Stirling permutations, cycle structures of permutations and perfect matchings
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we provide a unified combinatorial approach to establish a connection between Stirling permutations, cycle structures of permutations and perfect matchings. The main tool of our investigations is MY-sequences. In particular, we discover that the Eulerian polynomials have a simple combinatorial interpretation in terms of some statistics on MY-sequences.

Some asymptotic results on q-binomial coefficients
Published in Annals of Comb. 20 (2016), no. 3, 623--634 • View PublicationBIB
We look at the asymptotic behavior of the coefficients of the $q$-binomial coefficients (or Gaussian polynomials) $\binom{a+k}{k}_q$, when $k$ is fixed. We give a number of results in this direction, some of which involve Eulerian polynomials and their generalizations.

The Real-rootedness of Eulerian Polynomials via the Hermite--Biehler Theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
Based on the Hermite--Biehler theorem, we simultaneously prove the real-rootedness of Eulerian polynomials of type $D$ and the real-rootedness of affine Eulerian polynomials of type $B$, which were first obtained by Savage and Visontai by using the theory of $\mathbf{s}$-Eulerian polynomials. We also confirm Hyatt's conjectures on the interlacing property of half Eulerian polynomials. Borcea and Brändén's work on the characterization of linear operators preserving Hurwitz stability is critical to this approach.

Worpitzky partitions for root systems and characteristic quasi-polynomials
Published in Tohoku Mathematical Journal, 70 (2018) 39-63 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a partition of (coweight) lattice points inside the dilated fundamental parallelepiped into those of partially closed simplices. This partition can be considered as a generalization and a lattice points interpretation of the classical formula of Worpitzky. This partition, and the generalized Eulerian polynomial, recently introduced by Lam and Postnikov, can be used to describe the characteristic (quasi)polynomials of Shi and Linial arrangements. As an application, we prove that the characteristic quasi-polynomial of the Shi arrangement turns out to be a polynomial. We also present several results on the location of zeros of characteristic polynomials, related to a conjecture of Postnikov and Stanley. In particular, we verify the "functional equation" of the characteristic polynomial of the Linial arrangement for any root system, and give partial affirmative results on "Riemann hypothesis" for the root systems of type $E_6, E_7, E_8$, and $F_4$.

Symmetric unimodal expansions of excedances in colored permutations
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, 52, part A, 174-196, 2016 • View PublicationBIB
We consider several generalizations of the classical $γ$-positivity of Eulerian polynomials (and their derangement analogues) using generating functions and combinatorial theory of continued fractions. For the symmetric group, we prove an expansion formula for inversions and excedances as well as a similar expansion for derangements. We also prove the $γ$-positivity for Eulerian polynomials for derangements of type $B$. More general expansion formulae are also given for Eulerian polynomials for $r$-colored derangements. Our results answer and generalize several recent open problems in the literature.

The $γ$-positivity of basic Eulerian polynomials via group actions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We provide combinatorial interpretation for the $γ$-coefficients of the basic Eulerian polynomials that enumerate permutations by the excedance statistic and the major index as well as the corresponding $γ$-coefficients for derangements. Our results refine the classical $γ$-positivity results for the Eulerian polynomials and the derangement polynomials. The main tools are Brändén's modified Foata--Strehl action on permutations and the recent triple statistic (des, rix, aid) equidistibuted with (exc, fix, maj).

On the Real-rootedness of the Descent Polynomials of $(n-2)$-Stack Sortable Permutations
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 22(4) (2015) #P4.12 • View PublicationBIB
Bóna conjectured that the descent polynomials on $(n-2)$-stack sortable permutations have only real zeros. Brändén proved this conjecture by establishing a more general result. In this paper, we give another proof of Brändén's result by using the theory of $s$-Eulerian polynomials recently developed by Savage and Visontai.

Context-free Grammars for Permutations and Increasing Trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we introduce the notion of a grammatical labeling to describe a recursive process of generating combinatorial objects based on a context-free grammar. For example, by labeling the ascents and descents of a Stirling permutation, we obtain a grammar for the second-order Eulerian polynomials. By using the grammar for $0$-$1$-$2$ increasing trees given by Dumont, we obtain a grammatical derivation of the generating function of the André polynomials obtained by Foata and Schützenberger, without solving a differential equation. We also find a grammar for the number $T(n,k)$ of permutations of $[n]=\{1,2,\ldots, n\}$ with $k$ exterior peaks, which was independently discovered by Ma. We demonstrate that Gessel's formula for the generating function of $T(n,k)$ can be deduced from this grammar. Moreover, by using grammars we show that the number of the permutations of $[n]$ with $k$ exterior peaks equals the number of increasing trees on $[n]$ with $2k+1$ vertices of even degree. A combinatorial proof of this fact is also presented.

