We show that the weights on a tropical variety can be recovered from the tropical scheme structure proposed by the Giansiracusas in arXiv:1308.0042, so there is a well-defined Hilbert-Chow morphism from a tropical scheme to the underlying tropical cycle. For a subscheme of projective space given by a homogeneous ideal I we show that this tropical scheme structure contains the same information as the set of valuated matroids of the vector spaces I_d for d \geq 0. We also give a combinatorial criterion to determine whether a given relation is in the congruence defining the tropical scheme structure.

We demonstrate that certain Johnson-type bounds are asymptotically exact for a variety of classes of codes, namely, constant-composition codes, nonbinary constant-weight codes and multiply constant-weight codes. This was achieved via an interesting application of the theory of decomposition of edge-colored digraphs.

We introduce a mutation algorithm for puzzles that is a three-direction analogue of the classical jeu de taquin algorithm for semistandard tableaux. We apply this algorithm to prove our conjectured puzzle formula for the equivariant Schubert structure constants of two-step flag varieties. This formula gives an expression for the structure constants that is positive in the sense of Graham. Thanks to the equivariant version of the `quantum equals classical' result, our formula specializes to a Littlewood-Richardson rule for the equivariant quantum cohomology of Grassmannians.

We study the torus equivariant Schubert classes of the Grassmannian of non-maximal isotropic subspaces in a symplectic vector space. We prove a formula that expresses each of those classes as a sum of multi Schur-Pfaffians, whose entries are equivariantly modified special Schubert classes. Our result gives a proof to Wilson's conjectural formula, which generalizes the Giambelli formula for the ordinary cohomology proved by Buch-Kresch-Tamvakis, given in terms of Young's raising operators. Furthermore we show that the formula extends to a certain family of Schubert classes of the symplectic partial isotropic flag varieties.

We prove a conjecture of Knutson asserting that the Schubert structure constants of the cohomology ring of a two-step flag variety are equal to the number of puzzles with specified border labels that can be created using a list of eight puzzle pieces. As a consequence, we obtain a puzzle formula for the Gromov-Witten invariants defining the small quantum cohomology ring of a Grassmann variety of type A. The proof of the conjecture proceeds by showing that the puzzle formula defines an associative product on the cohomology ring of the two-step flag variety. It is based on an explicit bijection of gashed puzzles that is analogous to the jeu de taquin algorithm but more complicated.
The Milnor fibration of a hyperplane arrangement: from modular resonance to algebraic monodromy

A central question in arrangement theory is to determine whether the characteristic polynomial $Δ_q$ of the algebraic monodromy acting on the homology group $H_q(F(\mathcal{A}),\mathbb{C})$ of the Milnor fiber of a complex hyperplane arrangement $\mathcal{A}$ is determined by the intersection lattice $L(\mathcal{A})$. Under simple combinatorial conditions, we show that the multiplicities of the factors of $Δ_1$ corresponding to certain eigenvalues of order a power of a prime $p$ are equal to the Aomoto--Betti numbers $β_p(\mathcal{A})$, which in turn are extracted from $L(\mathcal{A})$. When $\mathcal{A}$ defines an arrangement of projective lines with only double and triple points, this leads to a combinatorial formula for the algebraic monodromy. To obtain these results, we relate nets on the underlying matroid of $\mathcal{A}$ to resonance varieties in positive characteristic. Using modular invariants of nets, we find a new realizability obstruction (over $\mathbb{C}$) for matroids, and we estimate the number of essential components in the first complex resonance variety of $\mathcal{A}$. Our approach also reveals a rather unexpected connection of modular resonance with the geometry of ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{C})$-representation varieties, which are governed by the Maurer--Cartan equation.

