Let the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ act on the polynomial ring $\mathbb{Q}[\mathbf{x}_n] = \mathbb{Q}[x_1, \dots, x_n]$ by variable permutation. The coinvariant algebra is the graded $\mathfrak{S}_n$-module $R_n := {\mathbb{Q}[\mathbf{x}_n]} / {I_n}$, where $I_n$ is the ideal in $\mathbb{Q}[\mathbf{x}_n]$ generated by invariant polynomials with vanishing constant term. Haglund, Rhoades, and Shimozono introduced a new quotient $R_{n,k}$ of the polynomial ring $\mathbb{Q}[\mathbf{x}_n]$ depending on two positive integers $k \leq n$ which reduces to the classical coinvariant algebra of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ when $k = n$. The quotient $R_{n,k}$ carries the structure of a graded $\mathfrak{S}_n$-module; Haglund et. al. determine its graded isomorphism type and relate it to the Delta Conjecture in the theory of Macdonald polynomials. We introduce and study a related quotient $S_{n,k}$ of $\mathbb{F}[\mathbf{x}_n]$ which carries a graded action of the 0-Hecke algebra $H_n(0)$, where $\mathbb{F}$ is an arbitrary field. We prove 0-Hecke analogs of the results of Haglund, Rhoades, and Shimozono. In the classical case $k = n$, we recover earlier results of Huang concerning the 0-Hecke action on the coinvariant algebra.

Given a semisimple complex linear algebraic group $G$ and a lower ideal $I$ in positive roots of $G$, three objects arise: the ideal arrangement $\mathcal{A}_I$, the regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety $\mbox{Hess}(N,I)$, and the regular semisimple Hessenberg variety $\mbox{Hess}(S,I)$. We show that a certain graded ring derived from the logarithmic derivation module of $\mathcal{A}_I$ is isomorphic to $H^*(\mbox{Hess}(N,I))$ and $H^*(\mbox{Hess}(S,I))^W$, the invariants in $H^*(\mbox{Hess}(S,I))$ under an action of the Weyl group $W$ of $G$. This isomorphism is shown for general Lie type, and generalizes Borel's celebrated theorem showing that the coinvariant algebra of $W$ is isomorphic to the cohomology ring of the flag variety $G/B$.
This surprising connection between Hessenberg varieties and hyperplane arrangements enables us to produce a number of interesting consequences. For instance, the surjectivity of the restriction map $H^*(G/B)\to H^*(\mbox{Hess}(N,I))$ announced by Dale Peterson and an affirmative answer to a conjecture of Sommers-Tymoczko are immediate consequences. We also give an explicit ring presentation of $H^*(\mbox{Hess}(N,I))$ in types $B$, $C$, and $G$. Such a presentation was already known in type $A$ or when $\mbox{Hess}(N,I)$ is the Peterson variety. Moreover, we find the volume polynomial of $\mbox{Hess}(N,I)$ and see that the hard Lefschetz property and the Hodge-Riemann relations hold for $\mbox{Hess}(N,I)$, despite the fact that it is a singular variety in general.

The symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ acts on the polynomial ring $\mathbb{Q}[\mathbf{x}_n] = \mathbb{Q}[x_1, \dots, x_n]$ by variable permutation. The invariant ideal $I_n$ is the ideal generated by all $\mathfrak{S}_n$-invariant polynomials with vanishing constant term. The quotient $R_n = \frac{\mathbb{Q}[\mathbf{x}_n]}{I_n}$ is called the coinvariant algebra. The coinvariant algebra $R_n$ has received a great deal of study in algebraic and geometric combinatorics. We introduce a generalization $I_{n,k} \subseteq \mathbb{Q}[\mathbf{x}_n]$ of the ideal $I_n$ indexed by two positive integers $k \leq n$. The corresponding quotient $R_{n,k} := \frac{\mathbb{Q}[\mathbf{x}_n]}{I_{n,k}}$ carries a graded action of $\mathfrak{S}_n$ and specializes to $R_n$ when $k = n$. We generalize many of the nice properties of $R_n$ to $R_{n,k}$. In particular, we describe the Hilbert series of $R_{n,k}$, give extensions of the Artin and Garsia-Stanton monomial bases of $R_n$ to $R_{n,k}$, determine the reduced Gröbner basis for $I_{n,k}$ with respect to the lexicographic monomial order, and describe the graded Frobenius series of $R_{n,k}$. Just as the combinatorics of $R_n$ are controlled by permutations in $\mathfrak{S}_n$, we will show that the combinatorics of $R_{n,k}$ are controlled by ordered set partitions of $\{1, 2, \dots, n\}$ with $k$ blocks. The {\em Delta Conjecture} of Haglund, Remmel, and Wilson is a generalization of the Shuffle Conjecture in the theory of diagonal coinvariants. We will show that the graded Frobenius series of $R_{n,k}$ is (up to a minor twist) the $t = 0$ specialization of the combinatorial side of the Delta Conjecture. It remains an open problem to give a bigraded $\mathfrak{S}_n$-module $V_{n,k}$ whose Frobenius image is even conjecturally equal to any of the expressions in the Delta Conjecture; our module $R_{n,k}$ solves this problem in the specialization $t = 0$.
A proof of the shuffle conjecture

