Symmetric functions and the principal case of the Frankl-Füredi conjecture
Let $r\geq3$ and $G$ be an $r$-uniform hypergraph with vertex set $\left\{ 1,\ldots,n\right\} $ and edge set $E$. Let \[ μ\left( G\right) :=\max {\textstyle\sum\limits_{\left\{ i_{1},\ldots,i_{r}\right\} \in E}} x_{i_{1}}\cdots x_{i_{r}}, \] where the maximum is taken over all nonnegative $x_{1},\ldots,x_{n}$ with $x_{1}+\cdots+x_{n}=1.$ Let $t\geq r-1$ be the unique real number such that $\left\vert E\right\vert =\binom{t}{r}$. It is shown that if $r\leq5$ or $t\geq4\left( r-1\right) \left( r-2\right) $, then \[ μ\left( G\right) \leq t^{-r}\binom{t}{r}% \] with equality holding if and only if $t$ is an integer. The proof is based on some new bounds on elementary symmetric functions.

Cylindric Reverse Plane Partitions and 2D TQFT
Published in Séminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire - FPSAC 2018, 80B, 30 • Search Publication
The ring of symmetric functions carries the structure of a Hopf algebra. When computing the coproduct of complete symmetric functions $h_λ$ one arrives at weighted sums over reverse plane partitions (RPP) involving binomial coefficients. Employing the action of the extended affine symmetric group at fixed level $n$ we generalise these weighted sums to cylindric RPP and define cylindric complete symmetric functions. The latter are shown to be $h$-positive, that is, their expansions coefficients in the basis of complete symmetric functions are non-negative integers. We state an explicit formula in terms of tensor multiplicities for irreducible representations of the generalised symmetric group. Moreover, we relate the cylindric complete symmetric functions to a 2D topological quantum field theory (TQFT) that is a generalisation of the celebrated $\mathfrak{\widehat{sl}}_n$-Verlinde algebra or Wess-Zumino-Witten fusion ring, which plays a prominent role in the context of vertex operator algebras and algebraic geometry.

Half-space Macdonald processes
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Pi 8 (2020) e11 • View PublicationBIB
Macdonald processes are measures on sequences of integer partitions built using the Cauchy summation identity for Macdonald symmetric functions. These measures are a useful tool to uncover the integrability of many probabilistic systems, including the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation and a number of other models in its universality class. In this paper we develop the structural theory behind half-space variants of these models and the corresponding half-space Macdonald processes. These processes are built using a Littlewood summation identity instead of the Cauchy identity, and their analysis is considerably harder than their full-space counterparts. We compute moments and Laplace transforms of observables for general half-space Macdonald measures. Introducing new dynamics preserving this class of measures, we relate them to various stochastic processes, in particular the log-gamma polymer in a half-quadrant (they are also related to the stochastic six-vertex model in a half-quadrant and the half-space ASEP). For the polymer model, we provide explicit integral formulas for the Laplace transform of the partition function. Non-rigorous saddle point asymptotics yield convergence of the directed polymer free energy to either the Tracy-Widom GOE, GSE or the Gaussian distribution depending on the average size of weights on the boundary.

Chromatic symmetric functions via the group algebra of $S_n$
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove some Schur positivity results for the chromatic symmetric function $X_G$ of a (hyper)graph $G$, using connections to the group algebra of the symmetric group. The first such connection works for (hyper)forests $F$: we describe the Schur coefficients of $X_F$ in terms of eigenvalues of a product of Hermitian idempotents in the group algebra, one factor for each edge (a more general formula of similar shape holds for all chordal graphs). Our main application of this technique is to prove a conjecture of Taylor on the Schur positivity of certain $X_F$, which implies Schur positivity of the formal group laws associated to various combinatorial generating functions. We also introduce the pointed chromatic symmetric function $X_{G,v}$ associated to a rooted graph $(G,v)$. We prove that if $X_{G,v}$ and $X_{H,w}$ are positive in the generalized Schur basis of Strahov, then the chromatic symmetric function of the wedge sum of $(G,v)$ and $(H,w)$ is Schur positive.

The Hopf monoid of Megagreedoids
We introduce megagreedoids, which generalize polymatroids, megamatroids, and greedoids. We define a quasisymmetric function invariant for a megagreedoid, and show that it has a positive expansion in the basis of fundamental quasisymmetric functions. Our proof involves lexicographic shellability. We also show that megagreedoids form a Hopf monoid. A running example is a megagreedoid associated to a rooted connected graph, and the resulting generalization of the chromatic symmetric function.

