Lattice paths and branched continued fractions: An infinite sequence of generalizations of the Stieltjes--Rogers and Thron--Rogers polynomials, with coefficientwise Hankel-total positivity
We define an infinite sequence of generalizations, parametrized by an integer $m \ge 1$, of the Stieltjes--Rogers and Thron--Rogers polynomials; they arise as the power-series expansions of some branched continued fractions, and as the generating polynomials for $m$-Dyck and $m$-Schröder paths with height-dependent weights. We prove that all of these sequences of polynomials are coefficientwise Hankel-totally positive, jointly in all the (infinitely many) indeterminates. We then apply this theory to prove the coefficientwise Hankel-total positivity for combinatorially interesting sequences of polynomials. Enumeration of unlabeled ordered trees and forests gives rise to multivariate Fuss--Narayana polynomials and Fuss--Narayana symmetric functions. Enumeration of increasing (labeled) ordered trees and forests gives rise to multivariate Eulerian polynomials and Eulerian symmetric functions, which include the univariate $m$th-order Eulerian polynomials as specializations. We also find branched continued fractions for ratios of contiguous hypergeometric series ${}_r \! F_s$ for arbitrary $r$ and $s$, which generalize Gauss' continued fraction for ratios of contiguous ${}_2 \! F_1$; and for $s=0$ we prove the coefficientwise Hankel-total positivity. Finally, we extend the branched continued fractions to ratios of contiguous basic hypergeometric series ${}_r \! φ_s$.

We give local axioms that uniquely characterize the crystal-like structure on shifted tableaux developed in a previous paper by Gillespie, Levinson, and Purbhoo. These axioms closely resemble those developed by Stembridge for type A tableau crystals. This axiomatic characterization gives rise to a new method for proving and understanding Schur $Q$-positive expansions in symmetric function theory, just as the Stembridge axiomatic structure provides for ordinary Schur positivity.

We revisit the Bose-Mesner algebra of the perfect matching association scheme. Our main results are:
1. An inductive algorithm, based on solving linear equations, to compute the eigenvalues of the orbital basis elements given the central characters of the symmetric groups.
2. Universal formulas, as content evaluations of symmetric functions, for the eigenvalues of fixed orbitals.
3. An inductive construction of an eigenvector (the so called first Gelfand-Tsetlin vector) in each eigenspace leading to a different inductive algorithm (not using central characters) for the eigenvalues of the orbital basis elements.

We study the back stable Schubert calculus of the infinite flag variety. Our main results are: 1) a formula for back stable (double) Schubert classes expressing them in terms of a symmetric function part and a finite part; 2) a novel definition of double and triple Stanley symmetric functions; 3) a proof of the positivity of double Edelman-Greene coefficients generalizing the results of Edelman-Greene and Lascoux-Schutzenberger; 4) the definition of a new class of bumpless pipedreams, giving new formulae for double Schubert polynomials, back stable double Schubert polynomials, and a new form of the Edelman-Greene insertion algorithm; 5) the construction of the Peterson subalgebra of the infinite nilHecke algebra, extending work of Peterson in the affine case; 6) equivariant Pieri rules for the homology of the infinite Grassmannian; 7) homology divided difference operators that create the equivariant homology Schubert classes of the infinite Grassmannian.

An involution in a Coxeter group has an associated set of involution words, a variation on reduced words. These words are saturated chains in a partial order first considered by Richardson and Springer in their study of symmetric varieties. In the symmetric group, involution words can be enumerated in terms of tableaux using appropriate analogues of the symmetric functions introduced by Stanley to accomplish the same task for reduced words. We adapt this approach to the group of signed permutations. We show that involution words for the longest element in the Coxeter group $C_n$ are in bijection with reduced words for the longest element in $A_n = S_{n+1}$, which are known to be in bijection with standard tableaux of shape $(n, n-1, \ldots, 2, 1)$.

