Loop-erased partitioning of a network: monotonicities & analysis of cycle-free graphs
We consider random partitions of the vertex set of a given finite graph that can be sampled by means of loop-erased random walks stopped at a random exponential time of parameter $q>0$. The related random blocks tend to cluster nodes visited by the random walk on time scale $1/q$. This random partitioning is induced by a measure of rooted spanning forest of the graph, which generalizes the classical uniform spanning tree measure and which can be obtained as a zero-limit of FK-percolation with an external cemetery state. Some general properties of this rooted forest measure and related determinantal observables, along with a number of applications in data analysis have been recently explored. We are here mainly interested in the structure the emergent partitioning, referred to as loop-erased partitioning, as the scale parameter $q$ varies. We first present two general results shedding light on subtle monoticity properties in $q$ of these rooted forest and loop-erased partitioning measures. The first theorem characterizes monotone events in $q$ by deriving a Russo-like formula. Our second general result concerns two-point correlations defined by the probability that two vertices do not belong to the same block of the partitioning. It states that, on undirected graphs, these correlation functions are increasing in $q$. We then explore other types of results aiming at understanding the emerging asymptotic clusters on simple growing graph models, as $q$ scales with the graph size. Some first results in this direction have been investigated in the recent [arXiv:1906.03858] on dense geometries. Here we look at very sparse graphs. We offer a detailed analysis of the resulting partitioning on line segments and we look at trees and other tree-like geometries, without and with implanted modular structures. For the latter, we characterize the asymptotic detection of these implanted modules.
Some properties of the parking function poset
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 29(4) (2022), Article P4.42 • View PublicationBIB
In 1980, Edelman defined a poset on objects called the noncrossing 2-partitions. They are closely related with noncrossing partitions and parking functions. To some extent, his definition is a precursor of the parking space theory, in the framework of finite reflection groups. We present some enumerative and topological properties of this poset. In particular, we get a formula counting certain chains, that encompasses formulas for Whitney numbers (of both kinds). We prove shellability of the poset, and compute its homology as a representation of the symmetric group. We moreover link it with two well-known polytopes : the associahedron and the permutohedron.

Chain decompositions of q,t-Catalan numbers: tail extensions and flagpole partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
This article is part of an ongoing investigation of the combinatorics of $q,t$-Catalan numbers $\textrm{Cat}_n(q,t)$. We develop a structure theory for integer partitions based on the partition statistics dinv, deficit, and minimum triangle height. Our goal is to decompose the infinite set of partitions of deficit $k$ into a disjoint union of chains $\mathcal{C}_μ$ indexed by partitions of size $k$. Among other structural properties, these chains can be paired to give refinements of the famous symmetry property $\textrm{Cat}_n(q,t)=\textrm{Cat}_n(t,q)$. Previously, we introduced a map that builds the tail part of each chain $\mathcal{C}_μ$. Our first main contribution here is to extend this map to construct larger second-order tails for each chain. Second, we introduce new classes of partitions called flagpole partitions and generalized flagpole partitions. Third, we describe a recursive construction for building the chain $\mathcal{C}_μ$ for a (generalized) flagpole partition $μ$, assuming that the chains indexed by certain specific smaller partitions (depending on $μ$) are already known. We also give some enumerative and asymptotic results for flagpole partitions and their generalized versions.

Tri-Partitions and Bases of an Ordered Complex
Published in Discrete and Computational Geometry (DCG) 64 (2020), 759-775 • View PublicationBIB
Generalizing the decomposition of a connected planar graph into a tree and a dual tree, we prove a combinatorial analog of the classic Helmholz-Hodge decomposition of a smooth vector field. Specifically, we show that for every polyhedral complex, $K$, and every dimension, $p$, there is a partition of the set of $p$-cells into a maximal $p$-tree, a maximal $p$-cotree, and a collection of $p$-cells whose cardinality is the $p$-th Betti number of $K$. Given an ordering of the $p$-cells, this tri-partition is unique, and it can be computed by a matrix reduction algorithm that also constructs canonical bases of cycle and boundary groups.

