Simple homotopy of flag simplicial complexes and contractible contractions of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In his work on molecular spaces, Ivashchenko introduced the notion of an $\mathfrak{I}$-contractible transformation on a graph $G$, a family of addition/deletion operations on its vertices and edges. Chen, Yau, and Yeh used these operations to define the $\mathfrak{I}$-homotopy type of a graph, and showed that $\mathfrak{I}$-contractible transformations preserve the simple homotopy type of $C(G)$, the clique complex of $G$. In other work, Boulet, Fieux, and Jouve introduced the notion of $s$-homotopy of graphs to characterize the simple homotopy type of a flag simplicial complex. They proved that $s$-homotopy preserves $\mathfrak{I}$-homotopy, and asked whether the converse holds. In this note, we answer their question in the affirmative, concluding that graphs $G$ and $H$ are $\mathfrak{I}$-homotopy equivalent if and only if $C(G)$ and $C(H)$ are simple homotopy equivalent. We also show that a finite graph $G$ is $\mathfrak{I}$-contractible if and only if $C(G)$ is contractible, which answers a question posed by the first author, Espinoza, Frías-Armenta, and Hernández. We use these ideas to give a characterization of simple homotopy for arbitrary simplicial complexes in terms of links of vertices.

A Geometric Realization of Partially-Symmetric Macdonald Polynomials
We formulate a precise conjecture relating integral form partially-symmetric Macdonald polynomials and the parabolic flag Hilbert schemes of Carlsson, Gorsky, and Mellit. This extends, in an explicit fashion, Haiman's realization of modified Macdonald symmetric functions via Hilbert schemes of points in the plane. As evidence for our conjecture we prove that it is compatible with the action of certain elements in Carlsson and Mellit's algebra $\mathbb{A}_{t,q}$, including degree $1$ Pieri formulas.
The Four-Color Ramsey Multiplicity of Triangles
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study a generalization of a famous result of Goodman and establish that asymptotically at least a $1/256$ fraction of all triangles needs to be monochromatic in any four-coloring of the edges of a complete graph. We also show that any large enough extremal construction must be based on a blow-up of one of the two $R(3,3,3)$ Ramsey-colorings of $K_{16}$. This result is obtained through an efficient flag algebra formulation by exploiting problem-specific combinatorial symmetries that also allows us to study some related problems.

Intersection multiplicity one for the Belkale-Kumar product in G/B
Consider the complete flag variety $X$ of a complex semisimple algebraic group $G$. We show that the structure coefficients of the Belkale-Kumar product $\odot_0$, on the cohomology $\mathrm{H}^{*}(X,\mathbf{Z})$, are all either $0$ or $1$. We also derive some consequences. The proof that is mainly geometric also uses new combinatorial results on root systems. Moreover, it is uniform and avoids case by case considerations.

Growth Diagrams for Schubert RSK
Motivated by classical combinatorial Schubert calculus on the Grassmannian, Huang--Pylyavskyy introduced a generalized theory of Robinson-Schensted-Knuth (RSK) correspondence for studying Schubert calculus on the complete flag variety via insertion algorithms. The inputs of the correspondence are certain biwords, the insertion objects are bumpless pipe dreams, and the recording objects are certain chains in Bruhat order. In particular, they defined plactic biwords and showed that classical Knuth relations can be generalized to plactic biwords. In this paper, we give an analogue of Fomin's growth diagrams for this generalized RSK correspondence on plactic biwords. We show that this growth diagram recovers the bijection between pipe dreams and bumpless pipe dreams of Gao--Huang.
Calibrated representations of the double Dyck path algebra
The double Dyck path algebra $\mathbb{A}_{q,t}$ and its polynomial representation first arose as a key figure in the proof of the celebrated Shuffle Theorem of Carlsson and Mellit. A geometric formulation for an equivalent algebra $\mathbb{B}_{q,t}$ was then given by the second author and Carlsson and Mellit using the K-theory of parabolic flag Hilbert schemes. In this article, we initiate the systematic study of the representation theory of the double Dyck path algebra $\mathbb{B}_{q,t}$. We define a natural extension of this algebra and study its calibrated representations. We show that the polynomial representation is calibrated, and place it into a large family of calibrated representations constructed from posets satisfying certain conditions. We also define tensor products and duals of these representations, thus proving (under suitable conditions) the category of calibrated representations is generically monoidal. As an application, we prove that tensor powers of the polynomial representation can be constructed from the equivariant K-theory of parabolic Gieseker moduli spaces.

