Schubert cells of mixed type in complex Lagrangian Grassmannians
We describe CW decompositions of complex Lagrangian Grassmannians, that contain as subcomplexes, CW decompositions of real Lagrangian Grassmannians by Schubert-Arnol'd cells. The degrees of attaching maps are explicitly computed in terms of quantities that can be read off from the corresponding shifted Young diagrams of mixed type. The signs are determined by a choice of lexicographical ordering on coordinates. As an immediate consequence, we obtain the homotopy extension property for real and complex Lagrangian Grassmannians. We also show some torsion classes in the integral homology of the real Lagrangian Grassmannian are contractible inside the complex Lagrangian Grassmannian.

Principal specializations of Schubert polynomials, multi-layered permutations and asymptotics
Let $v(n)$ be the largest principal specialization of Schubert polynomials for layered permutations $v(n) := \max_{w \in \mathcal{L}_n} \mathfrak{S}_w(1,\ldots,1)$. Morales, Pak and Panova proved that there is a limit \[\lim_{n \to \infty} \frac{\log v(n)}{n^2},\] and gave a precise description of layered permutations reaching the maximum. In this paper, we extend Morales Pak and Panova's results to generalized principal specialization $\mathfrak{S}_w(1,q,q^2,\ldots)$ for multi-layered permutations when $q$ equals a root of unity.

Derived Categories of Permutahedral and Stellahedral Varieties
We utilize the coherent-constructible correspondence to construct full strongly exceptional collections of nef line bundles in the derived category of a toric variety through the combinatorics of constructible sheaves built from polytopes. To show that sequences are full, we build exact complexes of line bundles that categorify the relations in the McMullen polytope algebra. We compute the homomorphisms between certain constructible sheaves on polytopes and use this to reduce the question of exceptionality to showing that certain set differences of polytopes are contractible. As an application of our method, we construct full strongly exceptional collections of nef line bundles for the toric varieties associated to the permutahedron, stellahedron, and the type $B_n$ Coxeter permutahedron. The line bundles in our collections are indexed by base polytopes of loopless Schubert matroids, independence polytopes of all Schubert matroids, and feasible polytopes of loopless Schubert delta matroids, respectively. Our collections satisfy a number of nice properties: First, the quiver with relations that encodes the endomorphism algebra of the tilting sheaf can be described matroid-theoretically as a slight extension of the notion of weak maps and inclusion of matroids; Second, our collections are invariant under the natural symmetries of the corresponding fans; Finally, the induced semi-orthogonal decomposition of the derived categories refines the cuspidal semi-orthogonal decomposition as studied by Castravet and Tevelev. This gives a full strongly exceptional collection of nef line bundles for the cuspidal parts of the derived categories of our varieties indexed by loopless and coloopless Schubert matroids and Schubert delta matroids.

Free fermionic probability theory and K-theoretic Schubert calculus
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 13 (2025) e197 • View PublicationBIB
For each of the four particle processes given by Dieker and Warren [arXiv:0707.1843], we show the $n$-step transition kernels are given by the (dual) (weak) refined symmetric Grothendieck functions up to a simple overall factor. We do so by encoding the particle dynamics as the basis of free fermions first introduced by the first author, which we translate into deformed Schur operators acting on partitions. We provide a direct combinatorial proof of this relationship in each case, where the defining tableaux naturally describe the particle motions.

Schubert matroids, Delannoy paths, and Speyer's invariant
Published in Combinatorial Theory, Vol. 3, Issue 3, 2023 • View PublicationBIB
We provide a combinatorial way of computing Speyer's $g$-polynomial on arbitrary Schubert matroids via the enumeration of certain Delannoy paths. We define a new statistic of a basis in a matroid, and express the $g$-polynomial of a Schubert matroid in terms of it and internal and external activities. Some surprising positivity properties of the $g$-polynomial of Schubert matroids are deduced from our expression. Finally, we combine our formulas with a fundamental result of Derksen and Fink to provide an algorithm for computing the $g$-polynomial of an arbitrary matroid.