Vanishing ideals of binary Hamming spheres
We consider the simplified Algebraic Normal Form (sANF) of Boolean functions vanishing on Hamming spheres centred at zero and the associated sANF vector. We show that this vector is periodic, leading to an efficient computation of the sANF and to specific formulas for particular cases. Moreover, we explicitly provide a connection to the binary M{ö}bius transform of the elementary symmetric functions. We conclude by presenting a method based on polynomial evaluation to bound the minimum distance of binary nonlinear codes. The same method can be used to compute the minimum distance and the weight distribution of binary linear codes.
Bernstein operators and super-Schur functions: combinatorial aspects
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Bernstein vertex operators, which can be used to build recursively the Schur functions, are extended to superspace. Four families of super vertex operators are defined, corresponding to the four natural families of Schur functions in superspace. Combinatorial proofs that the super Bernstein vertex operators indeed build the Schur functions in superspace recursively are provided. We briefly mention a possible realization, in terms of symmetric functions in superspace, of the super-KP hierarchy, where the tau-function naturally expands in one of the super-Schur bases.

Algebraic formulas for the structure constants in symmetric functions
Littlewood-Richardson rule gives the decomposition formula for the multiplication of two Schur functions, while the decomposition formula for the multiplication of two Hall-Littlewood functions or two universal characters is also given by the combinatorial method. In this paper, using the vertex operator realizations of these symmetric functions, we construct the algebraic forms of these decomposition formulas.

Macdonald Polynomials of Type $C_n$ with One-Column Diagrams and Deformed Catalan Numbers
Published in SIGMA 14 (2018), 101, 33 pages • View PublicationBIB
We present an explicit formula for the transition matrix $\mathcal{C}$ from the type $C_n$ degeneration of the Koornwinder polynomials $P_{(1^r)}(x\,|\,a,-a,c,-c\,|\,q,t)$ with one column diagrams, to the type $C_n$ monomial symmetric polynomials $m_{(1^{r})}(x)$. The entries of the matrix $\mathcal{C}$ enjoy a set of three term recursion relations, which can be regarded as a $(a,c,t)$-deformation of the one for the Catalan triangle or ballot numbers. Some transition matrices are studied associated with the type $(C_n,C_n)$ Macdonald polynomials $P^{(C_n,C_n)}_{(1^r)}(x\,|\,b;q,t)= P_{(1^r)}\big(x\,|\,b^{1/2},-b^{1/2},q^{1/2}b^{1/2},-q^{1/2}b^{1/2}\,|\,q,t\big)$. It is also shown that the $q$-ballot numbers appear as the Kostka polynomials, namely in the transition matrix from the Schur polynomials $P^{(C_n,C_n)}_{(1^r)}(x\,|\,q;q,q)$ to the Hall-Littlewood polynomials $P^{(C_n,C_n)}_{(1^r)}(x\,|\,t;0,t)$.

Hall-Littlewood expansions of Schur delta operators at $t = 0$
For any Schur function $s_ν$, the associated {\em delta operator} $Δ'_{s_ν}$ is a linear operator on the ring of symmetric functions which has the modified Macdonald polynomials as an eigenbasis. When $ν= (1^{n-1})$ is a column of length $n-1$, the symmetric function $Δ'_{e_{n-1}} e_n$ appears in the Shuffle Theorem of Carlsson-Mellit. More generally, when $ν= (1^{k-1})$ is any column the polynomial $Δ'_{e_{k-1}} e_n$ is the symmetric function side of the Delta Conjecture of Haglund-Remmel-Wilson. We give an expansion of $ωΔ'_{s_ν} e_n$ at $t = 0$ in the dual Hall-Littlewood basis for any partition $ν$. The Delta Conjecture at $t = 0$ was recently proven by Garsia-Haglund-Remmel-Yoo; our methods give a new proof of this result. We give an algebraic interpretation of $ωΔ'_{s_ν} e_n$ at $t = 0$ in terms of a $\mathrm{Hom}$-space.

