On the coproduct in affine Schubert calculus
Published • View PublicationBIB
The cohomology of the affine flag variety of a complex reductive group is a comodule over the cohomology of the affine Grassmannian. We give positive formulae for the coproduct of an affine Schubert class in terms of affine Stanley classes and finite Schubert classes, in (torus-equivariant) cohomology and K-theory. As an application, we deduce monomial positivity for the affine Schubert polynomials of the second author.
The A.B.C.Ds of Schubert calculus
Published in Seminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire, B85a (2020), 12 pp • Search Publication
We collect Atiyah-Bott Combinatorial Dreams (A.B.C.Ds) in Schubert calculus. One result relates equivariant structure coefficients for two isotropic flag manifolds, with consequences to the thesis of C. Monical. We contextualize using work of N. Bergeron-F. Sottile, S. Billey-M. Haiman, P. Pragacz, and T. Ikeda-L. Mihalcea-I. Naruse. The relation complements a theorem of A. Kresch-H. Tamvakis in quantum cohomology. Results of A. Buch-V. Ravikumar rule out a similar correspondence in K-theory.

K-theoretic crystals for set-valued tableaux of rectangular shapes
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics 5(3), 2022, 515-536 • View PublicationBIB
In earlier work with C.~Monical, we introduced the notion of a K-crystal, with applications to K-theoretic Schubert calculus and the study of Lascoux polynomials. We conjectured that such a K-crystal structure existed on the set of semistandard set-valued tableaux of any fixed rectangular shape. Here, we establish this conjecture by explicitly constructing the K-crystal operators. As a consequence, we establish the first combinatorial formula for Lascoux polynomials $L_{wλ}$ when $λ$ is a multiple of a fundamental weight as the sum over flagged set-valued tableaux. Using this result, we then prove corresponding cases of conjectures of Ross--Yong (2015) and Monical (2016) by constructing bijections with the respective combinatorial objects.

Schubert Derivations on the Infinite Wedge Power
The {\em Schubert derivation} is a distinguished Hasse-Schmidt derivation on the exterior algebra of a free abelian group, encoding the formalism of Schubert calculus for all Grassmannians at once. The purpose of this paper is to extend the Schubert derivation to the infinite exterior power of a free ${\mathbb Z}$-module of infinite rank (fermionic Fock space). Classical vertex operators naturally arise from the {\em integration by parts formula}, that also recovers the generating function occurring in the {\em bosonic vertex representation} of the Lie algebra $gl_\infty({\mathbb Z})$, due to Date, Jimbo, Kashiwara and Miwa (DJKM). In the present framework, the DJKM result will be interpreted as a limit case of the following general observation: the singular cohomology of the complex Grassmannian $G(r,n)$ is an irreducible representation of the Lie algebra of $n\times n$ square matrices.}

Restricting Schubert classes to symplectic Grassmannians using self-dual puzzles
Given a Schubert class on $Gr(k,V)$ where $V$ is a symplectic vector space of dimension $2n$, we consider its restriction to the symplectic Grassmannian $SpGr(k,V)$ of isotropic subspaces. Pragacz gave tableau formulae for positively computing the expansion of these $H^*(Gr(k,V))$ classes into Schubert classes of the target when $k=n$, which corresponds to expanding Schur polynomials into $Q$-Schur polynomials. Coskun described an algorithm for their expansion when $k\leq n$. We give a puzzle-based formula for these expansions, while extending them to equivariant cohomology. We make use of a new observation that usual Grassmannian puzzle pieces are already enough to do some $2$-step Schubert calculus, and apply techniques from quantum integrable systems (``scattering diagrams'').

Bumpless Pipedreams, Reduced Word Tableaux and Stanley Symmetric Functions
Lam, Lee and Shimozono introduced the structure of bumpless pipedreams in their study of back stable Schubert calculus. They found that a specific family of bumpless pipedreams, called EG-pipedreams, can be used to interpret the Edelman-Greene coefficients appearing in the expansion of a Stanley symmetric function in the basis of Schur functions. It is well known that the Edelman-Greene coefficients can also be interpreted in terms of reduced word tableaux for permutations. Lam, Lee and Shimozono proposed the problem of finding a shape preserving bijection between reduced word tableaux for a permutation $w$ and EG-pipedreams of $w$. In this paper, we construct such a bijection. The key ingredients are two new developed isomorphic tree structures associated to $w$: the modified Lascoux-Schützenberger tree of $w$ and the Edelman-Greene tree of $w$. Using the Little map, we show that the leaves in the modified Lascoux-Schützenberger of $w$ are in bijection with the reduced word tableaux for $w$. On the other hand, applying the droop operation on bumpless pipedreams also introduced by Lam, Lee and Shimozono, we show that the leaves in the Edelman-Greene tree of $w$ are in bijection with the EG-pipedreams of $w$. This allows us to establish a shape preserving one-to-one correspondence between reduced word tableaux for $w$ and EG-pipedreams of $w$.

