On enumerators of Smirnov words by descents and cyclic descents
A Smirnov word is a word over the positive integers in which adjacent letters must be different. A symmetric function enumerating these words by descent number arose in the work of Shareshian and the second named author on $q$-Eulerian polynomials, where a $t$-analog of a formula of Carlitz, Scoville, and Vaughan for enumerating Smirnov words is proved. A symmetric function enumerating a circular version of these words by cyclic descent number arose in the work of the first named author on chromatic quasisymmetric functions of directed graphs, where a $t$-analog of a formula of Stanley for enumerating circular Smirnov words is proved.
In this paper we obtain new $t$-analogs of the Carlitz-Scoville-Vaughan formula and the Stanley formula in which the roles of descent number and cyclic descent number are switched. These formulas show that the Smirnov word enumerators are polynomials in $t$ whose coefficients are e-positive symmetric functions. We also obtain expansions in the power sum basis and the fundamental quasisymmetric function basis, complementing earlier results of Shareshian and the authors.
Our work relies on studying refinements of the Smirnov word enumerators that count certain restricted classes of Smirnov words by descent number. Applications to variations of $q$-Eulerian polynomials and to the chromatic quasisymmetric functions introduced by Shareshian and the second named author are also presented.

In arXiv:1605.06672 the authors introduced inhomogeneous bases of the ring of symmetric functions. The elements in these bases have the property that they evaluate to characters of symmetric groups. In this article we develop further properties of these bases by proving product and coproduct formulae. In addition, we give the transition coefficients between the elementary symmetric functions and the irreducible character basis.
Integer points enumerator of hypergraphic polytopes
For a hypergraphic polytope there is a weighted quasisymmetric function which enumerates positive integer points in its normal fan and determines its f-polynomial. This quasisymmetric function invariant of hypergraphs extends the Stanley chromatic symmetric function of simple graphs. We consider a certain combinatorial Hopf algebra of hypergraphs and show that universal morphism to quasisymmetric functions coincides with this enumerator function.

We study a family of symmetric functions $\hat F_z$ indexed by involutions $z$ in the affine symmetric group. These power series are analogues of Lam's affine Stanley symmetric functions and generalizations of the involution Stanley symmetric functions introduced by Hamaker, Pawlowski, and the first author. Our main result is to prove a transition formula for $\hat F_z$ which can be used to define an affine involution analogue of the Lascoux-Schützenberger tree. Our proof of this formula relies on Lam and Shimozono's transition formula for affine Stanley symmetric functions and some new technical properties of the strong Bruhat order on affine permutations.

We study the chromatic symmetric functions of graph classes related to spiders, namely generalized spider graphs (line graphs of spiders), and what we call horseshoe crab graphs. We show that no two generalized spiders have the same chromatic symmetric function, thereby extending the work of Martin, Morin and Wagner. Additionally, we establish that a subclass of generalized spiders, which we call generalized nets, has no e-positive members, providing a more general counterexample to the necessity of the claw-free condition. We use yet another class of generalized spiders to construct a counterexample to a problem involving the $e$-positivity of claw-free, P4-sparse graphs, showing that Tsujie's result on the e-positivity of claw-free, P4-free graphs cannot be extended to graphs in this set. Finally, we investigate the e-positivity of another type of graphs, the horseshoe crab graphs (a class of unit interval graphs), and prove the positivity of all but one of the coefficients. This has close connections to the work of Gebhard and Sagan and Cho and Huh.

