We consider the Ehrhart polynomial of hypersimplices. It is proved that these polynomials have positive coefficients and we give a combinatorial formula for each of them. This settles a problem posed by Stanley and also proves that uniform matroids are Ehrhart positive, an important and yet unsolved particular case of a conjecture posed by De Loera et al. To this end, we introduce a new family of numbers that we call weighted Lah numbers and study some of their properties.

We introduce and study affine analogues of the fixed-point-free (FPF) involution Stanley symmetric functions of Hamaker, Marberg, and Pawlowski. Our methods use the theory of quasiparabolic sets introduced by Rains and Vazirani, and we prove that the subset of FPF-involutions is a quasiparabolic set for the affine symmetric group under conjugation. Using properties of quasiparabolic sets, we prove a transition formula for the affine FPF involution Stanley symmetric functions, analogous to Lascoux and Schützenberger's transition formula for Schubert polynomials. Our results suggest several conjectures and open problems.
Acyclic orientation polynomials and the sink theorem for chromatic symmetric functions

We define the acyclic orientation polynomial of a graph to be the generating function for the sinks of its acyclic orientations. Stanley proved that the number of acyclic orientations is equal to the chromatic polynomial evaluated at $-1$ up to sign. Motivated by this link between acyclic orientations and the chromatic polynomial, we develop "acyclic orientation" analogues of theorems concerning the chromatic polynomial of Birkhoff, Whitney, and Greene-Zaslavsky. As an application, we provide a new proof for Stanley's sink theorem for chromatic symmetric functions $X_G$. This theorem gives a relation between the number of acyclic orientations with a fixed number of sinks and the coefficients in the expansion of $X_G$ with respect to elementary symmetric functions.

In this paper, we present a new connection between representation theory of noncommutative hypersurfaces and combinatorics. Let $S$ be a graded ($\pm 1$)-skew polynomial algebra in $n$ variables of degree $1$ and $f =x_1^2 + \cdots +x_n^2 \in S$. We prove that the stable category $\mathsf{\underline{CM}}^{\mathbb Z}(S/(f))$ of graded maximal Cohen--Macaulay module over $S/(f)$ can be completely computed using the four graphical operations. As a consequence, $\mathsf{\underline{CM}}^{\mathbb Z}(S/(f))$ is equivalent to the derived category $\mathsf{D^b}(\operatorname{\mathsf{mod}} k^{2^r})$, and this $r$ is obtained as the nullity of a certain matrix over ${\mathbb F}_2$. Using the properties of Stanley--Reisner ideals, we also show that the number of irreducible components of the point scheme of $S$ that are isomorphic to ${\mathbb P}^1$ is less than or equal to $\binom{r+1}{2}$.
A Fuss-Catalan variation of the caracol flow polytope
Recently, a combinatorial interpretation of Baldoni and Vergne's generalized Lidskii formula for the volume of a flow polytope was developed by Benedetti et al.. This converts the problem of computing Kostant partition functions into a problem of enumerating a set of objects called unified diagrams. We devise an enhanced version of this combinatorial model to compute the volumes of flow polytopes defined on a family of graphs called the k-caracol graphs, resulting in the first application of the model to non-planar graphs. At k=1 and k=n-1, we recover results for the classical caracol graph and the Pitman--Stanley graph. Furthermore, we introduce the notion of in-degree gravity diagrams for flow polytopes, which are equinumerous with (out-degree) gravity diagrams considered by Benedetti et al.. We show that for the k-caracol flow polytopes, these two kinds of gravity diagrams satisfy a natural combinatorial correspondence, which raises an intriguing question on the relationship in the geometry of two related polytopes.

In symmetric groups, studies of permutation factorizations or triples of permutations satisfying certain conditions have a long history. One particular interesting case is when two of the involved permutations are long cycles, for which many surprisingly simple formulas have been obtained. Here we combinatorially enumerate the pairs of long cycles whose product has a given cycle-type and separates certain elements, extending several lines of studies, and we obtain general quantitative relations. As consequences, in a unified way, we recover a number of results expecting simple combinatorial proofs, including results of Boccara (1980), Zagier (1995), Stanley (2011), Féray and Vassilieva (2012), as well as Hultman (2014). We obtain a number of new results as well. In particular, for the first time, given a partition of a set, we obtain an explicit formula for the number of pairs of long cycles on the set such that the product of the long cycles does not mix the elements from distinct blocks of the partition and has an independently prescribed number of cycles for each block of elements. As applications, we obtain new explicit formulas concerning factorizations of any even permutation into long cycles and the first nontrivial explicit formula for computing strong separation probabilities solving an open problem of Stanley (2010).

