Latin hypercubes realizing integer partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
For an integer partition $h_1 + \dots + h_n = N$, a 2-realization of this partition is a latin square of order $N$ with disjoint subsquares of orders $h_1,\dots,h_n$. The existence of 2-realizations is a partially solved problem posed by Fuchs. In this paper, we extend Fuchs' problem to $m$-ary quasigroups, or, equivalently, latin hypercubes. We construct latin cubes for some partitions with at most two distinct parts and highlight how the new problem is related to the original.
Hook lengths in self-conjugate partitions
In 2010, G.-N. Han obtained the generating function for the number of size $t$ hooks among integer partitions. Here we obtain these generating functions for self-conjugate partitions, which are particularly elegant for even $t$. If $n_t(λ)$ is the number of size $t$ hooks in a partition $λ,$ then for even $t$ we have $$\sum_{λ\in \mathcal{SC}} x^{n_t(λ)} q^{\vertλ\vert} = (-q;q^2)_{\infty} \cdot ((1-x^2)q^{2t};q^{2t})_{\infty}^{\frac{t}2}. $$ As a consequence, if $a_t^*(n)$ is the number of such hooks among the self-conjugate partitions of $n,$ then for even $t$ we obtain the simple formula $$ a_t^*(n)=t\sum_{j\geq 1} q^*(n-2tj), $$ where $q^*(m)$ is the number of partitions of $m$ into distinct odd parts. As a corollary, we find that $t\mid a_t^*(n),$ which confirms a conjecture of Ballantine, Burson, Craig, Folsom, and Wen.

Refining Blecher and Knopfmacher's Integer Partition Fixed Points
Published in Enumer. Combin. Appl. 4:4 (2024) S2R26 • View PublicationBIB
Recently, Blecher and Knopfmacher explored the notion of fixed points in integer partitions. Here, we distinguish partitions with a fixed point by which value is fixed and analyze the resulting triangle of integers. In particular, we confirm various identities for diagonal sums, row sums, and antidiagonal sums (which are finite for this triangle) and establish a four-term recurrence for triangle entries analogous to Pascal's lemma for the triangle of binomial coefficients. The partition statistics crank and mex arise. All proofs are combinatorial.
A Local Limit Theorem for Integer Partitions into Small Powers
The investigation of partitions of integers plays an important role in combinatorics and number theory. Among the many variations, partitions into powers $0<α<1$ were of recent interest. In the present paper we want to extend our considerations of the length of a random partition by providing a local limit theorem.

Optimal transport for some symmetric, multidimensional integer partitions
A result of Hohloch links the theory of integer partitions with the Monge formulation of the optimal transport problem, giving the optimal transport map between (Young diagrams of) integer partitions and their corresponding symmetric partitions. Our aim is to extend Hohloch's result to the higher dimensional case. In doing so, we show the Kantorovich formulation of the optimal transport problem provides the tool to study the matching of higher dimensional partitions with their corresponding symmetric partitions.
The Six-Vertex Model with a Non-Standard Boundary Condition
We consider the enumeration of states in the Brubaker-Bump-Friedberg six-vertex model, whose boundary conditions are determined by an integer partition. In general, we find the number of states is a polynomial in the largest part of the partition. By explicating this technique, we also enumerate the states completely for hook shapes and staircases.

Multimodal sequences and their generating functions
We define integer multimodal sequences, which are generalizations of unimodal sequences having multiple local peaks of equal size. The generating functions for multimodal sequences represent novel types of $q$-series that combine generating functions for both integer partitions and integer compositions. We prove a bijection between multimodal sequences of equal size (sum), and show that multimodal generating functions become finite series at roots of unity like the ``strange'' function of Kontsevich, quantum modular forms, and other examples of this phenomenon in the $q$-series literature.

A generalization of immanants based on partition algebra characters
Published in Can. Math. Bull. 67 (2024) 1001-1010 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a generalization of immanants of matrices, using partition algebra characters in place of symmetric group characters. We prove that our immanant-like function on square matrices, which we refer to as the recombinant, agrees with the usual definition for immanants for the special case whereby the vacillating tableaux associated with the irreducible characters correspond, according to the Bratteli diagram for partition algebra representations, to the integer partition shapes for symmetric group characters. In contrast to previously studied variants and generalizations of immanants, as in Temperley-Lieb immanants and $f$-immanants, the sum that we use to define recombinants is indexed by a full set of partition diagrams, as opposed to permutations.
Multivariate Dirichlet Moments and a Polychromatic Ewens Sampling Formula
We present an elementary non-recursive formula for the multivariate moments of the Dirichlet distribution on the standard simplex, in terms of the pattern inventory of the moments' exponents. We obtain analog formulas for the multivariate moments of the Dirichlet-Ferguson and Gamma measures. We further introduce a polychromatic analogue of Ewens sampling formula on colored integer partitions, discuss its relation with suitable extensions of Hoppe's urn model and of the Chinese restaurant process, and prove that it satisfies an adapted notion of consistency in the sense of Kingman.

