On the scaling of random Tamari intervals and Schnyder woods of random triangulations (with an asymptotic D-finite trick)
We consider a Tamari interval of size $n$ (i.e., a pair of Dyck paths which are comparable for the Tamari relation) chosen uniformly at random. We show that the height of a uniformly chosen vertex on the upper or lower path scales as $n^{3/4}$, and has an explicit limit law. By the Bernardi-Bonichon bijection, this result also describes the height of points in the canonical Schnyder trees of a uniform random plane triangulation of size $n$. The exact solution of the model is based on polynomial equations with one and two catalytic variables. To prove the convergence from the exact solution, we use a version of moment pumping based on D-finiteness, which is essentially automatic and should apply to many other models. We are not sure to have seen this simple trick used before. It would be interesting to study the universality of this convergence for decomposition trees associated to positive Bousquet-Mélou--Jehanne equations.

Asymptotic computations of tropical refined invariants in genus 0 and 1
Block and Göttsche introduced a Laurent polynomial multiplicity to count tropical curves. Itenberg and Mikhalkin then showed that this multiplicity leads to invariant counts called tropical refined invariants. Recently, Brugallé and Jaramillo-Puentes studied the polynomiality properties of the coefficients of these invariants and showed that for fixed genus g, the coefficients ultimately coincide with polynomials in the homology class of the curves we look at. We call the generating series of these polynomials asymptotic refined invariant. In genus 0, the asymptotic refined invariant has been computed by the second author in the h-transverse case. In this paper, we give a new proof of the formula for the asymptotic refined invariant for g = 0 using variations on the floor diagram algorithm. This technique allows also to compute the asymptotic refined invariant for g = 1. The result exhibits surprising regularity properties related to the generating series of partition numbers and quasi-modular forms.

Multiplicative generalised polynomial sequences
We fully classify completely multiplicative sequences which are given by generalised polynomial formulae, and obtain a similar result for (not necessarily completely) multiplicative sequences under the additional restriction that the sequence is not zero almost everywhere.

Tutte polynomials of matroids as universal valuative invariants
We provide a full classification of all families of matroids that are closed under duality and minors, and for which the Tutte polynomial is a universal valuative invariant. There are four inclusion-wise maximal families, two of which are the class of elementary split matroids and the class of graphic Schubert matroids. As a consequence of our framework, we derive new relations among Tutte polynomials of matroids. For example, we show that the Tutte polynomial of every matroid can be expressed uniquely as an integral combination of Tutte polynomials of graphic Schubert matroids.

Quadratic embedding constants of fan graphs and graph joins
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications 709 (2025), 58-91 • View PublicationBIB
We derive a general formula for the quadratic embedding constant of a graph join $\bar{K}_m+G$, where $\bar{K}_m$ is the empty graph on $m\ge1$ vertices and $G$ is an arbitrary graph. Applying our formula to a fan graph $K_1+P_n$, where $K_1=\bar{K}_1$ is the singleton graph and $P_n$ is the path on $n\ge1$ vertices, we show that $\mathrm{QEC}(K_1+P_n)=-\tildeα_n-2$, where $\tildeα_n$ is the minimal zero of a new polynomial $Φ_n(x)$ related to Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind. Moreover, for an even $n$ we have $\tildeα_n=\min\mathrm{ev}(A_n)$, where the right-hand side is the An minimal eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix $A_n$ of $P_n$. For an odd $n$ we show that $\min\mathrm{ev}(A_{n+1})\le\tildeα_n<\min\mathrm{ev}(A_n)$.
Quantum bumpless pipe dreams
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 13 (2025) e28 • View PublicationBIB
Schubert polynomials are polynomial representatives of Schubert classes in the cohomology of the complete flag variety and have a combinatorial formulation in terms of bumpless pipe dreams. Quantum double Schubert polynomials are polynomial representatives of Schubert classes in the torus-equivariant quantum cohomology of the complete flag variety, but no analogous combinatorial formulation had been discovered. We introduce a generalization of the bumpless pipe dreams called quantum bumpless pipe dreams, giving a novel combinatorial formula for quantum double Schubert polynomials as a sum of binomial weights of quantum bumpless pipe dreams. We give a bijective proof for this formula by showing that the sum of binomial weights satisfies a defining transition equation.

$qt$RSK${}^*$: A probabilistic dual RSK correspondence for Macdonald polynomials
We introduce a probabilistic generalization of the dual Robinson--Schensted--Knuth correspondence, called $qt$RSK${}^*$, depending on two parameters $q$ and $t$. This correspondence extends the $q$RS$t$ correspondence, recently introduced by the authors, and allows the first tableaux-theoretic proof of the dual Cauchy identity for Macdonald polynomials. By specializing $q$ and $t$, one recovers the row and column insertion version of the classical dual RSK correspondence as well as of $q$- and $t$-deformations thereof which are connected to $q$-Whittaker and Hall--Littlewood polynomials. When restricting to Jack polynomials and $\{0,1\}$-matrices corresponding to words, we prove that the insertion tableaux obtained by $qt$RSK${}^*$ are invariant under swapping letters in the input word. Our approach is based on Fomin's growth diagrams and the notion of probabilistic bijections.