The paper deals with a three-dimensional family of diffusion processes on an infinite-dimensional simplex. These processes were constructed by Borodin and Olshanski (arXiv:0706.1034; arXiv:0902.3395), and they include, as limit objects, the Ethier-Kurtz's infinitely-many-neutral-allels diffusion model (1981) and its extension found by Petrov (arXiv:0708.1930).
Each process X from our family possesses a symmetrising measure M. Our main result is that the transition function of X has continuous density with respect to M. This is a generalization of earlier results due to Ethier (1992) and to Feng, Sun, Wang, and Xu (2011). Our proof substantially uses a special basis in the algebra of symmetric functions related to Laguerre polynomials.
Ansatz for $(-1)^{n-1}\nabla p_n$
We construct a special family of equivariant coherent sheaves on the Hilbert scheme on $n$-points in the affine plane. The equivariant Euler characteristic of these sheaves are closely related to the symmetic functions $(-1)^{n-1} \nabla p_n$. We prove a higher cohomology vanishing result of these sheaves. It follows from the Bridgeland-King-Reid correspondence that there is an effective $S_n$ module underlying the aforementioned family of symmetric functions.

Gorsky and Negut introduced operators $Q_{m,n}$ on symmetric functions and conjectured that, in the case where $m$ and $n$ are relatively prime, the expression ${Q}_{m,n}(1)$ is given by the Hikita polynomial ${H}_{m,n}[X;q,t]$. Later, Bergeron-Garsia-Leven-Xin extended and refined the conjectures of ${Q}_{m,n}(1)$ for arbitrary $m$ and $n$ which we call the Extended Rational Shuffle Conjecture. In the special case ${Q}_{n+1,n}(1)$, the Rational Shuffle Conjecture becomes the Shuffle Conjecture of Haglund-Haiman-Loehr-Remmel-Ulyanov, which was proved in 2015 by Carlsson and Mellit as the Shuffle Theorem. The Extended Rational Shuffle Conjecture was later proved by Mellit as the Extended Rational Shuffle Theorem. The main goal of this paper is to study the combinatorics of the coefficients that arise in the Schur function expansion of ${Q}_{m,n}(1)$ in certain special cases. Leven gave a combinatorial proof of the Schur function expansion of ${Q}_{2,2n+1}(1)$ and ${Q}_{2n+1,2}(1)$. In this paper, we explore several symmetries in the combinatorics of the coefficients that arise in the Schur function expansion of ${Q}_{m,n}(1)$. Especially, we study the hook-shaped Schur function coefficients, and the Schur function expansion of ${Q}_{m,n}(1)$ in the case where $m$ or $n$ equals $3$.
On the Fourier Entropy Influence Conjecture for Extremal Classes
The Fourier Entropy-Influence (FEI) Conjecture of Friedgut and Kalai states that ${\bf H}[f] \leq C \cdot {\bf I}[f]$ holds for every Boolean function $f$, where ${\bf H}[f]$ denotes the spectral entropy of $f$, ${\bf I}[f]$ is its total influence, and $C > 0$ is a universal constant. Despite significant interest in the conjecture it has only been shown to hold for some classes of Boolean functions such as symmetric functions and read-once formulas.
In this work, we prove the conjecture for extremal cases, functions with small influence and functions with high entropy. Specifically, we show that:
* FEI holds for the class of functions with ${\bf I}[f] \leq 2^{-cn}$ with the constant $C = 4 \cdot \frac{c+1}{c}$. Furthermore, proving FEI for a class of functions with ${\bf I}[f] \leq 2^{-s(n)}$ for some $s(n) = o(n)$ will imply FEI for the class of all Boolean functions.
* FEI holds for the class of functions with ${\bf H}[f] \geq cn$ with the constant $C = \frac{1 + c}{h^{-1}(c^2)}$. Furthermore, proving FEI for a class of functions with ${\bf H}[f] \geq s(n)$ for some $s(n) = o(n)$ will imply FEI for the class of all Boolean functions.
Additionally, we show that FEI holds for the class of functions with constant $\|\widehat{f}\|_1$, completing the results of Chakhraborty et al. that bounded the entropy of such functions. We also improve the result of Wan et al. for read-k decision trees, from ${\bf H}[f] \leq O(k) \cdot {\bf I}[f]$ to ${\bf H}[f] \leq O(\sqrt{k}) \cdot {\bf I}[f]$. Finally, we suggest a direction for proving FEI for read-k DNFs, and prove the Fourier Min-Entropy/Influence (FMEI) Conjecture for regular read-k DNFs.
Boolean product polynomials and Schur-positivity
We study a family of symmetric polynomials that we refer to as the Boolean product polynomials. The motivation for studying these polynomials stems from the computation of the characteristic polynomial of the real matroid spanned by the nonzero vectors in $\mathbb{R}^n$ all of whose coordinates are either $0$ or $1$. To this end, one approach is to compute the zeros of the Boolean product polynomials over finite fields. The zero loci of these polynomials cut out hyperplane arrangements known as resonance arrangements, which show up in the context of double Hurwitz polynomials. By relating the Boolean product polynomials to certain total Chern classes of vector bundles, we establish their Schur-positivity by appealing to a result of Pragacz relying on earlier work on numerical positivity by Fulton-Lazarsfeld. Subsequently, we study a two-alphabet version of these polynomials from the viewpoint of Schur-positivity. As a special case of these polynomials, we recover symmetric functions first studied by Désarménien and Wachs in the context of descents in derangements.

