Integer partitions detect the primes
We show that integer partitions, the fundamental building blocks in additive number theory, detect prime numbers in an unexpected way. Answering a question of Schneider, we show that the primes are the solutions to special equations in partition functions. For example, an integer $n\geq 2$ is prime if and only if $$ (3n^3 - 13n^2 + 18n - 8)M_1(n) + (12n^2 - 120n + 212)M_2(n) -960M_3(n) = 0, $$ where the $M_a(n)$ are MacMahon's well-studied partition functions. More generally, for "MacMahonesque" partition functions $M_{\vec{a}}(n),$ we prove that there are infinitely many such prime detecting equations with constant coefficients, such as $$ 80M_{(1,1,1)}(n)-12M_{(2,0,1)}(n)+12M_{(2,1,0)}(n)+\dots-12M_{(1,3)}(n)-39M_{(3,1)}(n)=0. $$

Billiard Partitions, Fibonacci Sequences, SIP Classes, and Quivers
Starting from billiard partitions which arose recently in the description of periodic trajectories of ellipsoidal billiards in $d$-dimensional Euclidean space, we introduce a new type of separable integer partition classes, called type B. We study the numbers of basis partitions with $d$ parts and relate them to the Fibonacci sequence and its natural generalizations. Remarkably, the generating series of basis partitions can be related to the quiver generating series of symmetric quivers corresponding to the framed unknot via knots-quivers correspondence, and to the count of Schröder paths.

An extended generalization of RSK via the combinatorics of type $A$ quiver representations
The classical Robinson--Schensted--Knuth correspondence is a bijection from nonnegative integer matrices to pairs of semi-standard Young tableaux. Based on the work of, among others, Burge, Hillman, Grassl, Knuth and Gansner, it is known that a version of this correspondence gives, for any nonzero integer partition $λ$, a bijection from arbitrary fillings of $λ$ to reverse plane partitions of shape $λ$, via Greene--Kleitman invariants. By bringing out the combinatorial aspects of our recent results on quiver representations, we construct a family of bijections from fillings of $λ$ to reverse plane partitions of shape $λ$ parametrized by a choice of Coxeter element in a suitable symmetric group. We recover the above version of the Robinson--Schensted--Knuth correspondence for a particular choice of Coxeter element depending on $λ$.

A bijection proof of Andrews-Merca integer partition theorem
Andrews and Merca [J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 203 (2024), Art. 105849] recently obtained two interesting results on the sum of the parts with the same parity in the partitions of $n$ (the modulo $2$ case), the proof of which relies on generating functions. Motivated by Andrews and Merca's results, we define six statistics related to the partitions of $n$ and show that the two triples of the six statistics are equidistributed. From this equidistributed result, we derive modulo $m$ extensions of Andrews and Merca's results for all integers $m\ge 2$. The proof of the main result is based on a general bijection on the set of partitions of $n$.

Macdonald Identities, Weyl-Kac Denominator Formulas and Affine Grassmannian Elements
Published in SIGMA 21 (2025), 023, 45 pages • View PublicationBIB
The Nekrasov-Okounkov formula gives an expression for the Fourier coefficients of the Euler functions as a sum of hook length products. This formula can be deduced from a specialization in a renormalization of the affine type $A$ Weyl denominator formula and the use of a polynomial argument. In this paper, we rephrase the renormalized Weyl-Kac denominator formula as a sum parametrized by affine Grassmannian elements. This naturally gives rise to the (dual) atomic length of the root system considered introduced by Chapelier-Laget and Gerber. We then provide an interpretation of this atomic length as the cardinality of some subsets of $n$-core partitions by using foldings of affine Dynkin diagrams. This interpretation does not permit the direct use of a polynomial argument for all affine root systems. We show that this obstruction can be overcome by computing the atomic length of certain families of integer partitions. Then we show how hook-length statistics on these partitions are connected with the Coxeter length on affine Grassmannian elements and Nekrasov-Okounkov type formulas.

On the biases and asymptotics of partitions with finite choices of parts
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, 2026 • View PublicationBIB
Biases in integer partitions have been studied recently. For three disjoint subsets $R,S,I$ of positive integers, let $p_{RSI}(n)$ be the number of partitions of $n$ with parts from $R\cup S\cup I$ and $p_{R>S,I}(n)$ be the number of such partitions with more parts from $R$ than that from $S$. In this paper, in the case that $R,S,I$ are finite we obtain a concrete formula of the asymptotic ratio of $p_{R>S,I}(n)$ to $p_{RSI}(n)$. We also propose a conjecture in the case that $R,S$ are certain infinite arithmetic progressions.
Remarks on the conjectures of Capparelli, Meurman, Primc and Primc
In a sequence of two papers, S. Capparelli, A. Meurman, A. Primc, M. Primc (CMPP) and then M. Primc put forth three remarkable sets of conjectures, stating that the generating functions of coloured integer partition in which the parts satisfy restrictions on the multiplicities admit simple infinite product forms. While CMPP related one set of conjectures to the principally specialised characters of standard modules for the affine Lie algebra $\mathrm{C}_n^{(1)}$, finding a Lie-algebraic interpretation for the remaining two sets remained an open problem. In this paper, we use the work of Griffin, Ono and the fourth author on Rogers-Ramanujan identities for affine Lie algebras to solve this problem, relating the remaining two sets of conjectures to non-standard specialisations of standard modules for $\mathrm{A}_{2n}^{(2)}$ and $\mathrm{D}_{n+1}^{(2)}$. We also use their work to formulate conjectures for the bivariate generating function of one-parameter families of CMPP partitions in terms of Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions. We make a detailed study of several further aspects of CMPP partitions, obtaining (i) functional equations for bivariate generating functions which generalise the well-known Rogers-Selberg equations, (ii) a partial level-rank duality in the $\mathrm{A}_{2n}^{(2)}$ case, and (iii) (conjectural) identities of the Rogers-Ramanujan type for $\mathrm{D}_3^{(2)}$.

