We obtain general identities for the product of two Schur functions in the case where one of the functions is indexed by a rectangular partition, and give their t-analogs using vertex operators. We study subspaces forming a filtration for the symmetric function space that lends itself to generalizing the theory of Schur functions and also provides a convenient environment for studying the Macdonald polynomials. We use our identities to prove that the vertex operators leave such subspaces invariant. We finish by showing that these operators act simply on the k-Schur functions, thus leading to a concept of irreducibility for these functions.

We consider a filtration of the symmetric function space given by $Λ^{(k)}_t$, the linear span of Hall-Littlewood polynomials indexed by partitions whose first part is not larger than $k$. We introduce symmetric functions called the $k$-Schur functions, providing an analog for the Schur functions in the subspaces $Λ^{(k)}_t$. We prove several properties for the $k$-Schur functions including that they form a basis for these subspaces that reduces to the Schur basis when $k$ is large. We also show that the connection coefficients for the $k$-Schur function basis with the Macdonald polynomials belonging to $Λ^{(k)}_t$ are polynomials in $q$ and $t$ with integral coefficients. In fact, we conjecture that these integral coefficients are actually positive, and give several other conjectures generalizing Schur function theory.
Self-Dual Symmetric Polynomials and Conformal Partitions
A conformal partition function ${\cal P}_n^m(s)$, which arose in the theory of Diophantine equations supplemented with additional restrictions, is concerned with {\it self-dual symmetric polynomials} -- reciprocal ${\sf R}^{\{m\}}_ {S_n}$ and skew-reciprocal ${\sf S}^{\{m\}}_{S_n}$ algebraic polynomials based on the polynomial invariants of the symmetric group $S_n$. These polynomials form an infinite commutative semigroup. Real solutions $λ_n(x_i)$ of corresponding algebraic Eqns have many important properties: homogeneity of 1-st order, duality upon the action of the conformal group ${\sf W}$, inverting both function $λ_n$ and the variables $x_i$, compatibility with trivial solution, {\it etc}. Making use of the relationship between Gaussian generating function for conformal partitions and Molien generating function for usual restricted partitions we derived the analytic expressions for ${\cal P}_n^m(s)$. The unimodality indices for the reciprocal and skew-reciprocal equations were found. The existence of algebraic functions $λ_n(x_i)$ invariant upon the action of both the finite group $G\subset S_n$ and conformal group ${\sf W}$ is discussed.

We consider the problem of computing the second elementary symmetric polynomial S^2_n(X) using depth-three arithmetic circuits of the form "sum of products of linear forms". We consider this problem over several fields and determine EXACTLY the number of multiplication gates required. The lower bounds are proved for inhomogeneous circuits where the linear forms are allowed to have constants; the upper bounds are proved in the homogeneous model. For reals and rationals, the number of multiplication gates required is exactly n-1; in most other cases, it is \ceil{n/2}. This problem is related to the Graham-Pollack theorem in algebraic graph theory. In particular, our results answer the following question of Babai and Frankl: what is the minimum number of complete bipartite graphs required to cover each edge of a complete graph an odd number of times? We show that for infinitely many n, the answer is \ceil{n/2}.

A number of conjectures have been given recently concerning the connection between the antiferromagnetic XXZ spin chain at $Δ= - \frac12$ and various symmetry classes of alternating sign matrices. Here we use the integrability of the XXZ chain to gain further insight into these developments. In doing so we obtain a number of new results using Baxter's $Q$ function for the XXZ chain for periodic, twisted and open boundary conditions. These include expressions for the elementary symmetric functions evaluated at the groundstate solution of the Bethe roots. In this approach Schur functions play a central role and enable us to derive determinant expressions which appear in certain natural double products over the Bethe roots. When evaluated these give rise to the numbers counting different symmetry classes of alternating sign matrices.

The present paper is a detailed version of math/0003031. We introduce and study a new basis in the algebra of symmetric functions. The elements of this basis are called the Frobenius-Schur functions (FS-functions, for short).
Our main motivation for studying the FS-functions is the fact that they enter a formula expressing the combinatorial dimension of a skew Young diagram in terms of the Frobenius coordinates. This formula plays a key role in the asymptotic character theory of the symmetric groups. The FS-functions are inhomogeneous, and their top homogeneous components coincide with the conventional Schur functions. The FS-functions are best described in the super realization of the algebra of symmetric functions. As supersymmetric functions, the FS-functions can be characterized as a solution to an interpolation problem.
Our main result is a simple determinantal formula for the transition coefficients between the FS-functions and the Schur functions. We also establish the FS analogs for a number of basic facts concerning the Schur functions: Jacobi-Trudi formula together with its dual form; combinatorial formula (expression in terms of tableaux); Giambelli formula and the Sergeev-Pragacz formula.
All these results hold for a large family of bases interpolating between the FS-functions and the ordinary Schur functions.

We investigate the quotient ring $R$ of the ring of formal power series $\Q[[x_1,x_2,...]]$ over the closure of the ideal generated by non-constant quasi-\break symmetric functions. We show that a Hilbert basis of the quotient is naturally indexed by Catalan paths (infinite Dyck paths). We also give a filtration of ideals related to Catalan paths from $(0,0)$ and above the line $y=x-k$. We investigate as well the quotient ring $R_n$ of polynomial ring in $n$ variables over the ideal generated by non-constant quasi-symmetric polynomials. We show that the dimension of $R_n$ is bounded above by the $n$th Catalan number.

q-Supernomial coefficients are generalizations of the q-binomial coefficients. They can be defined as the coefficients of the Hall-Littlewood symmetric function in a product of the complete symmetric functions or the elementary symmetric functions. Hatayama et al. give explicit expressions for these q-supernomial coefficients. A combinatorial expression as the generating function of ribbon tableaux with (co)spin statistic follows from the work of Lascoux, Leclerc and Thibon. In this paper we interpret the formulas by Hatayama et al. in terms of rigged configurations and provide an explicit statistic preserving bijection between rigged configurations and ribbon tableaux thereby establishing a new direct link between these combinatorial objects.

