Embeddings of Schur functions into types B/C/D
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the problem of embedding the semi-ring of Schur-positive symmetric polynomials into its analogue for the classical types $B/C/D$. If we preserve highest weights and add the additional Lie-theoretic parity assumption that the weights in images of Schur functions lie in a single translate of the root lattice, there are exactly two solutions. These naturally extend the Kirillov--Reshetikhin decompositions of representations of symplectic and orthogonal quantum affine algebras $U_q(\hat{g})$ (some still conjectural, some recently proven).

Finite Affine Groups: Cycle Indices, Hall-Littlewood Polynomials, and Probabilistic Algorithms
Published • View PublicationBIB
The asymptotic study of the conjugacy classes of a random element of the finite affine group leads one to define a probability measure on the set of all partitions of all positive integers. Four different probabilistic understandings of this measure are given--three using symmetric function theory and one using Markov chains. This leads to non-trivial enumerative results. Cycle index generating functions are derived and are used to compute the large dimension limiting probabilities that an element of the affine group is separable, cyclic, or semisimple and to study the convergence to these limits. This yields the first examples of such computations for a maximal parabolic subgroup of a finite classical group.

q-Analogs of symmetric function operators
Published • View PublicationBIB
For any homomorphism V on the space of symmetric functions, we introduce an operation which creates a q-analog of V. By giving several examples we demonstrate that this quantization occurs naturally within the theory of symmetric functions. In particular, we show that the Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions are formed by taking this q-analog of the Schur symmetric functions and the Macdonald symmetric functions appear by taking the q-analog of the Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions in the parameter t. This relation is then used to derive recurrences on the Macdonald q,t-Kostka coefficients.

Ribbon Operators and Hall-Littlewood Symmetric Functions
Published in Advances in Mathematics, 156, No. 1 (2000), pp.33-43 • View PublicationBIB
Given a partition $\la = (\la_1, \la_2, ... \la_k)$, let $\la^{rc} = (\la_2-1, \la_3-1, ... \la_k-1)$. It is easily seen that the diagram $\la\slash \la^{rc}$ is connected and has no $2 \times 2$ subdiagrams which we shall refer to as a ribbon. To each ribbon $R$, we associate a symmetric function operator $S^R$. We may define the major index of a ribbon $maj(R)$ to be the major index of any permutation that fits the ribbon. This paper is concerned with the operator $H_{1^k}^q = \sum_R q^{maj(R)} S^R$ where the sum is over all $2^{k-1}$ ribbons of size $k$. We show here that $H_{1^k}^q$ has truly remarkable properties, in particular that it is a Rodriguez operator that adds a column to the Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions. We believe that some of the tools we introduce here to prove our results should also be of independent interest and may be useful to establish further symmetric function identities.

Tableau atoms and a new Macdonald positivity conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $Λ$ be the space of symmetric functions and $V_k$ be the subspace spanned by the modified Schur functions $\{S_λ[X/(1-t)]\}_{λ_1\leq k}$. We introduce a new family of symmetric polynomials, $\{A_λ^{(k)}[X;t]\}_{λ_1\leq k}$, constructed from sums of tableaux using the charge statistic. We conjecture that the polynomials $A_λ^{(k)}[X;t]$ form a basis for $V_k$ and that the Macdonald polynomials indexed by partitions whose first part is not larger than $k$ expand positively in terms of our polynomials. A proof of this conjecture would not only imply the Macdonald positivity conjecture, but would substantially refine it. Our construction of the $A_λ^{(k)}[X;t]$ relies on the use of tableaux combinatorics and yields various properties and conjectures on the nature of these polynomials. Another important development following from our investigation is that the $A_λ^{(k)}[X;t]$ seem to play the same role for $V_k$ as the Schur functions do for $Λ$. In particular, this has led us to the discovery of many generalizations of properties held by the Schur functions, such as Pieri and Littlewood-Richardson type coefficients.
Vicious walkers, friendly walkers and Young tableaux II: With a wall
Published in J.Phys.A33:8835-8866,2000 • View PublicationBIB
We derive new results for the number of star and watermelon configurations of vicious walkers in the presence of an impenetrable wall by showing that these follow from standard results in the theory of Young tableaux, and combinatorial descriptions of symmetric functions. For the problem of $n$-friendly walkers, we derive exact asymptotics for the number of stars and watermelons both in the absence of a wall and in the presence of a wall.

A Littlewood-Richardson rule for the K-theory of Grassmannians
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove an explicit combinatorial formula for the structure constants of the Grothendieck ring of a Grassmann variety with respect to its basis of Schubert structure sheaves. We furthermore relate K-theory of Grassmannians to a bialgebra of stable Grothendieck polynomials, which is a K-theory parallel of the ring of symmetric functions.

Generalisation de formules de type Waring
We evaluate the symmetric functions $e_k$, $h_k$ and $p_k$ on the alphabet $\{x_r/(1-tx_r)\}$ by elementary methods and give the related generating functions. Our formulas lead to a new and short proof of an ex-conjecture of Lassalle, which was proved by Lascoux and Lassalle in the framework of $λ$-rings theory.

Une q - spécialisation pour les fonctions symétriques monomiales
Published in Advances in Math., 162 (2001), 217-242 • View PublicationBIB
We obtain the specialization of monomial symmetric functions on the alphabet (a-b)/(1-q). This gives a remarkable algebraic identity, and four new developments for the Macdonald polynomial associated with a row. The proofs are given in the framework of $λ$-ring theory.