Three Examples of Quasisymmetric Compatible $\mathfrak{S}_n$-modules
The Schur functions, a basis for the symmetric polynomials (Sym), encode the irreducible representations of the symmetric group, $\mathfrak{S}_n$, via the Frobenius characteristic map. In 1996, Krob and Thibon defined a quasisymmetric Frobenius map on the representations of $\mathcal{H}_n(0)$, mapping them to the quasisymmetric functions (QSym). Despite the obvious inclusion of Sym in QSym and the close relationship between $\mathfrak{S}_n$ and $\mathcal{H}_n(0)$, there is no known direct link between these two Frobenius characteristic maps and the related representations. We explore three specific situations in which a deformation of an $\mathfrak{S}_n$ action results in a valid $\mathcal{H}_n(0)$ action and gives a quasisymmetric Frobenius characteristic that is equal to the symmetric Frobenius characteristic. We introduce the concept of quasisymmetric compatibility, which formalizes a link between the two maps, and we show it applies to all $\mathfrak{S}_n$-modules.

A descent basis for the Garsia-Procesi module
Published • View PublicationBIB
We assign to each Young diagram $λ$ a subset $\mathcal{B}_{λ'}$ of the collection of Garsia-Stanton descent monomials, and prove that it determines a basis of the Garsia-Procesi module $R_λ$, whose graded character is the Hall-Littlewood polynomial $\tilde{H}_λ[X;t]$. This basis is a major index analogue of the basis $\mathcal{B}_λ\subset R_λ$ defined by certain recursions in due to Garsia and Procesi, in the same way that the descent basis is related to the Artin basis of the coinvariant algebra $R_n$, which in fact corresponds to the case when $λ=1^n$. By anti-symmetrizing a subset of this basis with respect to the corresponding Young subgroup under the Springer action, we obtain a basis in the parabolic case, as well as a corresponding formula for the expansion of $\tilde{H}_λ[X;t]$. Despite a similar appearance, it does not appear obvious how to connect these formulas appear to the specialization of the modified Macdonald formula of Haglund, Haiman and Loehr at $q=0$.

Motivated exposition of combinatorial Nullstellensatz
Published in Mat. Prosveschenie, 34 (2025) 89--102 • Search Publication
In this expository note we show how combinatorial Nullstellensatz by N. Alon naturally appears in solutions of elementary problems. Simple ideas gradually and naturally appear in such solutions, thus bringing a reader to generalizations. The note is accessible to mathematicians not specialized in the area, and to students familiar with polynomials.

Canon permutations and generalized descents of standard Young tableaux
Canon permutations are permutations of the multiset having $k$ copies of each integer between $1$ and $n$, with the property that the subsequences obtained by taking the $j$th copy of each entry, for each fixed $j$, are all the same. For $k=2$, canon permutations are sometimes called nonnesting permutations, and it is known that the polynomial that enumerates them by the number of descents factors as a product of an Eulerian polynomial and a Narayana polynomial. We extend this result to arbitrary $k$, and we relate the problem to the enumeration of standard Young tableaux of rectangular shape with respect to generalized descent statistics. Our proof is bijective, and it also settles a conjecture of Sulanke about the distribution of certain lattice path statistics.

Stable multivariate Narayana polynomials and labeled plane trees
In this paper, we introduce stable multivariate generalizations of Narayana polynomials of type A and type B. We give an insertion algorithm for labeled plane trees and introduce the notion of improper edges. Our polynomials are multivariate generating polynomials of labeled plane trees and can be generated by a grammatical labeling based on a context-free grammar. Our proof of real stability uses a characterization of stable-preserving linear operators due to Borcea and Brändén. In particular, we get an alternative multivariate stable refinement of the second-order Eulerian polynomials, which is different from the one given by Haglund and Visontai.

Highly connected graphs have highly connected spanning bipartite subgraphs
Published in Elect. J. Combin. 31 (2024), P1.67 • View PublicationBIB
For integers $k,n$ with $1 \le k \le n/2$, let $f(k,n)$ be the smallest integer $t$ such that every $t$-connected $n$-vertex graph has a spanning bipartite $k$-connected subgraph. A conjecture of Thomassen asserts that $f(k,n)$ is upper bounded by some function of $k$. The best upper bound for $f(k,n)$ is by Delcourt and Ferber who proved that $f(k,n) \le 10^{10}k^3 \log n$. Here it is proved that $f(k,n) \le 22k^2 \log n$. For larger $k$, stronger bounds hold. In the linear regime, it is proved that for any $0 < c < \frac{1}{2}$ and all sufficiently large $n$, if $k=\lfloor cn \rfloor$, then $f(k, n) \le 30\sqrt{c} n \le 30\sqrt{n(k+1)}$. In the polynomial regime, it is proved that for any $\frac{1}{3} \le α< 1$ and all sufficiently large $n$, if $k = \lfloor n^α\rfloor$, then $f(k ,n) \le 9n^{(1+α)/2} \le 9\sqrt{n(k+1)}$.

