Our first result realizes the toric variety of every marked chain-order polytope (MCOP) of the Gelfand--Tsetlin poset as an explicit Gröbner (sagbi) degeneration of the flag variety. This generalizes the Sturmfels/Gonciulea--Lakshmibai/Kogan--Miller construction for the Gelfand--Tsetlin degeneration to the MCOP setting. The key idea of our approach is to use pipe dreams to define realizations of toric varieties in Plücker coordinates. We then use this approach to generalize two more well-known constructions to arbitrary MCOPs: standard monomial theories such as those given by semistandard Young tableaux and PBW-monomial bases in irreducible representations such as the FFLV bases. In an addendum we introduce the notion of semi-infinite pipe dreams and use it to obtain an infinite family of poset polytopes each providing a toric degeneration of the semi-infinite Grassmannian.

A new descent set statistic on involutions, defined geometrically via their interpretation as matchings, is introduced in this paper, and shown to be equi-distributed with the standard one. This concept is then applied to construct explicit cyclic descent extensions on involutions, standard Young tableaux and Motzkin paths. Schur-positivity of the associated quasisymmetric functions follows.

We describe one-dimensional central measures on numberings (tableaux) of ideals of partially ordered sets (posets). As the main example, we study the poset ${\Bbb Z}_+^d$ and the graph of its finite ideals, multidimensional Young tableaux; for $d=2$, it is the ordinary Young graph. The central measures are stratified by dimension; in the paper we give a complete description of the one-dimensional stratum and prove that every ergodic central measure is uniquely determined by its frequencies. The suggested method, in particular, gives the first purely combinatorial proof of E.~Thoma's theorem for one-dimensional central measures different from the Plancherel measure (which is of dimension~$2$).
Maximal chain descent orders
This paper introduces a partial order on the maximal chains of any finite bounded poset $P$ which has a CL-labeling $λ$. We call this the maximal chain descent order induced by $λ$, denoted $P_λ(2)$. As a first example, letting $P$ be the Boolean lattice and $λ$ its standard EL-labeling gives $P_λ(2)$ isomorphic to the weak order of type A. We discuss in depth other seemingly well-structured examples: the max-min EL-labeling of the partition lattice gives maximal chain descent order isomorphic to a partial order on certain labeled trees, and particular cases of the linear extension EL-labelings of finite distributive lattices produce maximal chain descent orders isomorphic to partial orders on standard Young tableaux. We observe that the order relations which one might expect to be the cover relations, those given by the "polygon moves" whose transitive closure defines the maximal chain descent order, are not always cover relations. Several examples illustrate this fact. Nonetheless, we characterize the EL-labelings for which every polygon move gives a cover relation, and we prove many well known EL-labelings do have the expected cover relations. One motivation for $P_λ(2)$ is that its linear extensions give all of the shellings of the order complex of $P$ whose restriction maps are defined by the descents with respect to $λ$. This yields strictly more shellings of $P$ than the lexicographic ones induced by $λ$. Thus, the maximal chain descent order $P_λ(2)$ might be thought of as encoding the structure of the set of shellings induced by $λ$.

Propp recently introduced regions in the hexagonal grid called benzels and stated several enumerative conjectures about the tilings of benzels using two types of prototiles called stones and bones. We resolve two of his conjectures and prove some additional results that he left tacit. In order to solve these problems, we first transfer benzels into the square grid. One of our primary tools, which we combine with several new ideas, is a bijection (rediscovered by Stanton and White and often attributed to them although it is considerably older) between $k$-ribbon tableaux of certain skew shapes and certain $k$-tuples of Young tableaux.

A fundamental identity in the representation theory of the partition algeba is $n^k = \sum_λ f^λm_k^λ$ for $n \geq 2k$, where $λ$ ranges over integer partitions of $n$, $f^λ$ is the number of standard Young tableaux of shape $λ$, and $m_k^λ$ is the number of vacillating tableaux of shape $λ$ and length $2k$. Using a combination of RSK insertion and jeu de taquin, Halverson and Lewandowski constructed a bijection $DI_n^k$ that maps each integer sequence in $[n]^k$ to a pair consisting of a standard Young tableau and a vacillating tableau. In this paper, we show that for a given integer sequence $\boldsymbol{i}$, when $n$ is sufficiently large, the vacillating tableaux determined by $DI_n^k(\boldsymbol{i})$ become stable when $n \rightarrow \infty$; the limit is called the limiting vacillating tableau for $\boldsymbol{i}$. We give a characterization of the set of limiting vacillating tableaux and presents explicit formulas that enumerate those vacillating tableaux.
Grammic monoids with three generators