On an Algorithm for Comparing the Chromatic Symmetric Functions of Trees
It is a long-standing question of Stanley whether or not the chromatic symmetric function (CSF) distinguishes unrooted trees. Previously, the best computational result, due to Russell, proved that it distinguishes all trees with at most $25$ vertices. In this paper, we present a novel probabilistic algorithm which may be used to check more efficiently that the CSF distinguishes a set of trees. Applying it, we verify that the CSF distinguishes all trees with up to $29$ vertices.
Exploring a Delta Schur Conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
In \cite{HRW15}, Haglund, Remmel, Wilson state a conjecture which predicts a purely combinatorial way of obtaining the symmetric function $Δ_{e_k}e_n$. It is called the Delta Conjecture. It was recently proved in \cite{GHRY} that the Delta Conjecture is true when either $q=0$ or $t=0$. In this paper we complete a work initiated by Remmel whose initial aim was to explore the symmetric function $Δ_{s_ν} e_n$ by the same methods developed in \cite{GHRY}. Our first need here is a method for constructing a symmetric function that may be viewed as a "combinatorial side" for the symmetric function $Δ_{s_ν} e_n$ for $t=0$. Based on what was discovered in \cite{GHRY} we conjectured such a construction mechanism. We prove here that in the case that $ν=(m-k,1^k)$ with $1\le m< n$ the equality of the two sides can be established by the same methods used in \cite{GHRY}. While this work was in progress, we learned that Rhodes and Shimozono had previously constructed also such a "combinatorial side". Very recently, Jim Haglund was able to prove that their conjecture follows from the results in \cite{GHRY}. We show here that an appropriate modification of the Haglund arguments proves that the polynomial $Δ_{s_ν}e_n$ as well as the Rhoades-Shimozono "combinatorial side" have a plethystic evaluation with hook Schur function expansion.

Remarks on Graphons

L. Lovász and B. Szegedy proved in 2006 that the limits of convergent graph sequences can be described by measurable symmetric functions $W: [0, 1]\times [0, 1]\to [0, 1]$ called graphons. In our present paper we investigate the structure of the set of all graphons within the semigroup $(\mathfrak{F}([0, 1]^2); \circ)$ of all fuzzy subsets of the unit square $[0,1]^2=[0, 1]\times [0, 1]$, where the operation $\circ$ is defined by: for every $f, g\in \mathfrak{F}([0,1]^2)$ and every $s\in [0,1]^2$, $(f\circ g)(s)=\vee_{x\in [0,1]^2}(f(x)\wedge g(s))$.
Closed formulas for exponential sums of symmetric polynomials over Galois fields
Published in Journal Algebraic Combinatorics 50(1) (2019) 73-98 • View PublicationBIB
Exponential sums have applications to a variety of scientific fields, including, but not limited to, cryptography, coding theory and information theory. Closed formulas for exponential sums of symmetric Boolean functions were found by Cai, Green and Thierauf in the late 1990's. Their closed formulas imply that these exponential sums are linear recursive. The linear recursivity of these sums has been exploited in numerous papers and has been used to compute the asymptotic behavior of such sequences. In this article, we extend the result of Cai, Green and Thierauf, that is, we find closed formulas for exponential sums of symmetric polynomials over any Galois fields. Our result also implies that the recursive nature of these sequences is not unique to the binary field, as they are also linear recursive over any finite field. In fact, we provide explicit linear recurrences with integer coefficients for such sequences. As a byproduct of our results, we discover a link between exponential sums of symmetric polynomials over Galois fields and a problem for multinomial coefficients which similar to the problem of bisecting binomial coefficients.

The center of the twisted Heisenberg category, factorial Schur $Q$-functions, and transition functions on the Schur graph
We establish an isomorphism between the center of the twisted Heisenberg category and the subalgebra of the symmetric functions $Γ$ generated by odd power sums. We give a graphical description of the factorial Schur $Q$-functions as closed diagrams in the twisted Heisenberg category and show that the bubble generators of the center correspond to two sets of generators of $Γ$ which encode data related to up/down transition functions on the Schur graph. Finally, we describe an action of the trace of the twisted Heisenberg category, the $W$-algebra $W^-\subset W_{1+\infty}$, on $Γ$.

