We describe a general algorithm for generating various families of ribbon tableaux and computing their spin polynomials. This algorithm is derived from a new matricial coding. An advantage of this new notation lies in the fact that it permits one to generate ribbon tableaux with skew shapes. This algorithm permits us to compute quickly big LLT polynomials in MuPAD-Combinat.

Let $f(x)$ and $g(x)$ be two real polynomials whose leading coefficients have the same sign. Suppose that $f(x)$ and $g(x)$ have only real zeros and that $g$ interlaces $f$ or $g$ alternates left of $f$. We show that if $ad\ge bc$ then the polynomial $$(bx+a)f(x)+(dx+c)g(x)$$ has only real zeros. Applications are related to certain results of F.Brenti (Mem. Amer. Math. Soc. 413 (1989)) and transformations of Pólya frequency sequences. More specifically, suppose that $A(n,k)$ are nonnegative numbers which satisfy the recurrence $$A(n,k)=(rn+sk+t)A(n-1,k-1)+(an+bk+c)A(n-1,k)$$ for $n\ge 1$ and $0\le k\le n$, where $A(n,k)=0$ unless $0\le k\le n$. We show that if $rb\ge as$ and $(r+s+t)b\ge (a+c)s$, then for each $n\ge 0$, $A(n,0),A(n,1),...,A(n,n)$ is a Pólya frequency sequence. This gives a unified proof of the PF property of many well-known sequences including the binomial coefficients, the Stirling numbers of two kinds and the Eulerian numbers.

Let $f$ and $F$ be two polynomials satisfying $F(x)=u(x)f(x)+v(x)f'(x)$. We characterize the relation between the location and multiplicity of the real zeros of $f$ and $F$, which generalizes and unifies many known results, including the results of Brenti and Brändén about the $q$-Eulerian polynomials.

Let q be a power of a prime and n a positive integer. Let P(q) be a parabolic subgroup of the finite general linear group GL(n,q). We show that the number of P(q)-conjugacy classes in GL(n,q) is, as a function of q, a polynomial in q with integer coefficients. This answers a question of J. Alperin.

In this paper, we give a polynomial (O(n^8)) algorithm for finding a longest common pattern between two permutations of size n given that one is separable. We also give an algorithm for general permutations whose complexity depends on the length of the longest simple permutation involved in one of our permutations.
Macdonald Polynomials and Multivariable Basic Hypergeometric Series

We study Macdonald polynomials from a basic hypergeometric series point of view. In particular, we show that the Pieri formula for Macdonald polynomials and its recently discovered inverse, a recursion formula for Macdonald polynomials, both represent multivariable extensions of the terminating very-well-poised 6-phi-5 summation formula. We derive several new related identities including multivariate extensions of Jackson's very-well-poised 8-phi-7 summation. Motivated by our basic hypergeometric analysis, we propose an extension of Macdonald polynomials to Macdonald symmetric functions indexed by partitions with complex parts. These appear to possess nice properties.

We study double Hurwitz numbers in genus zero counting the number of covers $\CP^1\to\CP^1$ with two branching points with a given branching behavior. By the recent result due to Goulden, Jackson and Vakil, these numbers are piecewise polynomials in the multiplicities of the preimages of the branching points. We describe the partition of the parameter space into polynomiality domains, called chambers, and provide an expression for the difference of two such polynomials for two neighboring chambers. Besides, we provide an explicit formula for the polynomial in a certain chamber called totally negative, which enables us to calculate double Hurwitz numbers in any given chamber as the polynomial for the totally negative chamber plus the sum of the differences between the neighboring polynomials along a path connecting the totally negative chamber with the given one.

We propose new conjectures relating sum rules for the polynomial solution of the qKZ equation with open (reflecting) boundaries as a function of the quantum parameter $q$ and the $τ$-enumeration of Plane Partitions with specific symmetries, with $τ=-(q+q^{-1})$. We also find a conjectural relation à la Razumov-Stroganov between the $τ\to 0$ limit of the qKZ solution and refined numbers of Totally Symmetric Self Complementary Plane Partitions.