We present a proof of the compositional shuffle conjecture, which generalizes the famous shuffle conjecture for the character of the diagonal coinvariant algebra. We first formulate the combinatorial side of the conjecture in terms of certain operators on a graded vector space $V_*$ whose degree zero part is the ring of symmetric functions $Sym[X]$ over $\mathbb{Q}(q,t)$. We then extend these operators to an action of an algebra $\tildeÅ$ acting on this space, and interpret the right generalization of the $\nabla$ using an involution of the algebra which is antilinear with respect to the conjugation $(q,t)\mapsto (q^{-1},t^{-1})$.

A general setting to study a certain type of formulas, expressing characters of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ explicitly in terms of descent sets of combinatorial objects, has been developed by two of the authors. This theory is further investigated in this paper and extended to the hyperoctahedral group $B_n$. Key ingredients are a new formula for the irreducible characters of $B_n$, the signed quasisymmetric functions introduced by Poirier, and a new family of matrices of Walsh--Hadamard type. Applications include formulas for natural $B_n$-actions on coinvariant and exterior algebras and on the top homology of a certain poset in terms of the combinatorics of various classes of signed permutations, as well as a $B_n$-analogue of an equidistribution theorem of Désarménien and Wachs.
An extension of Tamari lattices

For any finite path $v$ on the square grid consisting of north and east unit steps, starting at (0,0), we construct a poset Tam$(v)$ that consists of all the paths weakly above $v$ with the same number of north and east steps as $v$. For particular choices of $v$, we recover the traditional Tamari lattice and the $m$-Tamari lattice.
Let $\overleftarrow{v}$ be the path obtained from $v$ by reading the unit steps of $v$ in reverse order, replacing the east steps by north steps and vice versa. We show that the poset Tam$(v)$ is isomorphic to the dual of the poset Tam$(\overleftarrow{v})$. We do so by showing bijectively that the poset Tam$(v)$ is isomorphic to the poset based on rotation of full binary trees with the fixed canopy $v$, from which the duality follows easily. This also shows that Tam$(v)$ is a lattice for any path $v$. We also obtain as a corollary of this bijection that the usual Tamari lattice, based on Dyck paths of height $n$, is a partition of the (smaller) lattices Tam$(v)$, where the $v$ are all the paths on the square grid that consist of $n-1$ unit steps.
We explain possible connections between the poset Tam$(v)$ and (the combinatorics of) the generalized diagonal coinvariant spaces of the symmetric group.

We introduce a homological approach to exhibiting instances of Stembridge's q=-1 phenomenon. This approach is shown to explain two important instances of the phenomenon, namely that of partitions whose Ferrers diagrams fit in a rectangle of fixed size and that of plane partitions fitting in a box of fixed size. A more general framework of invariant and coinvariant complexes with coefficients taken mod 2 is developed, and as a part of this story an analogous homological result for necklaces is conjectured.

