The Flag Major Index and Group Actions on Polynomial Rings
Published • View PublicationBIB
A new extension of the major index, defined in terms of Coxeter elements, is introduced. For the classical Weyl groups of type $B$, it is equidistributed with length. For more general wreath products it appears in an explicit formula for the Hilbert series of the (diagonal action) invariant algebra.
Non-commutative Pieri operators on posets
Published in J. Combin. Th. Ser. A, Vol. 91, No. 1/2, Aug 2000, pp. 84-110 • View PublicationBIB
We consider graded representations of the algebra NC of noncommutative symmetric functions on the Z-linear span of a graded poset P. The matrix coefficients of such a representation give a Hopf morphism from a Hopf algebra HP generated by the intervals of P to the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions. This provides a unified construction of quasi-symmetric generating functions from different branches of algebraic combinatorics, and this construction is useful for transferring techniques and ideas between these branches. In particular we show that the (Hopf) algebra of Billera and Liu related to Eulerian posets is dual to the peak (Hopf) algebra of Stembridge related to enriched P-partitions, and connect this to the combinatorics of the Schubert calculus for isotropic flag manifolds.

Signs in the cd-index of Eulerian partially ordered sets
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graded partially ordered set is Eulerian if every interval has the same number of elements of even rank and of odd rank. Face lattices of convex polytopes are Eulerian. For Eulerian partially ordered sets, the flag vector can be encoded efficiently in the cd-index. The cd-index of a polytope has all positive entries. An important open problem is to give the broadest natural class of Eulerian posets having nonnegative cd-index. This paper completely determines which entries of the cd-index are nonnegative for all Eulerian posets. It also shows that there are no other lower or upper bounds on cd-coefficients (except for the coefficient of c^n).

Lecture notes on quantum cohomology of the flag manifold
This is an exposition of some recent developments related to the object in the title, particularly the combinatorial computation of the (genus 0) Gromov-Witten invariants of the flag manifold and the quadratic algebra approach. The notes are largely based on my joint papers with S.Gelfand, A.N.Kirillov, and A.Postnikov. This is by no means an exhaustive survey of the subject, but rather a casual introduction to its combinatorial aspects.

Flag varieties and interpretations of Young tableau algorithms
Published • View PublicationBIB
The conjugacy classes of nilpotent $n\times n$ matrices can be parametrised by partitions $λ$ of $n$, and for a nilpotent $η$ in the class parametrised by $λ$, the variety $F_η$ of $η$-stable flags has its irreducible components parametrised by the standard Young tableaux of shape $λ$. We indicate how several algorithmic constructions defined for Young tableaux have significance in this context, thus extending Steinberg's result that the relative position of flags generically chosen in the irreducible components of $F_η$ parametrised by tableaux $P$ and $Q$, is the permutation associated to $(P,Q)$ under the Robinson-Schensted correspondence. Other constructions for which we give interpretations are Schützenberger's involution of the set of Young tableaux, jeu de taquin (leading also to an interpretation of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients), and the transpose Robinson-Schensted correspondence (defined using column insertion). In each case we use a doubly indexed family of partitions, defined in terms of the flag (or pair of flags) determined by a point chosen in the variety under consideration. We show that for generic choices, the family satisfies certain combinatorial relations, whence the family describes the computation of the algorithmic operation being interpreted, as we described in a previous publication.

Flag vectors of Eulerian partially ordered sets
Published • View PublicationBIB
The closed cone of flag vectors of Eulerian partially ordered sets is studied. It is completely determined up through rank seven. Half-Eulerian posets are defined. Certain limit posets of Billera and Hetyei are half-Eulerian; they give rise to extreme rays of the cone for Eulerian posets. A new family of linear inequalities valid for flag vectors of Eulerian posets is given.

