Comments on "Discrete Groups, Expanding Graphs and Invariant Measures", by Alexander Lubotzky
This document is a collection of comments that I wrote down while reading the first four chapters of the book "Discrete Groups, Expanding Graphs and Invariant Measures" by Alexander Lubotzky. Most of them are more detailed versions of proofs. Some imprecisions are pointed out and discussed, and some facts referenced in the book are proven. In the appendix we discuss topics of interest in relation to this book, which are however not necessary for its understanding. The aim of this document, which is not quite complete in that respect, is to provide, together with Lubotzky's book, a self-contained read.
Lattices from tight frames and vertex transitive graphs
We show that real tight frames that generate lattices must be rational, and use this observation to describe a construction of lattices from vertex transitive graphs. In the case of irreducible group frames, we show that the corresponding lattice is always strongly eutactic. This is the case for the more restrictive class of distance transitive graphs. We show that such lattices exist in arbitrarily large dimensions and demonstrate examples arising from some notable families of graphs. In particular, some well-known root lattices and those related to them can be recovered this way. We discuss various properties of this construction and also mention some potential applications of lattices generated by incoherent systems of vectors.

Mutation-finite quivers with real weights
We classify all mutation-finite quivers with real weights. We show that every finite mutation class not originating from an integer skew-symmetrizable matrix has a geometric realization by reflections. We also explore the structure of acyclic representatives in finite mutation classes and their relations to acute-angled simplicial domains in the corresponding reflection groups.

The exact phase diagram for a semipermeable TASEP with nonlocal boundary jumps
Published in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 52 (2019) 355001 (19pp) • View PublicationBIB
We consider a finite one-dimensional totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) with four types of particles, $\{1,0,\bar{1},*\}$, in contact with reservoirs. Particles of species $0$ can neither enter nor exit the lattice, and those of species $*$ are constrained to lie at the first and last site. Particles of species $1$ enter from the left reservoir into either the first or second site, move rightwards, and leave from either the last or penultimate site. Conversely, particles of species $\bar{1}$ enter from the right reservoir into either the last or penultimate site, move leftwards, and leave from either the first or last site. This dynamics is motivated by a natural random walk on the Weyl group of type D. We compute the exact nonequilibrium steady state distribution using a matrix ansatz building on earlier work of Arita. We then give explicit formulas for the nonequilibrium partition function as well as densities and currents of all species in the steady state, and derive the phase diagram.

Consecutive patterns in restricted permutations and involutions
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 21 no. 3 , Combinatorics (June 5, 2019) dmtcs:5175 • View PublicationBIB
It is well-known that the set $\mathbf I_n$ of involutions of the symmetric group $\mathbf S_n$ corresponds bijectively - by the Foata map $F$ - to the set of $n$-permutations that avoid the two vincular patterns $\underline{123},$ $\underline{132}.$ We consider a bijection $Γ$ from the set $\mathbf S_n$ to the set of histoires de Laguerre, namely, bicolored Motzkin paths with labelled steps, and study its properties when restricted to $\mathbf S_n(1\underline{23},1\underline{32}).$ In particular, we show that the set $\mathbf S_n(\underline{123},{132})$ of permutations that avoids the consecutive pattern $\underline{123}$ and the classical pattern $132$ corresponds via $Γ$ to the set of Motzkin paths, while its image under $F$ is the set of restricted involutions $\mathbf I_n(3412).$ We exploit these results to determine the joint distribution of the statistics des and inv over $\mathbf S_n(\underline{123},{132})$ and over $\mathbf I_n(3412).$ Moreover, we determine the distribution in these two sets of every consecutive pattern of length three. To this aim, we use a modified version of the well-known Goulden-Jacson cluster method.

Splitting groups with cubic Cayley graphs of connectivity two
Published in Algebr. Comb,(4)6,971--987, 2021 • View PublicationBIB
A group $G$ splits over a subgroup $C$ if $G$ is either a free product with amalgamation $A \underset{C}{\ast} B$ or an HNN-extension $G=A \underset{C}{\ast} (t)$. We invoke Bass-Serre theory and classify all infinite groups which admit cubic Cayley graphs of connectivity two in terms of splittings over a subgroup.

Generic Newton points and the Newton poset in Iwahori double cosets
We consider the Newton stratification on Iwahori double cosets in the loop group of a reductive group. We describe a group-theoretic condition on the generic Newton point, called cordiality, under which the Newton poset (i.e. the index set for non-empty Newton strata) is saturated and Grothendieck's conjecture on closures of the Newton strata holds. Finally, we give several large classes of Iwahori double cosets for which this condition is satisfied by studying certain paths in the associated quantum Bruhat graph.