We study Wronskians of Appell polynomials indexed by integer partitions. These families of polynomials appear in rational solutions of certain Painlevé equations and in the study of exceptional orthogonal polynomials. We determine their derivatives, their average and variance with respect to Plancherel measure, and introduce several recurrence relations. In addition, we prove an integrality conjecture for Wronskian Hermite polynomials previously made by the first and last authors. Our proofs all exploit strong connections with the theory of symmetric functions.
Finite diamond-colored modular and distributive lattices with applications to combinatorial Lie representation theory
A modular or distributive lattice is `diamond-colored' if its order diagram edges are colored in such a way that, within any diamond of edges, parallel edges have the same color. Such lattices arise naturally in combinatorial representation theory, particularly in the study of poset models for semisimple Lie algebra representations and their companion Weyl group symmetric functions. One of our goals is to gather in one place some elementary but foundational results concerning these lattice structures; this includes some new results as well as some new interpretations of classical results. We then develop many points of contact between diamond-colored modular/distributive lattices and combinatorial Lie representation theory, leading to some new Dynkin diagram classification results and some new results concerning minuscule and quasi-minuscule representations.
Binomial Eulerian polynomials for colored permutations
Binomial Eulerian polynomials first appeared in work of Postnikov, Reiner and Williams on the face enumeration of generalized permutohedra. They are $γ$-positive (in particular, palindromic and unimodal) polynomials which can be interpreted as $h$-polynomials of certain flag simplicial polytopes and which admit interesting Schur $γ$-positive symmetric function generalizations. This paper introduces analogues of these polynomials for $r$-colored permutations with similar properties and uncovers some new instances of equivariant $γ$-positivity in geometric combinatorics.
Poset models for Weyl group analogs of symmetric functions and Schur functions
The `Weyl symmetric functions' studied here naturally generalize classical symmetric (polynomial) functions, and `Weyl bialternants,' sometimes also called Weyl characters, analogize the Schur functions. For this generalization, the underlying symmetry group is a finite Weyl group. A `splitting poset' for a Weyl bialternant is an edge-colored ranked poset possessing a certain structural property and a natural weighting of its elements so that the weighted sum of poset elements is the given Weyl bialternant. Connected such posets are of combinatorial interest in part because they are rank symmetric and rank unimodal and have nice quotient-of-product expressions for their rank generating functions. Supporting graphs of weight bases for irreducible semisimple Lie algebra representations provide one large family of examples. However, many splitting posets can be obtained outside of this Lie theoretic context. This monograph provides a tutorial on Weyl bialternants / Weyl symmetric functions and splitting posets that is largely self-contained and independent of Lie algebra representation theory. New results are also obtained.
A q-analogue and a symmetric function analogue of a result by Carlitz, Scoville and Vaughan
We derive an equation that is analogous to a well-known symmetric function identity: $\sum_{i=0}^n(-1)^ie_ih_{n-i}=0$. Here the elementary symmetric function $e_i$ is the Frobenius characteristic of the representation of $\mathcal{S}_i$ on the top homology of the subset lattice $B_i$, whereas our identity involves the representation of $\mathcal{S}_n\times \mathcal{S}_n$ on the Segre product of $B_n$ with itself. We then obtain a q-analogue of a polynomial identity given by Carlitz, Scoville and Vaughan through examining the Segre product of the subspace lattice $B_n(q)$ with itself. We recognize the connection between the Euler characteristic of the Segre product of $B_n(q)$ with itself and the representation on the Segre product of $B_n$ with itself by recovering our polynomial identity from specializing the identity on the representation of $\mathcal{S}_i\times \mathcal{S}_i$.
Triangular Ladders $P_{d,2}$ are $e$-positive
In 1995 Stanley conjectured that the chromatic symmetric functions of the graphs $P_{d,2}$, which we call triangular ladders, were $e$-positive. In this paper we confirm this conjecture, which is also an unsolved case of the celebrated $(3+1)$-free conjecture. Our method is to follow the generalization of the chromatic symmetric functions by Gebhard and Sagan to symmetric functions in non-commuting variables. These functions satisfy a deletion-contraction property unlike the chromatic symmetric function in commuting variables. We do this by proving a new signed combinatorial formula for \emph{all} unit interval graphs on the basis of elementary symmetric functions. Then we prove $e$-positivity for triangular ladders by very carefully defining a sign-reversing involution on our signed combinatorial formula. This leaves us with certain positive terms and further allows us to expand on an already-known family of $e$-positive graphs by Gebhard and Sagan.

We make a broad conjecture about the $k$-Schur positivity of Catalan functions, symmetric functions which generalize the (parabolic) Hall-Littlewood polynomials. We resolve the conjecture with positive combinatorial formulas in cases which address the $k$-Schur expansion of (1) Hall-Littlewood polynomials, proving the $q=0$ case of the strengthened Macdonald positivity conjecture of Lapointe, Lascoux, and Morse; (2) the product of a Schur function and a $k$-Schur function when the indexing partitions concatenate to a partition, describing a class of Gromov-Witten invariants for the quantum cohomology of complete flag varieties; (3) $k$-split polynomials, proving a substantial case of a problem of Broer and Shimozono-Weyman on parabolic Hall-Littlewood polynomials. In addition, we prove the conjecture that $k$-Schur functions defined in terms of $k$-split polynomials agree with strong tableau $k$-Schur functions.
Bumpless Pipedreams, Reduced Word Tableaux and Stanley Symmetric Functions
Lam, Lee and Shimozono introduced the structure of bumpless pipedreams in their study of back stable Schubert calculus. They found that a specific family of bumpless pipedreams, called EG-pipedreams, can be used to interpret the Edelman-Greene coefficients appearing in the expansion of a Stanley symmetric function in the basis of Schur functions. It is well known that the Edelman-Greene coefficients can also be interpreted in terms of reduced word tableaux for permutations. Lam, Lee and Shimozono proposed the problem of finding a shape preserving bijection between reduced word tableaux for a permutation $w$ and EG-pipedreams of $w$. In this paper, we construct such a bijection. The key ingredients are two new developed isomorphic tree structures associated to $w$: the modified Lascoux-Schützenberger tree of $w$ and the Edelman-Greene tree of $w$. Using the Little map, we show that the leaves in the modified Lascoux-Schützenberger of $w$ are in bijection with the reduced word tableaux for $w$. On the other hand, applying the droop operation on bumpless pipedreams also introduced by Lam, Lee and Shimozono, we show that the leaves in the Edelman-Greene tree of $w$ are in bijection with the EG-pipedreams of $w$. This allows us to establish a shape preserving one-to-one correspondence between reduced word tableaux for $w$ and EG-pipedreams of $w$.

