We give explicit presentations of the integral equivariant cohomology of the affine Grassmannians and flag varieties in type A, arising from their natural embeddings in the corresponding infinite (Sato) Grassmannian and flag variety. These presentations are compared with results obtained by Lam and Shimozono, for rational equivariant cohomology of the affine Grassmannian, and by Larson, for the integral cohomology of the moduli stack of vector bundles on $\mathbb{P}^1$.
A presentation of the torus-equivariant quantum $K$-theory ring of flag manifolds of type $A$, Part II: quantum double Grothendieck polynomials
In our previous paper, we gave a presentation of the torus-equivariant quantum $K$-theory ring $QK_{H}(Fl_{n+1})$ of the (full) flag manifold $Fl_{n+1}$ of type $A_{n}$ as a quotient of a polynomial ring by an explicit ideal. In this paper, we prove that quantum double Grothendieck polynomials, introduced by Lenart-Maeno, represent the corresponding (opposite) Schubert classes in the quantum $K$-theory ring $QK_{H}(Fl_{n+1})$ under this presentation. The main ingredient in our proof is an explicit formula expressing the semi-infinite Schubert class associated to the longest element of the finite Weyl group, which is proved by making use of the general Chevalley formula for the torus-equivariant $K$-group of the semi-infinite flag manifold associated to $SL_{n+1}(\mathbb{C})$.
$h$-vector inequalities under weak maps
We study the behavior of $h$-vectors associated to matroid complexes under weak maps, or inclusions of matroid polytopes. Specifically, we show that the $h$-vector of the order complex of the lattice of flats of a matroid is component-wise non-increasing under a weak map. This result extends to the flag $h$-vector. We note that the analogous result also holds for independence complexes and rank-preserving weak maps.

This text is dedicated to Jacques Tits's ideas on geometry over F1, the field with one element. In a first part, we explain how thin Tits geometries surface as rational point sets over the Krasner hyperfield, which links these ideas to combinatorial flag varieties in the sense of Borovik, Gelfand and White and F1-geometry in the sense of Connes and Consani. A completely novel feature is our approach to algebraic groups over F1 in terms of an alteration of the very concept of a group. In the second part, we study an incidence-geometrical counterpart of (epimorphisms to) thin Tits geometries; we introduce and classify all F1-structures on 3-dimensional projective spaces over finite fields. This extends recent work of Thas and Thas on epimorphisms of projective planes (and other rank 2 buildings) to thin planes.
Discrete Differential Geometry and Cluster Algebras via TCD maps
In this PhD thesis we develop the frame work of triple crossing diagram maps (TCD maps), which describes constrained configurations of points in projective spaces and discrete dynamics on these configurations. We are able to capture the constraints and dynamics of a large list of examples that occur in discrete differential geometry (DDG), discrete integrable systems and exactly solvable models. We explain how to apply various geometric operations to TCD maps, including projections, intersections with hyperplanes and projective dualization. In fact, we show how many examples in the literature are related by the aforementioned operations. Moreover, we introduce a hierarchy of cluster structures on TCD maps, thus answering the open question how objects of DDG relate to cluster structures. At the same time, the general cluster structure reproduces cluster structures known for the pentagram map, T-graphs and t-embeddings. We also explain how the cluster structures behave under geometric operations. Via the cluster structures, the TCD maps are also related to the probabilistic dimer model. The spanning tree model and the Ising model can be obtained as special cases of the dimer model, and we investigate how these special cases relate to geometry. This also leads to two new incidence theorems in relation to quadrics and null-polarities in $\mathbb C \mathrm P^3$. Finally, we also show how TCD maps relate to the Fock-Goncharov moduli spaces of projective flag configurations.
Applications of Homogeneous Fiber Bundles to the Schubert Varieties
This article explores the relationship between Schubert varieties and equivariant embeddings, using the framework of homogeneous fiber bundles over flag varieties. We show that the homogenous fiber bundles obtained from Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen varieties are always toroidal. Furthermore, we identify the wonderful varieties among them. We give a short proof of a conjecture of Gao, Hodges, and Yong for deciding when a Schubert variety is spherical with respect to an action of a Levi subgroup. By using BP-decompositions, we obtain a characterization of the smooth spherical Schubert varieties. Among the other applications of our results are: 1) a characterization of the spherical Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen varieties, 2) an alternative proof of the fact that, in type A, every singular Schubert variety of torus complexity 1 is a spherical Schubert variety, and 3) a proof of the fact that, for simply laced algebraic groups of adjoint type, every spherical $G$-Schubert variety is locally rigid, that is to say, the first cohomology of its tangent sheaf vanishes.