Characterizing the fourth-moment phenomenon of monochromatic subgraph counts via influences
We investigate the distribution of monochromatic subgraph counts in random vertex $2$-colorings of large graphs. We give sufficient conditions for the asymptotic normality of these counts and demonstrate their essential necessity (particularly for monochromatic triangles). Our approach refines the fourth-moment theorem to establish new, local influence-based conditions for asymptotic normality; these findings more generally provide insight into fourth-moment phenomena for a broader class of Rademacher and Gaussian polynomials.

Induced Subforests and Superforests
Graph isomorphism, subgraph isomorphism, and maximum common subgraphs are classical well-investigated objects. Their (parameterized) complexity and efficiently tractable cases have been studied. In the present paper, for a given set of forests, we study maximum common induced subforests and minimum common induced superforests. We show that finding a maximum subforest is NP-hard already for two subdivided stars while finding a minimum superforest is tractable for two trees but NP-hard for three trees. For a given set of $k$ trees, we present an efficient greedy $\left(\frac{k}{2}-\frac{1}{2}+\frac{1}{k}\right)$-approximation algorithm for the minimum superforest problem. Finally, we present a polynomial time approximation scheme for the maximum subforest problem for any given set of forests.

A counterexample to the Ross--Yong conjecture for Grothendieck polynomials
We give a minimal counterexample for a conjecture of Ross and Yong (2015) which proposes a K-Kohnert rule for Grothendieck polynomials. We conjecture a revised version of this rule. We then prove both rules hold in the $321$-avoiding case.

Paving Matroids: Defining Equations and Associated Varieties
We study paving matroids, their realization spaces, and their closures, along with matroid varieties and circuit varieties. Within this context, we introduce three distinct methods for generating polynomials within the associated ideals of these varieties across any dimension. Additionally, we explain the relationship between polynomials constructed using these different methods. We then compute a comprehensive and finite set of defining equations for matroid varieties associated with specific classes of paving matroids. Finally, we focus on the class of paving matroids of rank $3$, known as point-line configurations, which essentially contain simple matroids of rank $3$. Furthermore, we provide a decomposition for the associated circuit variety of point-line configurations, where all points have a degree less than $3$. Lastly, we present several examples applying our results and compare them with the known cases in the literature.
Relations between Chebyshev, Fibonacci and Lucas polynomials via trigonometric sums
In this paper we derive some new identities involving the Fibonacci and Lucas polynomials and the Chebyshev polynomials of the first and the second kind. Our starting point is a finite trigonometric sum which equals the resolvent kernel on the discrete circle with $m$ vertices and which can be evaluated in two different ways. An expression for this sum in terms of the Chebyshev polynomials was deduced in \cite{JKS} and the expression in terms of the Fibonacci and Lucas polynomials is deduced in this paper. As a consequence, we establish some further identities involving trigonometric sums and Fibonacci, Lucas, Pell and Pell-Lucas polynomials and numbers, thus providing a "physical" interpretation for those identities. Moreover, the finite trigonometric sum of the type considered in this paper can be related to the effective resistance between any two vertices of the $N$-cycle graph with four nearest neighbors $C_{N}(1,2)$. This yields further identities involving Fibonacci numbers.

Spanning Euler Tours in Hypergraphs
Motivated by generalizations of de Bruijn cycles to various combinatorial structures (Chung, Diaconis, and Graham), we study various Euler tours in set systems. Let $\mathcal{G}$ be a hypergraph whose corank and rank are $c\geq 3$ and $k$, respetively. The minimum $t$-degree of $\mathcal{G}$ is the fewest number of edges containing every $t$-subset of vertices. An Euler tour (family, respectively) in $\mathcal{G}$ is a (family of, respectively) closed walk(s) that (jointly, respectively) traverses each edge of $\mathcal{G}$ exactly once. An Euler tour is spanning if it traverses all the vertices of $\mathcal{G}$. We show that $\mathcal{G}$ has an Euler family if its incidence graph is $(1+\lceil k/c \rceil)$-edge-connected. Provided that the number of vertices of $\mathcal{G}$ meets a reasonable lower bound, and either $2$-degree is at least $k$ or $t$-degree is at least one for $t\geq 3$, we show that $\mathcal{G}$ has a spanning Euler tour. To exhibit the usefulness of our results, we solve a number of open problems concerning ordering blocks of a design (these have applications in other fields such as erasure-correcting codes). Answering a question of Horan and Hurlbert, we show that a Steiner quadruple system of order $n$ has a (spanning) Euler tour if and only if $n\geq 8$ and $n\equiv 2,4 \pmod 6$, and we prove a similar result for all Steiner systems, as well as all designs except for 2-designs whose index $λ$ is less than the largest block size. We nearly solve a conjecture of Dewar and Stevens on the existence of universal cycles in pairwise balanced designs. Motivated by R.L. Graham's question on the existence of Hamiltonian cycles in block-intersection graphs of Steiner triple systems, we establish the Hamiltonicity of the block-intersection graph of a large family of (not necessarily uniform) designs. All our results are constructive and of polynomial time complexity.
