Degree Distributions in Recursive Trees with Fitnesses

We study a general model of recursive trees where vertices are equipped with independent weights and at each time-step a vertex is sampled with probability proportional to its fitness function (a function of its weight and degree) and connects to $\ell$ new-coming vertices. Under a certain technical assumption, applying the theory of Crump-Mode-Jagers branching processes, we derive formulas for the almost sure limiting distribution of the proportion of vertices with a given degree and weight, and proportion of edges with endpoint having a certain weight. As an application of this theorem, we prove rigorously observations of Bianconi related to the evolving Cayley tree in [$\mathit{Phys. \, Rev. \, E} \; \mathbf{66}, \text{ 036116 (2002)}$]. We also study the process in depth when the technical condition can fail in the particular case when the fitness function is affine, a model we call "generalised preferential attachment with fitness". We show that this model can exhibit condensation where a positive proportion of edges accumulate around vertices with maximal weight, or, more drastically, have a degenerate limiting degree distribution where the entire proportion of edges accumulate around these vertices. Finally, we prove stochastic convergence for the degree distribution under a different assumption of a strong law of large numbers for the partition function associated with the process.
The complexity of approximating the complex-valued Potts model

We study the complexity of approximating the partition function of the $q$-state Potts model and the closely related Tutte polynomial for complex values of the underlying parameters. Apart from the classical connections with quantum computing and phase transitions in statistical physics, recent work in approximate counting has shown that the behaviour in the complex plane, and more precisely the location of zeros, is strongly connected with the complexity of the approximation problem, even for positive real-valued parameters. Previous work in the complex plane by Goldberg and Guo focused on $q=2$, which corresponds to the case of the Ising model; for $q>2$, the behaviour in the complex plane is not as well understood and most work applies only to the real-valued Tutte plane.
Our main result is a complete classification of the complexity of the approximation problems for all non-real values of the parameters, by establishing \#P-hardness results that apply even when restricted to planar graphs. Our techniques apply to all $q\geq 2$ and further complement/refine previous results both for the Ising model and the Tutte plane, answering in particular a question raised by Bordewich, Freedman, Lovász and Welsh in the context of quantum computations.

We establish a polynomial-time approximation algorithm for partition functions of quantum spin models at high temperature. Our algorithm is based on the quantum cluster expansion of Netočný and Redig and the cluster expansion approach to designing algorithms due to Helmuth, Perkins, and Regts. Similar results have previously been obtained by related methods, and our main contribution is a simple and slightly sharper analysis for the case of pairwise interactions on bounded-degree graphs.

We study the connection between the three-color model and the polynomials $q_n(z)$ of Bazhanov and Mangazeev, which appear in the eigenvectors of the Hamiltonian of the XYZ spin chain. By specializing the parameters in the partition function of the 8VSOS model with DWBC and reflecting end, we find an explicit combinatorial expression for $q_n(z)$ in terms of the partition function of the three-color model with the same boundary conditions. Bazhanov and Mangazeev conjectured that $q_n(z)$ has positive integer coefficients. We prove the weaker statement that $q_n(z+1)$ and $(z+1)^{n(n+1)}q_n(1/(z+1))$ have positive integer coefficients. Furthermore, for the three-color model, we find some results on the number of states with a given number of faces of each color, and we compute strict bounds for the possible number of faces of each color.

We introduce a one-parameter deformation of the 2-Toda tau-function of (weighted) Hurwitz numbers, obtained by deforming Schur functions into Jack symmetric functions. We show that its coefficients are polynomials in the deformation parameter $b$ with nonnegative integer coefficients. These coefficients count generalized branched coverings of the sphere by an arbitrary surface, orientable or not, with an appropriate $b$-weighting that "measures" in some sense their non-orientability.
Notable special cases include non-orientable dessins d'enfants for which we prove the most general result so far towards the Matching-Jack conjecture and the "$b$-conjecture" of Goulden and Jackson from 1996, expansions of the $β$-ensemble matrix model, deformations of the HCIZ integral, and $b$-Hurwitz numbers that we introduce here and that are $b$-deformations of classical (single or double) Hurwitz numbers obtained for $b=0$.
A key role in our proof is played by a combinatorial model of non-orientable constellations equipped with a suitable $b$-weighting, whose partition function satisfies an infinite set of PDEs. These PDEs have two definitions, one given by Lax equations, the other one following an explicit combinatorial decomposition.

We compute, via motivic wall-crossing, the generating function of virtual motives of the Quot scheme of points on $\mathbb{A}^3$, generalising to higher rank a result of Behrend, Bryan and Szendrői. We show that this motivic partition function converges to a Gaussian distribution, extending a result of Morrison.

