Rational Noncrossing Partitions for all Coprime Pairs
Published • View PublicationBIB
For coprime positive integers $a<b$, Armstrong, Rhoades, and Williams (2013) defined a set $NC(a,b)$ of rational noncrossing partitions, a subset of the ordinary noncrossing partitions of $\{1, \ldots, b-1\}$. Bodnar and Rhoades (2015) confirmed their conjecture that $NC(a,b)$ is closed under rotation and proved an instance of the cyclic sieving phenomenon for this rotation action. We give a definition of $NC(a,b)$ which works for all coprime $a$ and $b$ and prove closure under rotation and cyclic sieving in this more general setting. We also generalize noncrossing parking functions to all coprime $a$ and $b$, and provide a character formula for the action of $\mathfrak{S}_a \times \mathbb{Z}_{b-1}$ on $\mathsf{Park}^{NC}(a,b)$.

Refined Enumeration of Corners in Tree-like Tableaux
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 19 no. 3, Combinatorics (September 26, 2017) dmtcs:3683 • View PublicationBIB
Tree-like tableaux are certain fillings of Ferrers diagrams originally introduced by Aval et al., which are in simple bijections with permutation tableaux coming from Postnikov's study of totally nonnegative Grassmanian and alternative tableaux introduced by Viennot. In this paper, we confirm two conjectures of Gao et al. on the refined enumeration of non-occupied corners in tree-like tableaux and symmetric tree-like tableaux via intermediate structures of alternative tableaux, linked partitions, type $B$ alternative tableaux and type $B$ linked partitions.

Sorting by Reversals and the Theory of 4-Regular Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the theory of sorting by reversals fits into the well-established theory of circuit partitions of 4-regular multigraphs (which also involves the combinatorial structures of circle graphs and delta-matroids). In this way, we expose strong connections between the two theories that have not been fully appreciated before. We also discuss a generalization of sorting by reversals involving the double-cut-and-join (DCJ) operation. Finally, we also show that the theory of sorting by reversals is closely related to that of gene assembly in ciliates.

Multiplicative partition functions for reverse plane partitions derived from an integrable dynamical system
A close connection of reverse plane partitions with an integrable dynamical system called the discrete two-dimensional (2D) Toda molecule is clarified. It is shown that a multiplicative partition function for reverse plane partition of arbitrary shape with bounded parts can be obtained from each non-vanishing solution to the discrete 2D Toda molecule. As an example a partition function which generalizes MacMahon's triple product formula as well as Gansner's multi-trace generating function is derived from a specific solution to the dynamical system.

Characterizing the number of coloured $m$-ary partitions modulo $m$, with and without gaps
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a pair of recent papers, Andrews, Fraenkel and Sellers provide a complete characterization for the number of $m$-ary partitions modulo $m$, with and without gaps. In this paper we extend these results to the case of coloured $m$-ary partitions, with and without gaps. Our method of proof is different, giving explicit expansions for the generating functions modulo $m$

Generalized coinvariant algebras for wreath products
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $r$ be a positive integer and let $G_n$ be the reflection group of $n \times n$ monomial matrices whose entries are $r^{th}$ complex roots of unity and let $k \leq n$. We define and study two new graded quotients $R_{n,k}$ and $S_{n,k}$ of the polynomial ring $\mathbb{C}[x_1, \dots, x_n]$ in $n$ variables. When $k = n$, both of these quotients coincide with the classical coinvariant algebra attached to $G_n$. The algebraic properties of our quotients are governed by the combinatorial properties of $k$-dimensional faces in the Coxeter complex attached to $G_n$ (in the case of $R_{n,k}$) and $r$-colored ordered set partitions of $\{1, 2, \dots, n\}$ with $k$ blocks (in the case of $S_{n,k}$). Our work generalizes a construction of Haglund, Rhoades, and Shimozono from the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ to the more general wreath products $G_n$.