In this paper we develop machinery for studying sequences of representations of any of the three families of classical Weyl groups, extending work of Church, Ellenberg, Farb, and Nagpal on the symmetric groups S_n to the signed permutation groups B_n and the even-signed permutation groups D_n. For each family W_n, we present an algebraic framework where a sequence V_n of W_n-representations is encoded into a single object we call an FI_W-module. We prove that if an FI_W-module V satisfies a simple finite generation condition then the structure of the sequence is highly constrained. One consequence is that the sequence is uniformly representation stable in the sense of Church-Farb, that is, the pattern of irreducible representations in the decomposition of each V_n eventually stabilizes in a precise sense. Using the theory developed here we obtain new results about the cohomology of generalized flag varieties associated to the classical Weyl groups, and more generally the r-diagonal coinvariant algebras.
We analyze the algebraic structure of the category of FI_W-modules, and introduce restriction and induction operations that enable us to study interactions between the three families of groups. We use this theory to prove analogues of Murnaghan's 1938 stability theorem for Kronecker coefficients for the families B_n and D_n. The theory of FI_W-modules gives a conceptual framework for stability results such as these.

The 0-Hecke algebra $H_n(0)$ is a deformation of the group algebra of the symmetric group $\SS_n$. We show that its coinvariant algebra naturally carries the regular representation of $H_n(0)$, giving an analogue of the well-known result for $\SS_n$ by Chevalley-Shephard-Todd. By investigating the action of $H_n(0)$ on coinvariants and flag varieties, we interpret the generating functions counting the permutations with fixed inverse descent set by their inversion number and major index. We also study the action of $H_n(0)$ on the cohomology rings of the Springer fibers, and similarly interpret the (noncommutative) Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions indexed by hook shapes.

FI-modules were introduced by the first three authors in [CEF] to encode sequences of representations of symmetric groups. Over a field of characteristic 0, finite generation of an FI-module implies representation stability for the corresponding sequence of S_n-representations. In this paper we prove the Noetherian property for FI-modules over arbitrary Noetherian rings: any sub-FI-module of a finitely generated FI-module is finitely generated. This lets us extend many of the results of [CEF] to representations in positive characteristic, and even to integral coefficients. We focus on three major applications of the main theorem: on the integral and mod p cohomology of configuration spaces; on diagonal coinvariant algebras in positive characteristic; and on an integral version of Putman's central stability for homology of congruence subgroups.

The coinvariant algebra of a Weyl group plays a fundamental role in several areas of mathematics. The fake degrees are the graded multiplicities of the irreducible modules of a Weyl group in its coinvariant algebra, and they were computed by Steinberg, Lusztig and Beynon-Lusztig. In this paper we formulate a notion of spin coinvariant algebra for every Weyl group. Then we compute all the spin fake degrees for each classical Weyl group, which are by definition the graded multiplicities of the simple modules of a spin Weyl group in the spin coinvariant algebra. The spin fake degrees for the exceptional Weyl groups are given in a sequel.

In this paper we introduce and develop the theory of FI-modules. We apply this theory to obtain new theorems about:
- the cohomology of the configuration space of n distinct ordered points on an arbitrary (connected, oriented) manifold
- the diagonal coinvariant algebra on r sets of n variables
- the cohomology and tautological ring of the moduli space of n-pointed curves
- the space of polynomials on rank varieties of n x n matrices
- the subalgebra of the cohomology of the genus n Torelli group generated by H^1 and more.
The symmetric group S_n acts on each of these vector spaces. In most cases almost nothing is known about the characters of these representations, or even their dimensions. We prove that in each fixed degree the character is given, for n large enough, by a polynomial in the cycle-counting functions that is independent of n. In particular, the dimension is eventually a polynomial in n. In this framework, representation stability (in the sense of Church-Farb) for a sequence of S_n-representations is converted to a finite generation property for a single FI-module.

We calculate the Borel-Moore homology of affine Springer fibers of type $A$ associated to some regular semisimple nil elliptic elements. As a result, we obtain bigraded $\mf{S}_{n}$-modules whose bigraded Frobenius series are generalization of the symmetric functions introduced by Haglund, Haiman, Loehr, Remmel, and Ulyanov.
Combinatorics of r-Dyck paths, r-Parking functions, and the r-Tamari lattices
This paper's aim is to present recent combinatorial considerations on r-Dyck paths, r-Parking functions, and the r-Tamari lattices. Giving a better understanding of the combinatorics of these objects has become important in view of their (conjectural) role in the description of the graded character of the Sn-modules of bivariate and trivariate diagonal coinvariant spaces for the symmetric group.

