Factorization norms and Zarankiewicz problems
The $γ_2$-norm of Boolean matrices plays an important role in communication complexity and discrepancy theory. In this paper, we study combinatorial properties of this norm, and provide new applications, involving Zarankiewicz type problems. We show that if $M$ is an $m\times n$ Boolean matrix such that $γ_2(M)<γ$ and $M$ contains no $t\times t$ all-ones submatrix, then $M$ contains $O_{γ,t}(m+n)$ one entries. In other words, graphs of bounded $γ_2$-norm are degree bounded. This addresses a conjecture of Hambardzumyan, Hatami, and Hatami for locally sparse matrices. We prove that if $G$ is a $K_{t,t}$-free incidence graph of $n$ points and $n$ homothets of a polytope $P$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$, then the average degree of $G$ is $O_{d,P}(t(\log n)^{O(d)})$. This is sharp up the $O(.)$ notations. In particular, we prove a more general result on semilinear graphs, which greatly strengthens the work of Basit, Chernikov, Starchenko, Tao, and Tran.

Amplitubes: Graph Cosmohedra
The tree-level scattering amplitudes for $\text{tr}(φ^3)$ theory can be interpreted as a sum over the vertices of a polytope known as the associahedron. For each graph $G$, there exists a natural generalisation of the associahedron, which is constructed by considering tubes and tubings of the underling graph. This family of polytopes are called graph associahedra. The classical associahedra then arise as the graph associahedron for the path graphs. It is therefore natural to associate to each graph associahedron an amplitude-like object, we refer to as the amplitube, defined via a sum over its vertices. Recently, also in the context of trace $\text{tr}(φ^3)$ theory, progress has been made towards defining a new geometric object, coined the cosmohedron, which computes not the amplitude, but the cosmological wavefunction as a sum over its vertices. This polytope can be constructed by consistently blowing up all boundaries of the associahedron to co-dimension one. Building on these results, in the present paper, we generalise the notion of the wavefunction for arbitrary graphs. These new expressions, which we call cosmological amplitubes, are defined via a sum over the vertices of a corresponding polytope, the graph cosmohedron. The graph cosmohedra are constructed by considering regions and regional tubings of the underlying graph which we introduce. Like the cosmohedron, the graph cosmohedra can be obtained by consistently blowing up all boundaries of the corresponding graph associahedron to co-dimension one. This new family of polytopes constitutes a vast generalisation of the cosmohedron, and we provide explicit embeddings for them, which builds upon an ABHY-like embedding for the graph associahedra.

Rubik's Abstract Polytopes
We generalize the Rubik's cube, together with its group of configurations, to any abstract regular polytope. After discussing general aspects, we study the Rubik's simplex of arbitrary dimension and provide a complete description of the associated group. We sketch an analogous argument for the Rubik's hypercube as well.

Enumeration and constructions of vertices of the polytope of polystochastic matrices
A multidimensional nonnegative matrix is called polystochastic if the sum of entries in each of its lines equals $1$. The set of all polystochastic matrices of order $n$ and dimension $d$ is a convex polytope $Ω_n^d$ known as the Birkhoff polytope. In this paper, we identify all vertices of the polytopes $Ω_4^3$ and $Ω_3^4$ correcting the results of Ke, Li, and Xiao (2016). Additionally, we describe constructions vertices of $Ω_n^d$ using multidimensional matrix products and find symmetric vertices of $Ω_3^d$ for all $d \geq 4$ with large support sizes.
Realizing resolutions of powers of extremal ideals
Extremal ideals are a class of square-free monomial ideals which dominate and determine many algebraic invariants of powers of all square-free monomial ideals. For example, the $r^{th}$ power ${\mathcal{E}_q}^r$ of the extremal ideal on $q$ generators has the maximum Betti numbers among the $r^{th}$ power of any square-free monomial ideal with $q$ generators. In this paper we study the combinatorial and geometric structure of the (minimal) free resolutions of powers of square-free monomial ideals via the resolutions of powers of extremal ideals. Although the end results are algebraic, this problem has a natural interpretation in terms of polytopes and discrete geometry. Our guiding conjecture is that all powers ${\mathcal{E}_q}^r$ of extremal ideals have resolutions supported on their Scarf simplicial complexes, and thus their resolutions are as small as possible. This conjecture is known to hold for $r \leq 2$ or $q \leq 4$. In this paper we prove the conjecture holds for $r=3$ and any $q\geq 1$ by giving a complete description of the Scarf complex of ${\mathcal{E}_q}^3$. This effectively gives us a sharp bound on the betti numbers and projective dimension of the third power of any square-free momomial ideal. For large $i$ and $q$, our bounds on the $i^{th}$ betti numbers are an exponential improvement over previously known bounds. We also describe a large number of faces of the Scarf complex of ${\mathcal{E}_q}^r$ for any $r,q \geq 1$.

