Quantum and affine Schubert calculus and Macdonald polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We definitively establish that the theory of symmetric Macdonald polynomials aligns with quantum and affine Schubert calculus using a discovery that distinguished weak chains can be identified by chains in the strong (Bruhat) order poset on the type-$A$ affine Weyl group. We construct two one-parameter families of functions that respectively transition positively with Hall-Littlewood and Macdonald's $P$-functions, and specialize to the representatives for Schubert classes of homology and cohomology of the affine Grassmannian. Our approach leads us to conjecture that all elements in a defining set of 3-point genus 0 Gromov-Witten invariants for flag manifolds can be formulated as strong covers.

Double transitivity of Galois Groups in Schubert Calculus of Grassmannians
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate double transitivity of Galois groups in the classical Schubert calculus on Grassmannians. We show that all Schubert problems on Grassmannians of 2- and 3-planes have doubly transitive Galois groups, as do all Schubert problems involving only special Schubert conditions. We use these results to give a new proof that Schubert problems on Grassmannians of 2-planes have Galois groups that contain the alternating group. We also investigate the Galois group of every Schubert problem on Gr(4,8), finding that each Galois group either contains the alternating group or is an imprimitive permutation group and therefore fails to be doubly transitive. These imprimitive examples show that our results are the best possible general results on double transitivity of Schubert problems.

Root-theoretic Young diagrams and Schubert calculus II
Published • View PublicationBIB
We continue the study of root-theoretic Young diagrams (RYDs) from [Searles-Yong '13]. We provide an RYD formula for the $GL_n$ Belkale-Kumar product, after [Knutson-Purbhoo '11], and we give a translation of the indexing set of [Buch-Kresch-Tamvakis '09] for Schubert varieties of non-maximal isotropic Grassmannians into RYDs. We then use this translation to prove that the RYD formulas of [Searles-Yong '13] for Schubert calculus of the classical (co)adjoint varieties agree with the Pieri rules of [Buch-Kresch-Tamvakis '09], which were needed in the proofs of the (co)adjoint formulas.

Billey's formula in combinatorics, geometry, and topology
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this expository paper we describe a powerful combinatorial formula and its implications in geometry, topology, and algebra. This formula first appeared in the appendix of a book by Andersen, Jantzen, and Soergel. Sara Billey discovered it independently five years later, and it played a prominent role in her work to evaluate certain polynomials closely related to Schubert polynomials. Billey's formula relates many pieces of Schubert calculus: the geometry of Schubert varieties, the action of the torus on the flag variety, combinatorial data about permutations, the cohomology of the flag variety and of the Schubert varieties, and the combinatorics of root systems (generalizing inversions of a permutation). Combinatorially, Billey's formula describes an invariant of pairs of elements of a Weyl group. On its face, this formula is a combination of roots built from subwords of a fixed word. As we will see, it has deeper geometric and topological meaning as well: (1) It tells us about the tangent spaces at each permutation flag in each Schubert variety. (2) It tells us about singular points in Schubert varieties. (3) It tells us about the values of Kostant polynomials. Billey's formula also reflects an aspect of GKM theory, which is a way of describing the torus-equivariant cohomology of a variety just from information about the torus-fixed points in the variety. This paper will also describe some applications of Billey's formula, including concrete combinatorial descriptions of Billey's formula in special cases, and ways to bootstrap Billey's formula to describe the equivariant cohomology of subvarieties of the flag variety to which GKM theory does not apply.

Root-theoretic Young diagrams and Schubert calculus: planarity and the adjoint varieties
Published in J. Algebra, Volume 448, 15 February 2016, p. 238-293 • View PublicationBIB
We study root-theoretic Young diagrams to investigate the existence of a Lie-type uniform and nonnegative combinatorial rule for Schubert calculus. We provide formulas for (co)adjoint varieties of classical Lie type. This is a simplest case after the (co)minuscule family (where a rule has been proved by H.Thomas and the second author using work of R.Proctor). Our results build on earlier Pieri-type rules of P.Pragacz-J.Ratajski and of A.Buch-A.Kresch-H.Tamvakis. Specifically, our formula for OG(2,2n) is the first complete rule for a case where diagrams are non-planar. Yet the formulas possess both uniform and non-uniform features. Using these classical type rules, as well as results of P.-E.Chaput-N.Perrin in the exceptional types, we suggest a connection between polytopality of the set of nonzero Schubert structure constants and planarity of the diagrams. This is an addition to work of A.Klyachko and A.Knutson-T.Tao on the Grassmannian and of K.Purbhoo-F.Sottile on cominuscule varieties, where the diagrams are always planar.

Whittaker functions, geometric crystals, and quantum Schubert calculus
Published • View PublicationBIB
This mostly expository article explores recent developments in the relations between the three objects in the title from an algebro-combinatorial perspective. We prove a formula for Whittaker functions of a real semisimple group as an integral over a geometric crystal in the sense of Berenstein-Kazhdan. We explain the connections of this formula to the program of mirror symmetry of flag varieties developed by Givental and Rietsch; in particular, the integral formula proves the equivariant version of Rietsch's mirror symmetry conjecture. We also explain the idea that Whittaker functions should be thought of as geometric analogues of irreducible characters of finite-dimensional representations.