A formula for the cohomology and $K$-class of a regular Hessenberg variety
Published in J. Pure Appl. Algebra 224 (2020) Article 106230 • View PublicationBIB
Hessenberg varieties are subvarieties of the flag variety parametrized by a linear operator $X$ and a nondecreasing function $h$. The family of Hessenberg varieties for regular $X$ is particularly important: they are used in quantum cohomology, in combinatorial and geometric representation theory, in Schubert calculus and affine Schubert calculus. We show that the classes of a regular Hessenberg variety in the cohomology and $K$-theory of the flag variety are given by making certain substitutions in the Schubert polynomial (respectively Grothendieck polynomial) for a permutation that depends only on $h$. Our formula and our methods are different from a recent result of Abe, Fujita, and Zeng that gives the class of a regular Hessenberg variety with more restrictions on $h$ than here.

Back stable Schubert calculus
Published in Compositio Math. 157 (2021) 883-962 • View PublicationBIB
We study the back stable Schubert calculus of the infinite flag variety. Our main results are: 1) a formula for back stable (double) Schubert classes expressing them in terms of a symmetric function part and a finite part; 2) a novel definition of double and triple Stanley symmetric functions; 3) a proof of the positivity of double Edelman-Greene coefficients generalizing the results of Edelman-Greene and Lascoux-Schutzenberger; 4) the definition of a new class of bumpless pipedreams, giving new formulae for double Schubert polynomials, back stable double Schubert polynomials, and a new form of the Edelman-Greene insertion algorithm; 5) the construction of the Peterson subalgebra of the infinite nilHecke algebra, extending work of Peterson in the affine case; 6) equivariant Pieri rules for the homology of the infinite Grassmannian; 7) homology divided difference operators that create the equivariant homology Schubert classes of the infinite Grassmannian.

Decomposition of tensor products of Demazure crystals
Published • View PublicationBIB
A Demazure crystal is the basis at $q=0$ of a Demazure module. Demazure crystals play an important role in Schubert calculus because the character of a Demazure crystal in type A is identical to a key polynomial, which is closely related to Schubert polynomials. In this paper, we study tensor products of Demazure crystals. Each connected component of a tensor product of Demazure crystals need not be isomorphic to some Demazure crystal. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for every connected component of a tensor product to be isomorphic to some Demazure crystal. Also, we obtain the explicit formula for connected components. As applications, we study the positivity for structure constants of products of key polynomials, and we obtain an equation of crystals, which is an analog of the Leibniz rule for Demazure operators.

Variations on a Theme of Schubert Calculus
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this tutorial, we provide an overview of many of the established combinatorial and algebraic tools of Schubert calculus, the modern area of enumerative geometry that encapsulates a wide variety of topics involving intersections of linear spaces. It is intended as a guide for readers with a combinatorial bent to understand and appreciate the geometric and topological aspects of Schubert calculus, and conversely for geometric-minded readers to gain familiarity with the relevant combinatorial tools in this area. We lead the reader through a tour of three variations on a theme: Grassmannians, flag varieties, and orthogonal Grassmannians. The orthogonal Grassmannian, unlike the ordinary Grassmannian and the flag variety, has not yet been addressed very often in textbooks, so this presentation may be helpful as an introduction to type B Schubert calculus. This work is adapted from the author's lecture notes for a graduate workshop during the Equivariant Combinatorics Workshop at the Center for Mathematics Research, Montreal, June 12-16, 2017.

Skew divided difference operators in the Nichols algebra associated to a finite Coxeter group
Let $(W,S)$ be a finite Coxeter system with root system $R$ and with set of positive roots $R^+$. For $α\in R$, $v,w\in W$, we denote by $\partial_α$, $\partial_w$ and $\partial_{w/v}$ the divided difference operators and skew divided difference operators acting on the coinvariant algebra of $W$. Generalizing the work of Liu, we prove that $\partial_{w/v}$ can be written as a polynomial with nonnegative coefficients in $\partial_α$ where $α\in R^+$. In fact, we prove the stronger and analogous statement in the Nichols-Woronowicz algebra model for Schubert calculus on $W$ after Bazlov. We draw consequences of this theorem on saturated chains in the Bruhat order, and partially treat the question when $\partial_{w/v}$ can be written as a monomial in $\partial_α$ where $α\in R^+$. In an appendix, we study related combinatorics on shuffle elements and Bruhat intervals of length two.

