On Equivariant flag $f$-vectors for balanced relative simplicial complexes
We study the equivariant flag $f$-vector and equivariant flag $h$-vector of a balanced relative simplicial complex with respect to a group action. When the complex satisfies Serre's condition $(S_{\ell}),$ we show that the equivariant flag $h$-vector, the equivariant $h$-vector, and the equivariant $f$-vector satisfy several inequalities.
We apply these results to the study of $P$-partitions of double posets, and weak colorings of mixed graphs.

Green and Tao's arithmetic regularity lemma and counting lemma together apply to systems of linear forms which satisfy a particular algebraic criterion known as the `flag condition'. We give an arithmetic regularity lemma and counting lemma which applies to all systems of linear forms.
Exceptional sequences in semidistributive lattices and the poset topology of wide subcategories

Let $Λ$ be a finite-dimensional algebra over a field $K$. We describe how Buan and Marsh's $τ$-exceptional sequences can be used to give a "brick labeling" of a certain poset of wide subcategories of finitely-generated $Λ$-modules. When $Λ$ is representation-directed, we prove that there exists a total order on the set of bricks which makes this into an EL-labeling. Motivated by the connection between classical exceptional sequences and noncrossing partitions, we then turn our attention towards the study of (well-separated) completely semidistributive lattices. Such lattices come equipped with a bijection between their completely join-irreducible and completely meet-irreducible elements, known as rowmotion or simply the "$κ$-map". Generalizing known results for finite semidistributive lattices, we show that the $κ$-map determines exactly when a set of completely join-irreducible elements forms a "canonical join representation". A consequence is that the corresponding "canonical join complex" is a flag simplicial complex, as has been shown for finite semidistributive lattices and lattices of torsion classes of finite-dimensional algebras. Finally, in the case of lattices of torsion classes of finite-dimensional algebras, we demonstrate how Jasso's $τ$-tilting reduction can be encoded using the $κ$-map. We use this to define $κ^d$-exceptional sequences for finite semidistributive lattices. These are distinguished sequences of completely join-irreducible elements which we prove specialize to $τ$-exceptional sequences in the algebra setting.

A minimal presentation of the cohomology ring of the flag manifold $GL_n/B$ was given in [A. Borel, 1953]. This presentation was extended by [E. Akyildiz-A. Lascoux-P. Pragacz, 1992] to a non-minimal one for all Schubert varieties. Work of [Gasharov-Reiner, 2002] gave a short, i.e. polynomial-size, presentation for a subclass of Schubert varieties that includes the smooth ones. In [V. Reiner-A. Woo-A. Yong, 2011], a general shortening was found; it implies an exponential upper bound of $2^n$ on the number of generators required. That work states a minimality conjecture whose significance would be an exponential lower bound of $\sqrt{2}^{n+2}/\sqrt{πn}$ on the number of generators needed in worst case, giving the first obstructions to short presentations. We prove the minimality conjecture. Our proof uses the Hopf algebra structure of the ring of symmetric functions.

Rhoades defined a skein action of the symmetric group on noncrossing set partitions which generalized an action of the symmetric group on matchings. The $\mathfrak{S}_n$-action on matchings is made possible via the Ptolemy relation, while the action on set partitions is defined in terms of a set of skein relations that generalize the Ptolemy relation. The skein action on noncrossing set partitions has seen applications to coinvariant theory and coordinate rings of partial flag varieties. In this paper, we will show how Rhoades' $\mathfrak{S}_n$-module can be embedded into the $\mathfrak{S}_n$-module generated by matchings, thereby explaining how Rhoades' generalized skein relations all arise from the Ptolemy relation.