Some conjectures regarding certain Schubert structure constants in Lie types B and D
I give the details of some conjectures regarding Schubert calculus in Lie types B and D. Specifically, I conjecture rules for Schubert structure constants $c_{u,v}^w$ when $X_{w_0u}^v$ is a Richardson variety stable under the spherical Levi subgroup $\C^* \times SO(n-2,\C)$ of $SO(n,\C)$.

Generalized Schubert Calculus
Published in Journal of the Ramanujan Mathematical Society 28A (Special Issue-2013) pp. 1-42 • Search Publication
In this paper we study the T-equivariant generalized cohomology of flag varieties using two models, the Borel model and the moment graph model. We study the differences between the Schubert classes and the Bott-Samelson classes. After setup of the general framework we compute, for classes of Schubert varieties of complex dimension <4 in rank 2 (including A_2, B_2, G_2 and A_1^{(1)}), moment graph representatives, Pieri-Chevalley formulas and products of Schubert classes. These computations generalize the computations in equivariant K-theory for rank 2 cases which are given in Griffeth-Ram arXiv:math/0405333.

Eigenvalues of Hermitian matrices and equivariant cohomology of Grassmannians
Published in Compositio Math. vol 149 (2013), pp 1569-1582 • View PublicationBIB
The saturation theorem of [Knutson-Tao '99] concerns the nonvanishing of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. In combination with work of [Klyachko '98], it implies [Horn '62]'s conjecture about eigenvalues of sums of Hermitian matrices. This eigenvalue problem has a generalization [Friedland '00] to majorized sums of Hermitian matrices. We further illustrate the common features between these two eigenvalue problems and their connection to Schubert calculus of Grassmannians. Our main result gives a Schubert calculus interpretation of Friedland's problem, via equivariant cohomology of Grassmannians. In particular, we prove a saturation theorem for this setting. Our arguments employ the aformentioned work together with [Thomas-Yong '12].

Schubert calculus of Richardson varieties stable under spherical Levi subgroups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We observe that the expansion in the basis of Schubert cycles for $H^*(G/B)$ of the class of a Richardson variety stable under a spherical Levi subgroup is described by a theorem of Brion. Using this observation, along with a combinatorial model of the poset of certain symmetric subgroup orbit closures, we give positive combinatorial descriptions of certain Schubert structure constants on the full flag variety in type $A$. Namely, we describe $c_{u,v}^w$ when $u$ and $v$ are inverse to Grassmannian permutations with unique descents at $p$ and $q$, respectively. We offer some conjectures for similar rules in types $B$ and $D$, associated to Richardson varieties stable under spherical Levi subgroups of $SO(2n+1,\C)$ and $SO(2n,\C)$, respectively.

Equivariant Schubert calculus and jeu de taquin
Published in Ann. Inst. Fourier (Grenoble) 68 (2018), no. 1, 275-318 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce edge labeled Young tableaux. Our main results provide a corresponding analogue of [Schützenberger '77]'s theory of jeu de taquin. These are applied to the equivariant Schubert calculus of Grassmannians. Reinterpreting, we present new (semi)standard tableaux to study factorial Schur polynomials, after [Biedenharn-Louck '89], [Macdonald '92] and [Goulden-Greene '94] and others. Consequently, we obtain new combinatorial rules for the Schubert structure coefficients, complementing work of [Molev-Sagan '99], [Knutson-Tao '03], [Molev '08] and [Kreiman '09]. We also describe a conjectural generalization of one of our rules to the equivariant K-theory of Grassmannians, extending work of [Thomas-Yong '07]. This conjecture concretely realizes the "positivity" known to exist by [Anderson-Griffeth-Miller '08]. It provides an alternative to the conjectural rule of Knutson-Vakil reported in [Coskun-Vakil '06].

Positroid Varieties: Juggling and Geometry
Published • View PublicationBIB
While the intersection of the Grassmannian Bruhat decompositions for all coordinate flags is an intractable mess, the intersection of only the cyclic shifts of one Bruhat decomposition turns out to have many of the good properties of the Bruhat and Richardson decompositions. This decomposition coincides with the projection of the Richardson stratification of the flag manifold, studied by Lusztig, Rietsch, Brown-Goodearl-Yakimov and the present authors. However, its cyclic-invariance is hidden in this description. Postnikov gave many cyclic-invariant ways to index the strata, and we give a new one, by a subset of the affine Weyl group we call bounded juggling patterns. We call the strata positroid varieties. Applying results from the authors' previous work, we show that positroid varieties are normal, Cohen-Macaulay, have rational singularities, and are defined as schemes by the vanishing of Plucker coordinates. We prove that their associated cohomology classes are represented by affine Stanley functions. This last fact lets us connect Postnikov's and Buch-Kresch-Tamvakis' approaches to quantum Schubert calculus.

