We give a proof of the generalized Cauchy identity for double Grothendieck polynomials, a combinatorial interpretation of the stable double Grothendieck polynomials in terms of triples of tableaux, and an interpolation between the stable double Grothendieck polynomial and the weak stable double Grothendieck polynomial. This so-called half weak stable double Grothendieck polynomial evaluated at $x=y$ generalizes the type $B$ Stanley symmetric function of Billey and Haiman and is $Q$-Schur positive by degree. We conclude with two open problems as well as a conjecture regarding the $K$-theoretic analogues of factorial Schur $Q$-functions defined by Ikeda and Naruse. The conjecture is supported by code given in the appendices.
Bilinear expansions of lattices of KP $τ$-functions in BKP $τ$-functions: a fermionic approach

We derive a bilinear expansion expressing elements of a lattice of KP $τ$-functions, labelled by partitions, as a sum over products of pairs of elements of an associated lattice of BKP $τ$-functions, labelled by strict partitions. This generalizes earlier results relating determinants and Pfaffians of minors of skew symmetric matrices, with applications to Schur functions and Schur $Q$-functions. It is deduced using the representations of KP and BKP $τ$-functions as vacuum expectation values (VEV's) of products of fermionic operators of charged and neutral type, respectively. The lattice is generated by insertion of products of pairs of charged creation and annihilation operators. The result follows from expanding the product as a sum of monomials in the neutral fermionic generators and applying a factorization theorem for VEV's of products of operators in the mutually commuting subalgebras. Applications include the case of inhomogeneous polynomial $τ$-functions of KP and BKP type.
Effective resistance is more than distance: Laplacians, Simplices and the Schur complement

This article discusses a geometric perspective on the well-known fact in graph theory that the effective resistance is a metric on the nodes of a graph. The classical proofs of this fact make use of ideas from electrical circuits or random walks; here we describe an alternative approach which combines geometric (using simplices) and algebraic (using the Schur complement) ideas. These perspectives are unified in a matrix identity of Miroslav Fiedler, which beautifully summarizes a number of related ideas at the intersection of graphs, Laplacian matrices and simplices, with the metric property of the effective resistance as a prominent consequence.

We prove that the $K$-$k$-Schur functions are part of a family of inhomogenous symmetric functions whose top homogeneous components are Catalan functions, the Euler characteristics of certain vector bundles on the flag variety. Lam-Schilling-Shimozono identified the $K$-$k$-Schur functions as Schubert representatives for $K$-homology of the affine Grassmannian for SL$_{k+1}$. Our perspective reveals that the $K$-$k$-Schur functions satisfy a shift invariance property, and we deduce positivity of their branching coefficients from a positivity result of Baldwin and Kumar. We further show that a slight adjustment of our formulation for $K$-$k$-Schur functions produces a second shift-invariant basis which conjecturally has both positive branching and a rectangle factorization property. Building on work of Ikeda-Iwao-Maeno, we conjecture that this second basis gives the images of the Lenart-Maeno quantum Grothendieck polynomials under a $K$-theoretic analog of the Peterson isomorphism.

We prove a general inclusion-exclusion relation for the extended chromatic symmetric function of a weighted graph, which specializes to (extended) $k$-deletion, and we give two methods to obtain numerous new bases from weighted graphs for the algebra of symmetric functions.
Moreover, we classify when two weighted paths have equal extended chromatic symmetric functions by proving this is equivalent to the classification of equal ribbon Schur functions. This latter classification is dependent on the operation composition of compositions, which we generalize to composition of graphs. We then apply our generalization to obtain infinitely many families of weighted graphs whose members have equal extended chromatic symmetric functions.