Flip cycles in plabic graphs
Published in Sel. Math. New Ser. 26, 15 (2020) • Search Publication
Planar bicolored (plabic) graphs are combinatorial objects introduced by Postnikov to give parameterizations of the positroid cells of the totally nonnegative Grassmannian $\text{Gr}^{\geq 0}(n,k)$. Any two plabic graphs for the same positroid cell can be related by a sequence of certain moves. The flip graph has plabic graphs as vertices and has edges connecting the plabic graphs which are related by a single move. A recent result of Galashin shows that plabic graphs can be seen as cross-sections of zonotopal tilings for the cyclic zonotope $Z(n,3)$. Taking this perspective, we show that the fundamental group of the flip graph is generated by cycles of length 4, 5, and 10, and use this result to prove a related conjecture of Dylan Thurston about triple crossing diagrams. We also apply our result to make progress on an instance of the generalized Baues problem.

Regularity and inverse theorems for uniformity norms on compact abelian groups and nilmanifolds
We prove a general form of the regularity theorem for uniformity norms, and deduce an inverse theorem for these norms which holds for a class of compact nilspaces including all compact abelian groups, and also nilmanifolds; in particular we thus obtain the first non-abelian versions of such theorems. We derive these results from a general structure theorem for cubic couplings, thereby unifying these results with the Host-Kra Ergodic Structure Theorem. A unification of this kind had been propounded as a conceptual prospect by Host and Kra. Our work also provides new results on nilspaces. In particular, we obtain a new stability result for nilspace morphisms. We also strengthen a result of Gutman, Manners and Varjú, by proving that a $k$-step compact nilspace of finite rank is a toral nilspace (in particular, a connected nilmanifold) if and only if its $k$-dimensional cube set is connected. We also prove that if a morphism from a cyclic group of prime order into a compact finite-rank nilspace is sufficiently balanced (i.e. equidistributed in a certain quantitative and multidimensional sense), then the nilspace is toral. As an application of this, we obtain a new proof of a refinement of the Green-Tao-Ziegler inverse theorem.

Equivariant Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of thagomizer matroids
The equivariant Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of a matroid was introduced by Gedeon, Proudfoot, and Young. Gedeon conjectured an explicit formula for the equivariant Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of thagomizer matroids with an action of symmetric groups. In this paper, we discover a new formula for these polynomials which is related to the equivariant Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of uniform matroids. Based on our new formula, we confirm Gedeon's conjecture by the Pieri rule.

Minimal additive complements in finitely generated abelian groups
Published in Ramanujan J. 57 (2022), 215-238 • View PublicationBIB
Given two non-empty subsets $W,W'\subseteq G$ in an arbitrary abelian group $G$, $W'$ is said to be an additive complement to $W$ if $W + W'=G$ and it is minimal if no proper subset of $W'$ is a complement to $W$. The notion was introduced by Nathanson and previous work by him, Chen--Yang, Kiss--Sàndor--Yang etc. focussed on $G =\mathbb{Z}$. In the higher rank case, recent work by the authors treated a class of subsets, namely the eventually periodic sets. However, for infinite subsets, not of the above type, the question of existence or inexistence of minimal complements is open. In this article, we study subsets which are not eventually periodic. We introduce the notion of "spiked subsets" and give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of minimal complements for them. This provides a partial answer to a problem of Nathanson.

Central limit theorem for peaks of a random permutation in a fixed conjugacy class of $S_n$
Published • View PublicationBIB
The number of peaks of a random permutation is known to be asymptotically normal. We give a new proof of this and prove a central limit theorem for the distribution of peaks in a fixed conjugacy class of the symmetric group. Our technique is to apply ``analytic combinatorics'' to study a complicated but exact generating function for peaks in a given conjugacy class.
Linear degenerations of flag varieties: partial flags, defining equations, and group actions
We continue, generalize and expand our study of linear degenerations of flag varieties from [G. Cerulli Irelli, X. Fang, E. Feigin, G. Fourier, M. Reineke, Math. Z. 287 (2017), no. 1-2, 615-654]. We realize partial flag varieties as quiver Grassmannians for equi-oriented type A quivers and construct linear degenerations by varying the corresponding quiver representation. We prove that there exists the deepest flat degeneration and the deepest flat irreducible degeneration: the former is the partial analogue of the mf-degenerate flag variety and the latter coincides with the partial PBW-degenerate flag variety. We compute the generating function of the number of orbits in the flat irreducible locus and study the natural family of line bundles on the degenerations from the flat irreducible locus. We also describe explicitly the reduced scheme structure on these degenerations and conjecture that similar results hold for the whole flat locus. Finally, we prove an analogue of the Borel-Weil theorem for the flat irreducible locus.

