On the coproduct in affine Schubert calculus
Published • View PublicationBIB
The cohomology of the affine flag variety of a complex reductive group is a comodule over the cohomology of the affine Grassmannian. We give positive formulae for the coproduct of an affine Schubert class in terms of affine Stanley classes and finite Schubert classes, in (torus-equivariant) cohomology and K-theory. As an application, we deduce monomial positivity for the affine Schubert polynomials of the second author.

Bijective proofs of shuffle compatibility results
Published • View PublicationBIB
Define a permutation to be any sequence of distinct positive integers. Given two permutations p and s on disjoint underlying sets, we denote by p sh s the set of shuffles of p and s (the set of all permutations obtained by interleaving the two permutations). A permutation statistic is a function St whose domain is the set of permutations such that St(p) only depends on the relative order of the elements of p. A permutation statistic is shuffle compatible if the distribution of St on p sh s depends only on St(p) and St(s) and their lengths rather than on the individual permutations themselves. This notion is implicit in the work of Stanley in his theory of P-partitions. The definition was explicitly given by Gessel and Zhuang who proved that various permutation statistics were shuffle compatible using mainly algebraic means. This work was continued by Grinberg. The purpose of the present article is to use bijective techniques to give demonstrations of shuffle compatibility. In particular, we show how a large number of permutation statistics can be shown to be shuffle compatible using a few simple bijections. Our approach also leads to a method for constructing such bijective proofs rather than having to treat each one in an ad hoc manner. Finally, we are able to prove a conjecture of Gessel and Zhuang about the shuffle compatibility of a certain statistic.

Multivariate polynomials for generalized permutohedra
Published • View PublicationBIB
Using the notion of Mahonian statistic on acyclic posets, we introduce a $q$-analogue of the $h$-polynomial of a simple generalized permutohedron. We focus primarily on the case of nestohedra and on explicit computations for many interesting examples, such as $S_n$-invariant nestohedra, graph associahedra, and Stanley--Pitman polytopes. For the usual (Stasheff) associahedron, our generalization yields an alternative $q$-analogue to the well-studied Narayana numbers.

A Shuffling Theorem for Centrally Symmetric Tilings
Published • View PublicationBIB
Rohatgi and the author recently proved a shuffling theorem for lozenge tilings of `doubly-dented hexagons' (arXiv:1905.08311). The theorem can be considered as a hybrid between two classical theorems in the enumeration of tilings: MacMahon's theorem about centrally symmetric hexagons and Cohn-Larsen-Prop's theorem about semihexagons with dents. In this paper, we consider a similar shuffling theorem for the centrally symmetric tilings of the doubly-dented hexagons. Our theorem also implies a conjecture posed by the author in arXiv:1803.02792 about the enumeration of centrally symmetric tilings of hexagons with three arrays of triangular holes. This enumeration, in turn, can be considered as a common generalization of (a tiling-equivalent version of) Stanley's enumeration of self-complementary plane partitions and Ciucu's work on symmetries of the shamrock structure. Moreover, our enumeration also confirms a recent conjecture posed by Ciucu in arXiv:1906.02951.

On the Stanley depth of powers of monomial ideals
Let $\mathbb{K}$ be a field and $S=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over $\mathbb{K}$. In 1982, R. Stanley associated a combinatorial invariant to any finitely generated $\mathbb{Z}^n$-graded $S$-module which is now called Stanley depth. Stanley conjectured that this invariant is an upper bound for the depth of module. Stanley's conjecture has been disproved by Duval et al. \cite{abcj}, and the counterexample is a quotient of squarefree monomial ideals. On the other hand, there are evidences showing that Stanley's inequality can be true for high powers of monomial ideals. In this survey article, we collect the recent results in this direction. More precisely, we investigate the Stanley depth of powers, integral closure of powers and symbolic powers of monomial ideals.

A survey of recent developments on Hessenberg varieties
This article surveys recent developments on Hessenberg varieties, emphasizing some of the rich connections of their cohomology and combinatorics. In particular, we will see how hyperplane arrangements, representations of symmetric groups, and Stanley's chromatic symmetric functions are related to the cohomology rings of Hessenberg varieties. We also include several other topics on Hessenberg varieties to cover recent developments.