We present positivity conjectures for the Schur expansion of Jack symmetric functions in two bases given by binomial coefficients. Partial results suggest that there are rich combinatorics to be found in these bases, including Eulerian numbers, Stirling numbers, quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux, and rook boards. These results also lead to further conjectures about the fundamental quasisymmetric expansions of these bases, which we prove for special cases.

Given an element in a finite-dimensional real vector space, $V$, that is a nonnegative linear combination of basis vectors for some basis $B$, we compute the probability that it is furthermore a nonnegative linear combination of basis vectors for a second basis, $A$. We then apply this general result to combinatorially compute the probability that a symmetric function is Schur-positive (recovering the recent result of Bergeron--Patrias--Reiner), $e$-positive or $h$-positive. Similarly we compute the probability that a quasisymmetric function is quasisymmetric Schur-positive or fundamental-positive. In every case we conclude that the probability tends to zero as the degree of a function tends to infinity.

This article serves as an introduction to several recent developments in the study of quasisymmetric functions. The focus of this survey is on connections between quasisymmetric functions and the combinatorial Hopf algebra of noncommutative symmetric functions, appearances of quasisymmetric functions within the theory of Macdonald polynomials, and analogues of symmetric functions. Topics include the significance of quasisymmetric functions in representation theory (such as representations of the 0-Hecke algebra), recently discovered bases (including analogues of well-studied symmetric function bases), and applications to open problems in symmetric function theory.
The genomic Schur function is fundamental-positive

In work with A. Yong, the author introduced genomic tableaux to prove the first positive combinatorial rule for the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients in torus-equivariant $K$-theory of Grassmannians. We then studied the genomic Schur function $U_λ$, a generating function for such tableaux, showing that it is non-trivially a symmetric function, although generally not Schur-positive. Here we show that $U_λ$ is, however, positive in the basis of fundamental quasisymmetric functions. We give a positive combinatorial formula for this expansion in terms of gapless increasing tableaux; this is, moreover, the first finite expression for $U_λ$. Combined with work of A. Garsia and J. Remmel, this yields a compact combinatorial (but necessarily non-positive) formula for the Schur expansion of $U_λ$.

Let $s_ν\circ s_μ$ denote the plethystic product of the Schur functions $s_ν$ and $s_μ$. In this article we define an explicit polynomial representation corresponding to $s_ν\circ s_μ$ with basis indexed by certain `plethystic' semistandard tableaux. Using these representations we prove generalizations of four results on plethysms due to Bruns--Conca--Varbaro, Brion, Ikenmeyer and the authors. In particular, we give a sufficient condition for the multiplicity $\langle s_ν\circ s_μ, s_λ\rangle$ to be stable under insertion of new parts into $μ$ and $λ$. We also characterize all maximal and minimal partitions $λ$ in the dominance order such that $s_λ$ appears in $s_ν\circ s_μ$ and determine the corresponding multiplicities using plethystic semistandard tableaux.
Pattern groups and a poset based Hopf monoid

The supercharacter theory of algebra groups gave us a representation theoretic realization of the Hopf algebra of symmetric functions in noncommuting variables. The underlying representation theoretic framework comes equipped with two canonical bases, one of which was completely new in terms of symmetric functions. This paper simultaneously generalizes this Hopf structure by considering a larger class of groups while also restricting the representation theory to a more combinatorially tractable one. Using the normal lattice supercharacter theory of pattern groups, we not only gain a third canonical basis, but also are able to compute numerous structure constants in the corresponding Hopf monoid, including coproducts and antipodes for the new bases.

We prove that the vanishings of the modified diagonal cycles of Gross and Schoen govern the $\mathbb{Z}$-linear relations between small $m$-diagonals $\text{pt}^{\{1,\ldots,n\}\setminus A}\timesΔ_A$ in the rational Chow ring of $X^n$ for $A$ ranging over $m$-element subsets of $\{1,\ldots,n\}$. Our results generalize to arbitrary symmetric classes in place of the diagonal in $X^m$, and with different types of inclusions $A^\bullet(X^m)_{\mathbb{Q}}^{S_m} \hookrightarrow A^\bullet(X^n)_{\mathbb{Q}}$.
The combinatorial heart of this paper, which may be of independent interest, is showing the $\mathbb{Z}$-linear relations between elementary symmetric polynomials $e_k(x_{a_1},\ldots,x_{a_m}) \in \mathbb{Z}[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ are generated by the $S_n$-translates of a certain alternating sum over the facets of a hyperoctahedron.