PySymmPol: Symmetric Polynomials in Python
Published in Journal of Open Source Software, 9(97), 6724, 2024 • View PublicationBIB
PySymmPol is a Python package designed for efficient manipulation of symmetric polynomials. It provides functionalities for working with various types of symmetric polynomials, including elementary, homogeneous, monomial symmetric, (skew-) Schur, and Hall-Littlewood polynomials. In addition to polynomial operations, PySymmPol offers tools to explore key properties of integer partitions and Young diagrams, such as transposition, Frobenius coordinates, characters of symmetric groups and others.

We give a complete characterisation of the single and double arrow relations of the standard context $K(L_n)$ of the lattice $L_n$ of partitions of any positive integer $n$ under the dominance order, thereby addressing an open question of Ganter, 2022.

Generators for the Algebra of Symmetric Functions
The algebra of symmetric functions contains several interesting families of symmetric functions indexed by integer partitions or skew partitions. Given a sequence $\{u_n\}$ of symmetric functions taken from one of these families such that $u_n$ is homogeneous of degree $n$, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the sequence to form a system of algebraically independent generators for the algebra of symmetric functions.

Combinatorial approach to Andrews-Gordon and Bressoud type identities
We provide combinatorial tools inspired by work of Warnaar to give combinatorial interpretations of the sum sides of the Andrews-Gordon and Bressoud identities. More precisely, we give an explicit weight- and length-preserving bijection between sets related to integer partitions, which provides these interpretations. In passing, we discover the $q$-series version of an identity of Kurşungöz, similar to the Bressoud identity but with opposite parity conditions, which we prove combinatorially using the classical Bressoud identity and our bijection. We also use this bijection to prove combinatorially many identities, some known and other new, of the Andrews-Gordon and Bressoud type.

Trees with flowers: A catalog of integer partition and integer composition trees with their asymptotic analysis
We present families of combinatorial classes described as trees with nodes that can carry one of two types of "flowers": integer partitions or integer compositions. Two parameters on the flowers of trees will be considered: the number of "petals" in all the flowers (petals' weight) and the number of edges in the petals of all the flowers (flowers' weight). We give explicit expressions of their generating functions and deduce general formulas for the asymptotic growth of their coefficients and the expectations of their concentrated distributions.
q-Parikh Matrices and q-deformed binomial coefficients of words
We have introduced a q-deformation, i.e., a polynomial in q with natural coefficients, of the binomial coefficient of two finite words u and v counting the number of occurrences of v as a subword of u. In this paper, we examine the q-deformation of Parikh matrices as introduced by Eğecioğlu in 2004. Many classical results concerning Parikh matrices generalize to this new framework: Our first important observation is that the elements of such a matrix are in fact q-deformations of binomial coefficients of words. We also study their inverses and as an application, we obtain new identities about q-binomials. For a finite word z and for the sequence $(p_n)_{n\ge 0}$ of prefixes of an infinite word, we show that the polynomial sequence $\binom{p_n}{z}_q$ converges to a formal series. We present links with additive number theory and k-regular sequences. In the case of a periodic word $u^ω$, we generalize a result of Salomaa: the sequence $\binom{u^n}{z}_q$ satisfies a linear recurrence relation with polynomial coefficients. Related to the theory of integer partition, we describe the growth and the zero set of the coefficients of the series associated with $u^ω$. Finally, we show that the minors of a q-Parikh matrix are polynomials with natural coefficients and consider a generalization of Cauchy's inequality. We also compare q-Parikh matrices associated with an arbitrary word with those associated with a canonical word $12\cdots k$ made of pairwise distinct symbols.

The generalizations of Hamiltonian in oriented graphs
An oriented graph is an orientation of a simple graph. In 2009, Keevash, Kühn and Osthus proved that every sufficiently large oriented graph $D$ of order $n$ with $(3n-4)/8$ is Hamiltonian. Later, Kelly, Kühn and Osthus showed that it is also pancyclic. Inspired by this, we show that for any given constant $t$ and positive integer partition $n = n_1 + \cdots + n_t$, if $D$ is an oriented graph on $n$ vertices with minimum semidegree at least $(3n-4)/8$, then it contains $t$ disjoint cycles of lengths $n_1,\ldots , n_t$. Also, we determine the bounds on the semidegree of sufficiently large oriented graphs that are strongly Hamiltonian-connected, $k$-ordered Hamiltonian and spanning $k$-linked.