Mirković-Vilonen Polytopes from Combinatorics
Mirković-Vilonen (MV) polytopes are a class of generalized permutahedra originating from geometric representation theory. In this paper we study MV polytopes coming from matroid polytopes, flag matroid polytopes, Bruhat interval polytopes, and Schubitopes. We give classifications and combinatorial conditions for when these polytopes are MV polytopes. We also describe how the crystal structure on MV polytopes manifests combinatorially in these situations. As a special case, we show that the Newton polytopes of Schubert polynomials and key polynomials are MV polytopes.
Flag transitive geometries with trialities and no dualities coming from Suzuki groups
Recently, Leemans and Stokes constructed an infinite family of incidence geometries admitting trialities but no dualities from the groups PSL(2,q) (where $q=p^{3n}$ with $p$ a prime and $n>0$ a positive integer). Unfortunately these geometries are not flag transitive. In this paper, we construct the first infinite family of incidence geometries of rank three that are flag transitive and have trialities but no dualities. These geometries are constructed using chamber systems of Suzuki groups Sz(q) (where $q=2^{2e+1}$ with $e$ a positive integer and $2e+1$ is divisible by 3) and the trialities come from field automorphisms. We also construct an infinite family of regular hypermaps with automorphism group Sz(q) that admit trialities but no dualities.

Toric Schubert varieties and directed Dynkin diagrams
A flag variety is a homogenous variety $G/B$ where $G$ is a simple algebraic group over the complex numbers and $B$ is a Boel subgroup of $G$. A Schubert variety $X_w$ is a subvariety of $G/B$ indexed by an element $w$ in the Weyl group of $G$. It is called toric if it is a toric variety with respect to the maximal torus of $G$ in $B$. In this paper, we associate an edge-labeled digraph $\mathcal{G}_w$ with a toric Schubert variety $X_w$ and classify toric Schubert varieties up to isomorphism. We also give a simple criterion of when a toric Schubert variety $X_w$ is (weak) Fano in terms of $\mathcal{G}_w$. Finally, we discuss whether toric Schubert varieties can be distinguished by their integral cohomology rings up to isomorphism and show that this is the case when $G$ is of simply-laced type.

Chromatic numbers of flag 3-spheres
A recent conjecture of Chudnovsky and Nevo asserts that flag triangulations of spheres always have linear-sized independent sets, with a precisely conjectured proportion depending on the dimension. For dimensions one and two, the lower bound of their conjecture basically follow from constant bounds on the chromatic number of flag triangulations of $S^1$ and $S^2$. This raises a natural question that does not appear to have been considered: For each $d$ is there a constant upper bound for the chromatic number of flag triangulations of $S^d$? Here we show that the answer to this question is no, and use results from Ramsey theory to construct flag triangulations of 3-spheres on $n$ vertices with chromatic number at least $\widetildeΩ(n^{1/4})$.
Characterizing positroid quotients of uniform matroids
We study two-step flag positroids $(P_1, P_2)$, where $P_1$ is a quotient of $P_{2}$. We provide a complete characterization of all two-step flag positroids that contain a uniform matroid, extending and completing a partial result by Benedetti, Chávez, and Jiménez. To contrast general positroids with the special case of lattice path matroids, we show that the containment relations of Grassmann necklaces and conecklaces fully characterize flag lattice path matroids, but are insufficient for general flag positroids. Additionally, we prove that the decorated permutations of any elementary quotient pair are related by a cyclic shift, resolving a conjecture of Benedetti, Chávez and Jiménez.

Total positivity for matroid Schubert varieties
We define the totally nonnegative matroid Schubert variety $\mathcal Y_V$ of a linear subspace $V \subset \mathbb R^n$. We show that $\mathcal Y_V$ is a regular CW complex homeomorphic to a closed ball, with strata indexed by pairs of acyclic flats of the oriented matroid of $V$. This closely resembles the regularity theorem for totally nonnegative generalized flag varieties. As a corollary, we obtain a regular CW structure on the real matroid Schubert variety of $V$.

On the Smooth Locus in Flat Linear Degenerations of Flag Varieties
We use some moment graph techniques, recently introduced by Lanini and Pütz, to provide a combinatorial description of the smooth locus in flat linear degenerations of flag varieties, generalizing a result proved by Cerulli Irelli, Feigin and Reineke for the Feigin degeneration. Moreover, we propose a different combinatorial criterion linking the smoothness at a fixed point to transitive tournaments.