Young tableaux are combinatorial objects whose construction can be achieved from words over a finite alphabet by row or column insertion as shown by Schensted sixty years ago. Recently Abram and Reutenauer studied the action the free monoid on the set of columns by slightly adapting the insertion algorithm. Since the number of columns is finite, this action yields a finite transformation monoid. Here we consider the action on the set of rows. We investigate this infinite monoid in the case of a 3 letter alphabet. In particular we show that it is the quotient of the free monoid relative to a congruence generated by the classical Knuth rules plus a unique extra rule.
Underlying Flag Polymatroids

We describe a natural geometric relationship between matroids and underlying flag matroids by relating the geometry of the greedy algorithm to monotone path polytopes. This perspective allows us to generalize the construction of underlying flag matroids to polymatroids. We show that the polytopes associated to underlying flag polymatroid are simple by proving that they are normally equivalent to certain nestohedra. We use this to show that polymatroids realized by subspace arrangements give rise to smooth toric varieties in flag varieties and we interpret our construction in terms of toric quotients. We give various examples that illustrate the rich combinatorial structure of flag polymatroids. Finally, we study general monotone paths on polymatroid polytopes, that relate to the enumeration of certain Young tableaux.
Enumeration of Odd Dimensional Partitions modulo 4
The number of standard Young tableaux of shape a partition $λ$ is called the dimension of the partition and is denoted by $f^λ$. Partitions with odd dimensions were enumerated by McKay and were further characterized by Macdonald. Let $a_i(n)$ be the number of partitions of $n$ with dimension congruent to $i$ modulo 4. In this paper, we refine Macdonald's and McKay's results by computing $a_1(n)$ and $a_3(n)$ when $n$ has no consecutive 1s in its binary expansion or when the sum of binary digits of $n$ is 2.
On five types of crucial permutations with respect to monotone patterns

A crucial permutation is a permutation that avoids a given set of prohibitions, but any of its extensions, in an allowable way, results in a prohibition being introduced.
In this paper, we introduce five natural types of crucial permutations with respect to monotone patterns, notably quadrocrucial permutations that are linked most closely to Erdős-Szekeres extremal permutations. The way we define right-crucial and bicrucial permutations is consistent with the definition of respective permutations studied in the literature in the contexts of other prohibitions. For each of the five types, we provide its characterization in terms of Young tableaux via the RSK correspondence. Moreover, we use the characterizations to prove that the number of such permutations of length $n$ is growing when $n\to\infty$, and to enumerate minimal crucial permutations in all but one case. We also provide other enumerative results.
Enumeration of Tableaux of Unusual Shapes
In this thesis we enumerate standard young tableaux (SYT) of certain truncated skew shapes, which we call battery shapes. This is motivated by a chess problem. In an enumerative chess problem, the set of moves in the solution is (usually) unique, but the order is not. The task of counting the feasible permutations may be accomplished by solving an equivalent problem in enumerative combinatorics. Almost all such problems have been of a special type known as series movers. In this thesis we use generalized hypergeometric functions to enumerate SYT of battery shapes, and thus solve a chess problem posed by Buchanan.

We study the asymptotic behaviour of random integer partitions under a new probability law that we introduce, the Plancherel-Hurwitz measure. This distribution, which has a natural definition in terms of Young tableaux, is a deformation of the classical Plancherel measure which appears naturally in the context of Hurwitz numbers, enumerating certain transposition factorisations in symmetric groups.
We study a regime in which the number of factors in the underlying factorisations grows linearly with the order of the group, and the corresponding topological objects, Hurwitz maps, are of high genus. We prove that the limiting behaviour exhibits a new, twofold, phenomenon: the first part becomes very large, while the rest of the partition has the standard Vershik-Kerov-Logan-Shepp limit shape. As a consequence, we obtain asymptotic estimates for unconnected Hurwitz numbers with linear Euler characteristic, which we use to study random Hurwitz maps in this regime. This result can also be interpreted as the return probability of the transposition random walk on the symmetric group after linearly many steps.
Folding rotationally symmetrical tableaux via webs

Rectangular standard Young tableaux with 2 or 3 rows are in bijection with $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$-webs and $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_3)$-webs respectively. When $W$ is a web with a reflection symmetry, the corresponding tableau $T_W$ has a rotational symmetry. Folding $T_W$ transforms it into a domino tableau $D_W$. We study the relationships between these correspondences. For 2-row tableaux, folding a rotationally symmetric tableau corresponds to "literally folding" the web along its axis of symmetry. For $3$-row tableaux, we give simple algorithms, which provide direct bijective maps between symmetrical webs and domino tableaux (in both directions). These details of these algorithms reflect the intuitive idea that $D_W$ corresponds to "$W$ modulo symmetry".
The poset of Specht ideals for hyperoctahedral groups