We show that an element $w$ of a finite Weyl group $W$ is rationally smooth if and only if the hyperplane arrangement $I$ associated to the inversion set of $w$ is inductively free, and the product $(d_1+1) \cdots (d_l+1)$ of the coexponents $d_1,\ldots,d_l$ is equal to the size of the Bruhat interval $[e,w]$, where $e$ is the identity in $W$. As part of the proof, we describe exactly when a rationally smooth element in a finite Weyl group has a chain Billey-Postnikov decomposition. For finite Coxeter groups, we show that chain Billey-Postnikov decompositions are connected with certain modular coatoms of $I$.
Algebraic matroids with graph symmetry
This paper studies the properties of two kinds of matroids: (a) algebraic matroids and (b) finite and infinite matroids whose ground set have some canonical symmetry, for example row and column symmetry and transposition symmetry.
For (a) algebraic matroids, we expose cryptomorphisms making them accessible to techniques from commutative algebra. This allows us to introduce for each circuit in an algebraic matroid an invariant called circuit polynomial, generalizing the minimal poly- nomial in classical Galois theory, and studying the matroid structure with multivariate methods.
For (b) matroids with symmetries we introduce combinatorial invariants capturing structural properties of the rank function and its limit behavior, and obtain proofs which are purely combinatorial and do not assume algebraicity of the matroid; these imply and generalize known results in some specific cases where the matroid is also algebraic. These results are motivated by, and readily applicable to framework rigidity, low-rank matrix completion and determinantal varieties, which lie in the intersection of (a) and (b) where additional results can be derived. We study the corresponding matroids and their associated invariants, and for selected cases, we characterize the matroidal structure and the circuit polynomials completely.

The Weil sum $W_{K,d}(a)=\sum_{x \in K} ψ(x^d + a x)$ where $K$ is a finite field, $ψ$ is an additive character of $K$, $d$ is coprime to $|K^\times|$, and $a \in K^\times$ arises often in number-theoretic calculations, and in applications to finite geometry, cryptography, digital sequence design, and coding theory. Researchers are especially interested in the case where $W_{K,d}(a)$ assumes three distinct values as $a$ runs through $K^\times$. A Galois-theoretic approach, combined with $p$-divisibility results on Gauss sums, is used here to prove a variety of new results that constrain which fields $K$ and exponents $d$ support three-valued Weil sums, and restrict the values that such Weil sums may assume.

The Chen groups of a group $G$ are the lower central series quotients of the maximal metabelian quotient of $G$. Under certain conditions, we relate the ranks of the Chen groups to the first resonance variety of $G$, a jump locus for the cohomology of $G$. In the case where $G$ is the fundamental group of the complement of a complex hyperplane arrangement, our results positively resolve Suciu's Chen ranks conjecture. We obtain explicit formulas for the Chen ranks of a number of groups of broad interest, including pure Artin groups associated to Coxeter groups, and the group of basis-conjugating automorphisms of a finitely generated free group.

A projected Gromov-Witten variety is the union of all rational curves of fixed degree that meet two opposite Schubert varieties in a homogeneous space X = G/P. When X is cominuscule we prove that the map from a related Gromov-Witten variety is cohomologically trivial. This implies that all (3 point, genus zero) K-theoretic Gromov-Witten invariants of X are determined by the projected Gromov-Witten varieties, which extends an earlier result of Knutson, Lam, and Speyer. Our proof uses that any projected Gromov-Witten variety in a cominuscule space is also a projected Richardson variety.
Symmetry-forced rigidity of frameworks on surfaces

A fundamental theorem of Laman characterises when a bar-joint framework realised generically in the Euclidean plane admits a non-trivial continuous deformation of its vertices. This has recently been extended in two ways. Firstly to frameworks that are symmetric with respect to some point group but are otherwise generic, and secondly to frameworks in Euclidean 3-space that are constrained to lie on 2-dimensional algebraic varieties.
We combine these two settings and consider the rigidity of symmetric frameworks realised on such surfaces. By extending the orbit matrix techniques of [32, 12], we prove necessary conditions for a framework to be symmetry-forced rigid (i.e., to have no non-trivial symmetry-preserving motion) for any group and any surface. In the cases when the surface is a sphere, a cylinder or a cone we use Henneberg-type inductive constructions on group-labeled quotient graphs to prove that these conditions are also sufficient for a number of symmetry groups, including rotation, reflection, inversion and dihedral symmetry. For the remaining groups - as well as for other types of surfaces - we provide some observations and conjectures.

