop some of their combinatorics. Applications include formulas for Kostant polynomials and presentations of cohomology rings for lci Schubert varieties.
GL(p) x GL(q)-orbit closures on the flag variety and Schubert structure constants for (p,q)-pairs
We give positive combinatorial descriptions of Schubert structure constants $c_{u,v}^w$ for the full flag variety in type $A_{n-1}$ when $u$ and $v$ form what we refer to as a "$(p,q)$-pair" ($p+q=n$). The key observation is that a certain subset of the $GL(p,\mathbb{C}) \times GL(q,\mathbb{C})$-orbit closures on the flag variety (those satisfying an easily stated pattern avoidance condition) are Richardson varieties. The result on structure constants follows when one combines this observation with a theorem of Brion concerning intersection numbers of spherical subgroup orbit closures and Schubert varieties.

Let $G$ be a complex quasi-simple algebraic group and $G/P$ be a partial flag variety. The projections of Richardson varieties from the full flag variety form a stratification of $G/P$. We show that the closure partial order of projected Richardson varieties agrees with that of a subset of Schubert varieties in the affine flag variety of $G$. Furthermore, we compare the torus-equivariant cohomology and $K$-theory classes of these two stratifications by pushing or pulling these classes to the affine Grassmannian. Our work generalizes results of Knutson, Lam, and Speyer for the Grassmannian of type $A$.

The Wronski map is a finite, PGL_2(C)-equivariant morphism from the Grassmannian Gr(d,n) to a projective space (the projectivization of a vector space of polynomials). We consider the following problem. If C_r < PGL_2(C) is a cyclic subgroup of order r, how may C_r-fixed points are in the in a fibre of the Wronski map over a C_r-fixed point in the base?
In this paper, we compute a general answer in terms of r-ribbon tableaux. When r=2, this computation gives the number of real points in the fibre of the Wronski map over a real polynomial with purely imaginary roots. More generally, we can compute the number of real points in certain intersections of Schubert varieties.
When r divides d(n-d) our main result says that the generic number of C_r-fixed points in the fibre is the number of standard r-ribbon tableaux rectangular shape (n-d)^d. Computing by a different method, we show that the answer in this case is also given by the number of of standard Young tableaux of shape (n-d)^d that are invariant under N/r iterations of jeu de taquin promotion. Together, these two results give a new proof of Rhoades' cyclic sieving theorem for promotion on rectangular tableaux.
We prove analogous results for dihedral group actions.
Avoiding Colored Partitions of Lengths Two and Three
Pattern avoidance in the symmetric group $S_n$ has provided a number of useful connections between seemingly unrelated problems from stack-sorting to Schubert varieties. Recent work has generalized these results to $S_n\wr C_c$, the objects of which can be viewed as "colored permutations".
Another body of research that has grown from the study of pattern avoidance in permutations is pattern avoidance in $Π_n$, the set of set partitions of $[n]$. Pattern avoidance in set partitions is a generalization of the well-studied notion of noncrossing partitions.
Motivated by recent results in pattern avoidance in $S_n \wr C_c$ we provide a catalog of initial results for pattern avoidance in colored partitions, $Π_n \wr C_c$. We note that colored set partitions are not a completely new concept. \emph{Signed} (2-colored) set partitions appear in the work of Björner and Wachs involving the homology of partition lattices. However, we seek to study these objects in a new enumerative context.