Total positivity for matroid Schubert varieties
We define the totally nonnegative matroid Schubert variety $\mathcal Y_V$ of a linear subspace $V \subset \mathbb R^n$. We show that $\mathcal Y_V$ is a regular CW complex homeomorphic to a closed ball, with strata indexed by pairs of acyclic flats of the oriented matroid of $V$. This closely resembles the regularity theorem for totally nonnegative generalized flag varieties. As a corollary, we obtain a regular CW structure on the real matroid Schubert variety of $V$.
Matrix positivity preservers in fixed dimension. II: positive definiteness and strict monotonicity of Schur function ratios
We continue the study of real polynomials acting entrywise on matrices of fixed dimension to preserve positive semidefiniteness, together with the related analysis of order properties of Schur polynomials. Previous work has shown that, given a real polynomial with positive coefficients that is perturbed by adding a higher-degree monomial, there exists a negative lower bound for the coefficient of the perturbation which characterizes when the perturbed polynomial remains positivity preserving. We show here that, if the perturbation coefficient is strictly greater than this bound then the transformed matrix becomes positive definite given a simple genericity condition that can be readily verified. We identity a slightly stronger genericity condition that ensures positive definiteness occurs at the boundary. The analysis is complemented by computing the rank of the transformed matrix in terms of the location of the original matrix in a Schubert cell-type stratification that we have introduced and explored previously. The proofs require enhancing to strictness a Schur monotonicity result of Khare and Tao, to show that the ratio of Schur polynomials is strictly increasing along each coordinate on the positive orthant and non-decreasing on its closure whenever the defining tuples satisfy a coordinate-wise domination condition.

Nil-Hecke rings and the Schubert calculus
The purpose of the present notes is to give a self-contained exposition on the use of the techniques of Nil-Hecke algebras in the localization approach to the equivariant Schubert calculus for cohomology of flag varieties. We also demonstrate how these techniques can be applied to non-crystallographic root systems as well as to study (connective) $K$-theory of flag varieties.

On the Reduced Gröbner Bases of Blockwise Determinantal Ideals
Blockwise determinantal ideals are those generated by the union of all the minors of specified sizes in certain blocks of a generic matrix, and they are the natural generalization of many existing determinantal ideals like the Schubert and ladder ones. In this paper we establish several criteria to verify whether the Gröbner bases of blockwise determinantal ideals with respect to (anti-)diagonal term orders are minimal or reduced. In particular, for Schubert determinantal ideals, while all the elusive minors form the reduced Gröbner bases when the defining permutations are vexillary, in the non-vexillary case we derive an explicit formula for computing the reduced Gröbner basis from elusive minors which avoids all algebraic operations. The fundamental properties of being normal and strong for W-characteristic sets and characteristic pairs, which are heavily connected to the reduced Gröbner bases, of Schubert determinantal ideals are also proven.

Universal Plücker coordinates for the Wronski map and positivity in real Schubert calculus
Given a $d$-dimensional vector space $V \subset \mathbb{C}[u]$ of polynomials, its Wronskian is the polynomial $(u + z_1) \cdots (u + z_n)$ whose zeros $-z_i$ are the points of $\mathbb{C}$ such that $V$ contains a nonzero polynomial with a zero of order at least $d$ at $-z_i$. Equivalently, $V$ is a solution to the Schubert problem defined by osculating planes to the moment curve at $z_1, \dots, z_n$. The inverse Wronski problem involves finding all $V$ with a given Wronskian $(u + z_1) \cdots (u + z_n)$. We solve this problem by providing explicit formulas for the Grassmann-Plücker coordinates of the general solution $V$, as commuting operators in the group algebra $\mathbb{C}[\mathfrak{S}_n]$ of the symmetric group. The Plücker coordinates of individual solutions over $\mathbb{C}$ are obtained by restricting to an eigenspace and replacing each operator by its eigenvalue. This generalizes work of Mukhin, Tarasov, and Varchenko (2013) and of Purbhoo (2022), which give formulas in $\mathbb{C}[\mathfrak{S}_n]$ for the differential equation satisfied by $V$. Moreover, if $z_1, \dots, z_n$ are real and nonnegative, then our operators are positive semidefinite, implying that the Plücker coordinates of $V$ are all real and nonnegative. This verifies several outstanding conjectures in real Schubert calculus, including the positivity conjectures of Mukhin and Tarasov (2017) and of Karp (2021), the disconjugacy conjecture of Eremenko (2015), and the divisor form of the secant conjecture of Sottile (2003). The proofs involve the representation theory of $\mathfrak{S}_n$, symmetric functions, and $τ$-functions of the KP hierarchy.