We prove a short, root-system uniform, combinatorial classification of Levi-spherical Schubert varieties for any generalized flag variety $G/B$ of finite Lie type. We apply this to the study of multiplicity-free decompositions of a Demazure module into irreducible representations of a Levi subgroup.
Symmetric Toda, gradient flows, and tridiagonalization

The Toda lattice (1967) is a Hamiltonian system given by $n$ points on a line governed by an exponential potential. Flaschka (1974) showed that the Toda lattice is integrable by interpreting it as a flow on the space of symmetric tridiagonal $n\times n$ matrices, while Moser (1975) showed that it is a gradient flow on a projective space. The symmetric Toda flow of Deift, Li, Nanda, and Tomei (1986) generalizes the Toda lattice flow from tridiagonal to all symmetric matrices. They showed the flow is integrable, in the classical sense of having $d$ integrals in involution on its $2d$-dimensional phase space. The system may be viewed as integrable in other ways as well. Firstly, Symes (1980, 1982) solved it explicitly via $QR$-factorization and conjugation. Secondly, Deift, Li, Nanda, and Tomei (1986) 'tridiagonalized' the system into a family of tridiagonal Toda lattices which are solvable and integrable. In this paper we derive their tridiagonalization procedure in a natural way using the fact that the symmetric Toda flow is diffeomorphic to a twisted gradient flow on a flag variety, which may then be decomposed into flows on a product of Grassmannians. These flows may in turn be embedded into projective spaces via Plücker embeddings, and mapped back to tridiagonal Toda lattice flows using Moser's construction. In addition, we study the tridiagonalized flows projected onto a product of permutohedra, using the twisted moment map of Bloch, Flaschka, and Ratiu (1990). These ideas are facilitated in a natural way by the theory of total positivity, building on our previous work (2023).

Affine Bruhat--Tits buildings are geometric spaces extracting the combinatorics of algebraic groups. The building of $\mathrm{PGL}$ parametrizes flags of subspaces/lattices in or, equivalently, norms on a fixed finite-dimensional vector space, up to homothety. It has first been studied by Goldman and Iwahori as a piecewise-linear analogue of symmetric spaces. The space of seminorms compactifies the space of norms and admits a natural surjective restriction map from the Berkovich analytification of projective space that factors the natural tropicalization map. Inspired by Payne's result that the analytification is the limit of all tropicalizations, we show that the space of seminorms is the limit of all tropicalized linear embeddings $ι\colon\mathbb{P}^r\hookrightarrow\mathbb{P}^n$ and prove a faithful tropicalization result for compactified linear spaces. The space of seminorms is in fact the tropical linear space associated to the universal realizable valuated matroid.
Knuth moves for Schubert polynomials
In our previous work we have introduced an analogue of Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence for Schubert calculus of the complete flag varieties. The objects inserted are certain biwords, the outcomes of insertion are bumpless pipe dreams, and the recording objects are decorated chains in Bruhat order. In this paper we study a class of biwords that have a certain associativity property; we call them plactic biwords. We introduce analogues of Knuth moves on plactic biwords, and prove that any two plactic biwords with the same insertion bumpless pipe dream are connected by those moves.
The Rado Multiplicity Problem in Vector Spaces over Finite Fields
We study an analogue of the Ramsey multiplicity problem for additive structures, in particular establishing the minimum number of monochromatic 3-APs in 3-colorings of $\mathbb{F}_3^n$ as well as obtaining the first non-trivial lower bound for the minimum number of monochromatic 4-APs in 2-colorings of $\mathbb{F}_5^n$. The former parallels results by Cumings et al (2013) in extremal graph theory and the latter improves upon results of Saad and Wolf (2017) The lower bounds are notably obtained by extending the flag algebra calculus of Razborov (2007) to additive structures in vector spaces over finite fields.
Maximum Flag-Rank Distance Codes
In this paper we extend the study of linear spaces of upper triangular matrices endowed with the flag-rank metric. Such metric spaces are isometric to certain spaces of degenerate flags and have been suggested as suitable framework for network coding. In this setting we provide a Singleton-like bound which relates the parameters of a flag-rank-metric code. This allows us to introduce the family of maximum flag-rank distance codes, that are flag-rank-metric codes meeting the Singleton-like bound with equality. Finally, we provide several constructions of maximum flag-rank distance codes.
Alcove Walks and GKM Theory for Affine Flags
We develop the GKM theory for the torus-equivariant cohomology of the affine flag variety using the combinatorics of alcove walks. Dual to the usual GKM setup, which depicts the orbits of the small torus action on a graph, alcove walks take place in tessellations of Euclidean space. Walks in affine rank two occur on triangulations of the plane, providing a more direct connection to splines used for approximating surfaces. Alcove walks in GKM theory also need not be minimal length, and can instead be randomly generated, giving rise to more flexible implementation. This work reinterprets and recovers classical results in GKM theory on the affine flag variety, generalizing them to both non-minimal and folded alcove walks, all motivated by applications to splines.
Turán density of long tight cycle minus one hyperedge
Denote by $\mathcal{C}^-_{\ell}$ the $3$-uniform hypergraph obtained by removing one hyperedge from the tight cycle on $\ell$ vertices. It is conjectured that the Turán density of $\mathcal{C}^-_{5}$ is $1/4$. In this paper, we make progress toward this conjecture by proving that the Turán density of $\mathcal{C}^-_{\ell}$ is $1/4$, for every sufficiently large $\ell$ not divisible by $3$. One of the main ingredients of our proof is a forbidden-subhypergraph characterization of the hypergraphs, for which there exists a tournament on the same vertex set such that every hyperedge is a cyclic triangle in this tournament.
A byproduct of our method is a human-checkable proof for the upper bound on the maximum number of almost similar triangles in a planar point set, which was recently proved using the method of flag algebras by Balogh, Clemen, and Lidický.
$P$-partitions with flags and back stable quasisymmetric functions
Stanley's theory of $(P,ω)$-partitions is a standard tool in combinatorics. It can be extended to allow for the presence of a restriction, that is a given maximal value for partitions at each vertex of the poset, as was shown by Assaf and Bergeron. Here we present a variation on their approach, which applies more generally. The enumerative side of the theory is more naturally expressed in terms of back stable quasisymmetric functions. We study the space of such functions, following the work of Lam, Lee and Shimozono on back stable symmetric functions. As applications we describe a new basis for the ring of polynomials that we call forest polynomials. Additionally we give a signed multiplicity-free expansion for any monomial expressed in the basis of slide polynomials.
Richardson varieties, projected Richardson varieties and positroid varieties
This is a survey article on Richardson varieties and their combinatorics. A Richardson variety is the intersection, inside the flag manifold GL_n/B_+, of a Schubert cell (B_- u B_+)/B_+ and an opposite Schubert cell (B_+ w B_+)/B_+ (or the similar intersection of Schubert varieties). In this survey, we provide an overview of what is known about (1) homogeneous coordinate rings of Richardson varieties, their bases and degenerations (2) parametrizations of Richardson varieties using Bott-Samelson varieties (3) Deodhar's decompositions of the flag manifold and of Richardson varieties within it and (4) total positivity in the flag manifold. We also provide an overview of the combinatorics of positroid varieties, their relations to Richardson varieties, and how they are parametrized using plabic graphs. Most of this survey is an overview of other authors' work over the last forty years, but there are also some minor original results: For example, that coordinate rings of open Richardson varieties are UFD's (Corollary 3.23), that the Deodhar decomposition is not a stratification in Lie type A (Section 4.3) and explicit descriptions of the Deodhar decomposition in terms of ranks of submatrices (Section 4.4).
F-Polynomials of Donaldson-Thomas Transformations
$F$-polynomials are integer coefficient polynomials encoding the mutations of cluster variables inside a cluster algebra. In this article, we study the $F$-polynomials associated with the action of Donaldson-Thomas transformations on cluster variables. For acyclic quivers, quivers of surface types, and quivers associated with triples of flags, we give explicit descriptions of their Donaldson-Thomas $F$-polynomials in terms of generating functions for ideals inside a labeled poset. We also describe the combinatorial procedure needed to modify these labeled posets to obtain Donaldson-Thomas $F$-polynomials for full subquivers and triangular extensions.
Strong equivariant positivity for homogeneous varieties and back-stable coproduct coefficients
Using a transversality argument, we demonstrate the positivity of certain coefficients in the equivariant cohomology and K-theory of a generalized flag manifold. This strengthens earlier equivariant positivity theorems (of Graham and Anderson-Griffeth-Miller) by further constraining the roots which can appear in these coefficients.
As an application, we deduce that structure constants for comultiplication in the equivariant K-theory of an infinite flag manifold exhibit an unusual positivity property, establishing conjectures of Lam-Lee-Shimozono. Along the way, we present alternative formulas for the back stable Grothendieck polynomials defined by those authors, as well as a new method for computing the coproduct coefficients.
The Isomorphism Problem for cominuscule Schubert Varieties

