Logarithmic concavity of Schur and related polynomials

We show that normalized Schur polynomials are strongly log-concave. As a consequence, we obtain Okounkov's log-concavity conjecture for Littlewood-Richardson coefficients in the special case of Kostka numbers.

Explicit Combinatorial Formulas for Some Irreducible Characters of the $GL_k\times \mathbb{S}_n$-module of multivariate diagonal harmonics
We give an explicit combinatorial formula for some irreducible components of $GL_k\times \mathbb{S}_n$-modules of multivariate diagonal harmonics. To this end we introduce a new path combinatorial object $T_{n,s}$ allowing us to give the formula directly in terms of Schur functions. This paper also contains formulas written in terms of Schur functions in the $q$ and $t$ variables for special cases of $\nabla(e_n)$, $\nabla^r(e_n)$ and $Δ'_{e_k}(e_n)$. We also give an interpretation in term of path to the adjoint dual Pieri rule applied on these $GL_k\times \mathbb{S}_n$-characters.

Indecomposable $0$-Hecke modules for extended Schur functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The extended Schur functions form a basis of quasisymmetric functions that contains the Schur functions. We provide a representation-theoretic interpretation of this basis by constructing $0$-Hecke modules whose quasisymmetric characteristics are the extended Schur functions. We further prove these modules are indecomposable.

Schur ring and Codes for $S$-subgroups over $\Z_{2}^{n}$
In this paper the relationship between $S$-subgroups in $\Z_{2}^{n}$ and binary codes is shown. If the codes used are both $P(T)$-codes and $G$-codes, then the $S$-subgroup is free. The codes constructed are cyclic, decimated or symmetric and the $S$-subgroups obtained are free under the action the cyclic permutation subgroup, invariants under the action the decimated permutation subgroup and symmetric under the action of symmetric permutation subgroup, respectively. Also it is shows that there is no codes generating whole $\Z_{2}^{n}$ in any $\G_{n}(a)$-complete $S$-set of the $S$-ring $\mathfrak{S}(\Z_{2}^{n},S_{n})$.
Peter-Weyl, Howe and Schur-Weyl theorems for current groups
The classical Peter-Weyl theorem describes the structure of the space of functions on a semi-simple algebraic group. On the level of characters (in type A) this boils down to the Cauchy identity for the products of Schur polynomials. We formulate and prove the analogue of the Peter-Weyl theorem for the current groups. In particular, in type A the corresponding characters identity is governed by the Cauchy identity for the products of q-Whittaker functions. We also formulate and prove a version of the Schur-Weyl theorem for current groups. The link between the Peter-Weyl and Schur-Weyl theorems is provided by the (current version of) Howe duality.

On some properties of symplectic Grothendieck polynomials
Published in J. Pure Appl. Algebra 225 (2021), 106463 • View PublicationBIB
Grothendieck polynomials, introduced by Lascoux and Schützenberger, are certain $K$-theory representatives for Schubert varieties. Symplectic Grothendieck polynomials, described more recently by Wyser and Yong, represent the $K$-theory classes of orbit closures for the complex symplectic group acting on the complete flag variety. We prove a transition formula for symplectic Grothendieck polynomials and study their stable limits. We show that each of the $K$-theoretic Schur $P$-functions of Ikeda and Naruse arises from a limiting procedure applied to symplectic Grothendieck polynomials representing certain "Grassmannian" orbit closures.

K-theory formulas for orthogonal and symplectic orbit closures
Published in Adv. Math. 372 (2020), 107299 • View PublicationBIB
The complex orthogonal and symplectic groups both act on the complete flag variety with finitely many orbits. We study two families of polynomials introduced by Wyser and Yong representing the $K$-theory classes of the closures of these orbits. Our polynomials are analogous to the Grothendieck polynomials representing $K$-classes of Schubert varieties, and we show that like Grothendieck polynomials, they are uniquely characterized among all polynomials representing the relevant classes by a certain stability property. We show that the same polynomials represent the equivariant $K$-classes of symmetric and skew-symmetric analogues of Knutson and Miller's matrix Schubert varieties. We derive explicit expressions for these polynomials in special cases, including a Pfaffian formula relying on a more general degeneracy locus formula of Anderson. Finally, we show that taking an appropriate limit of our representatives recovers the $K$-theoretic Schur $Q$-functions of Ikeda and Naruse.