We present positivity conjectures for the Schur expansion of Jack symmetric functions in two bases given by binomial coefficients. Partial results suggest that there are rich combinatorics to be found in these bases, including Eulerian numbers, Stirling numbers, quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux, and rook boards. These results also lead to further conjectures about the fundamental quasisymmetric expansions of these bases, which we prove for special cases.
Diagonal asymptotics for symmetric rational functions via ACSV
We consider asymptotics of power series coefficients of rational functions of the form $1/Q$ where $Q$ is a symmetric multilinear polynomial. We review a number of such cases from the literature, chiefly concerned either with positivity of coefficients or diagonal asymptotics. We then analyze coefficient asymptotics using ACSV (Analytic Combinatorics in Several Variables) methods. While ACSV sometimes requires considerable overhead and geometric computation, in the case of symmetric multilinear rational functions there are some reductions that streamline the analysis. Our results include diagonal asymptotics across entire classes of functions, for example the general 3-variable case and the Gillis-Reznick-Zeilberger (GRZ) case, where the denominator in terms of elementary symmetric functions is $1 - e_1 + c e_d$ in any number $d$ of variables. The ACSV analysis also explains a discontinuous drop in exponential growth rate for the GRZ class at the parameter value $c = (d-1)^{d-1}$, previously observed for $d=4$ only by separately computing diagonal recurrences for critical and noncritical values of $c$.
A combinatorial model for $\nabla m_μ$
The modified Macdonald polynomials introduced by Garsia and Haiman (1996) have many remarkable combinatorial properties. One such class of properties involves applying the $\nabla$ operator of Bergeron and Garsia (1999) to basic symmetric functions. The first discovery of this type was the Shuffle Conjecture of Haglund, Haiman, Loehr, Remmel, and Ulyanov (2005), which relates the expression $\nabla e_n$ to parking functions. A refinement of this conjecture, called the Compositional Shuffle Conjecture, was introduced by Haglund, Morse, and Zabrocki (2012) and proved by Carlsson and Mellit (2015).
We give a symmetric function identity relating hook monomial symmetric functions to the operators used in the Compositional Shuffle Conjecture. This implies a parking function interpretation for nabla of a hook monomial symmetric function, as well as LLT positivity. We show that our identity is a $q$-analog of the expansion of a hook monomial into complete homogeneous symmetric functions given by Kulikauskas and Remmel (2006). We use this connection to conjecture a model for expanding $\nabla m_μ$ in this way when $μ$ is not a hook.
Cylindric symmetric functions and positivity

