Revisiting pattern avoidance and quasisymmetric functions
Let S_n be the nth symmetric group. Given a set of permutations Pi we denote by S_n(Pi) the set of permutations in S_n which avoid Pi in the sense of pattern avoidance. Consider the generating function Q_n(Pi) = sum_pi F_{Des pi} where the sum is over all pi in S_n(Pi) and F_{Des pi} is the fundamental quasisymmetric function corresponding to the descent set of pi. Hamaker, Pawlowski, and Sagan introduced Q_n(Pi) and studied its properties, in particular, finding criteria for when this quasisymmetric function is symmetric or even Schur nonnegative for all n >= 0. The purpose of this paper is to continue their investigation answering some of their questions, proving one of their conjectures, as well as considering other natural questions about Q_n(Pi). In particular we look at Pi of small cardinality, superstandard hooks, partial shuffles, Knuth classes, and a stability property.

Andrews-Gordon Type Series for Schur's Partition Identity
We construct an evidently positive multiple series as a generating function for partitions satisfying the multiplicity condition in Schur's partition theorem. Refinements of the series when parts in the said partitions are classified according to their parities or values mod 3 are also considered. Direct combinatorial interpretations of the series are provided.

Some algebraic structures in KPZ universality
We review some algebraic and combinatorial structures that underlie models in the KPZ universality class.Emphasis is placed on the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence and its geometric lifting due to A.N.Kirillov. We present how these combinatorial constructions are used to analyse the structure of solvable models in the KPZ class and lead to computation of their statistics via connecting to representation theoretic objects such as Schur, Macdonald and Whittaker functions, Young tableaux and Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns. We also present how fundamental representation theoretic concepts, such as the Cauchy identity, the Pieri rule and the branching rule, can be used, alongside RSK correspondences, and can be combined with probabilistic ideas, in order to construct integrable stochastic dynamics on two dimensional arrays of Gelfand-Tsetlin type, in ways that couple different one dimensional stochastic processes. For example, interacting particle systems, on the one hand, and processes related to eigenvalues of random matrices, on the other, thus illuminating the emergence of random matrix distributions in interacting stochastic processes. The goal of the notes is to expose some of the overarching principles, which have driven a significant number of developments in the field.

Identities on Factorial Grothendieck Polynomials
Gustafson and Milne proved an identity on the Schur function indexed by a partition of the form $(λ_1-n+k,λ_2-n+k,\ldots,λ_k-n+k)$. On the other hand, Fehér, Némethi and Rimányi found an identity on the Schur function indexed by a partition of the form $(m-k,\ldots,m-k, λ_1,\ldots,λ_k)$. Fehér, Némethi and Rimányi gave a geometric explanation of their identity, and they raised the question of finding a combinatorial proof. In this paper, we establish a Gustafson-Milne type identity as well as a Fehér-Némethi-Rimányi type identity for factorial Grothendieck polynomials. Specializing a factorial Grothendieck polynomial to a Schur function, we obtain a combinatorial proof of the Fehér-Némethi-Rimányi identity.

A classification of monotone ribbons with full Schur support with application to the classification of full equivalence classes
We consider ribbon shapes, not necessarily connected, whose rows, with at least two boxes in each, are in monotone length order. These ribbons are uniquely defined by a pair of partitions: the row partition consisting of the row lengths in decreasing order, and the overlapping partition whose entries count the total number of columns with two boxes in the successive ribbon shapes obtained by sequentially subtracting the longest row. The support of such ribbon Schur functions, considered as a subposet of the dominance order lattice on partitions, has the row partition as bottom element, and, as top element, the partition whose two parts consist of the total number of columns, and the total number of columns of length two respectively. We give a complete system of linear inequalities in terms of the partition pair defining the aforesaid ribbon shape under which the ribbon Schur function attains all the Schur interval when expanded in the basis of Schur functions. We then conclude that the Gaetz-Hardt-Sridhar necessary condition for a connected ribbon to have full equivalence class is equivalent to the condition for a monotone connected ribbon to have full Schur support. That is, the set of partitions with full equivalence class is a subset of those monotone connected ribbons with full Schur support. M. Gaetz, W. Hardt and S. Sridhar conjectured that the necessary condition is also sufficient which translates now to every monotone connected ribbon with full Schur support has full equivalence class. The main tool of our analysis is the structure of the companion tableau of a ribbon Littlewood-Richardson (LR) tableau detected by the descent set defined by the composition whose parts are the ribbon row lengths.