Hybrid spherical designs
Spherical $t$-designs are finite point sets on the unit sphere that enable exact integration of polynomials of degree at most $t$ via equal-weight quadrature. This concept has recently been extended to spherical $t$-design curves by the use of normalized path integrals. However, explicit examples of such curves are rare. We construct new spherical $t$-design curves for small $t$ based on the edges of a distinct subclass of convex polytopes. We then introduce hybrid $t$-designs that combine points and curves for exact polynomial integration of higher degree. Our constructions are based on the vertices and edges of dual pairs of convex polytopes and polynomial invariants of their symmetry group. A notable result is a hybrid $t$-design for $t=19$.
Tropical Fréchet Means
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Fréchet mean is a key measure of central tendency as a barycenter for a given set of points in a general metric space. It is computed by solving an optimization problem and is a fundamental quantity in statistics. In this paper, we study Fréchet means in tropical geometry -- a piecewise linear, combinatorial, and polyhedral variant of algebraic geometry that has gained prominence in applications. A key property of Fréchet means is that uniqueness is generally not guaranteed, which is true in tropical settings. In solving the tropical Fréchet mean optimization problem, we obtain a geometric characterization of the collection of all Fréchet means in a general tropical space as a tropically and classically convex polytope. Furthermore, we prove that a certificate of positivity for finitely many quadratic polynomials in $\mathbb{R}[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ always exists, given that their quadratic homogeneous components are sums of squares. We propose an algorithm to symbolically compute the Fréchet mean polytope based on our exact quadratic optimization result and study its complexity.

The Polytope of Probability Functions on a Finite Poset
Kim, Kim, and Neggers (2019) defined probability functions on a poset, by listing some very natural conditions that a function \(π: P \times P \to [0,1]\) should satisfy in order to capture the intuition of "the likelihood that \(a\) precedes \(b\) in \(P\)". In particular, this generalizes the common notion of poset probability for finite posets, where \(π(a,b)\) is the proportion of linear extensions of \(P\) in which \(a\) precedes \(b\). They constructed a family of such functions for posets embedded in the ordered plane; that is two say, for posets of order dimension at most two. We study probability functions of a finite poset \(P\) by constructing an ancillary poset \(\tilde{P}\), that we call *probability functions posets*. The relations of this new poset encodes the restrictions imposed on probability functions of the original poset by the conditions of the definition. Then, we define the probability functions polytope, which parameterizes the probability functions on \(P\), and show that it can be realized as the order polytope of \(\tilde{P}\) intersected by a certain affine subspace. We give a partial description of the vertices of probability functions polytope and show that, in contrast to the order polytope, it is not always a lattice polytope.