Skew key polynomials and a generalized Littlewood-Richardson rule
Published • View PublicationBIB
Young's lattice is a partial order on integer partitions whose saturated chains correspond to standard Young tableaux, one type of combinatorial object that generates the Schur basis for symmetric functions. Generalizing Young's lattice, we introduce a new partial order on weak compositions that we call the key poset. Saturated chains in this poset correspond to standard key tableaux, the combinatorial objects that generate the key polynomials, a nonsymmetric polynomial generalization of the Schur basis. Generalizing skew Schur functions, we define skew key polynomials in terms of this new poset. Using weak dual equivalence, we give a nonnegative weak composition Littlewood-Richardson rule for the key expansion of skew key polynomials, generalizing the flagged Littlewood-Richardson rule of Reiner and Shimozono.

Transition between characters of classical groups, decomposition of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns and last passage percolation
Published in Adv. Math., 404-B, 108453 (2022) • View PublicationBIB
We study the combinatorial structure of the irreducible characters of the classical groups ${\rm GL}_n(\mathbb{C})$, ${\rm SO}_{2n+1}(\mathbb{C})$, ${\rm Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$, ${\rm SO}_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$ and the "non-classical" odd symplectic group ${\rm Sp}_{2n+1}(\mathbb{C})$, finding new connections to the probabilistic model of Last Passage Percolation (LPP). Perturbing the expressions of these characters as generating functions of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns, we produce two families of symmetric polynomials that interpolate between characters of ${\rm Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$ and ${\rm SO}_{2n+1}(\mathbb{C})$ and between characters of ${\rm SO}_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$ and ${\rm SO}_{2n+1}(\mathbb{C})$. We identify the first family as a one-parameter specialization of Koornwinder polynomials, for which we thus provide a novel combinatorial structure; on the other hand, the second family appears to be new. We next develop a method of Gelfand-Tsetlin pattern decomposition to establish identities between all these polynomials that, in the case of irreducible characters, can be viewed as branching rules. Through these formulas we connect orthogonal and symplectic characters, and more generally the interpolating polynomials, to LPP models with various symmetries, thus going beyond the link with classical Schur polynomials originally found by Baik and Rains (Duke Math. J., 2001). Taking the scaling limit of the LPP models, we finally provide an explanation of why the Tracy-Widom GOE and GSE distributions from random matrix theory admit formulations in terms of both Fredholm determinants and Fredholm Pfaffians.

Cometric Association Schemes
One may think of a $d$-class association scheme as a $(d+1)$-dimensional matrix algebra over $\mathbb{R}$ closed under Schur products. In this context, an imprimitive scheme is one which admits a subalgebra of block matrices, also closed under the Schur product. Such systems of imprimitivity provide us with quotient schemes, smaller association schemes which are often easier to understand, providing useful information about the structure of the larger scheme. For any association scheme we find a basis of $d+1$ idempotent matrices for the algebra. A cometric scheme is one whose idempotent basis may be ordered $E_0,E_1,...,E_d$ with polynomials $f_0,f_1,...,f_d$ giving $f_i\circ(E_1)=E_i$ and deg$(f_i)=i$ for each $i$. Throughout this thesis we are primarily interested in three goals: building new examples of cometric schemes, drawing connections between cometric schemes and other objects, and finding new realizability conditions on feasible parameter sets --- using these conditions to rule out open parameter sets when possible. After introducing association schemes, this thesis focuses on a few recent results regarding cometric schemes with small $d$. We begin by examining the matrix algebra, looking for low rank positive semidefinite matrices with few distinct entries and later establishing new conditions on realizable parameter sets. We then focus on imprimitive examples of both 3- and 4-class cometric schemes, generating new examples of the former while building realizability conditions for both. In each case, we examine the related $t$-distance sets, giving conditions which work towards equivalence; in the case of 3-class $Q$-antipodal schemes an equivalence is established. We conclude by partially extending a result of Brouwer and Koolen concerning the connectivity of graphs arising from metric schemes.

Doubly transitive lines II: Almost simple symmetries
We study lines through the origin of finite-dimensional complex vector spaces that enjoy a doubly transitive automorphism group. This paper classifies those lines that exhibit almost simple symmetries. We introduce a general recipe involving Schur covers to recover doubly transitive lines from their automorphism group. Combining our results with recent work on the affine case by Dempwolff and Kantor, we deduce a classification of all linearly dependent doubly transitive lines in real or complex space.