Strong q-log-convexity of the Eulerian polynomials of Coxeter groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we prove the strong $q$-log-convexity of the Eulerian polynomials of Coxeter groups using their exponential generating functions. Our proof is based on the theory of exponential Riordan arraya and a criterion for determining the strong $q$-log-convexity of polynomials sequences, whose generating functions can be given by the continued fraction. As consequences, we get the strong $q$-log-convexity the Eulerian polynomials of type $A_n,B_n$, their $q$-analogous and the generalized Eulerian polynomials associated to the arithmetic progression $\{a,a+d,a+2d,a+3d,\ldots\}$ in a unified manner.
Multivariate Eulerian polynomials and exclusion processes
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 25 (2016) 486-499 • View PublicationBIB
We give a new combinatorial interpretation of the stationary distribution of the (partially) asymmetric exclusion process on a finite number of sites in terms of decorated alternative trees and colored permutations. The corresponding expressions of the multivariate partition functions are then related to multivariate generalizations of Eulerian polynomials for colored permutations considered recently by N. Williams and the third author, and others. We also discuss stability-- and negative dependence properties satisfied by the partition functions.

Chromatic quasisymmetric functions
We introduce a quasisymmetric refinement of Stanley's chromatic symmetric function. We derive refinements of both Gasharov's Schur-basis expansion of the chromatic symmetric function and Chow's expansion in Gessel's basis of fundamental quasisymmetric functions. We present a conjectural refinement of Stanley's power sum basis expansion, which we prove in special cases. We describe connections between the chromatic quasisymmetric function and both the $q$-Eulerian polynomials introduced in our earlier work and, conjecturally, representations of symmetric groups on cohomology of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties, which have been studied by Tymoczko and others. We discuss an approach, using the results and conjectures herein, to the $e$-positivity conjecture of Stanley and Stembridge for incomparability graphs of $(3+1)$-free posets.

Recurrences for Eulerian polynomials of type B and type D
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce new recurrences for the type B and type D Eulerian polynomials, and interpret them combinatorially. These recurrences are analogous to a well-known recurrence for the type A Eulerian polynomials. We also discuss their relationship to polynomials introduced by Savage and Visontai in connection to the real-rootedness of the corresponding Eulerian polynomials.

Mutual Interlacing and Eulerian-like Polynomials for Weyl Groups
We use the method of mutual interlacing to prove two conjectures on the real-rootedness of Eulerian-like polynomials: Brenti's conjecture on $q$-Eulerian polynomials for Weyl groups of type $D$, and Dilks, Petersen, and Stembridge's conjecture on affine Eulerian polynomials for irreducible finite Weyl groups. For the former, we obtain a refinement of Brenti's $q$-Eulerian polynomials of type $D$, and then show that these refined Eulerian polynomials satisfy certain recurrence relation. By using the Routh--Hurwitz theory and the recurrence relation, we prove that these polynomials form a mutually interlacing sequence for any positive $q$, and hence prove Brenti's conjecture. For $q=1$, our result reduces to the real-rootedness of the Eulerian polynomials of type $D$, which were originally conjectured by Brenti and recently proved by Savage and Visontai. For the latter, we introduce a family of polynomials based on Savage and Visontai's refinement of Eulerian polynomials of type $D$. We show that these new polynomials satisfy the same recurrence relation as Savage and Visontai's refined Eulerian polynomials. As a result, we get the real-rootedness of the affine Eulerian polynomials of type $D$. Combining the previous results for other types, we completely prove Dilks, Petersen, and Stembridge's conjecture, which states that, for every irreducible finite Weyl group, the affine descent polynomial has only real zeros.

The Double Eulerian Polynomial and Inversion Tables
We show that the pair (des, ides) of statistics on the set of permu- tations has the same distribution as the pair (asc, row) of statistics on the set of inversion tables, proving a conjecture of Visontai. The common generating function of these pairs is the double Eulerian polynomial.