We use intermediate symplectic characters to give a proof and variations of Hopkins' conjecture, now proved by Hopkins and Lai, on the number of shifted plane partitions of shifted double staircase shape with bounded entries. In fact, we prove some character identities involving intermediate symplectic characters, and find generating functions for such shifted plane partitions. The key ingredients of the proof are a bialternant formula for intermediate symplectic characters, which interpolates between those for Schur functions and symplectic characters, and the Ishikawa-Wakayama minor-summation formula.
Abacus-histories and the combinatorics of creation operators

Creation operators act on symmetric functions to build Schur functions, Hall--Littlewood polynomials, and related symmetric functions one row at a time. Haglund, Morse, Zabrocki, and others have studied more general symmetric functions $H_α$, $C_α$, and $B_α$ obtained by applying any sequence of creation operators to $1$. We develop new combinatorial models for the Schur expansions of these and related symmetric functions using objects called abacus-histories. These formulas arise by chaining together smaller abacus-histories that encode the effect of an individual creation operator on a given Schur function. We give a similar treatment for operators such as multiplication by $h_m$, $h_m^{\perp}$, $ω$, etc., which serve as building blocks to construct the creation operators. We use involutions on abacus-histories to give bijective proofs of properties of the Bernstein creation operator and Hall-Littlewood polynomials indexed by three-row partitions.
Fermat's Last Theorem Implies Euclid's Infinitude of Primes

We show that Fermat's last theorem and a combinatorial theorem of Schur on monochromatic solutions of $a+b=c$ implies that there exist infinitely many primes. In particular, for small exponents such as $n=3$ or $4$ this gives a new proof of Euclid's theorem, as in this case Fermat's last theorem has a proof that does not use the infinitude of primes. Similarly, we discuss implications of Roth's theorem on arithmetic progressions, Hindman's theorem, and infinite Ramsey theory towards Euclid's theorem. As a consequence we see that Euclid's Theorem is a necessary condition for many interesting (seemingly unrelated) results in mathematics.

Schur's inequality for the sum of products of the differences of real numbers states that for $x,y,z,t\geq 0$, $x^t(x-y)(x-z) + y^t(y-z)(y-x) + z^t(z-x)(z-y) \geq 0$. In this paper we study a generalization of this inequality to more terms, more general functions of the variables and algebraic structures such as vectors and Hermitian matrices.

An identity is derived expressing Schur functions as sums over products of pairs of Schur $Q$-functions, generalizing previously known special cases. This is shown to follow from their representations as vacuum expectation values (VEV's) of products of either charged or neutral fermionic creation and annihilation operators, Wick's theorem and a factorization identity for VEV's of products of two mutually anticommuting sets of neutral fermionic operators.

Recently Galashin, Grinberg, and Liu introduced the refined dual stable Grothendieck polynomials, which are symmetric functions in $x=(x_1,x_2,\dots)$ with additional parameters $t=(t_1,t_2,\dots)$. The refined dual stable Grothendieck polynomials are defined as a generating function for reverse plane partitions of a given shape. They interpolate between Schur functions and dual stable Grothendieck polynomials introduced by Lam and Pylyavskyy in 2007. Flagged refined dual stable Grothendieck polynomials are a more refined version of refined dual stable Grothendieck polynomials, where lower and upper bounds are given for the entries of each row or column. In this paper Jacobi--Trudi-type formulas for flagged refined dual stable Grothendieck polynomials are proved using plethystic substitution. This resolves a conjecture of Grinberg and generalizes a result by Iwao and Amanov--Yeliussizov.
Uniform semi-Latin squares and their pairwise-variance aberrations