Patch ideals encode neighbourhoods of a variety in GL_n/B. For Peterson varieties we determine generators for these ideals and show they are complete intersections, and thus Cohen-Macaulay and Gorenstein. Consequently, we combinatorially describe the singular locus of the Peterson variety; give an explicit equivariant K-theory localization formula; and extend some results of [B. Kostant '96] and of D. Peterson to intersections of Peterson varieties with Schubert varieties. We conjecture that the projectivized tangent cones are Cohen-Macaulay, and that their h-polynomials are nonnegative and upper-semicontinuous. Similarly, we use patch ideals to briefly analyze other examples of torus invariant subvarieties of GL_n/B, including Richardson varieties and Springer fibers.
Generalizing Tanisaki's ideal via ideals of truncated symmetric functions

We define a family of ideals $I_h$ in the polynomial ring $\mathbb{Z}[x_1,...,x_n]$ that are parametrized by Hessenberg functions $h$ (equivalently Dyck paths or ample partitions). The ideals $I_h$ generalize algebraically a family of ideals called the Tanisaki ideal, which is used in a geometric construction of permutation representations called Springer theory. To define $I_h$, we use polynomials in a proper subset of the variables ${x_1,...,x_n}$ that are symmetric under the corresponding permutation subgroup. We call these polynomials {\em truncated symmetric functions} and show combinatorial identities relating different kinds of truncated symmetric polynomials. We then prove several key properties of $I_h$, including that if $h>h'$ in the natural partial order on Dyck paths then $I_{h} \subset I_{h'}$, and explicitly construct a Gröbner basis for $I_h$. We use a second family of ideals $J_h$ for which some of the claims are easier to see, and prove that $I_h = J_h$. The ideals $J_h$ arise in work of Ding, Develin-Martin-Reiner, and Gasharov-Reiner on a family of Schubert varieties called partition varieties. Using earlier work of the first author, the current manuscript proves that the ideals $I_h = J_h$ generalize the Tanisaki ideals both algebraically and geometrically, from Springer varieties to a family of nilpotent Hessenberg varieties.

Let $W$ be a finite reflection group. For a given $w \in W$, the following assertion may or may not be satisfied:
(*) The principal Bruhat order ideal of $w$ contains as many elements as there are regions in the inversion hyperplane arrangement of $w$.
We present a type independent combinatorial criterion which characterises the elements $w\in W$ that satisfy (*). A couple of immediate consequences are derived:
(1) The criterion only involves the order ideal of $w$ as an abstract poset. In this sense, (*) is a poset-theoretic property.
(2) For $W$ of type $A$, another characterisation of (*), in terms of pattern avoidance, was previously given in collaboration with Linusson, Shareshian and Sjöstrand. We obtain a short and simple proof of that result.
(3) If $W$ is a Weyl group and the Schubert variety indexed by $w \in W$ is rationally smooth, then $w$ satisfies (*).

The purpose of this note is to give a refinement of the product formula proved in [1] for the Poincare polynomial of a smooth Schubert variety in the flag variety of an algebraic group G over C. This yields a factorization of the number of elements in a Bruhat interval [e,w] in the Weyl group W of G provided the Schubert variety associated to w is smooth. This gives an elementary necessary condition for a Schubert variety in the flag variety to be smooth.

Schubert varieties in finite dimensional flag manifolds G/P are a well-studied family of projective varieties indexed by elements of the corresponding Weyl group W. In particular, there are many tests for smoothness and rational smoothness of these varieties. One key result due to Lakshmibai-Sandhya is that in type A the smooth Schubert varieties are precisely those that are indexed by permutations that avoid the patterns 4231 and 3412. Recently, there has been a flurry of research related to the infinite dimensional analogs of flag manifolds corresponding with G being a Kac-Moody group and W being an affine Weyl group or parabolic quotient. In this paper we study the case when W is the affine Weyl group of type A or the affine permutations. We develop the notion of pattern avoidance for affine permutations. Our main result is a characterization of the rationally smooth Schubert varieties corresponding to affine permutations in terms of the patterns 4231 and 3412 and the twisted spiral permutations.
Puzzles, positroid varieties, and equivariant K-theory of Grassmannians
Vakil studied the intersection theory of Schubert varieties in the Grassmannian in a very direct way: he degenerated the intersection of a Schubert variety X_mu and opposite Schubert variety X^nu to a union {X^lambda}, with repetition. This degeneration proceeds in stages, and along the way he met a collection of more complicated subvarieties, which he identified as the closures of certain locally closed sets.
We show that Vakil's varieties are _positroid varieties_, which in particular shows they are normal, Cohen-Macaulay, have rational singularities, and are defined by the vanishing of Plücker coordinates [Knutson-Lam-Speyer]. We determine the equations of the Vakil variety associated to a partially filled ``puzzle'' (building on the appendix to [Vakil]), and extend Vakil's proof to give a geometric proof of the puzzle rule from [Knutson-Tao '03] for equivariant Schubert calculus.
The recent paper [Anderson-Griffeth-Miller] establishes (abstractly; without a formula) three positivity results in equivariant K-theory of flag manifolds G/P. We demonstrate one of these concretely, giving a corresponding puzzle rule.
Projections of Richardson Varieties