In this paper, we enumerate the pairs of permutations that are long cycles and whose product has a given cycle-type. Our main result is a simple relation concerning the desired numbers for a few related cycle-types. The relation refines a formula of the number of pairs of long cycles whose product has $k$ cycles independently obtained by Zagier and Stanley relying on group characters, and was previously obtained by Féray and Vassilieva by counting some colored permutations first and then relying on some algebraic computations in the ring of symmetric functions. Our approach here is simpler and combinatorial.
Separation probabilities and analogues of a Zagier-Stanley formula
In this paper, we first obtain some analogues of a formula of Zagier (1995) and Stanley (2011). For instance, we prove that the number of pairs of $n$-cycles whose product has $k$ cycles and has $m$ given elements contained in distinct cycles (or separated) is given by $$ \frac{2 (n-1)! C_m(n+1,k)}{(n+m)(n+1-m)} $$ when $n-k$ is even, where $C_m(n,k)$ is the number of permutations of $n$ elements having $k$ cycles and separating $m$ given elements. As consequences, we obtain the formulas for certain separation probabilities due to Du and Stanley, answering a call of Stanley for simple combinatorial proofs. Furthermore, we obtain the expectation and variance of the number of fixed points in the product of two random $n$-cycles.
Chromatic Posets

In 1995 Stanley introduced the chromatic symmetric function $X_G$ of a graph $G$, whose $e$-positivity and Schur-positivity has been of large interest. In this paper we study the relative $e$-positivity and Schur-positivity between connected graphs on $n$ vertices. We define and investigate two families of posets on distinct chromatic symmetric functions. The relations depend on the $e$-positivity or Schur-positivity of a weighed subtraction between $X_G$ and $X_H$. We find a biconditional condition between $e$-positivity or Schur-positivity and the relation to the complete graph. This gives a new paradigm for $e$-positivity and for Schur-positivity. We show many other interesting properties of these posets including that trees form an independent set and are maximal elements. Additionally, we find that stars are independent elements, the independence number increases as we increase in the poset and that the family of lollipop graphs form a chain.

Motivated by connections to intersection homology of toric morphisms, the motivic monodromy conjecture, and a question of Stanley, we study the structure of triangulations of simplices whose local h-polynomial vanishes. As a first step, we identify a class of refinements that preserve the local h-polynomial. In dimensions 2 and 3, we show that all triangulations with vanishing local h-polynomial are obtained from one or two simple examples by a sequence of such refinements. In higher dimensions, we prove some partial results and give further examples.

We extend several $g$-type theorems for connected, orientable homology manifolds without boundary to manifolds with boundary. As applications of these results we obtain Kühnel-type bounds on the Betti numbers as well as on certain weighted sums of Betti numbers of manifolds with boundary. Our main tool is the completion $\hatΔ$ of a manifold with boundary $Δ$; it is obtained from $Δ$ by coning off the boundary of $Δ$ with a single new vertex. We show that despite the fact that $\hatΔ$ has a singular vertex, its Stanley--Reisner ring shares a few properties with the Stanley--Reisner rings of homology spheres. We close with a discussion of a connection between three lower bound theorems for manifolds, PL-handle decompositions, and surgery.

Let $G=(V,E)$ be a simple graph with $V=\{1,2,\cdots,n\}$ and $χ(G,x)$ be its chromatic polynomial. For an ordering $π=(v_1,v_2,\cdots,v_n)$ of elements of $V$, let $δ_G(π)$ be the number of $i$'s, where $1\le i\le n-1$, with either $v_i<v_{i+1}$ or $v_iv_{i+1}\in E$. Let ${\cal W}(G)$ be the set of subsets $\{a,b,c\}$ of $V$, where $a<b<c$, which induces a subgraph with $ac$ as its only edge. We show that ${\cal W}(G)=\emptyset$ if and only if $(-1)^nχ(G,-x)=\sum_π {x+δ_G(π)\choose n}$, where the sum runs over all $n!$ orderings $π$ of $V$. To prove this result, we establish an analogous result on order polynomials of posets and apply Stanley's work on the relation between chromatic polynomials and order polynomials.
Maximizing the Edelman-Greene statistic

The $\textit{Edelman-Greene statistic}$ of S. Billey-B. Pawlowski measures the "shortness" of the Schur expansion of a Stanley symmetric function. We show that the maximum value of this statistic on permutations of Coxeter length $n$ is the number of involutions in the symmetric group $S_n$, and explicitly describe the permutations that attain this maximum. Our proof confirms a recent conjecture of C. Monical, B. Pankow, and A. Yong: we give an explicit combinatorial injection between a certain collections of Edelman-Greene tableaux and standard Young tableaux.