A lattice diagram is a finite set $L=\{(p_1,q_1),... ,(p_n,q_n)\}$ of lattice cells in the positive quadrant. The corresponding lattice diagram determinant is $Δ_L(\X;\Y)=\det \| x_i^{p_j}y_i^{q_j} \|$. The space $M_L$ is the space spanned by all partial derivatives of $Δ_L(\X;\Y)$. We denote by $M_L^0$ the $Y$-free component of $M_L$. For $μ$ a partition of $n+1$, we denote by $μ/ij$ the diagram obtained by removing the cell $(i,j)$ from the Ferrers diagram of $μ$. Using homogeneous partially symmetric polynomials, we give here a dual description of the vanishing ideal of the space $M_μ^0$ and we give the first known description of the vanishing ideal of $M_{μ/ij}^0$.

In an isomorphic copy of the ring of symmetric polynomials we study some families of polynomials which are indexed by rational weight vectors. These families include well known symmetric polynomials, such as the elementary, homogeneous, and power sum symmetric polynomials. We investigate properties of these families and focus on constructing their rational roots under a product induced by convolution. A direct application of the latter is to the description of the roots of certain multiplicative arithmetic functions (the core functions) under the convolution product.
Noncommutative symmetric functions and quasi-symmetric functions with two and more paramters
We define two-parameter families of noncommutative symmetric functions and quasi-symmetric functions, which appear to be the proper analogues of the Macdonald symmetric functions in these settings.

We extend work of McKay, Morse, and Wilf by giving exact formulas and asymptotic formulas for the number of skew Young tableaux T in two situations: (1) the "inside shape" and total number of cells of T are fixed, and (2) the inside shape of T is fixed. The proofs use the theory of symmetric functions and estimates for irreducible characters of the symmetric group due to Thoma, Vershik, Kerov, and Biane.

This article is devoted to the study of several algebras which are related to symmetric functions, and which admit linear bases labelled by various combinatorial objects: permutations (free quasi-symmetric functions), standard Young tableaux (free symmetric functions) and packed integer matrices (matrix quasi-symmetric functions). Free quasi-symmetric functions provide a kind of noncommutative Frobenius characteristic for a certain category of modules over the 0-Hecke algebras. New examples of indecomposable $H_n(0)$-modules are discussed, and the homological properties of $H_n(0)$ are computed for small $n$. Finally, the algebra of matrix quasi-symmetric functions is interpreted as a convolution algebra.

The Euclidean division of two formal series in one variable produces a sequence of series that we obtain explicitly, remarking that the case where one of the two initial series is 1 is sufficiently generic. As an application, we define a Wronskian of symmetric functions.

Using the Berele/Remmel/Kerov/Vershik variation of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence, we study the cycle and increasing subsequence structure after various methods of shuffling. One consequence is a cycle index for shuffles like: cut a deck into roughly two equal piles, thoroughly mix the first pile and then riffle it with the second pile. Conclusions are drawn concerning the distribution of fixed points and the asymptotic distribution of cycle structure. An upper bound on the convergence rate is given. Connections are made with extended Schur functions and with work of Baik and Rains.
Symmetric function generalizations of graph polynomials
In Chapter 2 we study the path-cycle symmetric function of a digraph, a symmetric function generalization of Chung and Graham's cover polynomial. Most of this material appears in either Advances in Math. 118 (1996), 71-98 or J. Algebraic Combin. 10 (1999), 227-240. Chapter 3 contains miscellaneous results about Stanley's symmetric function generalization X_G of the chromatic polynomial, e.g., we establish a connection with some of Tutte's work on the chromatic polynomial and use this to prove that X_G is reconstructible. Most of Chapter 3 does not appear elsewhere.

Using symmetric function theory, we study the cycle structure and increasing subsequence structure of permutations after various shuffling methods, emphasizing the role of Cauchy type identities and the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence. One consequence is a cycle index for riffle shuffles when one deals from the bottom of the deck; conclusions are drawn concerning the distribution of fixed points and the asymptotic distribution of cycle structure. In studying cycle structure of unimodal permutations and their generalizations we are led to an interesting variation of the RSK correspondence. This yields a probabilistic interpretation of a Schur-type function.

By algebraic group theory, there is a map from the semisimple conjugacy classes of a finite group of Lie type to the conjugacy classes of the Weyl group. Picking a semisimple class uniformly at random yields a probability measure on conjugacy classes of the Weyl group. Using the Brauer complex, it is proved that this measure agrees with a second measure on conjugacy classes of the Weyl group induced by a construction of Cellini using the affine Weyl group. Formulas for Cellini's measure in type $A$ are found. This leads to new models of card shuffling and has interesting combinatorial and number theoretic consequences. An analysis of type C gives another solution to a problem of Rogers in dynamical systems: the enumeration of unimodal permutations by cycle structure. The proof uses the factorization theory of palindromic polynomials over finite fields. Contact is made with symmetric function theory.

Let R and S be two irreducible root systems spanning the same vector space and having the same Weyl group W, such that S (but not necessarily R) is reduced. For each such pair (R,S) we construct a family of W-invariant orthogonal polynomials in several variables, whose coefficients are rational functions of parameters $q,t_1,t_2,...,t_r$, where r (=1,2 or 3) is the number of W-orbits in R. For particular values of these parameters, these polynomials give the values of zonal spherical functions on real and p-adic symmetric spaces. Also when R=S is of type $A_n$, they conincide with the symmetric polynomials described in I. G.