Affine Schubert calculus and double coinvariants
We define an action of the double coinvariant algebra $DR_n$ on the equivariant Borel-Moore homology of the affine flag variety $\widetilde{Fl}_n$ in type $A$, which has an explicit form in terms of the left and right action of the (extended) affine Weyl group and multiplication by Chern classes. Up to first order in the augmentation ideal, we show that it coincides with the action of the Cherednik algebra on the equivariant homology of the homogeneous affine Springer fiber $\widetilde{S}_{n,m} \subset \widetilde{Fl}_n$ due to Yun and the second author, and therefore preserves the non-equivariant Borel-Moore homology groups $H_*(\widetilde{S}_{n,m})\hookrightarrow H_*(\widetilde{Fl}_n)$. We then define a geometric filtration $F_{a} H_*(\widetilde{S}_{n,n+1})=H_*(\widetilde{S}(a))$ by closed subspaces $\widetilde{S}(a)\subset \widetilde{S}_{n,n+1}$, which we prove recovers the Garsia-Stanton descent order on $DR_n$. We use this to deduce an explicit monomial basis of $DR_n$, as well as an independent proof of the (non-compositional) Shuffle Theorem.

Orbits of Plane Partitions of Exceptional Lie Type
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 74, 2018, 90-109 • View PublicationBIB
For each minuscule flag variety $X$, there is a corresponding minuscule poset, describing its Schubert decomposition. We study an action on plane partitions over such posets, introduced by P. Cameron and D. Fon-der-Flaass (1995). For plane partitions of height at most $2$, D. Rush and X. Shi (2013) proved an instance of the cyclic sieving phenomenon, completely describing the orbit structure of this action. They noted their result does not extend to greater heights in general; however, when $X$ is one of the two minuscule flag varieties of exceptional Lie type $E$, they conjectured explicit instances of cyclic sieving for all heights. We prove their conjecture in the case that $X$ is the Cayley-Moufang plane of type $E_6$. For the other exceptional minuscule flag variety, the Freudenthal variety of type $E_7$, we establish their conjecture for heights at most $4$, but show that it fails generally. We further give a new proof of an unpublished cyclic sieving of D. Rush and X. Shi (2011) for plane partitions of any height in the case $X$ is an even-dimensional quadric hypersurface. Our argument uses ideas of K. Dilks, O. Pechenik, and J. Striker (2017) to relate the action on plane partitions to combinatorics derived from $K$-theoretic Schubert calculus.

Newton-Okounkov bodies, cluster duality, and mirror symmetry for Grassmannians
Published in Duke Math. J. 168, no. 18 (2019), 3437-3527 • View PublicationBIB
We use cluster structures and mirror symmetry to explicitly describe a natural class of Newton-Okounkov bodies for Grassmannians. We consider the Grassmannian $X=Gr_{n-k}(\mathbb C^n)$, as well as the mirror dual Landau-Ginzburg model $(\check{X}^\circ, W_q:\check{X}^\circ \to \mathbb C)$, where $\check{X}^\circ$ is the complement of a particular anti-canonical divisor in a Langlands dual Grassmannian $\check{X} = Gr_k((\mathbb C^n)^*)$, and the superpotential W_q has a simple expression in terms of Plücker coordinates. Grassmannians simultaneously have the structure of an $\mathcal{A}$-cluster variety and an $\mathcal{X}$-cluster variety. Given a cluster seed G, we consider two associated coordinate systems: a $\mathcal X$-cluster chart $Φ_G:(\mathbb C^*)^{k(n-k)}\to X^{\circ}$ and a $\mathcal A$-cluster chart $Φ_G^{\vee}:(\mathbb C^*)^{k(n-k)}\to \check{X}^\circ$. To each $\mathcal X$-cluster chart $Φ_G$ and ample `boundary divisor' $D$ in $X\setminus X^{\circ}$, we associate a Newton-Okounkov body $Δ_G(D)$ in $\mathbb R^{k(n-k)}$, which is defined as the convex hull of rational points. On the other hand using the $\mathcal A$-cluster chart $Φ_G^{\vee}$ on the mirror side, we obtain a set of rational polytopes, described by inequalities, by writing the superpotential $W_q$ in the $\mathcal A$-cluster coordinates, and then "tropicalising". Our main result is that the Newton-Okounkov bodies $Δ_G(D)$ and the polytopes obtained by tropicalisation coincide. As an application, we construct degenerations of the Grassmannian to toric varieties corresponding to these Newton-Okounkov bodies. Additionally, when $G$ corresponds to a plabic graph, we give a formula for the lattice points of the Newton-Okounkov bodies, which has an interpretation in terms of quantum Schubert calculus.