Judicious partitions of uniform hypergraphs
Published in Combinatorica (2014) 34: 561 • View PublicationBIB
The vertices of any graph with $m$ edges may be partitioned into two parts so that each part meets at least $\frac{2m}{3}$ edges. Bollobás and Thomason conjectured that the vertices of any $r$-uniform hypergraph with $m$ edges may likewise be partitioned into $r$ classes such that each part meets at least $\frac{r}{2r-1}m$ edges. In this paper we prove the weaker statement that, for each $r\ge 4$, a partition into $r$ classes may be found in which each class meets at least $\frac{r}{3r-4}m$ edges, a substantial improvement on previous bounds.
Perfect phylogenies via branchings in acyclic digraphs and a generalization of Dilworth's theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by applications in cancer genomics and following the work of Hajirasouliha and Raphael (WABI 2014), Hujdurović et al. (IEEE TCBB, to appear) introduced the minimum conflict-free row split (MCRS) problem: split each row of a given binary matrix into a bitwise OR of a set of rows so that the resulting matrix corresponds to a perfect phylogeny and has the minimum possible number of rows among all matrices with this property. Hajirasouliha and Raphael also proposed the study of a similar problem, in which the task is to minimize the number of distinct rows of the resulting matrix. Hujdurović et al. proved that both problems are NP-hard, gave a related characterization of transitively orientable graphs, and proposed a polynomial-time heuristic algorithm for the MCRS problem based on coloring cocomparability graphs. We give new, more transparent formulations of the two problems, showing that the problems are equivalent to two optimization problems on branchings in a derived directed acyclic graph. Building on these formulations, we obtain new results on the two problems, including: (i) a strengthening of the heuristic by Hujdurović et al. via a new min-max result in digraphs generalizing Dilworth's theorem, which may be of independent interest, (ii) APX-hardness results for both problems, (iii) approximation algorithms, and (iv) exponential-time algorithms solving the two problems to optimality faster than the naïve brute-force approach. Our work relates to several well studied notions in combinatorial optimization: chain partitions in partially ordered sets, laminar hypergraphs, and (classical and weighted) colorings of graphs.

Minimum Cycle Decomposition: A Constructive Characterization for Graphs of Treewidth Two with Node Degrees Two and Four
Substantial efforts have been made to compute or estimate the minimum number $c(G)$ of cycles needed to partition the edges of an Eulerian graph. We give an equivalent characterization of Eulerian graphs of treewidth $2$ and with maximum degree $4$. This characterization enables us to present a linear time algorithm for the computation of $c(G)$ for all $G$ in this class.

Exponential Bounds for the Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv Constant
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory Series A 174, 105185, 19 pp, 2020 • View PublicationBIB
The Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv constant of an abelian group $G$, denoted $\mathfrak{s}(G)$, is the smallest $k\in\mathbb{N}$ such that any sequence of elements of $G$ of length $k$ contains a zero-sum subsequence of length $\exp(G)$. In this paper, we use the partition rank, which generalizes the slice rank, to prove that for any odd prime $p$, \[ \mathfrak{s}\left(\mathbb{F}_{p}^{n}\right)\leq(p-1)2^{p}\left(J(p)\cdot p\right)^{n} \] where $0.8414<J(p)<0.91837$ is the constant appearing in Ellenberg and Gijswijt's bound on arithmetic progression-free subsets of $\mathbb{F}_{p}^{n}$. For large $n$, and $p>3$, this is the first exponential improvement to the trivial bound. We also provide a near optimal result conditional on the conjecture that $\left(\mathbb{Z}/k\mathbb{Z}\right)^{n}$ satisfies property $D$, showing that in this case \[ \mathfrak{s}\left(\left(\mathbb{Z}/k\mathbb{Z}\right)^{n}\right)\leq(k-1)4^{n}+k. \]
Fair division and generalizations of Sperner- and KKM-type results

We treat problems of fair division, their various interconnections, and their relations to Sperner's lemma and the KKM theorem as well as their variants. We prove extensions of Alon's necklace splitting result in certain regimes and relate it to hyperplane mass partitions. We show the existence of fair cake division and rental harmony in the sense of Su even in the absence of full information. Furthermore, we extend Sperner's lemma and the KKM theorem to (colorful) quantitative versions for polytopes and pseudomanifolds. For simplicial polytopes our results turn out to be improvements over the earlier work of De Loera, Peterson, and Su on a polytopal version of Sperner's lemma. Moreover, our results extend the work of Musin on quantitative Sperner-type results for PL manifolds.