Melting lollipop chromatic quasisymmetric functions and Schur expansion of unicellular LLT polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this work, we generalize and utilize the linear relations of LLT polynomials introduced by Lee \cite{Lee}. By using the fact that the chromatic quasisymmetric functions and the unicellular LLT polynomials are related via plethystic substitution and thus they satisfy the same linear relations, we can apply the linear relations to both sets of functions. As a result, in the chromatic quasisymmetric function side, we find a class of $e$-positive graphs, called \emph{melting lollipop graphs}, and explicitly prove the $e$-unimodality. In the unicellular LLT side, we obtain Schur expansion formulas for LLT polynomials corresponding to certain set of graphs, namely, complete graphs, path graphs, lollipop graphs and melting lollipop graphs.

Ehrhart positivity and Demazure characters
Published in Algebraic and Geometric Combinatorics on Lattice Polytopes, pp. 56-71 (2019) • View PublicationBIB
Demazure characters, also known as key polynomials, generalize the classical Schur polynomials. In particular, when all variables are set equal to $1$, these polynomials count the number of integer points in a certain class of Gelfand--Tsetlin polytopes. This property highlights the interaction between the corresponding polyhedral and combinatorial structures via Ehrhart theory. In this paper, we give an overview of results concerning the interplay between the geometry of Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes and their Ehrhart polynomials. Motivated by strong computer evidence, we propose several conjectures about the non-negativity of the coefficients of such polynomials.

Binomial Eulerian polynomials for colored permutations
Binomial Eulerian polynomials first appeared in work of Postnikov, Reiner and Williams on the face enumeration of generalized permutohedra. They are $γ$-positive (in particular, palindromic and unimodal) polynomials which can be interpreted as $h$-polynomials of certain flag simplicial polytopes and which admit interesting Schur $γ$-positive symmetric function generalizations. This paper introduces analogues of these polynomials for $r$-colored permutations with similar properties and uncovers some new instances of equivariant $γ$-positivity in geometric combinatorics.

Poset models for Weyl group analogs of symmetric functions and Schur functions
The `Weyl symmetric functions' studied here naturally generalize classical symmetric (polynomial) functions, and `Weyl bialternants,' sometimes also called Weyl characters, analogize the Schur functions. For this generalization, the underlying symmetry group is a finite Weyl group. A `splitting poset' for a Weyl bialternant is an edge-colored ranked poset possessing a certain structural property and a natural weighting of its elements so that the weighted sum of poset elements is the given Weyl bialternant. Connected such posets are of combinatorial interest in part because they are rank symmetric and rank unimodal and have nice quotient-of-product expressions for their rank generating functions. Supporting graphs of weight bases for irreducible semisimple Lie algebra representations provide one large family of examples. However, many splitting posets can be obtained outside of this Lie theoretic context. This monograph provides a tutorial on Weyl bialternants / Weyl symmetric functions and splitting posets that is largely self-contained and independent of Lie algebra representation theory. New results are also obtained.

Composition Tableaux basis for Schur functors and the Plücker algebra
We show that combinatorial objects called row-strict composition tableaux, introduced by Mason and Remmel in 2014 and closely related to the quasi-symmetric Schur functions of Haglund-Luoto-Mason-van Willigenburg, form a basis for Schur functors of finite free modules over arbitrary commutative rings. When the ring is the complex numbers, this produces a new basis for the irreducible polynomial representations of $\operatorname{GL}_n(\mathbb{C})$. Moreover, in this case it also produces new basis for the Plücker algebra, a subalgebra of the polynomial ring over $\mathbb{C}$ in $n^2$ variables, which is of independent combinatorial and geometric interests. As an aside we also show that these results hold for other combinatorial objects called reverse row strict tableau.