Bijective proofs of skew Schur polynomial factorizations
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A Volume 174, August 2020, 105241, 40pp • View PublicationBIB
In a recent paper, Ayyer and Behrend present for a wide class of partitions factorizations of Schur polynomials with an even number of variables where half of the variables are the reciprocals of the others into symplectic and/or orthogonal group characters, thereby generalizing results of Ciucu and Krattenthaler for rectangular shapes. Their proofs proceed by manipulations of determinants underlying the characters. The purpose of the current paper is to provide bijective proofs of such factorizations. The quantities involved have known combinatorial interpretations in terms of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns of various types or half Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns, which can in turn be transformed into perfect matchings of weighted trapezoidal honeycomb graphs. An important ingredient is then Ciucu's theorem for graphs with reflective symmetry. However, before being able to apply it, we need to employ a certain averaging procedure in order to achieve symmetric edge weights. This procedure is based on a "randomized" bijection, which can however also be turned into a classical bijection. For one type of Schur polynomial factorization, we also need an additional graph operation that almost doubles the underlying graph. Finally, our combinatorial proofs reveal that the factorizations under consideration can in fact also be generalized to skew shapes as discussed at the end of the paper.

Schur indices for noncommutative reality-based algebras with two nonreal basis elements
This article discusses the representation theory of noncommutative algebras reality-based algebras with positive degree map over their field of definition. When the standard basis contains exactly two nonreal elements, the main result expresses the noncommutative simple component as a generalized quaternion algebra over its field of definition. The field of real numbers will always be a splitting field for this algebra, but there are noncommutative table algebras of dimension $6$ with rational field of definition for which it is a division algebra. The approach has other applications, one of which shows noncommutative association scheme of rank $7$ must have at least three symmetric relations.

Enumeration of bounded lecture hall tableaux
Recently the authors introduced lecture hall tableaux in their study of multivariate little $q$-Jacobi polynomials. In this paper, we enumerate bounded lecture hall tableaux. We show that their enumeration is closely related to standard and semistandard Young tableaux. We also show that the number of bounded lecture hall tableaux is the coefficient of the Schur expansion of $s_λ(m+y_1,\dots,m+y_n)$. To prove this result, we use two main tools: non-intersecting lattice paths and bijections. In particular we use ideas developed by Krattenthaler to prove bijectively the hook content formula.

Chromatic symmetric functions in noncommuting variables revisited
In 1995 Stanley introduced a generalization of the chromatic polynomial of a graph $G$, called the chromatic symmetric function, $X_G$, which was generalized to noncommuting variables, $Y_G$, by Gebhard-Sagan in 2001. Recently there has been a renaissance in the study of $X_G$, in particular in classifying when $X_G$ is a positive linear combination of elementary symmetric or Schur functions. We extend this study from $X_G$ to $Y_G$, including establishing the multiplicativity of $Y_G$, and showing $Y_G$ satisfies the $k$-deletion property. Moreover, we completely classify when $Y_G$ is a positive linear combination of elementary symmetric functions in noncommuting variables, and similarly for Schur functions in noncommuting variables, in the sense of Bergeron-Hohlweg-Rosas-Zabrocki. We further establish the natural multiplicative generalization of the fundamental theorem of symmetric functions, now in noncommuting variables, and obtain numerous new bases for this algebra whose generators are chromatic symmetric functions in noncommuting variables. Finally, we show that of all known symmetric functions in noncommuting variables, only all elementary and specified Schur ones can be realized as $Y_G$ for some $G$.

Flagged $(\mathcal{P},ρ)$-partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the theory of $(\mathcal{P},ρ)$-partitions, depending on a poset $\mathcal{P}$ and a map $ρ$ from $\mathcal{P}$ to positive integers. The generating function $\mathfrak{F}_{\mathcal{P},ρ}$ of $(\mathcal{P},ρ)$-partitions is a polynomial that, when the images of $ρ$ tend to infinity, tends to Stanley's generating function $F_{\mathcal{P}}$ of $\mathcal{P}$-partitions. Analogous to Stanley's fundamental theorem for $\mathcal{P}$-partitions, we show that the set of $(\mathcal{P},ρ)$-partitions decomposes as a disjoint union of $(\mathcal{L},ρ)$-partitions where $\mathcal{L}$ runs over the set of linear extensions of $\mathcal{P}$. In this more general context, the set of all $\mathfrak{F}_{\mathcal{L},ρ}$ for linear orders $\mathcal{L}$ over determines a basis of polynomials. We thus introduce the notion of flagged $(\mathcal{P},ρ)$-partitions, and we prove that the set of all $\mathfrak{F}_{\mathcal{L},ρ}$ for flagged $(\mathcal{L},ρ)$-partitions for linear orders $\mathcal{L}$ is precisely the fundamental slide basis of the polynomial ring, introduced by the first author and Searles. Our main theorem shows that any generating function $\mathfrak{F}_{\mathcal{P},ρ}$ of flagged $(\mathcal{P},ρ)$-partitions is a positive integer linear combination of slide polynomials. As applications, we give a new proof of positivity of the slide product and, motivating our nomenclature, we also prove flagged Schur functions are slide positive.