A bijective proof of an identity of Berkovich and Uncu
The BG-rank BG($π$) of an integer partition $π$ is defined as $$\text{BG}(π) := i-j$$ where $i$ is the number of odd-indexed odd parts and $j$ is the number of even-indexed odd parts of $π$. In a recent work, Fu and Tang ask for a direct combinatorial proof of the following identity of Berkovich and Uncu $$B_{2N+ν}(k,q)=q^{2k^2-k}\left[\begin{matrix}2N+ν\\N+k\end{matrix}\right]_{q^2}$$ for any integer $k$ and non-negative integer $N$ where $ν\in \{0,1\}$, $B_N(k,q)$ is the generating function for partitions into distinct parts less than or equal to $N$ with BG-rank equal to $k$ and $\left[\begin{matrix}a+b\\b\end{matrix}\right]_q$ is a Gaussian binomial coefficient. In this paper, we provide a bijective proof of Berkovich and Uncu's identity along the lines of Vandervelde and Fu and Tang's idea.

Diagonal operators, $q$-Whittaker functions and rook theory
We discuss the problem posed by Bender, Coley, Robbins and Rumsey of enumerating the number of subspaces which have a given profile with respect to a linear operator over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. We solve this problem in the case where the operator is diagonalizable. The solution leads us to a new class of polynomials $b_{μν}(q)$ indexed by pairs of integer partitions. These polynomials have several interesting specializations and can be expressed as positive sums over semistandard tableaux. We present a new correspondence between set partitions and semistandard tableaux. A close analysis of this correspondence reveals the existence of several new set partition statistics which generate the polynomials $b_{μν}(q)$; each such statistic arises from a Mahonian statistic on multiset permutations. The polynomials $b_{μν}(q)$ are also given a description in terms of coefficients in the monomial expansion of $q$-Whittaker symmetric functions which are specializations of Macdonald polynomials. We express the Touchard--Riordan generating polynomial for chord diagrams by number of crossings in terms of $q$-Whittaker functions. We also introduce a class of $q$-Stirling numbers defined in terms of the polynomials $b_{μν}(q)$ and present connections with $q$-rook theory in the spirit of Garsia and Remmel.

Asymptotics of Reciprocal Supernorm Partition Statistics
We consider two multiplicative statistics on the set of integer partitions: the norm of a partition, which is the product of its parts, and the supernorm of a partition, which is the product of the prime numbers $p_i$ indexed by its parts $i$. We introduce and study new statistics that are sums of reciprocals of supernorms on three statistical ensembles of partitions, labelled by their size $|λ|=n$, their perimeter equaling $n$, and their largest part equaling $n$. We show that the cumulative statistics of the reciprocal supernorm for each of the three ensembles are asymptotic to $e^γ \log n$ as $n \to \infty$.
Combinatorial Identities for Vacillating Tableaux
Vacillating tableaux are sequences of integer partitions that satisfy specific conditions. The concept of vacillating tableaux stems from the representation theory of the partition algebra and the combinatorial theory of crossings and nestings of matchings and set partitions. In this paper, we further investigate the enumeration of vacillating tableaux and derive multiple combinatorial identities and integer sequences relating to the number of vacillating tableaux, simplified vacillating tableaux, and limiting vacillating tableaux.

Graph-like Scheduling Problems and Property B
Breuer and Klivans defined a diverse class of scheduling problems in terms of Boolean formulas with atomic clauses that are inequalities. We consider what we call graph-like scheduling problems. These are Boolean formulas that are conjunctions of disjunctions of atomic clauses $(x_i \neq x_j)$. These problems generalize proper coloring in graphs and hypergraphs. We focus on the existence of a solution with all $x_i$ taking the value of $0$ or $1$ (i.e. problems analogous to the bipartite case). When a graph-like scheduling problem has such a solution, we say it has property B just as is done for $2$-colorable hypergraphs. We define the notion of a $λ$-uniform graph-like scheduling problem for any integer partition $λ$. Some bounds are attained for the size of the smallest $λ$-uniform graph-like scheduling problems without property B. We make use of both random and constructive methods to obtain bounds. Just as in the case of hypergraphs finding tight bounds remains an open problem.

Bulgarian Solitaire: A new representation for depth generating functions
Bulgarian Solitaire is an interesting self-map on the set of integer partitions of a fixed number $n$. As a finite dynamical system, its long-term behavior is well-understood, having recurrent orbits parametrized by necklaces of beads with two colors black $B$ and white $W$. However, the behavior of the transient elements within each orbit is much less understood. Recent work of Pham considered the orbits corresponding to a family of necklaces $P^\ell$ that are concatenations of $\ell$ copies of a fixed primitive necklace $P$. She proved striking limiting behavior as $\ell$ goes to infinity: the level statistic for the orbit, counting how many steps it takes a partition to reach the recurrent cycle, has a limiting distribution, whose generating function $H_p(x)$ is rational. Pham also conjectured that $H_P(x), H_{P^*}(x)$ share the same denominator whenever $P^*$ is obtained from $P$ by reading it backwards and swapping $B$ for $W$. Here we introduce a new representation of Bulgarian Solitaire that is convenient for the study of these generating functions. We then use it to prove two instances of Pham's conjecture, showing that $$H_{BWBWB \cdots WB}(x)=H_{WBWBW \cdots BW}(x)$$ and that $H_{BWWW\cdots W}(x),H_{WBBB\cdots B}(x)$ share the same denominator.

