Number of "udu" of a Dyck path and ad-nilpotent ideals of parabolic subalgebras of sl_{l+1}(C)
For an ad-nilpotent ideal $i$ of a Borel subalgebra of $sl_{l+1}(C)$, we denote by $I_i$ the maximal subset $I$ of the set of simple roots such that $i$ is an ad-nilpotent ideal of the standard parabolic subalgebra $p_I$. We use the bijection given by G.E. Andrews, C. Krattenthaler, L. Orsina and P. Papi between the set of ad-nilpotent ideals of a Borel subalgebra in $sl_{l+1}(C)$ and the set of Dyck paths of length $2l+2$, to explicit a bijection between ad-nilpotent ideals $i$ of the Borel subalgebra such that the cardinality of $I_i$ is equal to $r$ and the Dyck paths of length $2l+2$ having $r$ occurence "udu". We obtain also a duality between antichains of cardinality $p$ and $l-p$ in the set of positive roots.

Punctured plane partitions and the q-deformed Knizhnik--Zamolodchikov and Hirota equations
Published in J. Combin. Theory A 116 (2009), 772--794 • View PublicationBIB
We consider partial sum rules for the homogeneous limit of the solution of the q-deformed Knizhnik--Zamolodchikov equation with reflecting boundaries in the Dyck path representation. We show that these partial sums arise in a solution of the discrete Hirota equation, and prove that they are the generating functions of $τ^2$-weighted punctured cyclically symmetric transpose complement plane partitions where $τ=-(q+q^{-1})$. In the cases of no or minimal punctures, we prove that these generating functions coincide with $τ^2$-enumerations of vertically symmetric alternating sign matrices and modifications thereof.

Bijections from Dyck paths to 321-avoiding permutations revisited
There are (at least) three bijections from Dyck paths to 321-avoiding permutations in the literature, due to Billey-Jockusch-Stanley, Krattenthaler, and Mansour-Deng-Du. How different are they? Denoting them B,K,M respectively, we show that M = B \circ L = K \circ L' where L is the classical Kreweras-Lalanne involution on Dyck paths and L', also an involution, is a sort of derivative of L. Thus K^{-1} \circ B, a measure of the difference between B and K, is the product of involutions L' \circ L and turns out to be a very curious bijection: as a permutation on Dyck n-paths it is an nth root of the "reverse path" involution. The proof of this fact boils down to a geometric argument involving pairs of nonintersecting lattice paths.

Multivariate Fuss-Catalan numbers
Published in Discrete Mathematics 308 (2008) 4660-4669 • View PublicationBIB
Catalan numbers $C(n)=\frac{1}{n+1}{2n\choose n}$ enumerate binary trees and Dyck paths. The distribution of paths with respect to their number $k$ of factors is given by ballot numbers $B(n,k)=\frac{n-k}{n+k}{n+k\choose n}$. These integers are known to satisfy simple recurrence, which may be visualised in a ``Catalan triangle'', a lower-triangular two-dimensional array. It is surprising that the extension of this construction to 3 dimensions generates integers $B_3(n,k,l)$ that give a 2-parameter distribution of $C_3(n)=\frac 1 {2n+1} {3n\choose n}$, which may be called order-3 Fuss-Catalan numbers, and enumerate ternary trees. The aim of this paper is a study of these integers $B_3(n,k,l)$. We obtain an explicit formula and a description in terms of trees and paths. Finally, we extend our construction to $p$-dimensional arrays, and in this case we obtain a $(p-1)$-parameter distribution of $C_p(n)=\frac 1 {(p-1)n+1} {pn\choose n}$, the number of $p$-ary trees.

Pattern Avoiding Ballot Paths and Finite Operator Calculus
Published • View PublicationBIB
Counting pattern avoiding ballot paths begins with a careful analysis of the pattern. Not the length, but the characteristics of the pattern are responsible for the difficulties in finding explicit solutions. Certain features, like overlap and difference in number of right and up steps determine the solution of the recursion formula. If the recursion can be solved by a polynomial sequence, we apply the Finite Operator Calculus to find an explicit form of the solution in terms of binomial coefficients. Nested quantum Dyck paths and nabla(s_lambda)
Published • View PublicationBIB
We conjecture a combinatorial formula for the monomial expansion of the image of any Schur function under the Bergeron-Garsia nabla operator. The formula involves nested labeled Dyck paths weighted by area and a suitable "diagonal inversion" statistic. Our model includes as special cases many previous conjectures connecting the nabla operator to quantum lattice paths. The combinatorics of the inverse Kostka matrix leads to an elementary proof of our proposed formula when q=1. We also outline a possible approach for proving all the extant nabla conjectures that reduces everything to the construction of sign-reversing involutions on explicit collections of signed, weighted objects.