Determining inscribability of polytopes via rank minimization based on slack matrices
A polytope is inscribable if there is a realization where all vertices lie on the sphere. In this paper, we provide a necessary and sufficient condition for a polytope to be inscribable. Based on this condition, we characterize the problem of determining inscribability as a minimum rank optimization problem using slack matrices. We propose an SDP approximation for the minimum rank optimization problem and prove that it is tight for certain classes of polytopes. Given a polytope, we provide three algorithms to determine its inscribability. All the optimization problems and algorithms we propose in this paper depend on the number of vertices and facets but are independent of the dimension of the polytope. Numerical results demonstrate our SDP approximation's efficiency, accuracy, and robustness for determining inscribability of simplicial polytopes of dimensions $4\le d\le 8$ with vertices $n\le 10$, revealing its potential in high dimensions.
Toric ideal of matching polytopes and edge colorings
In the present paper, we investigate the maximal degree of minimal generators of the toric ideal of the matching polytope of a graph. It is known that the toric ideal associated to a bipartite graph is generated by binomials of degree at most $3$. We show that this fact is equivalent to a result in the theory of edge colorings of bipartite multigraphs. Moreover, a characterization of bipartite graphs whose toric ideals are generated by quadratic binomials is given. Finally, we discuss the maximal degree of minimal generators of the toric ideal associated to a general graph and give a conjecture.
Advancing Geometry with AI: Multi-agent Generation of Polytopes
Polytopes are one of the most primitive concepts underlying geometry. Discovery and study of polytopes with complex structures provides a means of advancing scientific knowledge. Construction of polytopes with specific extremal structure is very difficult and time-consuming. Having an automated tool for the generation of such extremal examples is therefore of great value. We present an Artificial Intelligence system capable of generating novel polytopes with very high complexity, whose abilities we demonstrate in three different and challenging scenarios: the Hirsch Conjecture, the k-neighbourly problem and the longest monotone paths problem. For each of these three problems the system was able to generate novel examples, which match or surpass the best previously known bounds. Our main focus was the Hirsch Conjecture, which had remained an open problem for over 50 years. The highly parallel A.I. system presented in this paper was able to generate millions of examples, with many of them surpassing best known previous results and possessing properties not present in the earlier human-constructed examples. For comparison, it took leading human experts over 50 years to handcraft the first example of a polytope exceeding the bound conjectured by Hirsch, and in the decade since humans were able to construct only a scarce few families of such counterexample polytopes. With the adoption of computer-aided methods, the creation of new examples of mathematical objects stops being a domain reserved only for human expertise. Advances in A.I. provide mathematicians with yet another powerful tool in advancing mathematical knowledge. The results presented demonstrate that A.I. is capable of addressing problems in geometry recognized as extremely hard, and also to produce extremal examples different in nature from the ones constructed by humans.

White's conjecture for matroids and inner projections
White's conjecture predicts quadratic generators for the ideal of any matroid base polytope. We prove that White's conjecture for any matroid $M$ implies it also for any matroid $M'$, where $M$ and $M'$ differ by one basis. Our study is motivated by inner projections of algebraic varieties.

When alcoved polytopes add
Alcoved polytopes are characterized by the property that all facet normal directions are parallel to the roots $e_i-e_j$. Unlike other prominent families of polytopes, like generalized permutahedra, alcoved polytopes are not closed under Minkowski sums. We nonetheless show that the Minkowski sum of a collection of alcoved polytopes is alcoved if and only if each pairwise sum is alcoved. This implies that the type fan of alcoved polytopes is determined by its two-dimensional cones. Moreover, we provide a complete characterization of when the Minkowski sum of alcoved simplices is again alcoved via a graphical criterion on pairs of ordered set partitions. Our characterization reduces to checking conditions on restricted partitions of length at most six. In particular, we show how the Minkowski sum decompositions of the two most well-known families of alcoved polytopes, the associahedron and the cyclohedron, fit in our framework. Additionally, inspired by the physical construction of one-loop scattering amplitudes, we present a new infinite family of alcoved polytopes, called $\widehat{D}_n$ polytopes. We conclude by drawing a connection to matroidal blade arrangements and the Dressian.