Let $\mathfrak g$ be a Borcherds algebra with the associated graph $G$. We prove that the chromatic symmetric function of $G$ can be recovered from the Weyl denominator identity of $\mathfrak g$ and this gives a Lie theoretic proof of Stanley's expression for chromatic symmetric function in terms of power sum symmetric function. Also, this gives an expression for chromatic symmetric function of $G$ in terms of root multiplicities of $\lie g$. The absolute value of the linear coefficient of the chromatic polynomial of $G$ is known as the chromatic discriminant of $G$. As an application of our main theorem, we prove that graphs with different chromatic discriminants are distinguished by their chromatic symmetric functions. Also, we find a connection between the Weyl denominators and the $G$-elementary symmetric functions. Using this connection, we give a Lie theoretic proof of non-negativity of coefficients of $G$-power sum symmetric functions.

In this article, we study freeness of hyperplane arrangements. One of the most investigated arrangement is a graphic arrangement. Stanley proved that a graphic arrangement is free if and only if the corresponding graph is chordal and Dirac showed that a graph is chordal if and only if the graph is obtained by "gluing" complete graphs. We will generalize Dirac's construction to simple matroids with modular joins introduced by Ziegler and show that every arrangement whose associated matroid is constructed in the manner mentioned above is divisionally free. Moreover, we apply the result to arrangements associated with gain graphs and arrangements over finite fields.

Given an infinite field $\mathbb{k}$ and a simplicial complex $Δ$, a common theme in studying the $f$- and $h$-vectors of $Δ$ has been the consideration of the Hilbert series of the Stanley--Reisner ring $\mathbb{k}[Δ]$ modulo a generic linear system of parameters $Θ$. Historically, these computations have been restricted to special classes of complexes (most typically triangulations of spheres or manifolds). We provide a compact topological expression of $h_{d-1}^\mathfrak{a}(Δ)$, the dimension over $\mathbb{k}$ in degree $d-1$ of $\mathbb{k}[Δ]/(Θ)$, for any complex $Δ$ of dimension $d-1$. In the process, we provide tools and techniques for the possible extension to other coefficients in the Hilbert series.
Trees, Parking Functions and Factorizations of Full Cycles

Parking functions of length $n$ are well known to be in correspondence with both labelled trees on $n+1$ vertices and factorizations of the full cycle $σ_n=(0\,1\,\cdots\,n)$ into $n$ transpositions. In fact, these correspondences can be refined: Kreweras equated the area enumerator of parking functions with the inversion enumerator of labelled trees, while an elegant bijection of Stanley maps the area of parking functions to a natural statistic on factorizations of $σ_n$. We extend these relationships in two principal ways. First, we introduce a bivariate refinement of the inversion enumerator of trees and show that it matches a similarly refined enumerator for factorizations. Secondly, we characterize all full cycles $σ$ such that Stanley's function remains a bijection when the canonical cycle $σ_n$ is replaced by $σ$. We also exhibit a connection between our refined inversion enumerator and Haglund's bounce statistic on parking functions.
Limit Shape of Subpartition Maximizing Partitions

This is an expository note answering a question posed to us by Richard Stanley, in which we prove a limit shape theorem for partitions of $n$ which maximize the number of subpartitions. The limit shape and the growth rate of the number of subpartitions are explicit. The key ideas are to use large deviations estimates for random walks, together with convex analysis and the Hardy-Ramanujan asymptotics. Our limit shape coincides with Vershik's limit shape for uniform random partitions.
Generalized chromatic polynomials of graphs from Heaps of pieces

Let $G$ be a simple graph and let $\mathcal{L}(G)$ be the free partially commutative Lie algebra associated to $G$. In this paper, using heaps of pieces, we prove an expression for the generalized $\textbf k$-chromatic polynomial of $G$ in terms of dimensions of the grade spaces of $\mathcal{L}(G)$. This will give us a new interpretation for the chromatic polynomials in terms of multilinear heaps and Lyndon length. The classical results of Stanley, and Greene and Zaslavsky regarding the acyclic orientations of $G$ are obtained as corollaries. A heap with a unique minimal piece is said to be a pyramid and our main theorem is proved using the properties of pyramids. For this reason, we prove two important properties of pyramids namely the pyramid proportionality lemma, and the pyramid and Lyndon heap lemma. In the last section, we will introduce the $(m,λ)$-labelling on acyclic orientations which is similar to Stanley's $λ$-compatible pairs. As an application of our main theorem, using this $(m,λ)$-labelled acyclic orientations, we will prove the reciprocity theorem for the derivatives of the chromatic polynomials.

In 1995, Jockusch constructed an infinite family of centrally symmetric $3$-dimensional simplicial spheres that are cs-$2$-neighborly. Here we generalize his construction and show that for all $d\geq 3$ and $n\geq d+1$, there exists a centrally symmetric $d$-dimensional simplicial sphere with $2n$ vertices that is cs-$\lceil d/2\rceil$-neighborly. This result combined with work of Adin and Stanley completely resolves the upper bound problem for centrally symmetric simplicial spheres.