Equivariant quantum Schubert polynomials
Published in Adv. Math. 254 (2014), 300--330 • View PublicationBIB
We establish an equivariant quantum Giambelli formula for partial flag varieties. The answer is given in terms of a specialization of universal double Schubert polynomials. Along the way, we give new proofs of the presentation of the equivariant quantum cohomology ring, as well as Graham-positivity of the structure constants in equivariant quantum Schubert calculus.

Affine and degenerate affine BMW algebras: The center
Published • View PublicationBIB
The degenerate affine and affine BMW algebras arise naturally in the context of Schur-Weyl duality for orthogonal and symplectic Lie algebras and quantum groups, respectively. Cyclotomic BMW algebras, affine Hecke algebras, cyclotomic Hecke algebras, and their degenerate versions are quotients. In this paper the theory is unified by treating the orthogonal and symplectic cases simultaneously; we make an exact parallel between the degenerate affine and affine cases via a new algebra which takes the role of the affine braid group for the degenerate setting. A main result of this paper is an identification of the centers of the affine and degenerate affine BMW algebras in terms of rings of symmetric functions which satisfy a "cancellation property" or "wheel condition" (in the degenerate case, a reformulation of a result of Nazarov). Miraculously, these same rings also arise in Schubert calculus, as the cohomology and K-theory of isotropic Grassmanians and symplectic loop Grassmanians. We also establish new intertwiner-like identities which, when projected to the center, produce the recursions for central elements given previously by Nazarov for degenerate affine BMW algebras, and by Beliakova-Blanchet for affine BMW algebras.

The Wronski map and shifted tableau theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Mukhin-Tarasov-Varchenko Theorem, conjectured by B. and M. Shapiro, has a number of interesting consequences. Among them is a well-behaved correspondence between certain points on a Grassmannian - those sent by the Wronski map to polynomials with only real roots - and (dual equivalence classes of) Young tableaux. In this paper, we restrict this correspondence to the orthogonal Grassmannian OG(n,2n+1) inside Gr(n,2n+1). We prove that a point lies on OG(n,2n+1) if and only if the corresponding tableau has a certain type of symmetry. From this we recover much of the theory of shifted tableaux for Schubert calculus on OG(n,2n+1), including a new, geometric proof of the Littlewood-Richardson rule for OG(n,2n+1).

Puzzles, positroid varieties, and equivariant K-theory of Grassmannians
Vakil studied the intersection theory of Schubert varieties in the Grassmannian in a very direct way: he degenerated the intersection of a Schubert variety X_mu and opposite Schubert variety X^nu to a union {X^lambda}, with repetition. This degeneration proceeds in stages, and along the way he met a collection of more complicated subvarieties, which he identified as the closures of certain locally closed sets. We show that Vakil's varieties are _positroid varieties_, which in particular shows they are normal, Cohen-Macaulay, have rational singularities, and are defined by the vanishing of Plücker coordinates [Knutson-Lam-Speyer]. We determine the equations of the Vakil variety associated to a partially filled ``puzzle'' (building on the appendix to [Vakil]), and extend Vakil's proof to give a geometric proof of the puzzle rule from [Knutson-Tao '03] for equivariant Schubert calculus. The recent paper [Anderson-Griffeth-Miller] establishes (abstractly; without a formula) three positivity results in equivariant K-theory of flag manifolds G/P. We demonstrate one of these concretely, giving a corresponding puzzle rule.

Some lower bounds in the B. and M. Shapiro conjecture for flag varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
The B. and M. Shapiro conjecture stated that all solutions of the Schubert Calculus problems associated with real points on the rational normal curve should be real. For Grassmannians, it was proved by Mukhin, Tarasov and Varchenko. For flag varieties, Sottile found a counterexample and suggested that all solutions should be real under certain monotonicity conditions. In this paper, we compute lower bounds on the number of real solutions for some special cases of the B. and M. Shapiro conjecture for flag varieties, when Sottile's monotonicity conditions are not satisfied.

New Techniques for obtaining Schubert-type formulas for Hamiltonian manifolds
Published • View PublicationBIB
In [GT], Goldin and the second author extend some ideas from Schubert calculus to the more general setting of Hamiltonian torus actions on compact symplectic manifolds with isolated fixed points. (See also [Kn99] and [Kn08].) The main goal of this paper is to build on this work by finding more effective formulas. More explicitly, given a generic component of the moment map, they define a canonical class $α_p$ in the equivariant cohomology of the manifold $M$ for each fixed point $p \in M$. When they exist, canonical classes form a natural basis of the equivariant cohomology of $M$. In particular, when $M$ is a flag variety, these classes are the equivariant Schubert classes. It is a long standing problem in combinatorics to find positive integral formulas for the equivariant structure constants associated to this basis. Since computing the restriction of the canonical classes to the fixed points determines these structure constants, it is important to find effective formulas for these restrictions. In this paper, we introduce new techniques for calculating the restrictions of a canonical class $α_p$ to a fixed point $q$. Our formulas are nearly always simpler, in the sense that they count the contributions over fewer paths. Moreover, our formula is manifestly positive and integral in certain important special cases.