We provide identities of inverse Chevalley type for the graded characters of level-zero Demazure submodules of extremal weight modules over a quantum affine algebra of type $C$. These identities express the product $e^μ \, \mathrm{gch} \, V_{x}^{-}(λ)$ of the (one-dimensional) character $e^μ$, where $μ$ is a (not necessarily dominant) minuscule weight, with the graded character $\mathrm{gch} \, V_{x}^{-}(λ)$ of the level-zero Demazure submodule $V_{x}^{-}(λ)$ over the quantum affine algebra $U_{\mathsf{q}}(\mathfrak{g}_{\mathrm{af}})$ as an explicit finite linear combination of the graded characters of level-zero Demazure submodules. These identities immediately imply the corresponding inverse Chevalley formulas in the torus-equivariant $K$-group of the semi-infinite flag manifold $\mathbf{Q}_{G}$ associated to a connected, simply-connected and simple algebraic group $G$ of type $C$. Also, we derive cancellation-free identities from the identities above of inverse Chevalley type in the case that $μ$ is a standard basis element $\varepsilon_{k}$ in the weight lattice $P$ of $G$.
Totally Nonnegative Tropical Flags and the Totally Nonnegative Flag Dressian
We study the totally nonnegative part of the complete flag variety and of its tropicalization. We show that Lusztig's notion of nonnegative complete flag variety coincides with the flags in the complete flag variety which have nonnegative Pl{ü}cker coordinates. This mirrors the characterization of the totally nonnegative Grassmannian as those points in the Grassmannian whose Pl{ü}cker coordinates are all nonnegative. We then study the tropical complete flag variety and complete flag Dressian, which are two tropical versions of the complete flag variety, capturing realizable and abstract flags of tropical linear spaces, respectively. In general, the complete flag Dressian properly contains the tropical complete flag variety. However, we show that the totally nonnegative parts of these spaces coincide.

A flag positroid of ranks $\boldsymbol{r}:=(r_1<\dots <r_k)$ on $[n]$ is a flag matroid that can be realized by a real $r_k \times n$ matrix $A$ such that the $r_i \times r_i$ minors of $A$ involving rows $1,2,\dots,r_i$ are nonnegative for all $1\leq i \leq k$. In this paper we explore the polyhedral and tropical geometry of flag positroids, particularly when $\boldsymbol{r}:=(a, a+1,\dots,b)$ is a sequence of consecutive numbers. In this case we show that the nonnegative tropical flag variety TrFl$_{\boldsymbol{r},n}^{\geq 0}$ equals the nonnegative flag Dressian FlDr$_{\boldsymbol{r},n}^{\geq 0}$, and that the points $\boldsymbolμ = (μ_a,\ldots, μ_b)$ of TrFl$_{\boldsymbol{r},n}^{\geq 0} =$ FlDr$_{\boldsymbol{r},n}^{\geq 0}$ give rise to coherent subdivisions of the flag positroid polytope $P(\underline{\boldsymbolμ})$ into flag positroid polytopes. Our results have applications to Bruhat interval polytopes: for example, we show that a complete flag matroid polytope is a Bruhat interval polytope if and only if its $(\leq 2)$-dimensional faces are Bruhat interval polytopes. Our results also have applications to realizability questions. We define a positively oriented flag matroid to be a sequence of positively oriented matroids $(χ_1,\dots,χ_k)$ which is also an oriented flag matroid. We then prove that every positively oriented flag matroid of ranks $\boldsymbol{r}=(a,a+1,\dots,b)$ is realizable.
Affine stresses: the partition of unity and Kalai's reconstruction conjectures

