Structure constants for K-theory of Grassmannians, revisited
Published • View PublicationBIB
The problem of computing products of Schubert classes in the cohomology ring can be formulated as the problem of expanding skew Schur polynomials into the basis of ordinary Schur polynomials. In contrast, the problem of computing the structure constants of the Grothendieck ring of a Grassmannian variety with respect to its basis of Schubert structure sheaves is not equivalent to expanding skew stable Grothendieck polynomials into the basis of ordinary stable Grothendiecks. Instead, we show that the appropriate K-theoretic analogy is through the expansion of skew reverse plane partitions into the basis of polynomials which are Hopf-dual to stable Grothendieck polynomials. We combinatorially prove this expansion is determined by Yamanouchi set-valued tableaux. A by-product of our results is a dual approach proof for Buch's K-theoretic Littlewood-Richardson rule for the product of stable Grothendieck polynomials.

Monodromy and $K$-theory of Schubert Curves via Generalized Jeu de Taquin
We establish a combinatorial connection between the real geometry and the $K$-theory of complex Schubert curves $S(λ_\bullet)$, which are one-dimensional Schubert problems defined with respect to flags osculating the rational normal curve. In a previous paper, the second author showed that the real geometry of these curves is described by the orbits of a map $ω$ on skew tableaux, defined as the commutator of jeu de taquin rectification and promotion. In particular, the real locus of the Schubert curve is naturally a covering space of $\mathbb{RP}^1$, with $ω$ as the monodromy operator. We provide a fast, local algorithm for computing $ω$ without rectifying the skew tableau, and show that certain steps in our algorithm are in bijective correspondence with Pechenik and Yong's genomic tableaux, which enumerate the $K$-theoretic Littlewood-Richardson coefficient associated to the Schubert curve. Using this bijection, we give purely combinatorial proofs of several numerical results involving the $K$-theory and real geometry of $S(λ_\bullet)$.

The monodromy of real Bethe vectors for the Gaudin model
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Bethe algebras for the Gaudin model act on the multiplicity space of tensor products of irreducible $ \mathfrak{gl}_r $-modules and have simple spectrum over real points. This fact is proved by Mukhin, Tarasov and Varchenko who also develop a relationship to Schubert intersections over real points. We use an extension to $ \overline{M}_{0,n+1}(\mathbb{R}) $ of these Schubert intersections, constructed by Speyer, to calculate the monodromy of the spectrum of the Bethe algebras. We show this monodromy is described by the action of the cactus group $ J_n $ on tensor products of irreducible $ \mathfrak{gl}_r $-crystals.

Staircase diagrams and enumeration of smooth Schubert varieties
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A. Vol 150 (2017), 328-376 • View PublicationBIB
We enumerate smooth and rationally smooth Schubert varieties in the classical finite types A, B, C, and D, extending Haiman's enumeration for type A. To do this enumeration, we introduce a notion of staircase diagrams on a graph. These combinatorial structures are collections of steps of irregular size, forming interconnected staircases over the given graph. Over a Dynkin-Coxeter graph, the set of "nearly-maximally labelled" staircase diagrams is in bijection with the set of Schubert varieties with a complete Billey-Postnikov (BP) decomposition. We can then use an earlier result of the authors showing that all finite-type rationally smooth Schubert varieties have a complete BP decomposition to finish the enumeration.

Matrix Schubert varieties and Gaussian conditional independence models
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics, (2016), 1-38 • View PublicationBIB
Matrix Schubert varieties are certain varieties in the affine space of square matrices which are determined by specifying rank conditions on submatrices. We study these varieties for generic matrices, symmetric matrices, and upper triangular matrices in view of two applications to algebraic statistics: we observe that special conditional independence models for Gaussian random variables are intersections of matrix Schubert varieties in the symmetric case. Consequently, we obtain a combinatorial primary decomposition algorithm for some conditional independence ideals. We also characterize the vanishing ideals of Gaussian graphical models for generalized Markov chains. In the course of this investigation, we are led to consider three related stratifications, which come from the Schubert stratification of a flag variety. We provide some combinatorial results, including describing the stratifications using the language of rank arrays and enumerating the strata in each case.

Wonderful Symmetric Varieties and Schubert Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Extending results of Wyser, we determine formulas for the equivariant cohomology classes of closed orbits of certain families of spherical subgroups of $GL_n$ on the flag variety $GL_n/B$. Putting this together with a slight extension of the results of Can-Joyce-Wyser, we arrive at a family of polynomial identities which show that certain explicit sums of Schubert polynomials factor as products of linear forms.

