A spectral sequence for stratified spaces and configuration spaces of points
Published in Geom. Topol. 21 (2017) 2527-2555 • View PublicationBIB
We construct a spectral sequence associated to a stratified space, which computes the compactly supported cohomology groups of an open stratum in terms of the compactly supported cohomology groups of closed strata and the reduced cohomology groups of the poset of strata. Several familiar spectral sequences arise as special cases. The construction is sheaf-theoretic and works both for topological spaces and for the étale cohomology of algebraic varieties. As an application we prove a very general representation stability theorem for configuration spaces of points.

Construction of schemoids from posets
A schemoid is a generalization of association schemes from the point of view of small categories. In this article, we discuss schemoid structures for two kinds of small categories; the canonical small category defined by a poset, and another small category which arises a poset. We also discuss the schemoid algebra, that is an analogue of the Bose--Mesner algebra for an association scheme, for them.

Fourier transforms of polytopes, solid angle sums, and discrete volume
Given a real closed polytope $P$, we first describe the Fourier transform of its indicator function by using iterations of Stokes' theorem. We then use the ensuing Fourier transform formulations, together with the Poisson summation formula, to give a new algorithm to count fractionally-weighted lattice points inside the one-parameter family of all real dilates of $P$. The combinatorics of the face poset of $P$ plays a central role in the description of the Fourier transform of $P$. We also obtain a closed form for the codimension-1 coefficient that appears in an expansion of this sum in powers of the real dilation parameter $t$. This closed form generalizes some known results about the Macdonald solid-angle polynomial, which is the analogous expression traditionally obtained by requiring that $t$ assumes only integer values. Although most of the present methodology applies to all real polytopes, a particularly nice application is to the study of all real dilates of integer (and rational) polytopes.
Doppelgängers: Bijections of Plane Partitions
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices 2020, no. 2, 2020, 487-540 • View PublicationBIB
We say two posets are "doppelgängers" if they have the same number of $P$-partitions of each height $k$. We give a uniform framework for bijective proofs that posets are doppelgängers by synthesizing $K$-theoretic Schubert calculus techniques of H. Thomas and A. Yong with M. Haiman's rectification bijection and an observation of R. Proctor. Geometrically, these bijections reflect the rational equivalence of certain subvarieties of minuscule flag manifolds. As a special case, we provide the first bijective proof of a 1983 theorem of R. Proctor---that plane partitions of height $k$ in a rectangle are equinumerous with plane partitions of height $k$ in a trapezoid.
The facial weak order and its lattice quotients
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., 370:1469-1507, 2018 • View PublicationBIB
We investigate a poset structure that extends the weak order on a finite Coxeter group $W$ to the set of all faces of the permutahedron of $W$. We call this order the facial weak order. We first provide two alternative characterizations of this poset: a first one, geometric, that generalizes the notion of inversion sets of roots, and a second one, combinatorial, that uses comparisons of the minimal and maximal length representatives of the cosets. These characterizations are then used to show that the facial weak order is in fact a lattice, generalizing a well-known result of A. Björner for the classical weak order. Finally, we show that any lattice congruence of the classical weak order induces a lattice congruence of the facial weak order, and we give a geometric interpretation of their classes. As application, we describe the facial boolean lattice on the faces of the cube and the facial Cambrian lattice on the faces of the corresponding generalized associahedron.
A Decomposition of Parking Functions by Undesired Spaces
Published in Electron. J. Comb. 23 (3) (2016) #P3.32 • View PublicationBIB
There is a well-known bijection between parking functions of a fixed length and maximal chains of the noncrossing partition lattice which we can use to associate to each set of parking functions a poset whose Hasse diagram is the union of the corresponding maximal chains. We introduce a decomposition of parking functions based on the largest number omitted and prove several theorems about the corresponding posets. In particular, they share properties with the noncrossing partition lattice such as local self-duality, a nice characterization of intervals, a readily computable Möbius function, and a symmetric chain decomposition. We also explore connections with order complexes, labeled Dyck paths, and rooted forests.