The nonelliptic $\mathsf{A_2}$-webs with $k$ "$+$"s on the top boundary and $3n-2k$ "$-$"s on the bottom boundary combinatorially model the space $\mathsf{Hom}_{\mathfrak{sl}_3}(\mathsf{V}^{\otimes (3n-2k)}, \mathsf{V}^{\otimes k})$ of $\mathfrak{sl}_3$-module maps on tensor powers of the natural $3$-dimensional $\mathfrak{sl}_3$-module $\mathsf{V}$, and they have connections with the combinatorics of Springer varieties. Petersen, Pylyavskyy, and Rhodes showed that the set of such $\mathsf{A_2}$-webs and the set of semistandard tableaux of shape $(3^n)$ and type $\{1^2,\dots,k^2,k+1,\dots, 3n-k\}$ have the same cardinalities. In this work, we use the $\sf{m}$-diagrams introduced by Tymoczko and the Robinson-Schensted correspondence to construct an explicit bijection, different from the one given by Russell, between these two sets. In establishing our result, we show that the pair of standard tableaux constructed using the notion of path depth is the same as the pair constructed from applying the Robinson-Schensted correspondence to a $3\,2\,1$-avoiding permutation. We also obtain a bijection between such pairs of standard tableaux and Westbury's $\mathsf{A_2}$ flow diagrams.
Tropical Grassmannian and Tropical Linear Varieties from phylogenetic trees
In this paper we study tropicalization of Grassmannian and linear varieties. In particular, we study the tropical linear spaces cor- responding to the phylogenetic trees. We prove that corresponding to each subtree of the phylogenetic tree there is a point on the tropical grassmannian. We deduce a necessary and sufficient condition for it to be on the facet of the tropical linear space.
On the number of non-comparable pairs of elements in a distributive lattice
In this article we introduce the study of the number of pairs of non-comparable elements in a distributive lattice $Ł$. We give several tight lower and upper bounds for the number and give as an application the lattices precisely for which the algebraic variety associated to is a complete intersection.
On singularities of lattice varieties
Toric varieties associated with distributive lattices arise as a fibre of a flat degeneration of a Schubert variety in a minuscule. The singular locus of these varieties has been studied by various authors. In this article we prove that the number of diamonds incident on a lattice point $\a$ in a product of chain lattices is more than or equal to the codimension of the lattice. Using this we also show that the lattice varieties associated with product of chain lattices is smooth.

Using combinatorial properties of symmetric polynomials, we compute explicitly the Soergel modules for some permutations whose corresponding Schubert varieties are rationally smooth. We build from them diagram algebras whose module categories are equivalent to the subquotient categories of the BGG category $\mathcal{O}(\mathfrak{gl}_n)$ which show up in categorification of $\mathfrak{gl}(1|1)$-representations. We construct diagrammatically the graded cellular structure and the properly stratified structure of these algebras.
Deciding first-order properties of nowhere dense graphs

Nowhere dense graph classes, introduced by Nesetril and Ossona de Mendez, form a large variety of classes of "sparse graphs" including the class of planar graphs, actually all classes with excluded minors, and also bounded degree graphs and graph classes of bounded expansion.
We show that deciding properties of graphs definable in first-order logic is fixed-parameter tractable on nowhere dense graph classes. At least for graph classes closed under taking subgraphs, this result is optimal: it was known before that for all classes C of graphs closed under taking subgraphs, if deciding first-order properties of graphs in C is fixed-parameter tractable, then C must be nowhere dense (under a reasonable complexity theoretic assumption).
As a by-product, we give an algorithmic construction of sparse neighbourhood covers for nowhere dense graphs. This extends and improves previous constructions of neighbourhood covers for graph classes with excluded minors. At the same time, our construction is considerably simpler than those. Our proofs are based on a new game-theoretic characterisation of nowhere dense graphs that allows for a recursive version of locality-based algorithms on these classes. On the logical side, we prove a "rank-preserving" version of Gaifman's locality theorem.

A Peterson variety is a subvariety of the flag variety $G/B$ which appears in the construction of the quantum cohomology of partial flag varieties. Each Peterson variety has a one-dimensional torus $S^1$ acting on it. We give a basis of Peterson Schubert classes for $H_{S^1}^*(Pet)$ and identify the ring generators. In type $A$ Harada-Tymoczko gave a positive Monk formula, and Bayegan-Harada gave Giambelli's formula for multiplication in the cohomology ring. This paper gives Monk's rule and Giambelli's formula for all Lie types.