While the projections of Schubert varieties in a full generalized flag manifold G/B to a partial flag manifold $G/P$ are again Schubert varieties, the projections of Richardson varieties (intersections of Schubert varieties with opposite Schubert varieties) are not always Richardson varieties. The stratification of G/P by projections of Richardson varieties arises in the theory of total positivity and also from Poisson and noncommutative geometry.
In this paper we show that many of the geometric properties of Richardson varieties hold more generally for projected Richardson varieties; they are normal, Cohen-Macaulay, have rational singularities, and are compatibly Frobenius split with respect to the standard splitting. Indeed, we show that the projected Richardson varieties are the only compatibly split subvarieties, providing an example of the recent theorem [Schwede, Kumar-Mehta] that a Frobenius split scheme has only finitely many compatibly split subvarieties. (The G/B case was treated by [Hague], whose proof we simplify somewhat.)
One combinatorial analogue of a Richardson variety is the order complex of the corresponding Bruhat interval in W; this complex is known to be an EL-shellable ball [Bjorner-Wachs '82]. We prove that the projection of such a complex into the order complex of the Bruhat order on W/W_P is again a shellable ball. This requires extensive analysis of "P-Bruhat order", a generalization of the k-Bruhat order of [Bergeron-Sottile '98]. In the case that G/P is minuscule (e.g. a Grassmannian), we show that its Grobner degeneration takes each projected Richardson variety to the Stanley-Reisner scheme of its corresponding ball.
Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials and drift configurations

The coefficients of the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials $P_{v,w}(q)$ are nonnegative integers that are upper semicontinuous on Bruhat order. Conjecturally, the same properties hold for $h$-polynomials $H_{v,w}(q)$ of local rings of Schubert varieties. This suggests a parallel between the two families of polynomials. We prove our conjectures for Grassmannians, and more generally, covexillary Schubert varieties in complete flag varieties, by deriving a combinatorial formula for $H_{v,w}(q)$. We introduce \emph{drift configurations} to formulate a new and compatible combinatorial rule for $P_{v,w}(q)$. From our rules we deduce, for these cases, the coefficient-wise inequality $P_{v,w}(q)\preceq H_{v,w}(q)$.
Pieri rules for the K-theory of cominuscule Grassmannians

We prove Pieri formulas for the multiplication with special Schubert classes in the K-theory of all cominuscule Grassmannians. For Grassmannians of type A this gives a new proof of a formula of Lenart. Our formula is new for Lagrangian Grassmannians, and for orthogonal Grassmannians it proves a special case of a conjectural Littlewood-Richardson rule of Thomas and Yong. Recent work of Thomas and Yong and of E. Clifford has shown that the full Littlewood-Richardson rule for orthogonal Grassmannians follows from the Pieri case proved here. We describe the K-theoretic Pieri coefficients both as integers determined by positive recursive identities and as the number of certain tableaux. The proof is based on a computation of the sheaf Euler characteristic of triple intersections of Schubert varieties, where at least one Schubert variety is special.

Affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties can be thought of as affine analogs of classical Deligne-Lusztig varieties, or Frobenius-twisted analogs of Schubert varieties. We provide a method for proving a non-emptiness statement for affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties inside the affine flag variety associated to affine Weyl group elements satisfying a certain length additivity hypothesis. In particular, we prove that non-emptiness holds whenever it is conjectured to do so for alcoves in the shrunken dominant Weyl chamber, providing a partial converse to the emptiness results of Goertz, Haines, Kottwitz, and Reuman. Our technique involves the work of Geck and Pfeiffer on cuspidal conjugacy classes, in addition to an analysis of the combinatorics of certain fully commutative elements in the finite Weyl group.
A unification of permutation patterns related to Schubert varieties
We obtain new connections between permutation patterns and singularities of Schubert varieties, by giving a new characterization of Gorenstein varieties in terms of so called bivincular patterns. These are generalizations of classical patterns where conditions are placed on the location of an occurrence in a permutation, as well as on the values in the occurrence. This clarifies what happens when the requirement of smoothness is weakened to factoriality and further to Gorensteinness, extending work of Bousquet-Melou and Butler (2007), and Woo and Yong (2006). We also show how mesh patterns, introduced by Branden and Claesson (2011), subsume many other types of patterns and define an extension of them called marked mesh patterns. We use these new patterns to further simplify the description of Gorenstein Schubert varieties and give a new description of Schubert varieties that are defined by inclusions, introduced by Gasharov and Reiner (2002). We also give a description of 123-hexagon avoiding permutations, introduced by Billey and Warrington (2001), Dumont permutations and cycles in terms of marked mesh patterns.

We study Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity for points of Schubert varieties in the complete flag variety, by Groebner degenerations of the Kazhdan-Lusztig ideal. In the covexillary case, we give a positive combinatorial rule for multiplicity by establishing (with a Groebner basis) a reduced and equidimensional limit whose Stanley-Reisner simplicial complex is homeomorphic to a shellable ball or sphere. We show that multiplicity counts the number of facets of this complex. We also obtain a formula for the Hilbert series of the local ring. In particular, our work gives a multiplicity rule for Grassmannian Schubert varieties, providing alternative statements and proofs to formulae of [Lakshmibai-Weyman '90], [Rosenthal-Zelevinsky '01], [Krattenthaler '01], [Kreiman-Lakshmibai '04] and [Woo-Yong '09]. We suggest extensions of our methodology to the general case.
The Brauer loop scheme and orbital varieties

A. Joseph invented multidegrees in [Jo84] to study orbital varieties, which are the components of an orbital scheme, itself constructed by intersecting a nilpotent orbit with a Borel subalgebra. Their multidegrees, known as Joseph polynomials, give a basis of a (Springer) representation of the Weyl group. In the case of the nilpotent orbit $\{ M^2=0 \}$, the orbital varieties can be indexed by noncrossing chord diagrams in the disc. In this paper we study the normal cone to the orbital scheme inside this nilpotent orbit $\{ M^2 = 0 \}$. This gives a better-motivated construction of the Brauer loop scheme we introduced in [KZJ07], whose components are indexed by all chord diagrams (now possibly with crossings) in the disc. The multidegrees of its components, the Brauer loop varieties, were shown to reproduce the ground state of the Brauer loop model in statistical mechanics [DFZJ06]. Here, we reformulate and slightly generalize these multidegrees in order to express them as solutions of the rational quantum Knizhnik--Zamolodchikov equation associated to the Brauer algebra. In particular, the vector of the multidegrees satisfies two sets of equations, corresponding to the $e_i$ and $f_i$ generators of the Brauer algebra. We describe here the geometric meaning of both $e_i$ and $f_i$ equations in our slightly extended setting. We also describe the corresponding actions at the level of orbital varieties: while only the $e_i$ equations make sense directly on the Joseph polynomials, the $f_i$ equations also appear if one introduces a broader class of varieties. We explain the connection of the latter with matrix Schubert varieties.