Cyclopermutohedron: geometry and topology
Published • View PublicationBIB
The face poset of the permutohedron realizes the combinatorics of linearly ordered partitions of the set $[n]=\{1,...,n\}$. Similarly, the cyclopermutohedron is a virtual polytope that realizes the combinatorics of cyclically ordered partitions of the set $[n+1]$. The cyclopermutohedron was introduced by the third author by motivations coming from configuration spaces of polygonal linkages. In the paper we prove two facts: (1) the volume of the cyclopermutohedron equals zero, and (2) the homology groups $H_k$ for $k=0,...,n-2$ of the face poset of the cyclopermutohedron are non-zero free abelian groups. We also present a short formula for their ranks.

A Gröbner basis characterization for chordal comparability graphs
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 59 (2017), 122-128 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study toric ideals associated with multichains of posets. It is shown that the comparability graph of a poset is chordal if and only if there exists a quadratic Gröbner basis of the toric ideal of the poset. Strong perfect elimination orderings of strongly chordal graphs play an important role.

An upper bound on the size of diamond-free families of sets
Let $La(n,P)$ be the maximum size of a family of subsets of $[n]=\{1,2,...,n\}$ not containing $P$ as a (weak) subposet. The diamond poset, denoted $B_{2}$, is defined on four elements $x,y,z,w$ with the relations $x<y,z$ and $y,z<w$. $La(n,P)$ has been studied for many posets; one of the major open problems is determining $La(n,B_{2})$. Studying the average number of sets from a family of subsets of $[n]$ on a maximal chain in the Boolean lattice $2^{[n]}$ has been a fruitful method. We use a partitioning of the maximal chains and introduce an induction method to show that $La(n,B_{2})\leq(2.20711+o(1))\binom{n}{\left\lfloor \frac{n}{2}\right\rfloor }$, improving on the earlier bound of $(2.25+o(1))\binom{n}{\left\lfloor \frac{n}{2}\right\rfloor }$ by Kramer, Martin and Young.

Polynomials with palindromic and unimodal coefficients
Published in Acta Mathematica Sinica, English Series, 31 (2015), 565--575 • View PublicationBIB
Let $f(q)=a_rq^r+\cdots+a_sq^s$, with $a_r\neq 0$ and $a_s\neq 0$, be a real polynomial. It is a palindromic polynomial of darga $n$ if $r+s=n$ and $a_{r+i}=a_{s-i}$ for all $i$. Polynomials of darga $n$ form a linear subspace $\mathcal{P}_n(q)$ of $\mathbb{R}(q)_{n+1}$ of dimension $\lfloor{n/2}\rfloor+1$. We give transition matrices between two bases $\left\{q^j(1+q+\cdots+q^{n-2j})\right\}, \left\{q^j(1+q)^{n-2j}\right\}$ and the standard basis $\left\{q^j(1+q^{n-2j})\right\}$ of $\mathcal{P}_n(q)$. We present some characterizations and sufficient conditions for palindromic polynomials that can be expressed in terms of these two bases with nonnegative coefficients. We also point out the link between such polynomials and rank-generating functions of posets.
Tight Bounds for Consensus Systems Convergence
Published • View PublicationBIB
We analyze the asymptotic convergence of all infinite products of matrices taken in a given finite set, by looking only at finite or periodic products. It is known that when the matrices of the set have a common nonincreasing polyhedral norm, all infinite products converge to zero if and only if all infinite periodic products with period smaller than a certain value converge to zero, and bounds exist on that value. We provide a stronger bound holding for both polyhedral norms and polyhedral seminorms. In the latter case, the matrix products do not necessarily converge to 0, but all trajectories of the associated system converge to a common invariant space. We prove our bound to be tight, in the sense that for any polyhedral seminorm, there is a set of matrices such that not all infinite products converge, but every periodic product with period smaller than our bound does converge. Our technique is based on an analysis of the combinatorial structure of the face lattice of the unit ball of the nonincreasing seminorm. The bound we obtain is equal to half the size of the largest antichain in this lattice. Explicitly evaluating this quantity may be challenging in some cases. We therefore link our problem with the Sperner property: the property that, for some graded posets, -- in this case the face lattice of the unit ball -- the size of the largest antichain is equal to the size of the largest rank level. We show that some sets of matrices with invariant polyhedral seminorms lead to posets that do not have that Sperner property. However, this property holds for the polyhedron obtained when treating sets of stochastic matrices, and our bound can then be easily evaluated in that case. In particular, we show that for the dimension of the space $n \geq 8$, our bound is smaller than the previously known bound by a multiplicative factor of $\frac{3}{2 \sqrt{πn}}$.
Incidence Geometry in a Weyl Chamber II: $SL_n$
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the polyhedral geometry of the hyperplanes orthogonal to the weights of the first and the second fundamental representations of $sl_n$ inside the dual fundamental Weyl chamber. We obtain generating functions that enumerate the flats and the faces of a fixed dimension. In addition, we describe the extreme rays of the incidence geometry and classify simplicial faces. From the perspective of supersymmetric gauge theories with 8 supercharges in five dimensional spacetime, the poset of flats is isomorphic to the network of mixed Coulomb-Higgs branches. On the other hand, the poset of faces is conjectured to be isomorphic to the network of crepant partial resolutions of an elliptic fibration with gauge algebra $sl_n$ and "matter representation" given by the sum of the first two fundamental representations.