Strongly self-dual polytopes
This article aims to study the class of strongly self-dual polytopes (ssd-polytopes for short), defined in a paper by Lovász \cite{lovasz}. He described a series of such polytopes (called $L$-type polytopes), which he used to solve a combinatorial problem. From a geometrical point of view, there are interesting questions: what additional elements of this class exist, and are there any with a different structure from the $L$-type ones? We show that in dimension three, one of their faces defines $L$-type polyhedra. Illustrating the algorithm of the proof, we present an ssd-polytope of 23 vertices whose combinatorial structure differ from those of $L$-type ones. Finally, with an elementary discussion, we prove that for fewer than nine vertices, there are only fifth one ssd-polyhedra, four of them can be constructed by Lovász's method, and we can find the fifth one with "the diameter gradient flow algorithm" of Katz, Memoli and Wang \cite{katz-memoli-wang}.
Combinatorial Seshadri stratifications on normal toric varieties
We apply the theory of Seshadri stratifications to embedded toric varieties $X_P\subseteq \mathbb P(V)$ associated with a normal lattice polytope $P$. The approach presented here is purely combinatorial and completely independent of \cite{CFL}. In particular, we get a close connection between a certain class of triangulations of the polytope $P$, Seshadri stratifications of $X_P$ arising from torus orbit closures, and the associated degenerate semi-toric varieties. In the last section we show that the approach here and the one in \cite{CFL} produce the same quasi-valuations and hence the same degenerations of $X_P$.
On the Set of Balanced Games
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the geometric structure of the set of cooperative transferable utility games having a nonempty core, characterized by Bondareva and Shapley as balanced games. We show that this set is a nonpointed polyhedral cone, and we find the set of its extremal rays and facets. This study is also done for the set of balanced games whose value for the grand coalition is fixed, which yields an affine nonpointed polyhedral cone. Finally, the case of nonnegative balanced games with fixed value for the grand coalition is tackled. This set is a convex polytope, with remarkable properties. We characterize its vertices and facets, study the adjacency structure of vertices, develop an algorithm for generating vertices in a random uniform way, and show that this polytope is combinatorial and its adjacency graph is Hamiltonian. Last, we give a characterization of the set of games having a core reduced to a singleton. Funding: This work was supported by the Spanish Government [Grant PID2021-124933NB-I00].
A refined lower bound theorem for $d$-polytopes with at most $2d$ vertices
In 1967, Grünbaum conjectured that the function $$ φ_k(d+s,d):=\binom{d+1}{k+1}+\binom{d}{k+1}-\binom{d+1-s}{k+1},\; \text{for $2\le s\le d$} $$ provides the minimum number of $k$-faces for a $d$-dimensional polytope (abbreviated as a $d$-polytope) with $d+s$ vertices. In 2021, Xue proved this conjecture for each $k\in[1\ldots d-2]$ and characterised the unique minimisers, each having $d+2$ facets. In this paper, we refine Xue's theorem by considering $d$-polytopes with $d+s$ vertices ($2\le s\le d$) and at least $d+3$ facets. If $s=2$, then there is precisely one minimiser for many values of $k$. For other values of $s$, the number of $k$-faces is at least $φ_k(d+s,d)+\binom{d-1}{k}-\binom{d+1-s}{k}$, which is met by precisely two polytopes in many cases, and up to five polytopes for certain values of $s$ and $k$. We also characterise the minimising polytopes.

Newton-Okounkov bodies obtained from certain orbits of plabic graphs
We investigate the plabic graphs corresponding to the quadrilateral Postnikov arrangements used by J.Scott to equip the homogeneous coordinate rings of Grassmannians with a cluster structure. More precisely we describe their orbits under the natural action of the dihedral group and show that the associated Newton-Okounkov bodies are all unimodular equivalent to Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes.

Stable Set Polytopes with Rank $|V(G)|/3$ for the Lovász--Schrijver SDP Operator
We study the lift-and-project rank of the stable set polytope of graphs with respect to the Lovász--Schrijver SDP operator $\text{LS}_+$ applied to the fractional stable set polytope. In particular, we show that for every positive integer $\ell$, the smallest possible graph with $\text{LS}_+$-rank $\ell$ contains $3\ell$ vertices. This result is sharp and settles a conjecture posed by Lipták and the second author in 2003, as well as answers a generalization of a problem posed by Knuth in 1994. We also show that for every positive integer $\ell$ there exists a vertex-transitive graph on $4\ell+12$ vertices with $\text{LS}_+$-rank at least $\ell$.