Bumpless pipe dreams meet Puzzles
Published • View PublicationBIB
Knutson and Zinn-Justin recently found a puzzle rule for the expansion of the product $\mathfrak{G}_{u}(x,t)\cdot \mathfrak{G}_{v}(x,t)$ of two double Grothendieck polynomials indexed by permutations with separated descents. We establish its triple Schubert calculus version in the sense of Knutson and Tao, namely, a formula for expanding $\mathfrak{G}_{u}(x,y)\cdot \mathfrak{G}_{v}(x,t)$ in different secondary variables. Our rule is formulated in terms of pipe puzzles, incorporating both the structures of bumpless pipe dreams and classical puzzles. As direct applications, we recover the separated-descent puzzle formula by Knutson and Zinn-Justin (by setting $y=t$) and the bumpless pipe dream model of double Grothendieck polynomials by Weigandt (by setting $v=\operatorname{id}$ and $x=t$). Moreover, we utilize the formula to partially confirm a positivity conjecture of Kirillov about applying a skew operator to a Schubert polynomial.
Upper bounds of dual flagged Weyl characters
For a subset $D$ of boxes in an $n\times n$ square grid, let $χ_{D}(x)$ denote the dual character of the flagged Weyl module associated to $D$. It is known that $χ_{D}(x)$ specifies to a Schubert polynomial (resp., a key polynomial) in the case when $D$ is the Rothe diagram of a permutation (resp., the skyline diagram of a composition). One can naturally define a lower and an upper bound of $χ_{D}(x)$. M{é}sz{á}ros, St. Dizier and Tanjaya conjectured that $χ_{D}(x)$ attains the upper bound if and only if $D$ avoids a certain subdiagram. We provide a proof of this conjecture.

Towards combinatorial characterization of the smoothness of Hessenberg Schubert varieties
A \emph{Hessenberg Schubert variety} is an irreducible component of the intersection of a Schubert variety and a Hessenberg variety, defined as the closure of a Schubert cell inside the Hessenberg variety. We consider the smoothness of Hessenberg Schubert varieties of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties of type $A$ in this paper. We consider the smoothness of the intersection of a Schubert variety and a Hessenberg variety to ensure the smoothness of the corresponding Hessenberg Schubert variety. Specifically, we analyze the structure of the GKM graphs of the intersection of a Schubert variety indexed by some special permutations and a Hessenberg variety. The regularity of the GKM graph is completely characterized in terms of pattern avoidance, which is a necessary (and also sufficient conjecturally) condition for the intersection to be smooth. We then extend the pattern avoidance result to all permutations, which is believed to be a sufficient condition for the corresponding Hessenberg Schubert variety to be smooth.

Combinatorics of semi-toric degenerations of Schubert varieties in type C
An approach to Schubert calculus is to realize Schubert classes as concrete combinatorial objects such as Schubert polynomials. Using the polytope ring of the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes, Kiritchenko-Smirnov-Timorin realized each Schubert class as a sum of reduced Kogan faces. The first named author introduced a generalization of reduced Kogan faces to symplectic Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes using a semi-toric degeneration of a Schubert variety, and extended the result of Kiritchenko-Smirnov-Timorin to type C case. In this paper, we introduce a combinatorial model to this type C generalization using a kind of pipe dream with self-crossings. As an application, we prove that the type C generalization can be constructed by skew mitosis operators.

Schubert puzzles and integrability III: separated descents
In paper I of this series we gave positive formulae for expanding the product $\mathfrak S^π\mathfrak S^ρ$ of two Schubert polynomials, in the case that both $π,ρ$ had shared descent set of size $\leq 3$. Here we introduce and give positive formulae for two new classes of Schubert product problems: separated descent in which $π$'s last descent occurs at (or before) $ρ$'s first, and almost separated descent in which $π$'s last two descents occur at (or before) $ρ$'s first two respectively. In both cases our puzzle formulae extend to $K$-theory (multiplying Grothendieck polynomials), and in the separated descent case, to equivariant $K$-theory. The two formulae arise (via quantum integrability) from fusion of minuscule quantized loop algebra representations in types $A$, $D$ respectively.