On the Existence of Tableaux with Given Modular Major Index
Published • View PublicationBIB
We provide simple necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a standard Young tableau of a given shape and major index $r$ mod $n$, for all $r$. Our result generalizes the $r=1$ case due essentially to (1974) and proves a recent conjecture due to Sundaram (2016) for the $r=0$ case. A byproduct of the proof is an asymptotic equidistribution result for "almost all" shapes. The proof uses a representation-theoretic formula involving Ramanujan sums and normalized symmetric group character estimates. Further estimates involving "opposite" hook lengths are given which are well-adapted to classifying which partitions $λ\vdash n$ have $f^λ\leq n^d$ for fixed $d$. We also give a new proof of a generalization of the hook length formula due to Fomin-Lulov (1995) for symmetric group characters at rectangles. We conclude with some remarks on unimodality of symmetric group characters.

Independent sets in hypergraphs and Ramsey properties of graphs and the integers
Published • View PublicationBIB
Many important problems in combinatorics and other related areas can be phrased in the language of independent sets in hypergraphs. Recently Balogh, Morris and Samotij, and independently Saxton and Thomason developed very general container theorems for independent sets in hypergraphs; both of which have seen numerous applications to a wide range of problems. In this paper we use the container method to give relatively short and elementary proofs of a number of results concerning Ramsey (and Turán) properties of (hyper)graphs and the integers. In particular: (i) We generalise the random Ramsey theorem of Rödl and Ruciński by providing a resilience analogue. Our result unifies and generalises several fundamental results in the area including the random version of Turán's theorem due to Conlon and Gowers and Schacht. (ii) The above result also resolves a general subcase of the asymmetric random Ramsey conjecture of Kohayakawa and Kreuter. (iii) All of the above results in fact hold for uniform hypergraphs. (iv) For a (hyper)graph $H$, we determine, up to an error term in the exponent, the number of $n$-vertex (hyper)graphs $G$ that have the Ramsey property with respect to $H$ (that is, whenever $G$ is $r$-coloured, there is a monochromatic copy of $H$ in $G$). (v) We strengthen the random Rado theorem of Friedgut, Rödl and Schacht by proving a resilience version of the result. (vi) For partition regular matrices $A$ we determine, up to an error term in the exponent, the number of subsets of $\{1,\dots,n\}$ for which there exists an $r$-colouring which contains no monochromatic solutions to $Ax=0$. Along the way a number of open problems are posed.

The Partition Rank of a Tensor and $k$-Right Corners in $\mathbb{F}_{q}^{n}$
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory Series A 174, 105190, 25 pp, 2020 • View PublicationBIB
Following the breakthrough of Croot, Lev, and Pach, Tao introduced a symmetrized version of their argument, which is now known as the slice rank method. In this paper, we introduce a more general version of the slice rank of a tensor, which we call the Partition Rank. This allows us to extend the slice rank method to problems that require the variables to be distinct. Using the partition rank, we generalize a recent result of Ge and Shangguan, and prove that any set $A\subset\mathbb{F}_{q}^{n}$ of size \[|A|>\binom{n+(k-1)q}{(k-1)(q-1)}\] contains a $k$-right-corner, that is distinct vectors $x_{1},\dots,x_{k},x_{k+1}$ where $x_{1}-x_{k+1},\dots,x_{k}-x_{k+1}$ are mutually orthogonal, for $q=p^{r}$, a prime power with $p>k$.

Transposition diameter on circular binary strings
Published in Journal of Automata, Languages and Combinatorics 29 (2024) 1, 49-61 • View PublicationBIB
On the string of finite length, a (genomic) transposition is defined as the operation of exchanging two consecutive substrings. The minimum number of transpositions needed to transform one into the other is the transposition distance, that has been researched in recent years. In this paper, we study transposition distances on circular binary strings. A circular binary string is the string that consists of symbols $0$ and $1$ and regards its circular shifts as equivalent. The property of transpositions which partition strings is observed. A lower bound on the transposition distance is represented in terms of partitions. An upper bound on the transposition distance follows covering of the set of partitions. The transposition diameter is given with a necessary and sufficient condition.

Counting Quasi-Idempotent Irreducible Integral Matrices

Given any polynomial $p$ in $C[X]$, we show that the set of irreducible matrices satisfying $p(A)=0$ is finite. In the specific case $p(X)=X^2-nX$, we count the number of irreducible matrices in this set and analyze the arising sequences and their asymptotics. Such matrices turn out to be related to generalized compositions and generalized partitions.