Standard Extension Algebras I: Perverse Sheaves and Fukaya Calculus
In this first of a series of articles on standard extension algebras we study standard perverse sheaves on varieties with $\mathbb{G}_m$-actions. Based on Braden's hyperbolic localisation, we describe their extension algebra geometrically via a convolution structure on the intersections of attracting with repelling cells. We introduce a multiplicative structure on open Richardson varieties which provides a practical way to compose these extensions in case of flag varieties. For open Richardson varieties in Grassmannians we construct two explicit cell decompositions, of Gauss- and of Deodhar-type. It is shown that the latter is a stratification with the same combinatorics as Deodhar's decomposition. We introduce a calculus of Fukaya diagrams to encode the geometry of the decompositions. It provides a model for the cohomology of open Richardson varieties and thus for standard extensions. The calculus is motivated by the Mak-Smith Fukaya-Seidel category of a natural Lefschetz fibration and should allow to compute morphism spaces in there. We finally discuss the relation of our work to extensions of (parabolic) Verma modules in category O as well as to the computation of R- and R'-polynomials.
Newton-Okounkov polytopes of type $A$ flag varieties of small ranks arising from cluster structures
A flag variety is a smooth projective homogeneous variety. In this paper, we study Newton-Okounkov polytopes of the flag variety $Fl(\mathbb{C}^4)$ arising from its cluster structure. More precisely, we present defining inequalities of such Newton-Okounkov polytopes of $Fl(\mathbb{C}^4)$. Moreover, we classify these polytopes, establishing their equivalence under unimodular transformations.
Quantum K Whitney relations for partial flag varieties
In a recent paper, we stated conjectural presentations for the equivariant quantum K ring of partial flag varieties, motivated by physics considerations. In this companion paper, we analyze these presentations mathematically. We start by proving a Nakayama type result for quantum K theory: if the conjectured set of relations deforms a complete set of relations of the classical K theory ring, then they must form a complete set of relations for the quantum K ring. We prove the conjectured presentation in the case of the incidence varieties, and we show that if a quantum K divisor axiom holds (as conjectured by Buch and Mihalcea), then the conjectured presentation also holds for the complete flag variety. Finally, we briefly revisit the change of variables relating the mathematics and physics presentations.

Nil-Hecke rings and the Schubert calculus
The purpose of the present notes is to give a self-contained exposition on the use of the techniques of Nil-Hecke algebras in the localization approach to the equivariant Schubert calculus for cohomology of flag varieties. We also demonstrate how these techniques can be applied to non-crystallographic root systems as well as to study (connective) $K$-theory of flag varieties.

Demazure crystals for flagged key polynomials
One definition of key polynomials is as the weight generating functions of key tableaux. Assaf and Schilling introduced a crystal structure on key tableaux and related it to Morse--Schilling crystals on reduced factorizations for permutations via weak Edelman--Greene insertion. In this paper, we consider generalizations of both crystals depending on a flag. We extend weak EG insertion to a bijection between our flagged objects and show that the recording tableau gives a crystal isomorphism. As an application, we show that flagged key tableaux have a natural Demazure crystal structure, whose characters recover Reiner and Shimozono's flagged key polynomials.

Overview on the theory of double flag varieties for symmetric pairs
Let $ G $ be a connected reductive algebraic group and its symmetric subgroup $ K $. The variety $ \dblFV = K/Q \times G/P $ is called a double flag variety, where $ Q $ and $ P $ are parabolic subgroups of $ K $ and $ G $ respectively. In this article, we make a survey on the theory of double flag varieties for a symmetric pair $ (G, K) $ and report entirely new results and theorems on this theory. Most important topic is the finiteness of $ K $-orbits on $ \dblFV $. We summarize the classification of $ \dblFV $ of finite type, which are scattered in the literatures. In some respects such classifications are complete, and in some cases not. In particular, we get a classification of double flag varieties of finite type when a symmetric pair is of type AIII, using the theorems of Homma who describes ``indecomposable'' objects of such double flag varieties. Together with these classifications, newly developed embedding theory provides double flag varieties of finite type, which are new. Other ingredients in this article are Steinberg theory, generalization of Robinson-Schensted correspondence, and orbit classification via quiver representations. We hope this article is useful for those who want to study the theory of double flag varieties.
A Uniform Identification of Stable Sheaf Cohomology
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper considers generalizations of certain arithmetic complexes appearing in the work of Raicu and VandeBogert in connection with the study of stable sheaf cohomology on flag varieties. Defined over the ring of integer valued polynomials, we prove an isomorphism of these complexes as conjectured by Gao, Raicu, and VandeBogert. In particular, this shows that a previously made identification between the stable sheaf cohomology of hook and two column partition Schur functors applied to the cotangent sheaf of projective space can be made to be uniform with respect to these complexes. These results are extended to the projective space defined over the integers.