The complexity of graph homomorphisms has been a subject of intense study [11, 12, 4, 42, 21, 17, 6, 20]. The partition function $Z_{\mathbf A}(\cdot)$ of graph homomorphism is defined by a symmetric matrix $\mathbf A$ over $\mathbb C$. We prove that the complexity dichotomy of [6] extends to bounded degree graphs. More precisely, we prove that either $G \mapsto Z_{\mathbf A}(G)$ is computable in polynomial-time for every $G$, or for some $Δ> 0$ it is #P-hard over (simple) graphs $G$ with maximum degree $Δ(G) \le Δ$. The tractability criterion on $\mathbf A$ for this dichotomy is explicit, and can be decided in polynomial-time in the size of $\mathbf A$. We also show that the dichotomy is effective in that either a P-time algorithm for, or a reduction from #SAT to, $Z_{\mathbf A}(\cdot)$ can be constructed from $\mathbf A$, in the respective cases.

We apply the saddle-point method to derive asymptotic estimates or asymptotic series for the number of partitions of a natural integer into parts chosen from a subset of the positive integers whose associated Dirichlet series satisfies certain analytic properties. This enables grouping in a single statement many cases studied in the literature, as well as a number of new ones.

We construct the polynomial induction functor, which is the right adjoint to the restriction functor from the category of polynomial representations of a general linear group to the category of representations of its Weyl group. This construction leads to a representation-theoretic proof of Littlewood's plethystic formula for the multiplicity of an irreducible representation of the symmetric group in such a restriction. The unimodality of certain bipartite partition functions follows.

Andrews, Lewis and Lovejoy introduced the partition function $PD(n)$ as the number of partitions of $n$ with designated summands. In a recent work, Lin studied a partition function $PD_{t}(n)$ which counts the number of tagged parts over all the partitions of $n$ with designated summands. He proved that $PD_{t}(3n+2)$ is divisible by $3$. In this paper, we first introduce a structure named partitions with overline designated summands, which is counted by $PD_t(n)$. We then define a generalized rank of partitions with overline designated summands and give a combinatorial interpretation of the congruence for $PD_t(3n+2)$.

In a recent paper, Andrews and Newman extended the mex-function to integer partitions and proved many partition identities connected with these functions. In this paper, we present parity considerations of one of the families of functions they studied, namely $p_{t,t}(n)$. Among our results, we provide complete parity characterizations of $p_{1,1}(n)$ and $p_{3,3}(n)$.

We study the weighted partition function for lozenge tilings, with weights given by multivariate rational functions originally defined by Morales, Pak and Panova (2019) in the context of the factorial Schur functions. We prove that this partition function is symmetric for large families of regions. We employ both combinatorial and algebraic proofs.
Ising model on random triangulations of the disk: phase transition

In [arXiv:1806.06668], we have studied the Boltzmann random triangulation of the disk coupled to an Ising model on its faces with Dobrushin boundary condition at its critical temperature. In this paper, we investigate the phase transition of this model by extending our previous results to arbitrary temperature: We compute the partition function of the model at all temperatures, and derive several critical exponents associated with the infinite perimeter limit. We show that the model has a local limit at any temperature, whose properties depend drastically on the temperature. At high temperatures, the local limit is reminiscent of the uniform infinite half-planar triangulation (UIHPT) decorated with a subcritical percolation. At low temperatures, the local limit develops a bottleneck of finite width due to the energy cost of the main Ising interface between the two spin clusters imposed by the Dobrushin boundary condition. This change can be summarized by a novel order parameter with a nice geometric meaning. In addition to the phase transition, we also generalize our construction of the local limit from the two-step asymptotic regime used in [arXiv:1806.06668] to a more natural diagonal asymptotic regime. We obtain in this regime a scaling limit related to the length of the main Ising interface, which coincides with predictions from the continuum theory of quantum surfaces (a.k.a.\ Liouville quantum gravity).
Weight $q$-multiplicities for representations of the exceptional Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}_2$

Given a simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, Kostant's weight $q$-multiplicity formula is an alternating sum over the Weyl group whose terms involve the $q$-analog of Kostant's partition function. For $ξ$ (a weight of $\mathfrak{g}$), the $q$-analog of Kostant's partition function is a polynomial-valued function defined by $\wp_q(ξ)=\sum c_i q^i$ where $c_i$ is the number of ways $ξ$ can be written as a sum of $i$ positive roots of $\mathfrak{g}$. In this way, the evaluation of Kostant's weight $q$-multiplicity formula at $q = 1$ recovers the multiplicity of a weight in a highest weight representation of $\mathfrak{g}$. In this paper, we give closed formulas for computing weight $q$-multiplicities in a highest weight representation of the exceptional Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}_2$.