New necessary conditions for Payley type PDS in Abelian groups
In this paper we prove that if there is a regular Paley type partial difference set in an Abelian group $G$ of order $v$, where $v=p_1^{2k_1}p_2^{2k_2}\cdots p_n^{2k_n}$, $n\ge 2$, $p_1$, $p_2$, $\cdots$, $p_n$ are distinct odd prime numbers, then for any $1 \le i \le n$, $p_i$ is congruent to 3 modulo 4 whenever $k_i$ is odd. These new necessary conditions further limit the specific order of an Abelian group $G$ in which there can exist a Paley type partial difference set. Our result is similar to a result on Abelian Hadamard (Menon) difference sets proved by Ray-Chaudhuri and Xiang in 1997.

2- and 3-Covariant Equiangular Tight Frames
Equiangular tight frames (ETFs) are configurations of vectors which are optimally geometrically spread apart and provide resolutions of the identity. Many known constructions of ETFs are group covariant, meaning they result from the action of a group on a vector, like all known constructions of symmetric, informationally complete, positive operator-valued measures. In this short article, some results characterizing the transitivity of the symmetry groups of ETFs will be presented as well as a proof that an infinite class of so-called Gabor-Steiner ETFs are roux lines, where roux lines are a generalization of doubly transitive lines.

The Brown-Erdős-Sós Conjecture in finite abelian groups
The Brown-Erdős-Sós conjecture, one of the central conjectures in extremal combinatorics, states that for any integer $m\geq 6,$ if a 3-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices contains no $m$ vertices spanning at least $m-3$ edges, then the number of edges is $o(n^2).$ We prove the conjecture for triple systems coming from finite abelian groups.

About an extension of the Davenport-Rado result to the Herzog-Schonheim conjecture for free groups
Published in Advances in Group theory and applications 2021 • Search Publication
Let $G$ be a group and $H_1$,...,$H_s$ be subgroups of $G$ of indices $d_1$,...,$d_s$ respectively. In 1974, M. Herzog and J. Schönheim conjectured that if $\{H_iα_i\}_{i=1}^{i=s}$, $α_i\in G$, is a coset partition of $G$, then $d_1$,..,$d_s$ cannot be distinct. We consider the Herzog-Schönheim conjecture for free groups of finite rank and propose a new approach, based on an extension of the Davenport-Rado result for $G=\mathbb{Z}$.

Cutoff on Ramanujan complexes and classical groups
Published in Commentarii Mathematici Helvetici, 97(3):431-456, 2022 • View PublicationBIB
The total-variation cutoff phenomenon has been conjectured to hold for simple random walk on all transitive expanders. However, very little is actually known regarding this conjecture, and cutoff on sparse graphs in general. In this paper we establish total-variation cutoff for simple random walk on Ramanujan complexes of type $\widetilde{A}_{d}$ $(d\geq1)$. As a result, we obtain explicit generators for the finite classical groups $\mathrm{PGL}_{n}(\mathbb{F}_{q})$ for which the associated Cayley graphs exhibit total-variation cutoff.

Steiner systems $S(2, 4, \frac{3^m-1}{2})$ and $2$-designs from ternary linear codes of length $\frac{3^m-1}{2}$
Coding theory and $t$-designs have close connections and interesting interplay. In this paper, we first introduce a class of ternary linear codes and study their parameters. We then focus on their three-weight subcodes with a special weight distribution. We determine the weight distributions of some shortened codes and punctured codes of these three-weight subcodes. These shortened and punctured codes contain some codes that have the same parameters as the best ternary linear codes known in the database maintained by Markus Grassl at http://www.codetables.de/. These three-weight subcodes with a special weight distribution do not satisfy the conditions of the Assmus-Mattson theorem and do not admit $2$-transitive or $2$-homogeneous automorphism groups in general. By employing the theory of projective geometries and projective generalized Reed-Muller codes, we prove that they still hold $2$-designs. We also determine the parameters of these $2$-designs. This paper mainly confirms some recent conjectures of Ding and Li regarding Steiner systems and $2$-designs from a special type of ternary projective codes.