We introduce new families of cylindric symmetric functions as subcoalgebras in the ring of symmetric functions $Λ$ (viewed as a Hopf algebra) which have non-negative structure constants. Combinatorially these cylindric symmetric functions are defined as weighted sums over cylindric reverse plane partitions or - alternatively - in terms of sets of affine permutations. We relate their combinatorial definition to an algebraic construction in terms of the principal Heisenberg subalgebra of the affine Lie algebra $\mathfrak{\widehat{sl}}_n$ and a specialised cyclotomic Hecke algebra. Using Schur-Weyl duality we show that the new cylindric symmetric functions arise as matrix elements of Lie algebra elements in the subspace of symmetric tensors of a particular level-0 module which can be identified with the small quantum cohomology ring of the $k$-fold product of projective space. The analogous construction in the subspace of alternating tensors gives the known set of cylindric Schur functions which are related to the small quantum cohomology ring of Grassmannians. We prove that cylindric Schur functions form a subcoalgebra in $Λ$ whose structure constants are the 3-point genus 0 Gromov-Witten invariants. We show that the new families of cylindric functions obtained from the subspace of symmetric tensors also share the structure constants of a symmetric Frobenius algebra, which we define in terms of tensor multiplicities of the generalised symmetric group $G(n,1,k)$.

We define a new basis of the algebra of quasi-symmetric functions by lifting the cycle-index polynomials of symmetric groups to noncommutative polynomials with coefficients in the algebra of free quasi-symmetric functions, and then projecting the coefficients to $QSym$. By duality, we obtain a basis of noncommutative symmetric functions, for which a product formula and a recurrence in the form of a combinatorial complex are obtained. This basis allows to identify noncommutative symmetric functions with the quotient of FQSym induced by the pattern-replacement relation $321 \equiv 231$ and $312 \equiv 132$.

We discuss connection between the XXZ Heisenberg spin chain in the limiting case of zero anisotropy and some aspects of enumerative combinatorics. The representation of the Bethe wave functions via the Schur functions allows to apply the theory of symmetric functions to calculation of the correlation functions. We provide a combinatorial derivation of the dynamical correlation functions of the projection operator in terms of nests of self-avoiding lattice paths.

Egge, Loehr, and Warrington proved a formula for the Schur function expansion of a symmetric function in terms of its expansion in fundamental quasi-symmetric functions. Their formula involves the coefficients of a modified inverse Kostka matrix. Recently Garsia and Remmel gave a simpler reformulation of Egge, Loehr, and Warrington's result, with a new proof. We give here a simple proof of Garsia and Remmel's version, using a sign-reversing involution.

In 1996 Goulden and Jackson introduced a family of coefficients $( c_{π, σ}^λ ) $ indexed by triples of partitions which arise in the power sum expansion of some Cauchy sum for Jack symmetric functions $( J^{(α)}_π)$. The coefficients $ c_{π, σ}^λ $ can be viewed as an interpolation between the structure constants of the class algebra and the double coset algebra. Goulden and Jackson suggested that the coefficients $ c_{π, σ}^λ $ are polynomials in the variable $β:= α-1$ with non-negative integer coefficients and that there is a combinatorics of matching hidden behind them. This \emph{Matchings-Jack Conjecture} remains open. Doł\oldk{e}ga and Féray showed the polynomiality of connection coefficients $c^λ_{π,σ}$ and gave the upper bound on the degrees. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the polynomial $ c_{π, σ}^λ$ to achieve this bound. We show that the leading coefficient of $ c_{π, σ}^λ$ is a positive integer and we present it in the context of Matchings-Jack Conjecture of Goulden and Jackson.

We study the chromatic symmetric function on graphs, and show that its kernel is spanned by the modular relations. We generalize this result to the chromatic quasisymmetric function on hypergraphic polytopes, a family of generalized permutahedra. We use this description of the kernel of the chromatic symmetric function to find other graph invariants that may help us tackle the tree conjecture.
A note on passing from a quasi-symmetric function expansion to a Schur function expansion of a symmetric function
Egge, Loehr and Warrington gave in \cite{ELW} a combinatorial formula that permits to convert the expansion of a symmetric function, homogeneous of degree $n$, in terms of Gessel's fundamental quasisymmetric functions into an expansion in terms of Schur functions. Surprisingly the Egge, Loehr and Warrington result may be shown to be simply equivalent to replacing the Gessel fundamental by a Schur function indexed by the same composition. In this paper we give a direct proof of the validity of this replacement. This interpretation of the result in \cite{ELW} has already been successfully applied to Schur positivity problems.