Rowmotion and generalized toggle groups
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 20 no. 1, Combinatorics (May 25, 2018) dmtcs:3962 • View PublicationBIB
We generalize the notion of the toggle group, as defined in [P. Cameron-D. Fon-der-Flaass '95] and further explored in [J. Striker-N. Williams '12], from the set of order ideals of a poset to any family of subsets of a finite set. We prove structure theorems for certain finite generalized toggle groups, similar to the theorem of Cameron and Fon-der-Flaass in the case of order ideals. We apply these theorems and find other results on generalized toggle groups in the following settings: chains, antichains, and interval-closed sets of a poset; independent sets, vertex covers, acyclic subgraphs, and spanning subgraphs of a graph; matroids and convex geometries. We generalize rowmotion, an action studied on order ideals in [P. Cameron-D. Fon-der-Flaass '95] and [J. Striker-N. Williams '12], to a map we call cover-closure on closed sets of a closure operator. We show that cover-closure is bijective if and only if the set of closed sets is isomorphic to the set of order ideals of a poset, which implies rowmotion is the only bijective cover-closure map.

Resolutions of co-letterplace ideals and generalizations of Bier spheres
Published in Transactions of the American Mathematical Society 371 (2019), pp. 8733-8753 • View PublicationBIB
We give the resolutions of co-letterplace ideals of posets in a completely explicit, very simple form. This generalizes and simplifies a number of linear resolutions in the literature, among them the Eliahou-Kervaire resolutions of strongly stable ideals generated in a single degree. Our method is based on a general result of K. Yanagawa using the canonical module of a Cohen-Macaulay Stanley-Reisner ring. We discuss in detail how the canonical module may effectively be computed, and from this derive directly the resolutions. A surprising consequence is that we obtain a large class of simplicial spheres comprehensively generalizing Bier spheres.

The homotopy theory of equivariant posets

Let $G$ be a discrete group. We prove that the category of $G$-posets admits a model structure that is Quillen equivalent to the standard model structure on $G$-spaces. As is already true nonequivariantly, the three classes of maps defining the model structure are not well understood calculationally. To illustrate, we exhibit some examples of cofibrant and fibrant posets and an example of a non-cofibrant finite poset.