Component order edge connectivity, vertex degrees, and integer partitions
Given a finite, simple graph $G$, the $k$-component order edge connectivity of $G$ is the minimum number of edges whose removal results in a subgraph for which every component has order at most $k-1$. In general, determining the $k$-component order edge connectivity of a graph is NP-hard. We determine conditions on the vertex degrees of $G$ that can be used to imply a lower bound on the $k$-component order edge connectivity of $G$. We will discuss the process for generating such conditions for a lower bound of 1 or 2, and we explore how the complexity increases when the desired lower bound is 3 or more. In the process, we prove some related results about integer partitions.

On the distribution of the norm of partitions
The norm of an integer partition is defined as the product of its parts. This statistic was recently introduced by Schneider in connection to partition zeta functions. In this note, we use the method of moments to study the distribution of the norm under the uniform probability measure on partitions of $n$ as $n \to \infty$. We use singularity analysis to prove asymptotics for the moments and show as a result that the norm lacks a non-trivial limiting distribution on $[0,\infty)$.

Multicritical Schur measures and higher-order analogues of the Tracy-Widom distribution
Published in Math. Phys. Anal. Geom. 27:2 (2024) • View PublicationBIB
We introduce multicritical Schur measures, which are probability laws on integer partitions which give rise to non-generic fluctuations at their edge. They are in the same universality classes as one-dimensional momentum-space models of free fermions in flat confining potentials, studied by Le Doussal, Majumdar and Schehr. These universality classes involve critical exponents of the form 1/(2m+1), with m a positive integer, and asymptotic distributions given by Fredholm determinants constructed from higher order Airy kernels, extending the generic Tracy-Widom GUE distribution recovered for m=1. We also compute limit shapes for the multicritical Schur measures, discuss the finite temperature setting, and exhibit an exact mapping to the multicritical unitary matrix models previously encountered by Periwal and Shevitz.

Large deviations for the $q$-deformed polynuclear growth
Published in Ann. Probab. 53 (4), 1223-1286, (July 2025) • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study large time large deviations for the height function $\mathfrak{h}(x,t)$ of the $q$-deformed polynuclear growth introduced in ABW22 [arXiv:2108.06018]. We show that the upper-tail deviations have speed $t$ and derive an explicit formula for the rate function $Φ_+(μ)$. On the other hand, we show that the lower-tail deviations have speed $t^2$ and express the corresponding rate function $Φ_-(μ)$ in terms of a variational problem. Our analysis relies on distributional identities between the height function $\mathfrak{h}$ and two important measures on the set of integer partitions: the Poissonized Plancherel measure and the cylindric Plancherel measure. Following a scheme developed in DT21 [arXiv:1910.09271], we analyze a Fredholm determinant representation for the $q$-Laplace transform of $\mathfrak{h}(x,t)$, from which we extract exact Lyapunov exponents and through inversion the upper-tail rate function $Φ_+$. The proof of the lower-tail large deviation principle is more subtle and requires several novel ideas which combine classical asymptotic results for the Plancherel measure and log-concavity properties of Schur polynomials. Techniques we develop to characterize the lower-tail are rather flexible and have the potential to generalize to other solvable growth models.

New Infinite Families of Congruences Modulo Powers of 2 for 2--Regular Partitions with Designated Summands
Published in INTEGERS 24 (2024), Article A16 • Search Publication
In 2002, Andrews, Lewis, and Lovejoy introduced the combinatorial objects which they called {\it partitions with designated summands}. These are built by taking unrestricted integer partitions and designating exactly one of each occurrence of a part. In that same work, Andrews, Lewis, and Lovejoy also studied such partitions wherein all parts must be odd. Recently, Herden, Sepanski, Stanfill, Hammon, Henningsen, Ickes, and Ruiz proved a number of Ramanujan--like congruences for the function $PD_2(n)$ which counts the number of partitions of weight $n$ with designated summands wherein all parts must be odd. In this work, we prove some of the results conjectured by Herden, et. al. by proving the following two infinite families of congruences satisfied by $PD_2(n)$: For all $α\geq 0$ and $n\geq 0,$ \begin{eqnarray*} PD_2(2^α(4n+3)) &\equiv & 0 \pmod{4} \ \ \ \ \ {\textrm and} \\ PD_2(2^α(8n+7)) &\equiv & 0 \pmod{8}. \end{eqnarray*} All of the proof techniques used herein are elementary, relying on classical $q$--series identities and generating function manipulations.