Restricting Schubert classes to symplectic Grassmannians using self-dual puzzles
Given a Schubert class on $Gr(k,V)$ where $V$ is a symplectic vector space of dimension $2n$, we consider its restriction to the symplectic Grassmannian $SpGr(k,V)$ of isotropic subspaces. Pragacz gave tableau formulae for positively computing the expansion of these $H^*(Gr(k,V))$ classes into Schubert classes of the target when $k=n$, which corresponds to expanding Schur polynomials into $Q$-Schur polynomials. Coskun described an algorithm for their expansion when $k\leq n$. We give a puzzle-based formula for these expansions, while extending them to equivariant cohomology. We make use of a new observation that usual Grassmannian puzzle pieces are already enough to do some $2$-step Schubert calculus, and apply techniques from quantum integrable systems (``scattering diagrams'').

Monochromatic Schur triples in randomly perturbed dense sets of integers
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a dense subset $A$ of the first $n$ positive integers, we provide a short proof showing that for $p=ω(n^{-2/3})$ the so-called {\sl randomly perturbed} set $A \cup [n]_p$ a.a.s. has the property that any $2$-colouring of it has a monochromatic Schur triple, i.e.\ a triple of the form $(a,b,a+b)$. This result is optimal since there are dense sets $A$, for which $A\cup [n]_p$ does not possess this property for $p=o(n^{-2/3})$.

Polynomial Schur's theorem

We resolve the Ramsey problem for $\{x,y,z:x+y=p(z)\}$ for all polynomials $p$ over $\mathbb{Z}$. In particular, we characterise all polynomials that are $2$-Ramsey, that is, those $p(z)$ such that any $2$-colouring of $\mathbb{N}$ contains infinitely many monochromatic solutions for $x+y=p(z)$. For polynomials that are not $2$-Ramsey, we characterise all $2$-colourings of $\mathbb{N}$ that are not $2$-Ramsey, revealing that certain divisibility barrier is the only obstruction to $2$-Ramseyness for $x+y=p(z)$.
Cyclic quasi-symmetric functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The ring of cyclic quasi-symmetric functions and its non-Escher subring are introduced in this paper. A natural basis consists of fundamental cyclic quasi-symmetric functions; for the non-Escher subring they arise as toric $P$-partition enumerators, for toric posets $P$ with a total cyclic order. The associated structure constants are determined by cyclic shuffles of permutations. We then prove the following positivity phenomenon: for every non-hook shape $λ$, the coefficients in the expansion of the Schur function $s_λ$ in terms of fundamental cyclic quasi-symmetric functions are nonnegative. The proof relies on the existence of a cyclic descent map on the standard Young tableaux (SYT) of shape $λ$. The theory has applications to the enumeration of cyclic shuffles and SYT by cyclic descents.
$k$-Schur expansions of Catalan functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We make a broad conjecture about the $k$-Schur positivity of Catalan functions, symmetric functions which generalize the (parabolic) Hall-Littlewood polynomials. We resolve the conjecture with positive combinatorial formulas in cases which address the $k$-Schur expansion of (1) Hall-Littlewood polynomials, proving the $q=0$ case of the strengthened Macdonald positivity conjecture of Lapointe, Lascoux, and Morse; (2) the product of a Schur function and a $k$-Schur function when the indexing partitions concatenate to a partition, describing a class of Gromov-Witten invariants for the quantum cohomology of complete flag varieties; (3) $k$-split polynomials, proving a substantial case of a problem of Broer and Shimozono-Weyman on parabolic Hall-Littlewood polynomials. In addition, we prove the conjecture that $k$-Schur functions defined in terms of $k$-split polynomials agree with strong tableau $k$-Schur functions.