Kalai conjectured that if $P$ is a simplicial $d$-polytope that has no missing faces of dimension $d-1$, then the graph of $P$ and the space of affine $2$-stresses of $P$ determine $P$ up to affine equivalence. We propose a higher-dimensional generalization of this conjecture: if $2\leq i\leq d/2$ and $P$ is a simplicial $d$-polytope that has no missing faces of dimension $\geq d-i+1$, then the space of affine $i$-stresses of $P$ determines the space of affine $1$-stresses of $P$. We prove this conjecture for (1) $k$-stacked $d$-polytopes with $2\leq i\leq k\leq d/2-1$, (2) $d$-polytopes that have no missing faces of dimension $\geq d-2i+2$, and (3) flag PL $(d-1)$-spheres with generic embeddings (for all $2\leq i\leq d/2$). We also discuss several related results and conjectures. For instance, we show that if $P$ is a simplicial $d$-polytope that has no missing faces of dimension $\geq d-2i+2$, then the $(i-1)$-skeleton of $P$ and the set of sign vectors of affine $i$-stresses of $P$ determine the combinatorial type of $P$. Along the way, we establish the partition of unity of affine stresses: for any $1\leq i\leq (d-1)/2$, the space of affine $i$-stresses of a simplicial $d$-polytope as well as the space of affine $i$-stresses of a simplicial $(d-1)$-sphere (with a generic embedding) can be expressed as the sum of affine $i$-stress spaces of vertex stars. This is analogous to Adiprasito's partition of unity of linear stresses for Cohen--Macaulay complexes.

Given an $(r+1)$-chromatic graph $F$ and a graph $H$ that does not contain $F$ as a subgraph, we say that $H$ is strictly $F$-Turán-good if the Turán graph $T_{r}(n)$ is the unique graph containing the maximum number of copies of $H$ among all $F$-free graphs on $n$ vertices for every $n$ large enough.
Győri, Pach and Simonovits (1991) proved that cycle $C_4$ of length four is strictly $K_{r+1}$-Turán-good for all $r\geq 2$. In this article, we extend this result and show that $C_4$ is strictly $F$-Turán-good, where $F$ is an $(r+1)$-chromatic graph with $r\ge 2$ and a color-critical edge. Moreover, we show that every $n$-vertex $C_4$-free graph $G$ with $N(H,G)=\ex(n,C_4,F)-o(n^4)$ can be obtained by adding or deleting $o(n^2)$ edges from $T_r(n)$. Our proof uses the flag algebra method developed by Razborov (2007).

The $q$-Whittaker function $W_λ(\mathbf{x};q)$ associated to a partition $λ$ is a $q$-analogue of the Schur function $s_λ(\mathbf{x})$, and is defined as the $t=0$ specialization of the Macdonald polynomial $P_λ(\mathbf{x};q,t)$. We show combinatorially how to expand $W_λ(\mathbf{x};q)$ in terms of partial flags compatible with a nilpotent endomorphism over the finite field of size $1/q$. This yields an expression analogous to a well-known formula for the Hall-Littlewood functions. We show that considering pairs of partial flags and taking Jordan forms leads to a probabilistic bijection between nonnegative-integer matrices and pairs of semistandard tableaux of the same shape, proving the Cauchy identity for $q$-Whittaker functions. We call our probabilistic bijection the $q$-Burge correspondence, and prove that in the limit as $q\to 0$, we recover a description of the classical Burge correspondence (also known as column RSK) due to Rosso (2012). A key step in the proof is the enumeration of an arbitrary double coset of $\text{GL}_n$ modulo two parabolic subgroups, which we find to be of independent interest. As an application, we use the $q$-Burge correspondence to count isomorphism classes of certain modules over the preprojective algebra of a type $A$ quiver (i.e. a path), refined according to their socle filtrations. This develops a connection between the combinatorics of symmetric functions and the representation theory of preprojective algebras.

This paper determines the relationship between the geometry of retractions and the combinatorics of folded galleries for arbitrary affine buildings, and so provides a unified framework to study orbits in affine flag varieties. We introduce the notion of labeled folded galleries for any affine building X and use these to describe the preimages of chimney retractions. When X is the building for a group with an affine Tits system, such as the Bruhat-Tits building for a group over a local field, we can then relate labeled folded galleries and shadows to double coset intersections in affine flag varieties. This result generalizes the authors' previous joint work with Naqvi on groups over function fields.
Underlying Flag Polymatroids