For integers $n>2$ and $k>0$, an $(n\times n)/k$ semi-Latin square is an $n\times n$ array of $k$-subsets (called blocks) of an $nk$-set (of treatments), such that each treatment occurs once in each row and once in each column of the array. A semi-Latin square is uniform if every pair of blocks, not in the same row or column, intersect in the same positive number of treatments. We show that when a uniform $(n\times n)/k$ semi-Latin square exists, the Schur optimal $(n\times n)/k$ semi-Latin squares are precisely the uniform ones. We then compare uniform semi-Latin squares using the criterion of pairwise-variance (PV) aberration, introduced by J.P. Morgan for affine resolvable designs, and determine the uniform $(n\times n)/k$ semi-Latin squares with minimum PV aberration when there exist $n-1$ mutually orthogonal Latin squares (MOLS) of order $n$. These do not exist when $n=6$, and the smallest uniform semi-Latin squares in this case have size $(6\times 6)/10$. We present a complete classification of the uniform $(6\times 6)/10$ semi-Latin squares, and display the one with least PV aberration. We give a construction producing a uniform $((n+1)\times (n+1))/((n-2)n)$ semi-Latin square when there exist $n-1$ MOLS of order $n$, and determine the PV aberration of such a uniform semi-Latin square. Finally, we describe how certain affine resolvable designs and balanced incomplete-block designs (BIBDs) can be constructed from uniform semi-Latin squares. From the uniform $(6\times 6)/10$ semi-Latin squares we classified, we obtain (up to block design isomorphism) exactly 16875 affine resolvable designs for 72 treatments in 36 blocks of size 12 and 8615 BIBDs for 36 treatments in 84 blocks of size 6. In particular, this shows that there are at least 16875 pairwise non-isomorphic orthogonal arrays $\mathrm{OA}(72,6,6,2)$.

The skew Schubert polynomials are those which are indexed by skew elements of the Weyl group, in the sense of arXiv:0812.0639. We obtain tableau formulas for the double versions of these polynomials in all four classical Lie types, where the tableaux used are fillings of the associated skew Young diagram. These are the first such theorems for symplectic and orthogonal Schubert polynomials, even in the single case. We also deduce tableau formulas for double Schur, double theta, and double eta polynomials, in their specializations as double Grassmannian Schubert polynomials. The latter results generalize the tableau formulas for symmetric (and single) Schubert polynomials due to Littlewood (in type A) and the author (in types B, C, and D).
The projective cover of tableau-cyclic indecomposable $H_n(0)$-modules

Let $α$ be a composition of $n$ and $σ$ a permutation in $\mathfrak{S}_{\ell(α)}$. This paper concerns the projective covers of $H_n(0)$-modules $\mathcal{V}_α$, $X_α$ and $\mathbf{S}^σ_α$, which categorify the dual immaculate quasisymmetric function, the extended Schur function, and the quasisymmetric Schur function when $σ$ is the identity, respectively. First, we show that the projective cover of $\mathcal{V}_α$ is the projective indecomposable module $\mathbf{P}_α$ due to Norton, and $X_α$ and the $φ$-twist of the canonical submodule $\mathbf{S}^σ_{β,C}$ of $\mathbf{S}^σ_β$ for $(β,σ)$'s satisfying suitable conditions appear as $H_n(0)$-homomorphic images of $\mathcal{V}_α$. Second, we introduce a combinatorial model for the $φ$-twist of $\mathbf{S}^σ_α$ and derive a series of surjections starting from $\mathbf{P}_α$ to the $φ$-twist of $\mathbf{S}^{\mathrm{id}}_{α,C}$. Finally, we construct the projective cover of every indecomposable direct summand $\mathbf{S}^σ_{α, E}$ of $\mathbf{S}^σ_α$. As a byproduct, we give a characterization of triples $(σ, α, E)$ such that the projective cover of $\mathbf{S}^σ_{α, E}$ is indecomposable.
Refined Cauchy identity for spin Hall-Littlewood symmetric rational functions