The Ising antiferromagnet in the replica symmetric phase
Published • View PublicationBIB
Partition functions are an important research object in combinatorics and mathematical physics [Barvinok, 2016]. In this work, we consider the partition function of the Ising antiferromagnet on random regular graphs and characterize its limiting distribution in the replica symmetric phase up to the Kesten-Stigum bound. Our proof relies on a careful execution of the method of moments, spatial mixing arguments and small subgraph conditioning.

Combinatorial generation via permutation languages. III. Rectangulations
Published • View PublicationBIB
A generic rectangulation is a partition of a rectangle into finitely many interior-disjoint rectangles, such that no four rectangles meet in a point. In this work we present a versatile algorithmic framework for exhaustively generating a large variety of different classes of generic rectangulations. Our algorithms work under very mild assumptions, and apply to a large number of rectangulation classes known from the literature, such as generic rectangulations, diagonal rectangulations, 1-sided/area-universal, block-aligned rectangulations, and their guillotine variants, including aspect-ratio-universal rectangulations. They also apply to classes of rectangulations that are characterized by avoiding certain patterns, and in this work we initiate a systematic investigation of pattern avoidance in rectangulations. Our generation algorithms are efficient, in some cases even loopless or constant amortized time, i.e., each new rectangulation is generated in constant time in the worst case or on average, respectively. Moreover, the Gray codes we obtain are cyclic, and sometimes provably optimal, in the sense that they correspond to a Hamilton cycle on the skeleton of an underlying polytope. These results are obtained by encoding rectangulations as permutations, and by applying our recently developed permutation language framework.

Decomposing and colouring some locally semicomplete digraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A digraph is semicomplete if any two vertices are connected by at least one arc and is locally semicomplete if the out-neighbourhood and the in-neighbourhood of any vertex induce a semicomplete digraph. In this paper we study various subclasses of locally semicomplete digraphs for which we give structural decomposition theorems. As a consequence we obtain several applications, among which an answer to a conjecture of Naserasr and the first and third authors: if an oriented graph is such that the out-neighbourhood of every vertex induces a transitive tournament, then one can partition its vertex set into two acyclic digraphs.

Sampling from the low temperature Potts model through a Markov chain on flows
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we consider the algorithmic problem of sampling from the Potts model and computing its partition function at low temperatures. Instead of directly working with spin configurations, we consider the equivalent problem of sampling flows. We show, using path coupling, that a simple and natural Markov chain on the set of flows is rapidly mixing. As a result we find a $δ$-approximate sampling algorithm for the Potts model at low enough temperatures, whose running time is bounded by $O(m^2\log(mδ^{-1}))$ for graphs $G$ with $m$ edges.
Iterating the RSK Bijection
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the dynamics of the well-known RSK bijection on permutations when iterated on various reading words of the recording tableau. In the setting of the ordinary (row) reading word, we show that there is exactly one fixed point per partition shape, and that it is always reached within two steps from any starting permutation. We also consider the modified dynamical systems formed by iterating RSK on the column reading word and the reversed reading word of the recording tableau. We show that the column reading word gives similar dynamics to the row reading word. On the other hand, for the reversed reading word, we always reach either a 2-cycle or fixed point after two steps. In fact, we reach a fixed point if and only if the shape of the initial tableau is self-conjugate.

Partition Eisenstein series and semi-modular forms
Published in Res. number theory 7, 61 (2021) • View PublicationBIB
We identify a class of "semi-modular" forms invariant on special subgroups of $GL_2(\mathbb Z)$, which includes classical modular forms together with complementary classes of functions that are also nice in a specific sense. We define an Eisenstein-like series summed over integer partitions, and use it to construct families of semi-modular forms.

Multi-grounded partitions and character formulas
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a new generalisation of partitions, multi-grounded partitions, related to ground state paths indexed by dominant weights of Lie algebras. We use these to express characters of irreducible highest weight modules of Kac-Moody algebras of affine type as generating functions for multi-grounded partitions. This generalises the approach of our previous paper, where only irreducible highest weight modules with constant ground state paths were considered, to all ground state paths. As an application, we compute the characters of the level $1$ modules of the affine Lie algebras $A_{2n}^{(2)}(n\geq 2)$, $D_{n+1}^{(2)}(n\geq 2)$, $A_{2n-1}^{(1)}(n\geq 3)$, $B_{n}^{(1)}(n\geq 3)$, and $D_{n}^{(1)}(n\geq 4)$.
On the $r$-Derangements of type B
Extensions of a set partition obtained by imposing bounds on the size of the parts and the coloring of some of the elements are examined. Combinatorial properties and the generating functions of some counting sequences associated with these partitions are established. Connections with Riordan arrays are presented.