The Prism tableau model for Schubert polynomials
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 154 (2018), 551-582 • View PublicationBIB
The Schubert polynomials lift the Schur basis of symmetric polynomials into a basis for Z[x1,x2,...]. We suggest the "prism tableau model" for these polynomials. A novel aspect of this alternative to earlier results is that it directly invokes semistandard tableaux; it does so as part of a colored tableau amalgam. In the Grassmannian case, a prism tableau with colors ignored is a semistandard Young tableau. Our arguments are developed from the Groebner geometry of matrix Schubert varieties.

Toric matrix Schubert varieties and their polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a matrix Schubert variety $\overline{X_π}$, it can be written as $\overline{X_π}=Y_π\times \mathbb{C}^q$ (where $q$ is maximal possible). We characterize when $Y_π$ is toric (with respect to a $(\mathbb{C}^*)^{2n-1}$-action) and study the associated polytope $Φ(\mathbb{P}(Y_π))$ of its projectivization. We construct regular triangulations of $Φ(\mathbb{P}(Y_π))$ which we show are geometric realizations of a family of subword complexes. Subword complexes were introduced by Knutson and Miller in 2004, who also showed that they are homeomorphic to balls or spheres and raised the question of their polytopal realizations.

A Schubert basis in equivariant elliptic cohomology
We address the problem of defining Schubert classes independently of a reduced word in equivariant elliptic cohomology, based on the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis of a corresponding Hecke algebra. We study some basic properties of these classes, and make two important conjectures about them: a positivity conjecture, and the agreement with the topologically defined Schubert classes in the smooth case. We prove some special cases of these conjectures.

Accessible Proof of Standard Monomial Basis for Coordinatization of Schubert Sets of Flags
Published • View PublicationBIB
The main results of this paper are accessible with only basic linear algebra. Given an increasing sequence of dimensions, a flag in a vector space is an increasing sequence of subspaces with those dimensions. The set of all such flags (the flag manifold) can be projectively coordinatized using products of minors of a matrix. These products are indexed by tableaux on a Young diagram. A basis of "standard monomials" for the vector space generated by such projective coordinates over the entire flag manifold has long been known. A Schubert variety is a subset of flags specified by a permutation. Lakshmibai, Musili, and Seshadri gave a standard monomial basis for the smaller vector space generated by the projective coordinates restricted to a Schubert variety. Reiner and Shimozono made this theory more explicit by giving a straightening algorithm for the products of the minors in terms of the right key of a Young tableau. Since then, Willis introduced scanning tableaux as a more direct way to obtain right keys. This paper uses scanning tableaux to give more-direct proofs of the spanning and the linear independence of the standard monomials. In the appendix it is noted that this basis is a weight basis for the dual of a Demazure module for a Borel subgroup of GL(n). This paper contains a complete proof that the characters of these modules (the key polynomials) can be expressed as the sums of the weights for the tableaux used to index the standard monomial bases.

Involution words: counting problems and connections to Schubert calculus for symmetric orbit closures
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 160 (2018), 217-260 • View PublicationBIB
Involution words are variations of reduced words for involutions in Coxeter groups, first studied under the name of "admissible sequences" by Richardson and Springer. They are maximal chains in Richardson and Springer's weak order on involutions. This article is the first in a series of papers on involution words, and focuses on their enumerative properties. We define involution analogues of several objects associated to permutations, including Rothe diagrams, the essential set, Schubert polynomials, and Stanley symmetric functions. These definitions have geometric interpretations for certain intervals in the weak order on involutions. In particular, our definition of "involution Schubert polynomials" can be viewed as a Billey-Jockusch-Stanley type formula for cohomology class representatives of $\mathrm{O}_n$- and $\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}$-orbit closures in the flag variety, defined inductively in recent work of Wyser and Yong. As a special case of a more general theorem, we show that the involution Stanley symmetric function for the longest element of a finite symmetric group is a product of staircase-shaped Schur functions. This implies that the number of involution words for the longest element of a finite symmetric group is equal to the dimension of a certain irreducible representation of a Weyl group of type $B$.

Equivariant K-theory of Grassmannians II: The Knutson-Vakil conjecture
Published in Compositio Math. 153 (2017) 667-677 • View PublicationBIB
In 2005, A. Knutson--R. Vakil conjectured a puzzle rule for equivariant K-theory of Grassmannians. We resolve this conjecture. After giving a correction, we establish a modified rule by combinatorially connecting it to the authors' recently proved tableau rule for the same Schubert calculus problem.