Euler Coefficients and Restricted Dyck Paths
We consider the problem of enumerating Dyck paths staying weakly above the x-axis with a limit to the number of consecutive up steps, or a limit to the number of consecutive down steps. We use Finite Operator Calculus to obtain formulas for the number of all such paths reaching a given point in the first quadrant. All our results are based on the Eulerian coefficients.

Catalan's intervals and realizers of triangulations
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory Series A 116, 1 (2009) 55-75 • View PublicationBIB
The Stanley lattice, Tamari lattice and Kreweras lattice are three remarkable orders defined on the set of Catalan objects of a given size. These lattices are ordered by inclusion: the Stanley lattice is an extension of the Tamari lattice which is an extension of the Kreweras lattice. The Stanley order can be defined on the set of Dyck paths of size $n$ as the relation of \emph{being above}. Hence, intervals in the Stanley lattice are pairs of non-crossing Dyck paths. In a former article, the second author defined a bijection $Φ$ between pairs of non-crossing Dyck paths and the realizers of triangulations (or Schnyder woods). We give a simpler description of the bijection $Φ$. Then, we study the restriction of $Φ$ to Tamari's and Kreweras' intervals. We prove that $Φ$ induces a bijection between Tamari intervals and minimal realizers. This gives a bijection between Tamari intervals and triangulations. We also prove that $Φ$ induces a bijection between Kreweras intervals and the (unique) realizers of stack triangulations. Thus, $Φ$ induces a bijection between Kreweras intervals and stack triangulations which are known to be in bijection with ternary trees.

Parametric production matrices and weighted succession rules: a Dyck path example
We introduce weighted succession rules and parametric production matrices - simple extensions of the standard ECO method succession rules and production matrices. The purpose is to enumerate combinatorial objects with respect to several variables. We consider one main example, from the theory of Dyck paths. The path statistics primarily considered are peak height, rise height, and certain subwalks. Many classical sequences (such as the Catalan, Motzkin, Narayana and Schroeder numbers) are incorporated in this example.

Dyck paths with coloured ascents
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a notion of Dyck paths with coloured ascents. For several ways of colouring, we establish bijections between sets of such paths and other combinatorial structures, such as non-crossing trees, dissections of a convex polygon, etc. In some cases enumeration gives new expression for sequences enumerating these structures.

Discrete excursions
Published in Seminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire 57 (2008) 23 pp • Search Publication
It is well-known that the length generating function E(t) of Dyck paths (excursions with steps +1 and -1) satisfies 1-E+t^2E^2=0. The generating function E^(k)(t) of Dyck paths of height at most k is E^(k)=F_k/F_{k+1}, where the F_k are polynomials in t given by F_0=F_1=1 and F_{k+1}= F_k-t^2F_{k-1}. This means that the generating function of these polynomials is \sum_{k\ge 0} F_k z^k= 1/(1-z+t^2z^2). We note that the denominator of this fraction is the minimal polynomial of the algebraic series E(t). This pattern persists for walks with more general steps. For any finite set of steps S, the generating function E^(k)(t) of excursions (generalized Dyck paths) taking their steps in S and of height at most k is the ratio F_k/F_{k+1} of two polynomials. These polynomials satisfy a linear recurrence relation with coefficients in Q[t]. Their (rational) generating function can be written \sum_{k\ge 0} F_k z^k= N(t,z)/D(t,z). The excursion generating function E(t) is algebraic and satisfies D(t,E(t))=0 (while N(t,E(t))\not = 0). If max S=a and min S=b, the polynomials D(t,z) and N(t,z) can be taken to be respectively of degree d_{a,b}=binomial(a+b,a) and d_{a,b}-a-b in z. These degrees are in general optimal: for instance, when S={a,-b} with a and b coprime, D(t,z) is irreducible, and is thus the minimal polynomial of the excursion generating function E(t). The proofs of these results involve a slightly unusual mixture of combinatorial and algebraic tools, among which the kernel method (which solves certain functional equations), symmetric functions, and a pinch of Galois theory.

An exhaustive generation algorithm for Catalan objects and others
In this paper we present a CAT generation algorithm for Dyck paths with a fixed length n. It is the formalization of a method for the exhaustive generation of this kind of paths which can be described by means of two equivalent strategies. The former is described by a rooted tree, the latter lists the paths by means of three operations which, as we are going to see, are equivalent to visit the tree. These constructions are strictly connected with ECO method and can be encoded by a rule, very similar to the succession rule in ECO, with a finite number of labels for each n. Moreover with a slight variation this method can be generalized to other combinatorial classes like Grand Dyck or Motzkin paths.