Generating series and matrix models for meandric systems with one shallow side
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this article, we investigate meandric systems having one shallow side: the arch configuration on that side has depth at most two. This class of meandric systems was introduced and extensively examined by I. P. Goulden, A. Nica, and D. Puder in 2020. Shallow arch configurations are in bijection with the set of interval partitions. We study meandric systems by using moment-cumulant transforms for non-crossing and interval partitions, corresponding to the notions of free and boolean independence, respectively, in non-commutative probability. We obtain formulas for the generating series of different classes of meandric systems with one shallow side, by explicitly enumerating the simpler, irreducible objects. In addition, we propose random matrix models for the corresponding meandric polynomials, which can be described in the language of quantum information theory, in particular that of quantum channels.

Flag Hilbert-Poincaré series of hyperplane arrangements and their Igusa zeta functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce and study a class of multivariate rational functions associated with hyperplane arrangements, called flag Hilbert-Poincaré series. These series are intimately connected with Igusa local zeta functions of products of linear polynomials, and their motivic and topological relatives. Our main results include a self-reciprocity result for central arrangements defined over fields of characteristic zero. We also prove combinatorial formulae for a specialization of the flag Hilbert-Poincaré series for irreducible Coxeter arrangements of types $\mathsf{A}$, $\mathsf{B}$, and $\mathsf{D}$ in terms of total partitions of the respective types. We show that a different specialization of the flag Hilbert-Poincaré series, which we call the coarse flag Hilbert-Poincaré series, exhibits intriguing nonnegativity features and - in the case of Coxeter arrangements - connections with Eulerian polynomials. For numerous classes and examples of hyperplane arrangements, we determine their (coarse) flag Hilbert-Poincaré series. Some computations were aided by a SageMath package we developed.

A Ramsey Theorem for Graded Lattices
We develop a Van der Waerden type theorem in an axiomatic setting of graded lattices and show that this axiomatic formulation can be applied to various lattices, for instance the set partition and the Boolean lattices. We derive the Hales-Jewett theorem as a corollary.

Symmetric permutation invariants in some tensor products
This is a note for constructing fundamental invariants and computing the Hilbert series of the invariant subalgebras of tensor products of polynomial rings under the action by a direct product of symmetric groups. Our computation relies on Schur functions bringing together several identities of combinatorial generating functions including that of plane partitions.
Preferential attachment hypergraph with high modularity
Published • View PublicationBIB
Numerous works have been proposed to generate random graphs preserving the same properties as real-life large scale networks. However, many real networks are better represented by hypergraphs. Few models for generating random hypergraphs exist and no general model allows to both preserve a power-law degree distribution and a high modularity indicating the presence of communities. We present a dynamic preferential attachment hypergraph model which features partition into communities. We prove that its degree distribution follows a power-law and we give theoretical lower bounds for its modularity. We compare its characteristics with a real-life co-authorship network and show that our model achieves good performances. We believe that our hypergraph model will be an interesting tool that may be used in many research domains in order to reflect better real-life phenomena.

A crank for bipartitions with designated summands
Published • View PublicationBIB
Andrews, Lewis and Lovejoy introduced the partition function $PD(n)$ as the number of partitions of $n$ with designated summands. A bipartition of $n$ is an ordered pair of partitions $(π_1, π_2)$ with the sum of all of the parts being $n$. In this paper, we introduce a generalized crank named the $pd$-crank for bipartitions with designated summands and give some inequalities for the $pd$-crank of bipartitions with designated summands modulo 2 and 3. We also define the $pd$-crank moments weighted by the parity of $pd$-cranks $μ_{2k,bd}(-1,n)$ and show the positivity of $(-1)^nμ_{2k,bd}(-1,n)$. Let $M_{bd}(m,n)$ denote the number of bipartitions of $n$ with designated summands with $pd$-crank $m$. We prove a monotonicity property of $pd$-cranks of bipartitions with designated summands and find that the sequence $\{M_{bd}(m,n)\}_{|m|\leq n}$ is unimodal for $n\not= 1,5,7$.