An m-ballot path of size n is a path on the square grid consisting of north and east unit steps, starting at (0,0), ending at (mn,n), and never going below the line {x=my}. The set of these paths can be equipped with a lattice structure, called the m-Tamari lattice and denoted by T_n^{m}, which generalizes the usual Tamari lattice T_n obtained when m=1. This lattice was introduced by F. Bergeron in connection with the study of diagonal coinvariant spaces in three sets of n variables. The representation of the symmetric group S_n on these spaces is conjectured to be closely related to the natural representation of S_n on (labelled) intervals of the m-Tamari lattice, which we study in this paper. An interval [P,Q] of T_n^{m} is labelled if the north steps of Q are labelled from 1 to n in such a way the labels increase along any sequence of consecutive north steps. The symmetric group S_n acts on labelled intervals of T_n^{m} by permutation of the labels. We prove an explicit formula, conjectured by F. Bergeron and the third author, for the character of the associated representation of S_n. In particular, the dimension of the representation, that is, the number of labelled m-Tamari intervals of size n, is found to be (m+1)^n(mn+1)^{n-2}. These results are new, even when m=1. The form of these numbers suggests a connection with parking functions, but our proof is not bijective. The starting point is a recursive description of m-Tamari intervals. It yields an equation for an associated generating function, which is a refined version of the Frobenius series of the representation. This equation involves two additional variables x and y, a derivative with respect to y and iterated divided differences with respect to x. The hardest part of the proof consists in solving it, and we develop original techniques to do so, partly inspired by previous work on polynomial equations with "catalytic" variables.

The representation theory of the symmetric groups is intimately related to geometry, algebraic combinatorics, and Lie theory. The spin representation theory of the symmetric groups was originally developed by Schur. In these lecture notes, we present a coherent account of the spin counterparts of several classical constructions such as the Frobenius characteristic map, Schur duality, the coinvariant algebra, Kostka polynomials, and Young's seminormal form.
Tamari lattices and parking functions: proof of a conjecture of F. Bergeron
An m-ballot path of size n is a path on the square grid consisting of north and east unit steps, starting at (0,0), ending at (mn,n), and never going below the line {x=my. The set of these paths can be equipped with a lattice structure, called the m-Tamari lattice and denoted by T_n^(m), which generalizes the usual Tamari lattice T_n obtained when m=1. This lattice was introduced by F. Bergeron in connection with the study of coinvariant spaces. He conjectured several intriguing formulas dealing with the enumeration of intervals in this lattice. One of them states that the number of intervals in T_n^(m) is $$ \frac {m+1}{n(mn+1)} {(m+1)^2 n+m\choose n-1}. $$ This conjecture was proved recently, but in a non-bijective way, while its form strongly suggests a connection with plane trees. Here, we prove another conjecture of Bergeron, which deals with the number of labelled, intervals. An interval [P,Q] of T_n^(m) is labelled, if the north steps of Q are labelled from 1 to n in such a way the labels increase along any sequence of consecutive north steps. We prove that the number of labelled intervals in T_n^(m) is $$ {(m+1)^n(mn+1)^{n-2}}. $$ The form of these numbers suggests a connection with parking functions, but our proof is non-bijective. It is based on a recursive description of intervals, which translates into a functional equation satisfied by the associated generating function. This equation involves a derivative and a divided difference, taken with respect to two additional variables. Solving this equation is the hardest part of the paper. Finding a bijective proof remains an open problem.

Block character of a finite symmetric group S(n) is a positive definite function which depends only on the number of cycles in permutation. We describe the cone of block characters by identifying its extreme rays, and find relations of the characters to descent representations and the coinvariant algebra of S(n). The decomposition of extreme block characters into the sum of characters of irreducible representations gives rise to certain limit shape theorems for random Young diagrams. We also study counterparts of the block characters for the infinite symmetric group S(\infty) along with their connection to the Thoma characters of the infinite linear group GL(\infty,q) over a Galois field.