A bijection on Dyck paths and its cycle structure
Published • View PublicationBIB
The known bijections on Dyck paths are either involutions or have notoriously intractable cycle structure. Here we present a size-preserving bijection on Dyck paths whose cycle structure is amenable to complete analysis. In particular, each cycle has length a power of 2. A new manifestation of the Catalan numbers as labeled forests crops up enroute as does the Pascal matrix mod 2. We use the bijection to show the equivalence of two known manifestations of the Motzkin numbers. Finally, we consider some statistics on the new Catalan manifestation.
Restricted Dumont permutations, Dyck paths, and noncrossing partitions

We complete the enumeration of Dumont permutations of the second kind avoiding a pattern of length 4 which is itself a Dumont permutation of the second kind. We also consider some combinatorial statistics on Dumont permutations avoiding certain patterns of length 3 and 4 and give a natural bijection between 3142-avoiding Dumont permutations of the second kind and noncrossing partitions that uses cycle decomposition, as well as bijections between 132-, 231- and 321-avoiding Dumont permutations and Dyck paths. Finally, we enumerate Dumont permutations of the first kind simultaneously avoiding certain pairs of 4-letter patterns and another pattern of arbitrary length.

A bijection between 2-triangulations and pairs of non-crossing Dyck paths
Published • View PublicationBIB
A k-triangulation of a convex polygon is a maximal set of diagonals so that no k+1 of them mutually cross in their interiors. We present a bijection between 2-triangulations of a convex n-gon and pairs of non-crossing Dyck paths of length 2(n-4). This solves the problem of finding a bijective proof of a result of Jonsson for the case k=2. We obtain the bijection by constructing isomorphic generating trees for the sets of 2-triangulations and pairs of non-crossing Dyck paths.

Cuntz-Krieger algebras and a generalization of Catalan numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
We first observe that the relations of the canonical generating isometries of the Cuntz algebra ${\cal O}_N$ are naturally related to the $N$-colored Catalan numbers. For a directed graph $G$, we generalize the Catalan numbers by using the canonical generating partial isometries of the Cuntz-Krieger algebra ${\cal O}_{A^G}$ for the transition matrix $A^G$ of $G$. The generalized Catalan numbers $c_n^G, n=0,1,2,...$ enumerate the number of Dyck paths and oriented rooted trees for the graph $G$. Its generating functions will be studied.

Asymptotics of the average height of 2--watermelons with a wall

We generalize the classical work of de Bruijn, Knuth and Rice (giving the asymptotics of the average height of Dyck paths of length $n$) to the case of $p$--watermelons with a wall (i.e., to a certain family of $p$ nonintersecting Dyck paths; simple Dyck paths being the special case $p=1$.) We work out this asymptotics for the case $p=2$ only, since the computations involved are already quite complicated (but might be of some interest in their own right).

What power of two divides a weighted Catalan number?
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a sequence of integers b = (b_0,b_1,b_2,...) one gives a Dyck path P of length 2n the weight wt(P) = b_{h_1} b_{h_2} ... b_{h_n}, where h_i is the height of the ith ascent of P. The corresponding weighted Catalan number is C_n^b = sum_P wt(P), where the sum is over all Dyck paths of length 2n. So, in particular, the ordinary Catalan numbers C_n correspond to b_i = 1 for all i >= 0. Let xi(n) stand for the base two exponent of n, i.e., the largest power of 2 dividing n. We give a condition on b which implies that xi(C_n^b) = xi(C_n). In the special case b_i=(2i+1)^2, this settles a conjecture of Postnikov about the number of plane Morse links. Our proof generalizes the recent combinatorial proof of Deutsch and Sagan of the classical formula for xi(C_n).
The Butterfly Decomposition of Plane Trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the notion of doubly rooted plane trees and give a decomposition of these trees, called the butterfly decomposition which turns out to have many applications. From the butterfly decomposition we obtain a one-to-one correspondence between doubly rooted plane trees and free Dyck paths, which implies a simple derivation of a relation between the Catalan numbers and the central binomial coefficients. We also establish a one-to-one correspondence between leaf-colored doubly rooted plane trees and free Schröder paths. The classical Chung-Feller theorem on free Dyck paths and some generalizations and variations with respect to Dyck paths and Schröder paths with flaws turn out to be immediate consequences of the butterfly decomposition and the preorder traversal of plane trees. We obtain two involutions on free Dyck paths and free Schröder paths, leading to two combinatorial identities. We also use the butterfly decomposition to give a combinatorial treatment of the generating function for the number of chains in plane trees due to Klazar. We further study the average size of chains in plane trees with $n$ edges and show that this number asymptotically tends to ${n+9 \over 6}$.