In the present paper, we characterize all possible Hilbert functions of graded ideals in a polynomial ring whose regularity is smaller than or equal to $d$, where $d$ is a positive integer. In addition, we prove the following result which is a generalization of Bigatti, Hulett and Pardue's result: Let $p \geq 0$ and $d>0$ be integers. If the base field is a field of characteristic 0 and there is a graded ideal $I$ whose projective dimension $\mathrm{proj\ dim}(I)$ is smaller than or equal to $p$ and whose regularity $\mathrm{reg}(I)$ is smaller than or equal to $d$, then there exists a monomial ideal $L$ having the maximal graded Betti numbers among graded ideals $J$ which have the same Hilbert function as $I$ and which satisfy $\mathrm{proj dim}(J) \leq p$ and $\mathrm{reg}(J) \leq d$. We also prove the same fact for squarefree monomial ideals. The main methods for proofs are generic initial ideals and combinatorics on strongly stable ideals.
Alternating sum formulae for the determinant and other link invariants

A classical result states that the determinant of an alternating link is equal to the number of spanning trees in a checkerboard graph of an alternating connected projection of the link.
We generalize this result to show that the determinant is the alternating sum of the number of quasi-trees of genus j of the dessin of a non-alternating link.
Furthermore, we obtain formulas for other link invariants by counting quantities on dessins. In particular we will show that the $j$-th coefficient of the Jones polynomial is given by sub-dessins of genus less or equal to $j$.

Let G be an additive abelian group whose finite subgroups are all cyclic. Let A_1,...,A_n (n>1) be finite subsets of G with cardinality k>0, and let b_1,...,b_n be pairwise distinct elements of G with odd order. We show that for every positive integer m\leq (k-1)/(n-1) there are more than (k-1)n-(m+1)n(n-1)/2 sets {a_1,...,a_n} such that a_1\in A_1,..., a_n\in A_n, and both a_i\not=a_j and ma_i+b_i\not=ma_j+b_j (or both ma_i\not=ma_j and a_i+b_i\not=a_j+b_j) for all 1\leq i<j\leq n.
This extends a recent result of Dasgupta, Károlyi, Serra and
Szegedy on Snevily's conjecture. Actually stronger results on sumsets with polynomial restrictions are obtained in this paper.

We apply the semidefinite programming approach developed in arxiv:math.MG/0608426 to obtain new upper bounds for codes in spherical caps. We compute new upper bounds for the one-sided kissing number in several dimensions where we in particular get a new tight bound in dimension 8. Furthermore we show how to use the SDP framework to get analytic bounds.

Non-backtracking random walks mix faster

We compute the mixing rate of a non-backtracking random walk on a regular expander. Using some properties of Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind, we show that this rate may be up to twice as fast as the mixing rate of the simple random walk. The closer the expander is to a Ramanujan graph, the higher the ratio between the above two mixing rates is.
As an application, we show that if $G$ is a high-girth regular expander on $n$ vertices, then a typical non-backtracking random walk of length $n$ on $G$ does not visit a vertex more than $(1+o(1))\frac{\log n}{\log\log n}$ times, and this result is tight. In this sense, the multi-set of visited vertices is analogous to the result of throwing $n$ balls to $n$ bins uniformly, in contrast to the simple random walk on $G$, which almost surely visits some vertex $Ω(\log n)$ times.

Stanley introduces polynomials which help evaluate symmetric group characters and conjectures that the coefficients of the polynomials are positive. Stanley later gives a conjectured combinatorial interpretation for the coefficients of the polynomials. Here, we prove the conjecture for the terms of highest degree.

Given a nonnegative integer $m$ and a finite collection ${\mathcal A}$ of linear forms on ${\mathbb Q}^d$, the arrangement of affine hyperplanes in ${\mathbb Q}^d$ defined by the equations $α(x) = k$ for $α\in {\mathcal A}$ and integers $k \in [-m, m]$ is denoted by ${\mathcal A}^m$. It is proved that the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of ${\mathcal A}^m$ are quasi-polynomials in $m$ and that they satisfy a simple combinatorial reciprocity law.

The number of permutations with a given number of sequences
P(n,s) denotes the number of permutations of 1,2,...n that have exactly s sequences. Canfield and Wilf [math.CO/0609704] recently showed that P(n,s) can be written as a sum of s polynomials in n. We determine these polynomials explicitly and also obtain explicit expressions for P(n,s) and its fixed-s generating function u_s(x).