Specht polynomials classically realize the irreducible representations of the symmetric group. The ideals defined by these polynomials provide a strong connection with the combinatorics of Young tableaux and have been intensively studied by several authors. We initiate similar investigations for the ideals defined by the Specht polynomials associated to the hyperoctahedral group $B_n$. We introduce a bidominance order on bipartitions which describes the poset of inclusions of these ideals and study algebraic consequences on general $B_n$-invariant ideals and varieties, which can lead to computational simplifications.
A bijection between $K$-Kohnert diagrams and reverse set-valued tableaux

Lascoux polynomials are $K$-theoretic analogues of the key polynomials. They both have combinatorial formulas involving tableaux: reverse set-valued tableaux ($\mathsf{RSVT}$) rule for Lascoux polynomials and reverse semistandard Young tableaux ($\mathsf{RSSYT}$) rule for key polynomials. Furthermore, key polynomials have a simple algorithmic model in terms of Kohnert diagrams, which are in bijection with $\mathsf{RSSYT}$. Ross and Yong introduced $K$-Kohnert diagrams, which are analogues of Kohnert diagrams. They conjectured a $K$-Kohnert diagram rule for Lascoux polynomials. We establish this conjecture by constructing a weight-preserving bijection between $\mathsf{RSVT}$ and $K$-Kohnert diagrams.

We characterize the bipartite graphs that minimize the (first-degree based) entropy, among all bipartite graphs of given size, or given size and (upper bound on the) order. The extremal graphs turn out to be complete bipartite graphs, or nearly complete bipartite. Here we make use of an equivalent representation of bipartite graphs by means of Young tableaux, which make it easier to compare the entropy of related graphs. We conclude that the general characterization of the extremal graphs is a difficult problem, due to its connections with number theory, but they are easy to find for specific values of the order $n$ and size $m$. We also give a direct argument to characterize the graphs maximizing the entropy given order and size. We indicate that some of our ideas extend to other degree-based topological indices as well.

Promotion and rowmotion are intriguing actions in dynamical algebraic combinatorics which have inspired much work in recent years. In this paper, we study $P$-strict labelings of a finite, graded poset $P$ of rank $n$ and labels at most $q$, which generalize semistandard Young tableaux with $n$ rows and entries at most $q$, under promotion. These $P$-strict labelings are in equivariant bijection with $Q$-partitions under rowmotion, where $Q$ equals the product of $P$ and a chain of $q-n-1$ elements. We study the case where $P$ equals the product of chains in detail, yielding new homomesy and order results in the realm of tableaux and beyond. Furthermore, we apply the bijection to the cases in which $P$ is a minuscule poset and when $P$ is the three element $V$ poset. Finally, we give resonance results for promotion on $P$-strict labelings and rowmotion on $Q$-partitions.
A Multigraph Approach for Performing the Quantum Schur Transform
We take inspiration from the Okounkov-Vershik approach to the representation theory of the symmetric groups to develop a new way of understanding how the Schur-Weyl duality can be used to perform the Quantum Schur Transform. The Quantum Schur Transform is a unitary change of basis transformation between the computational basis of $(\mathbb{C}^d)^{\otimes n}$ and the Schur-Weyl basis of $(\mathbb{C}^d)^{\otimes n}$. We describe a new multigraph, which we call the Schur-Weyl-Young graph, that represents both standard Weyl tableaux and standard Young tableaux in the same diagram. We suggest a major improvement on Louck's formula for calculating the transition amplitudes between two standard Weyl tableaux appearing in adjacent levels of the Schur-Weyl-Young graph for the case $d=2$, merely by looking at the entries in the two tableaux. The key theoretical component that underpins our results is the discovery of a branching rule for the Schur-Weyl states, which we call the Schur-Weyl branching rule. This branching rule allows us to perform the change of basis transformation described above in a straightforward manner for any $n$ and $d$.

The Burge correspondence yields a bijection between simple labelled graphs and semistandard Young tableaux of threshold shape. We characterize the simple graphs of hook shape by peak and valley conditions on Burge arrays. This is the first step towards an analogue of Schensted's result for the RSK insertion which states that the length of the longest increasing subword of a word is the length of the largest row of the tableau under the RSK correspondence. Furthermore, we give a crystal structure on simple graphs of hook shape. The extremal vectors in this crystal are precisely the simple graphs whose degree sequence are threshold and hook-shaped.