On some colored Eulerian quasisymmetric functions
Recently, Hyatt introduced some colored Eulerian quasisymmetric function to study the joint distribution of excedance number and major index on colored permutation groups. We show how Hyatt's generating function formula for the fixed point colored Eulerian quasisymmetric functions can be deduced from the Decrease value theorem of Foata and Han. Using this generating function formula, we prove two symmetric function generalizations of the Chung-Graham-Knuth symmetrical Eulerian identity for some flag Eulerian quasisymmetric functions, which are specialized to the flag excedance numbers. Combinatorial proofs of those symmetrical identities are also constructed. We also study some other properties of the flag Eulerian quasisymmetric functions. In particular, we confirm a recent conjecture of Mongelli [Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, 120 (2013) 1216--1234] about the unimodality of the generating function of the flag excedances over the type B derangements. Moreover, colored versions of the hook factorization and admissible inversions of permutations are found, as well as a new recurrence formula for the $(\maj-\exc,\fexc)$-$q$-Eulerian polynomials. We introduce a colored analog of Rawlings major index on colored permutations and obtain an interpretation of the colored Eulerian quasisymmetric functions as sums of some fundamental quasisymmetric functions related with them, by applying Stanley's $P$-partition theory and a decomposition of the Chromatic quasisymmetric functions due to Shareshian and Wachs.
Counting subwords in flattened permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we consider the number of occurrences of descents, ascents, 123-subwords, 321-subwords, peaks and valleys in flattened permutations, which were recently introduced by Callan in his study of finite set partitions. For descents and ascents, we make use of the kernel method and obtain an explicit formula (in terms of Eulerian polynomials) for the distribution on $\mathcal{S}_n$ in the flattened sense. For the other four patterns in question, we develop a unified approach to obtain explicit formulas for the comparable distributions. We find that the formulas so obtained for 123- and 321-subwords can be expressed in terms of the Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind, while those for peaks and valleys are more related to the Eulerian polynomials. We also provide a bijection showing the equidistribution of descents in flattened permutations of a given length with big descents in permutations of the same length in the usual sense.

Multivariable Tangent and Secant q-derivative Polynomials
The derivative polynomials introduced by Knuth and Buckholtz in their calculations of the tangent and secant numbers are extended to a multivariable $q$--environment. The $n$-th $q$-derivatives of the classical $q$-tangent and $q$-secant are each given two polynomial expressions. The first polynomial expression is indexed by triples of integers, the second by compositions of integers. The functional relation between those two classes is fully given by means of combinatorial techniques. Moreover, those polynomials are proved to be generating functions for so-called $t$-permutations by multivariable statistics. By giving special values to those polynomials we recover classical $q$-polynomials such as the Carlitz $q$-Eulerian polynomials and the $(t,q)$-tangent and -secant analogs recently introduced. They also provide $q$-analogs for the Springer numbers. Finally, the $t$-compositions used in this paper furnish a combinatorial interpretation to one of the Fibonacci triangles.

A symmetric unimodal decomposition of the derangement polynomial of type $B$
The derangement polynomial $d_n (x)$ for the symmetric group enumerates derangements by the number of excedances. The derangement polynomial $d^B_n(x)$ for the hyperoctahedral group is a natural type $B$ analogue. A new combinatorial formula for this polynomial is given in this paper. This formula implies that $d^B_n (x)$ decomposes as a sum of two nonnegative, symmetric and unimodal polynomials whose centers of symmetry differ by a half and thus provides a new transparent proof of its unimodality. A geometric interpretation, analogous to Stanley's interpretation of $d_n (x)$ as the local $h$-polynomial of the barycentric subdivision of the simplex, is given to one of the summands of this decomposition. This interpretation leads to a unimodal decomposition and a new formula for the Eulerian polynomial of type $B$. The various decomposing polynomials introduced here are also studied in terms of recurrences, generating functions, combinatorial interpretations, expansions and real-rootedness.

Weighted random staircase tableaux
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 23 (2014) 1114-1147 • View PublicationBIB
This paper concerns a relatively new combinatorial structure called staircase tableaux. They were introduced in the context of the asymmetric exclusion process and Askey--Wilson polynomials, however, their purely combinatorial properties have gained considerable interest in the past few years. In this paper we further study combinatorial properties of staircase tableaux. We consider a general model of staircase tableaux in which symbols that appear in staircase tableaux may have arbitrary positive weights. Under this general model we derive a number of results. Some of our results concern the limiting laws for the number of appearances of symbols in a random staircase tableaux. They generalize and subsume earlier results that were obtained for specific values of the weights. One advantage of our generality is that we may let the weights approach extreme values of zero or infinity which covers further special cases appearing earlier in the literature. Furthermore, our generality allows us to analyze the structure of random staircase tableaux and we obtain several results in this direction. One of the tools we use are generating functions of the parameters of interests. This leads us to a two--parameter family of polynomials and we study this family as well. Specific values of the parameters include number of special cases analyzed earlier in the literature. All of them are generalizations of the classical Eulerian polynomials. We also briefly discuss the relation of staircase tableaux to the asymmetric exclusion process, to other recently introduced types of tableaux, and to an urn model studied by a number of researchers, including Philippe Flajolet.