Random matrix theory over finite fields: a survey
Published • View PublicationBIB
First we survey generating function methods for obtaining useful probability estimates about random matrices in the finite classical groups. Then we describe a probabilistic picture of conjugacy classes which is coherent and beautiful. Connections are made with symmetric function theory, Markov chains, potential theory, Rogers-Ramanujan type identities, quivers, and various measures on partitions.
Frobenius-Schur functions: summary of results
We introduce and study a family of inhomogeneous symmetric functions which we call the Frobenius-Schur functions. These functions are indexed by partitions and differ from the conventional Schur functions in lower terms only. Our interest in these new functions comes from the fact that they provide an explicit expression for the dimension of a skew Young diagram in terms of the Frobenius coordinates. This is important for the asymptotic theory of the characters of the symmetric groups. Our main result is a surprisingly simple determinantal expression of the Frobenius-Schur functions in terms of the conventional Schur functions. Other results include certain generating series, the Giambelli formula, vanishing properties and interpolation, a combinatorial formula (representation in terms of tableaux), and a Sergeev-Pragacz-type formula. Actually, we deal with a wider class of inhomogeneous symmetric functions which we call multiparameter Schur functions. These functions depend on an arbitrary doubly infinite sequence of parameters and interpolate between the Frobenius--Schur functions and the conventional Schur functions. This paper contains the statements of the results and the main formulas. Proofs will be given in an expanded version of the paper which will be posted in the arXiv.
Non-commutative Pieri operators on posets
Published in J. Combin. Th. Ser. A, Vol. 91, No. 1/2, Aug 2000, pp. 84-110 • View PublicationBIB
We consider graded representations of the algebra NC of noncommutative symmetric functions on the Z-linear span of a graded poset P. The matrix coefficients of such a representation give a Hopf morphism from a Hopf algebra HP generated by the intervals of P to the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions. This provides a unified construction of quasi-symmetric generating functions from different branches of algebraic combinatorics, and this construction is useful for transferring techniques and ideas between these branches. In particular we show that the (Hopf) algebra of Billera and Liu related to Eulerian posets is dual to the peak (Hopf) algebra of Stembridge related to enriched P-partitions, and connect this to the combinatorics of the Schubert calculus for isotropic flag manifolds.

Hall-Littlewood vertex operators and generalized Kostka polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
A family of vertex operators that generalizes those given by Jing for the Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions is presented. These operators produce symmetric functions related to the Poincare polynomials referred to as generalized Kostka polynomials in the same way that Jing's operator produces symmetric functions related to Kostka-Foulkes polynomials. These operators are then used to derive commutation relations and new relations involving the generalized Kostka coefficients. Such relations may be interpreted as identities in the (GL(n) x C^*)-equivariant K-theory of the nullcone.

Harmonic functions on multiplicative graphs and interpolation polynomials
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 7 (2000), paper R28 • View PublicationBIB
We construct examples of nonnegative harmonic functions on certain graded graphs: the Young lattice and its generalizations. Such functions first emerged in harmonic analysis on the infinite symmetric group. Our method relies on multivariate interpolation polynomials associated with Schur's S and P functions and with Jack symmetric functions. As a by-product, we compute certain Selberg-type integrals.

Stanley symmetric functions and quiver varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
In our joint paper with W. Fulton (math.AG/9804041) we prove a formula for the cohomology class of a quiver variety. This formula is general enough to give new expressions for all known types of Schubert polynomials. In the present paper we discuss the relationship between this formula and Stanley symmetric functions. We show that the coefficients obtained when a Stanley symmetric function is expressed in the basis of Schur functions are special cases of a class of generalized Littlewood-Richardson coefficients appearing in the formula for quiver varieties. We also prove that Fulton's universal Schubert polynomials (math.AG/9702012) satisfy the usual rule for a Schubert polynomial of a product of two permutations.

Hecke Algebra Actions on the Coinvariant Algebra
Published • View PublicationBIB
Two actions of the Hecke algebra of type A on the corresponding polynomial ring are studied. Both are deformations of the natural action of the symmetric group on polynomials, and keep symmetric functions invariant. We give an explicit description of these actions, and deduce a combinatorial formula for the resulting graded characters on the coinvariant algebra.

A Noncommutative Chromatic Symmetric Function
Published • View PublicationBIB
Stanley associated with a graph G a symmetric function X_G which reduces to G's chromatic polynomial under a certain specialization of variables. He then proved various theorems generalizing results about the chromatic polynomial, as well as new ones that cannot be interpreted at that level. Unfortunately, X_G does not satisfy a Deletion-Contraction Law which makes it difficult to apply induction. We introduce a symmetric function in noncommuting variables which does have such a law and specializes to X_G when the variables are allowed to commute. This permits us to further generalize some of Stanley's theorems and prove them in a uniform and straightforward manner. Furthermore, we make some progress on the (3+1)-free Conjecture of Stanley and Stembridge.

The eigenvalue spacing of a random unipotent matrix in its action on lines
Published • View PublicationBIB
The eigenvalue spacing of a uniformly chosen random finite unipotent matrix in its permutation action on lines is studied. We obtain bounds for the mean number of eigenvalues lying in a fixed arc of the unit circle and offer an approach toward other asymptotics. For the case of all unipotent matrices, the proof gives a probabilistic interpretation to identities of Macdonald from symmetric function theory. For the case of upper triangular matrices over a finite field, connections between symmetric function theory and a probabilistic growth algorithm of Borodin emerge..