Interpolation Macdonald polynomials and Cauchy-type identities
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 162 (2019), 65-117 • View PublicationBIB
Let Sym denote the algebra of symmetric functions and $P_μ(\,\cdot\,;q,t)$ and $Q_μ(\,\cdot\,;q,t)$ be the Macdonald symmetric functions (recall that they differ by scalar factors only). The $(q,t)$-Cauchy identity $$ \sum_μP_μ(x_1,x_2,\dots;q,t)Q_μ(y_1,y_2,\dots;q,t)=\prod_{i,j=1}^\infty\frac{(x_iy_jt;q)_\infty}{(x_iy_j;q)_\infty} $$ expresses the fact that the $P_μ(\,\cdot\,;q,t)$'s form an orthogonal basis in Sym with respect to a special scalar product $\langle\,\cdot\,,\,\cdot\,\rangle_{q,t}$. The present paper deals with the inhomogeneous \emph{interpolation} Macdonald symmetric functions $$ I_μ(x_1,x_2,\dots;q,t)=P_μ(x_1,x_2,\dots;q,t)+\text{lower degree terms}. $$ These functions come from the $N$-variate interpolation Macdonald polynomials, extensively studied in the 90's by Knop, Okounkov, and Sahi. The goal of the paper is to construct symmetric functions $J_μ(\,\cdot\,;q,t)$ with the biorthogonality property $$ \langle I_μ(\,\cdot\,;q,t), J_ν(\,\cdot\,;q,t)\rangle_{q,t}=δ_{μν}. $$ These new functions live in a natural completion of the algebra Sym. As a corollary one obtains a new Cauchy-type identity in which the interpolation Macdonald polynomials are paired with certain multivariate rational symmetric functions. The degeneration of this identity in the Jack limit is also described.
On the matchings-Jack and hypermap-Jack conjectures for labelled matchings and star hypermaps
Published • View PublicationBIB
Introduced by Goulden and Jackson in their 1996 paper, the matchings-Jack conjecture and the hypermap-Jack conjecture (also known as the $b$-conjecture) are two major open questions relating Jack symmetric functions, the representation theory of the symmetric groups and combinatorial maps. They show that the coefficients in the power sum expansion of some Cauchy sum for Jack symmetric functions and in the logarithm of the same sum interpolate respectively between the structure constants of the class algebra and the double coset algebra of the symmetric group and between the numbers of orientable and locally orientable hypermaps. They further provide some evidence that these two families of coefficients indexed by three partitions of a given integer $n$ and the Jack parameter $α$ are polynomials in $β= α-1$ with non negative integer coefficients of combinatorial significance. This paper is devoted to the case when one of the three partitions is equal to $(n)$. We exhibit some polynomial properties of both families of coefficients and prove a variation of the hypermap-Jack conjecture and the matchings-Jack conjecture involving labelled hypermaps and matchings in some important cases.

Yang-Baxter field for spin Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Employing bijectivisation of summation identities, we introduce local stochastic moves based on the Yang-Baxter equation for $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}_2})$. Combining these moves leads to a new object which we call the spin Hall-Littlewood Yang-Baxter field - a probability distribution on two-dimensional arrays of particle configurations on the discrete line. We identify joint distributions along down-right paths in the Yang-Baxter field with spin Hall-Littlewood processes, a generalization of Schur processes. We consider various degenerations of the Yang-Baxter field leading to new dynamic versions of the stochastic six vertex model and of the Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process.

A flag variety for the Delta Conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Delta Conjecture of Haglund, Remmel, and Wilson predicts the monomial expansion of the symmetric function $Δ'_{e_{k-1}} e_n$, where $k \leq n$ are positive integers and $Δ'_{e_{k-1}}$ is a Macdonald eigenoperator. When $k = n$, the specialization $Δ'_{e_{n-1}} e_n|_{t = 0}$ is the Frobenius image of the graded $S_n$-module afforded by the cohomology ring of the {\em flag variety} consisting of complete flags in $\mathbb{C}^n$. We define and study a variety $X_{n,k}$ which carries an action of $S_n$ whose cohomology ring $H^{\bullet}(X_{n,k})$ has Frobenius image given by $Δ'_{e_{k-1}} e_n|_{t = 0}$, up to a minor twist. The variety $X_{n,k}$ has a cellular decomposition with cells $C_w$ indexed by length $n$ words $w = w_1 \dots w_n$ in the alphabet $\{1, 2, \dots, k\}$ in which each letter appears at least once. When $k = n$, the variety $X_{n,k}$ is homotopy equivalent to the flag variety. We give a presentation for the cohomology ring $H^{\bullet}(X_{n,k})$ as a quotient of the polynomial ring $\mathbb{Z}[x_1, \dots, x_n]$ and describe polynomial representatives for the classes $[ \overline{C}_w]$ of the closures of the cells $C_w$; these representatives generalize the classical Schubert polynomials.