Fully inhomogeneous spin Hall-Littlewood symmetric rational functions $\mathsf{F}_λ$ arise in the context of $\mathfrak{sl}(2)$ higher spin six vertex models, and are multiparameter deformations of the classical Hall-Littlewood symmetric polynomials. We obtain a refined Cauchy identity expressing a weighted sum of the product of two $\mathsf{F}_λ$'s as a determinant. The determinant is of Izergin-Korepin type: it is the partition function of the six vertex model with suitably decorated domain wall boundary conditions. The proof of equality of two partition functions is based on the Yang-Baxter equation.
We rewrite our Izergin-Korepin type determinant in a different form which includes one of the sets of variables in a completely symmetric way. This determinantal identity might be of independent interest, and also allows to directly link the spin Hall-Littlewood rational functions with (the Hall-Littlewood particular case of) the interpolation Macdonald polynomials. In a different direction, a Schur expansion of our Izergin-Korepin type determinant yields a deformation of Schur symmetric polynomials.
In the spin-$\frac12$ specialization, our refined Cauchy identity leads to a summation identity for eigenfunctions of the ASEP (Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process), a celebrated stochastic interacting particle system in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class. This produces explicit integral formulas for certain multitime probabilities in ASEP.
Factorial supersymmetric skew Schur functions and ninth variation determinantal identities

The determinantal identities of Hamel and Goulden have recently been shown to apply to a tableau-based ninth variation of skew Schur functions. Here we extend this approach and its results to the analogous tableau-based ninth variation of supersymmetric skew Schur functions. These tableaux are built on entries taken from an alphabet of unprimed and primed numbers and that may be ordered in a myriad of different ways, each leading to a determinantal identity. At the level of the ninth variation the corresponding determinantal identities are all distinct but the original notion of supersymmetry is lost. It is shown that this can be remedied at the level of the sixth variation involving a doubly infinite sequence of factorial parameters. Moreover it is shown that the resulting factorial supersymmetric skew Schur functions are independent of the ordering of the unprimed and primed entries in the alphabet.

Catalan functions, the graded Euler characteristics of certain vector bundles on the flag variety, are a rich class of symmetric functions which include $k$-Schur functions and parabolic Hall-Littlewood polynomials. We prove that Catalan functions indexed by partition weight are the characters of $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_\ell)$-generalized Demazure crystals as studied by Lakshmibai-Littelmann-Magyar and Naoi. We obtain Schur positive formulas for these functions, settling conjectures of Chen-Haiman and Shimozono-Weyman. Our approach more generally gives key positive formulas for graded Euler characteristics of certain vector bundles on Schubert varieties by matching them to characters of generalized Demazure crystals.

Symplectic $Q$-functions are a symplectic analogue of Schur $Q$-functions and defined as the $t=-1$ specialization of Hall--Littlewood functions associated with the root system of type $C$. In this paper we prove that symplectic $Q$-functions share many of the properties of Schur $Q$-functions, such as a tableau description and a Pieri-type rule. And we present some positivity conjectures, including the positivity conjecture of structure constants for symplectic $P$-functions. We conclude by giving a tableau description of factorial symplectic $Q$-functions.

The reflection representation in the homology of subword order

We investigate the homology representation of the symmetric group on rank-selected subposets of subword order.
We show that the homology module for words of bounded length, over an alphabet of size $n,$
decomposes into a sum of tensor powers of the $S_n$-irreducible $S_{(n-1,1)}$ indexed by the partition $(n-1,1),$ recovering, as a special case, a theorem of Björner and Stanley for words of length at most $k.$ For arbitrary ranks we show that the homology is an integer combination of positive tensor powers of the reflection representation $S_{(n-1,1)}$, and conjecture that this combination is nonnegative. We uncover a curious duality in homology in the case when one rank is deleted.
We prove that the action on the rank-selected chains of subword order is a nonnegative integer combination of tensor powers of $S_{(n-1,1)}$, and show that its Frobenius characteristic is $h$-positive and supported on the set $T_{1}(n)=\{h_λ: λ=(n-r, 1^r), r\ge 1\}.$
Our most definitive result describes the Frobenius characteristic of the homology for an arbitrary set of ranks, plus or minus one copy of the Schur function $s_{(n-1,1)},$ as an integer combination of the set
$T_{2}(n)=\{h_λ: λ=(n-r, 1^r), r\ge 2\}.$ We conjecture that this combination is nonnegative, establishing this fact for particular cases.