We describe a natural geometric relationship between matroids and underlying flag matroids by relating the geometry of the greedy algorithm to monotone path polytopes. This perspective allows us to generalize the construction of underlying flag matroids to polymatroids. We show that the polytopes associated to underlying flag polymatroid are simple by proving that they are normally equivalent to certain nestohedra. We use this to show that polymatroids realized by subspace arrangements give rise to smooth toric varieties in flag varieties and we interpret our construction in terms of toric quotients. We give various examples that illustrate the rich combinatorial structure of flag polymatroids. Finally, we study general monotone paths on polymatroid polytopes, that relate to the enumeration of certain Young tableaux.
Sumsets of sequences in abelian groups and flags in field extensions
For a finite abelian group $G$ with subsets $A$ and $B$, the sumset $AB$ is $\{ab \mid a\in A, b \in B\}$. A fundamental problem in additive combinatorics is to find a lower bound for the cardinality of $AB$ in terms of the cardinalities of $A$ and $B$. This article addresses the analogous problem for sequences in abelian groups and flags in field extensions. For a positive integer $n$, let $[n]$ denote the set $\{0,\dots,n-1\}$. To a finite abelian group $G$ of cardinality $n$ and an ordering $G = \{1=v_0,\dots,v_{n-1}\}$, associate the function $T \colon [n] \times [n] \rightarrow [n]$ defined by \[
T(i,j) = \min\big\{k \in [n] \mid \{v_0,\dots,v_i\}\{v_0,\dots,v_j\} \subseteq \{v_0,\dots,v_k\}\big\}. \] Under the natural partial ordering, what functions $T$ are minimal as $\{1=v_0,\dots,v_{n-1}\}$ ranges across orderings of finite abelian groups of cardinality $n$? We also ask the analogous question for degree $n$ field extensions.
We explicitly classify all minimal $T$ when $n < 18$, $n$ is a prime power, or $n$ is a product of $2$ distinct primes. When $n$ is not as above, we explicitly construct orderings of abelian groups whose associated function $T$ is not contained in the above classification. We also associate to orderings a polyhedron encoding the data of $T$.
Initial degenerations of flag varieties

We prove that the initial degenerations of the flag variety admit closed immersions into finite inverse limits of flag matroid strata, where the diagrams are derived from matroidal subdivisions of a suitable flag matroid polytope. As an application, we prove that the initial degenerations of $\operatorname{F\ell}^{\circ}(n)$ -- the open subvariety of the complete flag variety $\operatorname{F\ell}(n)$ consisting of flags in general position -- are smooth and irreducible when $n\leq 4$. We also study the Chow quotient of $\operatorname{F\ell}(n)$ by the diagonal torus of $\operatorname{PGL}(n)$, and show that, for $n=4$, this is a log crepant resolution of its log canonical model.
Motzkin numbers and flag codes
Motzkin numbers have been widely studied since they count many different combinatorial objects. In this paper we present a new appearance of this remarkable sequence in the network coding setting through a particular case of multishot codes called flag codes. A flag code is a set of sequences of nested subspaces (flags) of a vector space over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. If the list of dimensions is $(1, \dots, n-1)$, we speak about a full flag code. The flag distance is defined as the sum of the respective subspace distances and can be represented by means of the so-called distance vectors. We show that the number of distance vectors corresponding to the full flag variety on $\mathbb{F}_q^n$ is exactly the $n$-th Motzkin number. Moreover, we can identify the integer sequence that counts the number of possible distance vectors associated to a full flag code with prescribed minimum distance.
Bumpless pipe dream RSK, growth diagrams, and Schubert structure constants
We introduce analogs of left and right RSK insertion for Schubert calculus of complete flag varieties. The objects being inserted are certain biwords, the insertion objects are bumpless pipe dreams, and the recording objects are decorated chains in Bruhat order. As an application, we adopt Lenart's growth diagrams of permutations to give a combinatorial rule for Schubert structure constants in the separated descent case.