Since the study by Jacobi and Hecke, Hecke-type series have received extensive attention. Especially, Hecke-type series involving infinite products have attracted broad interest among many mathematicians including Kac, Peterson, Andrews, Bressoud and Liu. Motivated by the works of these people, we study Hecke-type series involving infinite products. In particular, we establish some Hecke-type series involving infinite products and then obtain the truncated versions of these series as well as some other known series of the same type. As consequences, three families of inequalities for certain partition functions are also presented. Our proofs heavily rely on a formula from the work of Zhi-Guo Liu.
Merged-log-concavity of rational functions, almost strictly unimodal sequences, and phase transitions of ideal boson-fermion gases
We obtain some new results on the unimodal sequences of the real values of rational functions by polynomials with positive integer coefficients. Thus, we introduce the notion of merged-log-concavity of rational functions. Roughly speaking, the notion extends Stanley's $q$-log-concavity of polynomials.
We construct explicit merged-log-concave rational functions by $q$-binomial coefficients, Hadamard products, and convolutions, extending the Cauchy-Binet formula. Then, we obtain the unimodal sequences of rational functions by Young diagrams. Moreover, we consider the variation of unimodal sequences by critical points that separate strictly increasing, strictly decreasing, and hill-shape sequences among almost strictly unimodal sequences. Also, the critical points are zeros of polynomials in a suitable setting.
The study above extends the $t$-power series of $(\pm t;q)_{\infty}^{\mp 1}$ to some extent by polynomials with positive integer coefficients and the variation of unimodal sequences. We then obtain the golden ratio of quantum dilogarithms ($q$-exponentials) as a critical point. Additionally, we consider eta products, generalized Narayana numbers, and weighted $q$-multinomial coefficients, which we introduce.
In statistical mechanics, we discuss the grand canonical partition functions of some ideal boson-fermion gases with or without Casimir energies (Ramanujan summation). The merged-log-concavity gives phase transitions on Helmholtz free energies by critical points of the metallic ratios including the golden ratio. In particular, the phase transitions implies non-zero particle vacua from zero particle vacua as the temperature rises.
Maps of unfixed genus and blossoming trees

We introduce bijections between families of rooted maps with unfixed genus and families of so-called blossoming trees endowed with an arbitrary forward matching of their leaves. We first focus on Eulerian maps with controlled vertex degrees. The mapping from blossoming trees to maps is a generalization to unfixed genus of Schaeffer's closing construction for planar Eulerian maps. The inverse mapping relies on the existence of canonical orientations which allow to equip the maps with canonical spanning trees, as proved by Bernardi. Our bijection gives in particular (here in the Eulerian case) a combinatorial explanation to the striking similarity between the (infinite) recursive system of equations which determines the partition function of maps with unfixed genus (as obtained via matrix models and orthogonal polynomials) and that determining the partition function of planar maps. All the functions in the recursive system get a combinatorial interpretation as generating functions for maps endowed with particular multiple markings of their edges. This allows us in particular to give a combinatorial proof of some differential identities satisfied by these functions. We also consider face-colored Eulerian maps with unfixed genus and derive some striking identities between their generating functions and those of properly weighted marked maps. The same methodology is then applied to deal with $m$-regular bipartite maps with unfixed genus, leading to similar results. The case of cubic maps is also briefly discussed.
Efficient algorithms for the Potts model on small-set expanders
An emerging trend in approximate counting is to show that certain `low-temperature' problems are easy on typical instances, despite worst-case hardness results. For the class of regular graphs one usually shows that expansion can be exploited algorithmically, and since random regular graphs are good expanders with high probability the problem is typically tractable. Inspired by approaches used in subexponential-time algorithms for Unique Games, we develop an approximation algorithm for the partition function of the ferromagnetic Potts model on graphs with a small-set expansion condition. In such graphs it may not suffice to explore the state space of the model close to ground states, and a novel feature of our method is to efficiently find a larger set of `pseudo-ground states' such that it is enough to explore the model around each pseudo-ground state.
Hidden invariance of last passage percolation and directed polymers

Last passage percolation and directed polymer models on $\mathbb Z^2$ are invariant under translation and certain reflections. When these models have an integrable structure coming from either the RSK correspondence or the geometric RSK correspondence (e.g. geometric last passage percolation or the log-gamma polymer), we show that these basic invariances can be combined with a decoupling property to yield a rich new set of symmetries. Among other results, we prove shift and rearrangement invariance statements for last passage times, geodesic locations, disjointness probabilities, polymer partition functions, and quenched polymer measures. We also use our framework to find `scrambled' versions of the classical RSK correspondence, and to find an RSK correspondence for moon polyominoes. The results extend to limiting models, including the KPZ equation and the Airy sheet.

We show that throughout the satisfiable phase the normalised number of satisfying assignments of a random $2$-SAT formula converges in probability to an expression predicted by the cavity method from statistical physics. The proof is based on showing that the Belief Propagation algorithm renders the correct marginal probability that a variable is set to `true' under a uniformly random satisfying assignment.