Springer fibers and Schubert points
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 76 (2019), pp. 10-26 • View PublicationBIB
Springer fibers are subvarieties of the flag variety parametrized by partitions; they are central objects of study in geometric representation theory. Schubert varieties are subvarieties of the flag variety that induce a well-known basis for the cohomology of the flag variety. This paper relates these two varieties combinatorially. We prove that the Betti numbers of the Springer fiber associated to a partition with at most three rows or two columns are equal to the Betti numbers of a specific union of Schubert varieties.

Schur P-positivity and involution Stanley symmetric functions
Published in IMRN (2017), rnx274 • View PublicationBIB
The involution Stanley symmetric functions $\hat{F}_y$ are the stable limits of the analogues of Schubert polynomials for the orbits of the orthogonal group in the flag variety. These symmetric functions are also generating functions for involution words, and are indexed by the involutions in the symmetric group. By construction each $\hat{F}_y$ is a sum of Stanley symmetric functions and therefore Schur positive. We prove the stronger fact that these power series are Schur $P$-positive. We give an algorithm to efficiently compute the decomposition of $\hat{F}_y$ into Schur $P$-summands, and prove that this decomposition is triangular with respect to the dominance order on partitions. As an application, we derive pattern avoidance conditions which characterize the involution Stanley symmetric functions which are equal to Schur $P$-functions. We deduce as a corollary that the involution Stanley symmetric function of the reverse permutation is a Schur $P$-function indexed by a shifted staircase shape. These results lead to alternate proofs of theorems of Ardila-Serrano and DeWitt on skew Schur functions which are Schur $P$-functions. We also prove new Pfaffian formulas for certain related involution Schubert polynomials.

Tangle-tree duality in abstract separation systems
Published in Adv. Math., 377(Article 107470), January 2021 • View PublicationBIB
We prove a general width duality theorem for combinatorial structures with well-defined notions of cohesion and separation. These might be graphs and matroids, but can be much more general or quite different. The theorem asserts a duality between the existence of high cohesiveness somewhere local and a global overall tree structure. We describe cohesive substructures in a unified way in the format of tangles: as orientations of low-order separations satisfying certain consistency axioms. These axioms can be expressed without reference to the underlying structure, such as a graph or matroid, but just in terms of the poset of the separations themselves. This makes it possible to identify tangles, and apply our tangle-tree duality theorem, in very diverse settings. Our result implies all the classical duality theorems for width parameters in graph minor theory, such as path-width, tree-width, branch-width or rank-width. It yields new, tangle-type, duality theorems for tree-width and path-width. It implies the existence of width parameters dual to cohesive substructures such as $k$-blocks, edge-tangles, or given subsets of tangles, for which no width duality theorems were previously known. Abstract separation systems can be found also in structures quite unlike graphs and matroids. For example, our theorem can be applied to image analysis by capturing the regions of an image as tangles of separations defined as natural partitions of its set of pixels. It can be applied in big data contexts by capturing clusters as tangles. It can be applied in the social sciences, e.g. by capturing as tangles the few typical mindsets of individuals found by a survey. It could also be applied in pure mathematics, e.g. to separations of compact manifolds.

Two Posets of Noncrossing Partitions Coming From Undesired Parking Spaces
Published in Revista Colombiana de Matemáticas 52 (2018), pages 65-86 • Search Publication
Consider the noncrossing set partitions of an $n$-element set which either do not contain the block $\{n-1,n\}$, or which do not contain the singleton block $\{n\}$ whenever $1$ and $n-1$ are in the same block. In this article we study the subposet of the noncrossing partition lattice induced by these elements, and show that it is a supersolvable lattice, and therefore lexicographically shellable. We give a combinatorial model for the NBB bases of this lattice and derive an explicit formula for the value of its Möbius function between least and greatest element. This work is motivated by a recent article by M. Bruce, M. Dougherty, M. Hlavacek, R. Kudo, and I. Nicolas, in which they introduce a subposet of the noncrossing partition lattice that is determined by parking functions with certain forbidden entries. In particular, they conjecture that the resulting poset always has a contractible order complex. We prove this conjecture by embedding their poset into ours, and showing that it inherits the lexicographic shellability.