We study toric degenerations arising from Gröbner degenerations or the tropicalization of partial flag varieties. We produce a new family of toric degenerations of partial flag varieties whose combinatorics are governed by matching fields and combinatorial mutations of polytopes. We provide an explicit description of the polytopes associated with the resulting toric varieties in terms of matching field polytopes. These polytopes encode the combinatorial data of monomial degenerations of Plücker forms for the Grassmannians. We give a description of matching field polytopes of flag varieties as Minkowski sums and show that all such polytopes are normal. The polytopes we obtain are examples of Newton-Okounkov bodies for particular full-rank valuations for flag varieties. Furthermore, we study a certain explicitly-defined large family of matching field polytopes and prove that all polytopes in this family are connected by combinatorial mutations. Finally, we apply our methods to explicitly compute toric degenerations of small Grassmannians and flag varieties and obtain new families of toric degenerations.

Given integers $1 \le k_1 < \cdots < k_l \le n-1$, let $\text{Fl}_{k_1,\dots,k_l;n}$ denote the type $A$ partial flag variety consisting of all chains of subspaces $(V_{k_1}\subset\cdots\subset V_{k_l})$ inside $\mathbb{R}^n$, where each $V_k$ has dimension $k$. Lusztig (1994, 1998) introduced the totally positive part $\text{Fl}_{k_1,\dots,k_l;n}^{>0}$ as the subset of partial flags which can be represented by a totally positive $n\times n$ matrix, and defined the totally nonnegative part $\text{Fl}_{k_1,\dots,k_l;n}^{\ge 0}$ as the closure of $\text{Fl}_{k_1,\dots,k_l;n}^{>0}$. On the other hand, following Postnikov (2007), we define $\text{Fl}_{k_1,\dots,k_l;n}^{Δ>0}$ and $\text{Fl}_{k_1,\dots,k_l;n}^{Δ\ge 0}$ as the subsets of $\text{Fl}_{k_1,\dots,k_l;n}$ where all Plücker coordinates are positive and nonnegative, respectively. It follows from the definitions that Lusztig's total positivity implies Plücker positivity, and it is natural to ask when these two notions of positivity agree. Rietsch (2009) proved that they agree in the case of the Grassmannian $\text{Fl}_{k;n}$, and Chevalier (2011) showed that the two notions are distinct for $\text{Fl}_{1,3;4}$. We show that in general, the two notions agree if and only if $k_1, \dots, k_l$ are consecutive integers. We give an elementary proof of this result (including for the case of Grassmannians) based on classical results in linear algebra and the theory of total positivity. We also show that the cell decomposition of $\text{Fl}_{k_1,\dots,k_l;n}^{\ge 0}$ coincides with its matroid decomposition if and only if $k_1,\dots,k_l$ are consecutive integers, which was previously only known for complete flag varieties, Grassmannians, and $\text{Fl}_{1,3;4}$. Finally, we determine which notions of positivity are compatible with a natural action of the cyclic group of order $n$ that rotates the index set.
New Ramsey Multiplicity Bounds and Search Heuristics

We study two related problems concerning the number of homogeneous subsets of given size in graphs that go back to questions of Erdős. Most notably, we improve the upper bounds on the Ramsey multiplicity of $K_4$ and $K_5$ and settle the minimum number of independent sets of size $4$ in graphs with clique number at most $4$. Motivated by the elusiveness of the symmetric Ramsey multiplicity problem, we also introduce an off-diagonal variant and obtain tight results when counting monochromatic $K_4$ or $K_5$ in only one of the colors and triangles in the other. The extremal constructions for each problem turn out to be blow-ups of a graph of constant size and were found through search heuristics. They are complemented by lower bounds established using flag algebras, resulting in a fully computer-assisted approach. For some of our theorems we can also derive that the extremal construction is stable in a very strong sense. More broadly, these problems lead us to the study of the region of possible pairs of clique and independent set densities that can be realized as the limit of some sequence of graphs.