Generalized Stability of Heisenberg Coefficients
Published • View PublicationBIB
Stembridge introduced the notion of stability for Kronecker triples which generalize Murnaghan's classical stability result for Kronecker coefficients. Sam and Snowden proved a conjecture of Stembridge concerning stable Kronecker triple, and they also showed an analogous result for Littlewood--Richardson coefficients. Heisenberg coefficients are Schur structure constants of the Heisenberg product which generalize both Littlewood--Richardson coefficients and Kronecker coefficients. We show that any stable triple for Kronecker coefficients or Littlewood--Richardson coefficients also stabilizes Heisenberg coefficients, and we classify the triples stabilizing Heisenberg coefficients. We also follow Vallejo's idea of using matrix additivity to generate Heisenberg stable triples.

Bumpless Pipedreams, Reduced Word Tableaux and Stanley Symmetric Functions
Lam, Lee and Shimozono introduced the structure of bumpless pipedreams in their study of back stable Schubert calculus. They found that a specific family of bumpless pipedreams, called EG-pipedreams, can be used to interpret the Edelman-Greene coefficients appearing in the expansion of a Stanley symmetric function in the basis of Schur functions. It is well known that the Edelman-Greene coefficients can also be interpreted in terms of reduced word tableaux for permutations. Lam, Lee and Shimozono proposed the problem of finding a shape preserving bijection between reduced word tableaux for a permutation $w$ and EG-pipedreams of $w$. In this paper, we construct such a bijection. The key ingredients are two new developed isomorphic tree structures associated to $w$: the modified Lascoux-Schützenberger tree of $w$ and the Edelman-Greene tree of $w$. Using the Little map, we show that the leaves in the modified Lascoux-Schützenberger of $w$ are in bijection with the reduced word tableaux for $w$. On the other hand, applying the droop operation on bumpless pipedreams also introduced by Lam, Lee and Shimozono, we show that the leaves in the Edelman-Greene tree of $w$ are in bijection with the EG-pipedreams of $w$. This allows us to establish a shape preserving one-to-one correspondence between reduced word tableaux for $w$ and EG-pipedreams of $w$.

Pattern avoidance and quasisymmetric functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a set of permutations Pi, let S_n(Pi) denote the set of permutations in the symmetric group S_n that avoid every element of Pi in the sense of pattern avoidance. Given a subset S of {1,...,n-1}, let F_S be the fundamental quasisymmetric function indexed by S. Our object of study is the generating function Q_n(Pi) = sum F_{Des sigma} where the sum is over all sigma in S_n(Pi) and Des sigma is the descent set of sigma. We characterize those Pi contained in S_3 such that Q_n(Pi) is symmetric or Schur nonnegative for all n. In the process, we show how each of the resulting Pi can be obtained from a theorem or conjecture involving more general sets of patterns. In particular, we prove results concerning symmetries, shuffles, and Knuth classes, as well as pointing out a relationship with the arc permutations of Elizalde and Roichman. Various conjectures and questions are mentioned throughout.

Some conjectures on the Schur expansion of Jack polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present positivity conjectures for the Schur expansion of Jack symmetric functions in two bases given by binomial coefficients. Partial results suggest that there are rich combinatorics to be found in these bases, including Eulerian numbers, Stirling numbers, quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux, and rook boards. These results also lead to further conjectures about the fundamental quasisymmetric expansions of these bases, which we prove for special cases.

The genomic Schur function is fundamental-positive
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 24, no. 1, 2020, 95-108 • View PublicationBIB
In work with A. Yong, the author introduced genomic tableaux to prove the first positive combinatorial rule for the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients in torus-equivariant $K$-theory of Grassmannians. We then studied the genomic Schur function $U_λ$, a generating function for such tableaux, showing that it is non-trivially a symmetric function, although generally not Schur-positive. Here we show that $U_λ$ is, however, positive in the basis of fundamental quasisymmetric functions. We give a positive combinatorial formula for this expansion in terms of gapless increasing tableaux; this is, moreover, the first finite expression for $U_λ$. Combined with work of A. Garsia and J. Remmel, this yields a compact combinatorial (but necessarily non-positive) formula for the Schur expansion of $U_λ$.