Shifted tableaux crystals
We introduce coplactic raising and lowering operators $E'_i$, $F'_i$, $E_i$, and $F_i$ on shifted skew semistandard tableaux. We show that the primed operators and unprimed operators each independently form type A Kashiwara crystals (but not Stembridge crystals) on the same underlying set and with the same weight functions. When taken together, the result is a new kind of `doubled crystal' structure that recovers the combinatorics of type B Schubert calculus: the highest-weight elements of our crystals are precisely the shifted Littlewood-Richardson tableaux, and their generating functions are the (skew) Schur $Q$-functions. We give local axioms for these crystals, which closely resemble the Stembridge axioms for type A. Finally, we give a new criterion for such tableaux to be ballot.

The equivariant cohomology of weighted flag orbifolds
Published • View PublicationBIB
We describe the torus-equivariant cohomology of weighted partial flag orbifolds ${\mathrm{w}}Σ$ of type $A$. We establish counterparts of several results known for the partial flag variety that collectively constitute what we refer to as ``Schubert Calculus on ${\mathrm{w}}Σ$''. For the weighed Schubert classes in ${\mathrm{w}}Σ$, we give the Chevalley's formula. In addition, we define the weighted analogue of double Schubert polynomials and give the corresponding Chevalley--Monk's formula.

Colorful combinatorics and Macdonald polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
The non-negative integer cocharge statistic on words was introduced in the 1970's by Lascoux and Schützenberger to combinatorially characterize the Hall-Littlewood polynomials. Cocharge has since been used to explain phenomena ranging from the graded decomposition of Garsia-Procesi modules to the cohomology structure of the Grassman variety. Although its application to contemporary variations of these problems had been deemed intractable, we prove that the two-parameter, symmetric Macdonald polynomials are generating functions of a distinguished family of colored words. Cocharge adorns one parameter and the second measures its deviation from cocharge on words without color. We use the same framework to expand the plactic monoid, apply Kashiwara's crystal theory to various Garsia-Haiman modules, and to address problems in K-theoretic Schubert calculus.

Vanishing of Littlewood-Richardson polynomials is in P

J. DeLoera-T. McAllister and K. D. Mulmuley-H. Narayanan-M. Sohoni independently proved that determining the vanishing of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients has strongly polynomial time computational complexity. Viewing these as Schubert calculus numbers, we prove the generalization to the Littlewood-Richardson polynomials that control equivariant cohomology of Grassmannians. We construct a polytope using the edge-labeled tableau rule of H. Thomas-A. Yong. Our proof then combines a saturation theorem of D. Anderson-E. Richmond-A. Yong, a reading order independence property, and E. Tardos' algorithm for combinatorial linear programming.

Applying Parabolic Peterson: Affine Algebras and the Quantum Cohomology of the Grassmannian
Published in J. Comb. 10 (2019), no. 1, 129-162 • View PublicationBIB
The Peterson isomorphism relates the homology of the affine Grassmannian to the quantum cohomology of any flag variety. In the case of a partial flag, Peterson's map is only a surjection, and one needs to quotient by a suitable ideal on the affine side to map isomorphically onto the quantum cohomology. We provide a detailed exposition of this parabolic Peterson isomorphism in the case of the Grassmannian of m-planes in complex n-space, including an explicit recipe for doing quantum Schubert calculus in terms of the appropriate subset of non-commutative k-Schur functions. As an application, we recast Postnikov's affine approach to the quantum cohomology of the Grassmannian as a consequence of parabolic Peterson by showing that the affine nilTemperley-Lieb algebra arises naturally when forming the requisite quotient of the homology of the affine Grassmannian.

Schubert puzzles and integrability I: invariant trilinear forms
Published • View PublicationBIB
The puzzle rules for computing Schubert calculus on $d$-step flag manifolds, proven in [Knutson Tao 2003] for $1$-step, in [Buch Kresch Purbhoo Tamvakis 2016] for $2$-step, and conjectured in [Coskun Vakil 2009] for $3$-step, lead to vector configurations (one vector for each puzzle edge label) that we recognize as the weights of some minuscule representations. The $R$-matrices of those representations (which, for $2$-step flag manifolds, involve triality of $D_4$) degenerate to give us puzzle formulae for two previously unsolved Schubert calculus problems: $K_T(2$-step flag manifolds$)$ and $K(3$-step flag manifolds$)$. The $K(3$-step flag manifolds$)$ formula, which involves 151 new puzzle pieces, implies Buch's correction to the first author's 1999 conjecture for $H^*(3$-step flag manifolds$)$.