Two Murnaghan-Nakayama rules in Schubert calculus
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Murnaghan-Nakayama rule expresses the product of a Schur function with a Newton power sum in the basis of Schur functions. We establish a version of the Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for Schubert polynomials and a version for the quantum cohomology ring of the Grassmannian. These rules compute all intersections of Schubert cycles with tautological classes coming from the Chern character.

Equivariant Chow classes of matrix orbit closures
Published in Transformation groups, 2016 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be the product $GL_r(C) \times (C^\times)^n$. We show that the $G$-equivariant Chow class of a $G$ orbit closure in the space of $r$-by-$n$ matrices is determined by a matroid. To do this, we split the natural surjective map from the $G$ equvariant Chow ring of the space of matrices to the torus equivariant Chow ring of the Grassmannian. The splitting takes the class of a Schubert variety to the corresponding factorial Schur polynomial, and also has the property that the class of a subvariety of the Grassmannian is mapped to the class of the closure of those matrices whose row span is in the variety.

Double eta polynomials and equivariant Giambelli formulas
Published in J. London Math. Society 94 (2016), 209-229 • Search Publication
We use Young's raising operators to introduce and study double eta polynomials, which are an even orthogonal analogue of Wilson's double theta polynomials. Our double eta polynomials give Giambelli formulas which represent the equivariant Schubert classes in the torus-equivariant cohomology ring of even orthogonal Grassmannians, and specialize to the single eta polynomials of Buch, Kresch, and the author.

Combinatorial description of the cohomology of the affine flag variety
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct the affine version of the Fomin-Kirillov algebra, called the affine FK algebra, to investigate the combinatorics of affine Schubert calculus for type $A$. We introduce Murnaghan-Nakayama elements and Dunkl elements in the affine FK algebra. We show that they are commutative as Bruhat operators, and the commutative algebra generated by these operators is isomorphic to the cohomology of the affine flag variety. We show that the cohomology of the affine flag variety is product of the cohomology of an affine Grassmannian and a flag variety, which are generated by MN elements and Dunkl elements respectively. The Schubert classes in cohomology of the affine Grassmannian (resp. the flag variety) can be identified with affine Schur functions (resp. Schubert polynomials) in a quotient of the polynomial ring. Affine Schubert polynomials, polynomial representatives of the Schubert class in the cohomology of the affine flag variety, can be defined in the product of two quotient rings using the Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand operators interpreted as divided difference operators acting on the affine Fomin-Kirillov algebra. As for other applications, we obtain Murnaghan-Nakayama rules both for the affine Schubert polynomials and affine Stanley symmetric functions. We also define $k$-strong-ribbon tableaux from Murnaghan-Nakayama elements to provide a new formula of $k$-Schur functions. This formula gives the character table of the representation of the symmetric group whose Frobenius characteristic image is the $k$-Schur function.

Equivariant K-theory of Grassmannians
Published in Forum of Mathematics Pi (2017), Vol. 5, e3, 128pp • View PublicationBIB
We address a unification of the Schubert calculus problems solved by [A. Buch '02] and [A. Knutson-T. Tao '03]. That is, we prove a combinatorial rule for the structure coefficients in the torus-equivariant K-theory of Grassmannians with respect to the basis of Schubert structure sheaves. We thereby deduce the conjectural rule of [H. Thomas-A. Yong '13] for the same coefficients. Both rules are positive in the sense of [D. Anderson-S. Griffeth-E. Miller '11] (and moreover in a stronger form). Our work is based on the combinatorics of genomic tableaux and a generalization of [M.-P. Schutzenberger '77]'s jeu de taquin.

We show a Z^2-filtered algebraic structure and a "quantum to classical" principle on the torus-equivariant quantum cohomology of a complete flag variety of general Lie type, generalizing earlier works of Leung and the second author. We also provide various applications on equivariant quantum Schubert calculus, including an equivariant quantum Pieri rule for any partial flag variety of Lie type A.

Totally nonnegative Grassmannian and Grassmann polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
These are lecture notes intended to supplement my second lecture at the Current Developments in Mathematics conference in 2014. In the first half of article, we give an introduction to the totally nonnegative Grassmannian together with a survey of some more recent work. In the second half of the article, we give a definition of a Grassmann polytope motivated by work of physicists on the amplituhedron. We propose to use Schubert calculus and canonical bases to replace linear algebra and convexity in the theory of polytopes.