A Pieri-type formula for isotropic flag manifolds
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., 354 No. 7, (2002), 2659-2705 • View PublicationBIB
We give the formula for multiplying a Schubert class on an odd orthogonal or symplectic flag manifold by a special Schubert class pulled back from a Grassmannian of maximal isotropic subspaces. This is also the formula for multiplying a type $B$ (respectively, type $C$) Schubert polynomial by the Schur $P$-polynomial $p_m$ (respectively, the Schur $Q$-polynomial $q_m$). Geometric constructions and intermediate results allow us to ultimately deduce this from formulas for the classical flag manifold. These intermediate results are concerned with the Bruhat order of the Coxeter group ${\mathcal B}_\infty$, identities of the structure constants for the Schubert basis of cohomology, and intersections of Schubert varieties. We show these identities follow from the Pieri-type formula, except some `hidden symmetries' of the structure constants. Our analysis leads to a new partial order on the Coxeter group ${\mathcal B}_\infty$ and formulas for many of these structure constants.

Flag vectors
This paper defines for each object $X$ that can be constructed out of a finite number of vertices and cells a vector $fX$ lying in a finite dimensional vector space. This is the flag vector of $X$. It is hoped that the quantum topological invariants of a manifold $M$ can be expressed as linear functions of the flag vector of the $i$-graph that arises from any suitable triangulation $T$ of $M$. Flag vectors are also defined for finite groups and more generally for $n$-ary relations. Some problems, and suggested connections with other constructions, particularly that of the associahedron and so on, conclude the presentation.

Graphs, flags and partitions
This paper defines, for each graph $G$, a flag vector $fG$. The flag vectors of the graphs on $n$ vertices span a space whose dimension is $p(n)$, the number of partitions on $n$. The analogy with convex polytopes indicates that the linear inequalities satisfied by $fG$ may be both interesting and accessible. Such would provide inequalities both sharp and subtle on the combinatorial structure of $G$. These may be related to Ramsey theory.

Recognizing Schubert cells
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper focuses on the properties of Schubert cells as quasi-projective subvarieties of a generalized flag variety. More specifically, we investigate the problem of distinguishing between different Schubert cells using vanishing patterns of generalized Plucker coordinates.

Flag-symmetry of the poset of shuffles and a local action of the symmetric group
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the poset of shuffles introduced by Greene in 1988 is flag-symmetric, and we describe a "local" permutation action of the symmetric group on the maximal chains which is closely related to the flag symmetric function of the poset. A key tool is provided by a new labeling of the maximal chains of a poset of shuffles, which is also used to give bijective proofs of enumerative properties originally obtained by Greene. In addition we define a monoid of multiplicative functions on all posets of shuffles and describe this monoid in terms of a new operation on power series in two variables.

Ring structure, uniform expressions and intersection homology
Although intersection homology lacks a ring structure, certain expressions (called uniform) in the intersection homology of an irreducible projective variety $X$ always give the same value, when computed via the decomposition theorem on any resolution $X_r\to X$. This paper uses uniform (and non-uniform) expressions to define what is believed to be the usual intersection homology (and its local-global variant) of a convex polytope (or a projective toric variety). Such expressions are generated by the facets, and so may lead to necessary numerical conditions on the flag vector. Most of the concepts, however, apply to more general algebraic varieties, and perhaps some other situations also.

Hodge's harmonic $p$-sets and Pontrjagin classes
This paper shows how Hodge's theory of harmonic $p$-sets (a discrete version of his theory of harmonic forms) allows a new approach to be taken to the problem of providing a combinatorial definition of the Pontrjagin classes of a compact manifold. This approach is then related to the author's definition of flag vectors for hypergraphs, and other objects constructed out of vertices and cells.

Hopf Algebras and Edge-Labeled Posets
Published in Journal of Algebra, 216 (1999), pp. 641-651 • View PublicationBIB
Given a finite graded poset with labeled Hasse diagram, we construct a quasi- symmetric generating function for (saturated) chains whose labels have fixed descents. This is a common generalization of a generating function for the flag f-vector defined by Ehrenborg and of a symmetric function associated to certain edge-labeled posets which arose in the theory of Schubert polynomials. We show this construction gives a Hopf morphism from an incidence algebra of edge-labeled posets to the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions.