On combinatorics of string polytopes in types $B$ and $C$
A string polytope is a rational convex polytope whose lattice points parametrize a highest weight crystal basis, which is obtained from a string cone by explicit affine inequalities depending on a highest weight. It also inherits geometric information of a flag variety such as toric degenerations, Newton-Okounkov bodies, mirror symmetry, Schubert calculus, and so on. In this paper, we study combinatorial properties of string polytopes in types $B$ and $C$ by giving an explicit description of string cones in these types which is analogous to Gleizer-Postnikov's description of string cones in type $A$. As an application, we characterize string polytopes in type $C$ which are unimodularly equivalent to the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope in type $C$ for a specific highest weight.

Forest polynomials and the class of the permutahedral variety
We study a basis of the polynomial ring that we call forest polynomials. This family of polynomials is indexed by a combinatorial structure called indexed forests and permits several definitions, one of which involves flagged P-partitions. As such, these polynomials have a positive expansion in the basis of slide polynomials. By a novel insertion procedure that may be viewed as a generalization of the Sylvester correspondence we establish that Schubert polynomials decompose positively in terms of forest polynomials. Our insertion procedure involves a correspondence on words which allows us to show that forest polynomials multiply positively. We proceed to show that forest polynomials are a particularly convenient basis in regards to studying the quotient of the polynomial ring modulo the ideal of positive degree quasisymmetric polynomials. This aspect allows us to give a manifestly nonnegative integral description for the Schubert class expansion of the cohomology class of the permutahedral variety in terms of a parking procedure. We study the associated combinatorics in depth and introduce a multivariate extension of mixed Eulerian numbers.

Connection between Schubert polynomials and top Lascoux polynomials
Schubert polynomials form a basis of the polynomial ring. This basis and its structure constants have received extensive study. Recently, Pan and Yu initiated the study of top Lascoux polynomials. These polynomials form a basis of a subalgebra of the polynomial ring where each graded piece has finite dimension. This paper connects Schubert polynomials and top Lascoux polynomials via a simple operator. We use this connection to show these two bases share the same structure constants. We also translate several results on Schubert polynomials to top Lascoux polynomials, including combinatorial formulas for their monomial expansions and supports.

Matrix Schubert varieties, binomial ideals, and reduced Gröbner bases
We prove a sharp lower bound on the number of terms in an element of the reduced Gröbner basis of a Schubert determinantal ideal $I_w$ under the term order of [Knutson-Miller '05]. We give three applications. First, we give a pattern-avoidance characterization of the matrix Schubert varieties whose defining ideals are binomial. This complements a result of [Escobar-Mészáros '16] on matrix Schubert varieties that are toric with respect to their natural torus action. Second, we give a combinatorial proof that the recent formulas of [Rajchgot-Robichaux-Weigandt '23] and [Almousa-Dochtermann-Smith '22] computing the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of vexillary $I_w$ and toric edge ideals of bipartite graphs respectively agree for binomial $I_w$. Third, we demonstrate that the Gröbner basis for $I_w$ given by minimal generators [Gao-Yong '22] is reduced if and only if the defining permutation $w$ is vexillary.

Crystals for shifted key polynomials
Published in Algebras and Representation Theory 28 (2025), 921-979 • View PublicationBIB
This article continues our study of $P$- and $Q$-key polynomials, which are (non-symmetric) "partial" Schur $P$- and $Q$-functions as well as "shifted" versions of key polynomials. Our main results provide a crystal interpretation of $P$- and $Q$-key polynomials, namely, as the characters of certain connected subcrystals of normal crystals associated to the queer Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{q}_n$. In the $P$-key case, the ambient normal crystals are the $\mathfrak{q}_n$-crystals studied by Grantcharov et al., while in the $Q$-key case, these are replaced by the extended $\mathfrak{q}_n$-crystals recently introduced by the first author and Tong. Using these constructions, we propose a crystal-theoretic lift of several conjectures about the decomposition of involution Schubert polynomials into $P$- and $Q$-key polynomials. We verify these generalized conjectures in a few special cases. Along the way, we establish some miscellaneous results about normal $\mathfrak{q}_n$-crystals and Demazure $\mathfrak{gl}_n$-crystals.