Involution words II: braid relations and atomic structures
Published in J. Algebr. Comb. 45 (2017), 701-743 • View PublicationBIB
Involution words are variations of reduced words for twisted involutions in Coxeter groups. They arise naturally in the study of the Bruhat order, of certain Iwahori-Hecke algebra modules, and of orbit closures in flag varieties. Specifically, to any twisted involutions $x$, $y$ in a Coxeter group $W$ with automorphism $*$, we associate a set of involution words $\hat{\mathcal{R}}_*(x,y)$. This set is the disjoint union of the reduced words of a set of group elements $\mathcal{A}_*(x,y)$, which we call the atoms of $y$ relative to $x$. The atoms, in turn, are contained in a larger set $\mathcal{B}_*(x,y) \subset W$ with a similar definition, whose elements we refer to as Hecke atoms. Our main results concern some interesting properties of the sets $\hat{\mathcal{R}}_*(x,y)$ and $\mathcal{A}_*(x,y) \subset \mathcal{B}_*(x,y)$. For finite Coxeter groups we prove that $\mathcal{A}_*(1,y)$ consists of exactly the minimal-length elements $w \in W$ such that $w^* y \leq w$ in Bruhat order, and conjecture a more general property for arbitrary Coxeter groups. In type $A$, we describe a simple set of conditions characterizing the sets $\mathcal{A}_*(x,y)$ for all involutions $x,y \in S_n$, giving a common generalization of three recent theorems of Can, Joyce, and Wyser. We show that the atoms of a fixed involution in the symmetric group (relative to $x=1$) naturally form a graded poset, while the Hecke atoms surprisingly form an equivalence class under the "Chinese relation" studied by Cassaigne, Espie, et al. These facts allow us to recover a recent theorem of Hu and Zhang describing a set of "braid relations" spanning the involution words of any self-inverse permutation. We prove a generalization of this result giving an analogue of Matsumoto's theorem for involution words in arbitrary Coxeter groups.
Euler characteristic reciprocity for chromatic, flow and order polynomials
Published in Journal of Singularities 16 (2017), 212-227 • View PublicationBIB
The Euler characteristic of a semialgebraic set can be considered as a generalization of the cardinality of a finite set. An advantage of semialgebraic sets is that we can define "negative sets" to be the sets with negative Euler characteristics. Applying this idea to posets, we introduce the notion of semialgebraic posets. Using "negative posets", we establish Stanley's reciprocity theorems for order polynomials at the level of Euler characteristics. We also formulate the Euler characteristic reciprocities for chromatic and flow polynomials.

Webs of stars or how to triangulate free sums of point configurations
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory. Series A 159 (2018), 183-214 • View PublicationBIB
The triangulations of point configurations which decompose as a free sum are classified in terms of the triangulations of the summands. The methods employ two new kinds of partially ordered sets to be associated with any triangulation of a point set with one point marked, the "web of stars" and the "stabbing poset". Triangulations of smooth Fano polytopes are discussed as a case study.

Decomposition spaces, incidence algebras and Möbius inversion II: completeness, length filtration, and finiteness
Published in Adv. Math. 333 (2018), 1242-1292 • View PublicationBIB
This is the second in a trilogy of papers introducing and studying the notion of decomposition space as a general framework for incidence algebras and Möbius inversion, with coefficients in $\infty$-groupoids. A decomposition space is a simplicial $\infty$-groupoid satisfying an exactness condition weaker than the Segal condition. Just as the Segal condition expresses composition, the new condition expresses decomposition. In this paper, we introduce various technical conditions on decomposition spaces. The first is a completeness condition (weaker than Rezk completeness), needed to control simplicial nondegeneracy. For complete decomposition spaces we establish a general Möbius inversion principle, expressed as an explicit equivalence of $\infty$-groupoids. Next we analyse two finiteness conditions on decomposition spaces. The first, that of locally finite length, guarantees the existence of the important length filtration on the associated incidence coalgebra. We show that a decomposition space of locally finite length is actually the left Kan extension of a semi-simplicial space. The second finiteness condition, local finiteness, ensures we can take homotopy cardinality to pass from the level of $\infty$-groupoids to the level of vector spaces. These three conditions - completeness, locally finite length, and local finiteness - together define our notion of Möbius decomposition space, which extends Leroux's notion of Möbius category (in turn a common generalisation of the locally finite posets of Rota et al. and of the finite decomposition monoids of Cartier-Foata), but which also covers many coalgebra constructions which do not arise from Möbius categories, such as the Faà di Bruno and Connes-Kreimer bialgebras. Note: The notion of decomposition space was arrived at independently by Dyckerhoff and Kapranov (arXiv:1212.3563) who call them unital 2-Segal spaces.