Frobenius's last proof
Around about 1917, Issai Schur rediscovered the Rogers-Ramanujan identities, and proved a system of polynomial identities that imply them. Schur wrote that Georg Frobenius (his former advisor) had shown him a simple, direct proof of these polynomial identities. Schur did not see fit to reveal Frobenius's proof, preferring his own rather complicated proof. But it is easy enough to guess what this `simple, direct' proof must have been. As Frobenius died in 1917, we may call this `Frobenius's last proof'.

A Generalization of Schur's $P$- and $Q$-Functions
Published in Sem. Lothar. Combin. 81 (2020), Art. B81k • Search Publication
We introduce and study a generalization of Schur's $P$-/$Q$-functions associated to a polynomial sequence, which can be viewed as ``Macdonald's ninth variation'' for $P$-/$Q$-functions. This variation includes as special cases Schur's $P$-/$Q$-functions, Ivanov's factorial $P$-/$Q$-functions and the $t=-1$ specialization of Hall--Littlewood functions associated to the classical root systems. We establish several identities and properties such as generalizations of Schur's original definition of Schur's $Q$-functions, Cauchy-type identity, Józefiak--Pragacz--Nimmo formula for skew $Q$-functions, and Pieri-type rule for multiplication.

Exact Lower Bounds for Monochromatic Schur Triples and Generalizations
Published in Algorithmic Combinatorics: Enumerative Combinatorics, Special Functions and Computer Algebra (Veronika Pillwein, Carsten Schneider, eds.), Texts & Monographs in Symbolic Computation, pages 223-248, Springer, 2020. ISBN 978-3-030-44558-4 • View PublicationBIB
We derive exact and sharp lower bounds for the number of monochromatic generalized Schur triples $(x,y,x+ay)$ whose entries are from the set $\{1,\dots,n\}$, subject to a coloring with two different colors. Previously, only asymptotic formulas for such bounds were known, and only for $a\in\mathbb{N}$. Using symbolic computation techniques, these results are extended here to arbitrary $a\in\mathbb{R}$. Furthermore, we give exact formulas for the minimum number of monochromatic Schur triples for $a=1,2,3,4$, and briefly discuss the case $0<a<1$.
The Multiset Partition Algebra
We introduce the multiset partition algebra $\mathcal{MP}_k(ξ)$ over $F[ξ]$, where $F$ is a field of characteristic $0$ and $k$ is a positive integer. When $ξ$ is specialized to a positive integer $n$, we establish the Schur-Weyl duality between the actions of resulting algebra $\mathcal{MP}_k(n)$ and the symmetric group $S_n$ on $\text{Sym}^k(F^n)$. The construction of $\mathcal{MP}_k(ξ)$ generalizes to any vector $λ$ of non-negative integers yielding the algebra $\mathcal{MP}_λ(ξ)$ over $F[ξ]$ so that there is Schur-Weyl duality between the actions of $\mathcal{MP}_λ(n)$ and $S_n$ on $\text{Sym}^λ(F^n)$. We find the generating function for the multiplicity of each irreducible representation of $S_n$ in $\text{Sym}^λ(F^n)$, as $λ$ varies, in terms of a plethysm of Schur functions. As consequences we obtain an indexing set for the irreducible representations of $\mathcal{MP}_k(n)$, and the generating function for the multiplicity of an irreducible polynomial representation of $GL_n(F)$ when restricted to $S_n$. We show that $\mathcal{MP}_λ(ξ)$ embeds inside the partition algebra $\mathcal{P}_{|λ|}(ξ)$. Using this embedding, over $F$, we prove that $\mathcal{MP}_λ(ξ)$ is a cellular algebra, and $\mathcal{MP}_λ(ξ)$ is semisimple when $ξ$ is not an integer or $ξ$ is an integer such that $ξ\geq 2|λ|-1$. We give an insertion algorithm based on Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence realizing the decomposition of $\mathcal{MP}_λ(n)$ as $\mathcal{MP}_λ(n)\times \mathcal{MP}_λ(n)$-module.