Cominuscule flag varieties generalize Grassmannians to other Lie types. Schubert varieties in cominuscule flag varieties are indexed by posets of roots labeled long/short. These labeled posets generalize Young diagrams. We prove that Schubert varieties in potentially different cominuscule flag varieties are isomorphic as varieties if and only if their corresponding labeled posets are isomorphic, generalizing the classification of Grassmannian Schubert varieties using Young diagrams by the last two authors. Our proof is type-independent.
Positivity for partial tropical flag varieties
We study positivity notions for the tropicalization of type A flag varieties and the flag Dressian. We focus on the hollow case, where we have one constituent of rank 1 and another of corank 1. We characterize the three different notions that exist for this case in terms of Plücker coordinates. These notions are the tropicalization of the totally non-negative flag variety, Bruhat subdivisions and the non-negative flag Dressian. We show the first example where the first two concepts above do not coincide. In this case the non-negative flag Dressian equals the tropicalization of the Plücker non-negative flag variety and is equivalent to flag positroid subdivisions. Using these characterizations, we provide similar conditions on the Plücker coordinates for flag varieties of arbitrary rank that are necessary for each of these positivity notions, and conjecture them to be sufficient. In particular we show that regular flag positroid subdivisions always come from the non-negative Dressian. Along the way, we show that the set of Bruhat interval polytopes equals the set of twisted Bruhat interval polytopes and we introduce valuated flag gammoids.