Palindrome Partitions and the Calkin-Wilf Tree
There is a well-known bijection between finite binary sequences and integer partitions. Sequences of length r correspond to partitions of perimeter r+1. Motivated by work on rational numbers in the Calkin-Wilf tree, we classify partitions whose corresponding binary sequence is a palindrome. We give a generating function that counts these partitions, and describe how to efficiently generate all of them. Atypically for partitions generating functions, we find an unusual significance to prime degrees. Specifically, we prove there are nontrivial palindrome partitions of n except when n=3 or n+1 is prime. We find an interesting new "branching diagram" for partitions, similar to Young's lattice, with an action of the Klein four group corresponding to natural operations on the binary sequences.

q-power symmetric functions and q-exponential formula
Let $λ=\left( λ_{1},λ_{2},...,λ_{r}\right) $ be an integer partition, and $\left[p_{λ}\right] $ the $q$-analog of the symmetric power function $%p_{λ}$. This $q$-analogue has been defined as a special case, in the author's previous article: "A $q$-analog of certain symmetric functions and one of its specializations". Here, we prove that a large part of the classical relations between $p_{λ}$, on one hand, and the elementary and complete symmetric functions $e_{n}$ and $h_{n}$, on the other hand, have $q$-analogues with $\left[ p_{λ}\right] $. In particular, the generating functions $E\left( t\right) =\sum\nolimits_{n\geq 0}e_{n}t^{n}$ and $H\left( t\right) =\sum\nolimits_{n\geq 0}h_{n}t^{n}$ are expressed in terms of $\left[ p_{n}\right] $, using Gessel's $q$-exponential formula and a variant of it. A factorization of these generating functions into infinite $q$-products, which has no classical counterpart, is established. By specializing these results, we show that the $q$-binomial theorem is a special case of these infinite $q$-products. We also obtain new formulas for the tree inversions enumerators and for certain $q$-orthogonal polynomials, detailing the case of dicrete $q$-Hermite polynomials.
Partitions with fixed points in the sequence of first-column hook lengths
Published in Ann. Comb. (2024 online first) • View PublicationBIB
Recently, Blecher and Knopfmacher applied the notion of fixed points to integer partitions. This has already been generalized and refined in various ways such as $h$-fixed points for an integer parameter $h$ by Hopkins and Sellers. Here, we consider the sequence of first column hook lengths in the Young diagram of a partition and corresponding fixed hooks. We enumerate these, using both generating function and combinatorial proofs, and find that they match occurrences of part sizes equal to their multiplicity. We establish connections to work of Andrews and Merca on truncations of the pentagonal number theorem and classes of partitions partially characterized by certain minimal excluded parts (mex).

A composition method for neat formulas of chromatic symmetric functions
We develop a composition method to unearth positive $e_I$-expansions of chromatic symmetric functions $X_G$, where the subscript $I$ stands for compositions rather than integer partitions. Using this method, we derive positive and neat $e_I$-expansions for the chromatic symmetric functions of tadpoles, barbells and generalized bulls, and establish the $e$-positivity of hats. We also obtain a compact ribbon Schur analog for the chromatic symmetric function of cycles.
Bialternant formula for Schur polynomials with repeating variables

We consider polynomials of the form $\operatorname{s}_λ(y_1^{[\varkappa_1]},\ldots,y_n^{[\varkappa_n]})$, where $λ$ is an integer partition, $\operatorname{s}_λ$ is the Schur polynomial associated to $λ$, and $y_j^{[\varkappa_j]}$ denotes $y_j$ repeated $\varkappa_j$ times. We represent $\operatorname{s}_λ(y_1^{[\varkappa_1]},\ldots,y_n^{[\varkappa_n]})$ as a quotient whose the denominator is the determinant of the confluent Vandermonde matrix, and the numerator is the determinant of some generalized confluent Vandermonde matrix. We give three algebraic proofs of this formula.

On general approach to Bessenrodt-Ono type inequalities and log-concavity property
Published • View PublicationBIB
In recent literature concerning integer partitions one can find many results related to both the Bessenrodt-Ono type inequalities and log-concavity property. In this note we offer some general approach to this type of problems. More precisely, we prove that under some mild conditions on an increasing function $F$ of at most exponential growth satisfying the condition $F(\mathbb{N})\subset \mathbb{R}_{+}$, we have $F(a)F(b)>F(a+b)$ for sufficiently large positive integers $a, b$. Moreover, we show that if the sequence $(F(n))_{n\geq n_{0}}$ is log-concave and $\limsup_{n\rightarrow +\infty}F(n+n_{0})/F(n)<F(n_{0})$, then $F$ satisfies the Bessenrodt-Ono type inequality.