Chromatic symmetric functions in noncommuting variables revisited
In 1995 Stanley introduced a generalization of the chromatic polynomial of a graph $G$, called the chromatic symmetric function, $X_G$, which was generalized to noncommuting variables, $Y_G$, by Gebhard-Sagan in 2001. Recently there has been a renaissance in the study of $X_G$, in particular in classifying when $X_G$ is a positive linear combination of elementary symmetric or Schur functions. We extend this study from $X_G$ to $Y_G$, including establishing the multiplicativity of $Y_G$, and showing $Y_G$ satisfies the $k$-deletion property. Moreover, we completely classify when $Y_G$ is a positive linear combination of elementary symmetric functions in noncommuting variables, and similarly for Schur functions in noncommuting variables, in the sense of Bergeron-Hohlweg-Rosas-Zabrocki. We further establish the natural multiplicative generalization of the fundamental theorem of symmetric functions, now in noncommuting variables, and obtain numerous new bases for this algebra whose generators are chromatic symmetric functions in noncommuting variables. Finally, we show that of all known symmetric functions in noncommuting variables, only all elementary and specified Schur ones can be realized as $Y_G$ for some $G$.

Generalized threshold arrangements
An arrangement of hyperplanes is a finite collection of hyperplanes in a real Euclidean space. To such a collection one associates the characteristic polynomial that encodes the combinatorics of intersections of the hyperplanes. Finding the characteristic polynomial of the Shi threshold and the Catalan threshold arrangements was an open problem in Stanley's list of problems in [1]. Seunghyun Seo solved both the problems by clever arguments using the finite field method in [3,4]. However, in his paper, he left open the problem of computing the characteristic polynomial of a broader class of threshold arrangements, the so-called "generalized threshold" arrangements whose defining set of hyperplanes is given by $x_i + x_j = -l,-l+1,...,m-1,m$ for $1 \le i < j \le n$ where $l,m \in \mathbb{N}$. In this paper, we present a method for computing the characteristic polynomial of this family of arrangements.

A corollary of Stanley's Hook Content Formula
We use the hook lengths of a partition to define two rectangular tableaux. We prove these tableaux have equal multisets of entries, first by elementary combinatorial arguments, and then using Stanley's Hook Content Formula and symmetric polynomials.

Flagged $(\mathcal{P},ρ)$-partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the theory of $(\mathcal{P},ρ)$-partitions, depending on a poset $\mathcal{P}$ and a map $ρ$ from $\mathcal{P}$ to positive integers. The generating function $\mathfrak{F}_{\mathcal{P},ρ}$ of $(\mathcal{P},ρ)$-partitions is a polynomial that, when the images of $ρ$ tend to infinity, tends to Stanley's generating function $F_{\mathcal{P}}$ of $\mathcal{P}$-partitions. Analogous to Stanley's fundamental theorem for $\mathcal{P}$-partitions, we show that the set of $(\mathcal{P},ρ)$-partitions decomposes as a disjoint union of $(\mathcal{L},ρ)$-partitions where $\mathcal{L}$ runs over the set of linear extensions of $\mathcal{P}$. In this more general context, the set of all $\mathfrak{F}_{\mathcal{L},ρ}$ for linear orders $\mathcal{L}$ over determines a basis of polynomials. We thus introduce the notion of flagged $(\mathcal{P},ρ)$-partitions, and we prove that the set of all $\mathfrak{F}_{\mathcal{L},ρ}$ for flagged $(\mathcal{L},ρ)$-partitions for linear orders $\mathcal{L}$ is precisely the fundamental slide basis of the polynomial ring, introduced by the first author and Searles. Our main theorem shows that any generating function $\mathfrak{F}_{\mathcal{P},ρ}$ of flagged $(\mathcal{P},ρ)$-partitions is a positive integer linear combination of slide polynomials. As applications, we give a new proof of positivity of the slide product and, motivating our nomenclature, we also prove flagged Schur functions are slide positive.

Combinatorial reciprocity for the chromatic polynomial and the chromatic symmetric function
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let G be a graph, and let $χ$G be its chromatic polynomial. For any non-negative integers i, j, we give an interpretation for the evaluation $χ$ (i) G (--j) in terms of acyclic orientations. This recovers the classical interpretations due to Stanley and to Green and Zaslavsky respectively in the cases i = 0 and j = 0. We also give symmetric function refinements of our interpretations, and some extensions. The proofs use heap theory in the spirit of a 1999 paper of Gessel.

Slow Fibonacci Walks
For a positive integer $n$, we study the number of steps to reach $n$ by a {\it Fibonacci walk} for some starting pair $a_1$ and $a_2$ satisfying the recurrence of $a_{k+2}=a_{k+1}+a_k$. The problem of slow Fibonacci walks, first suggested by Richard Stanley, is to determine the maximum number $s(n)$ of steps for such a Fibonacci walk ending at $n$. Stanley conjectured that for most $n$, there is a slow Fibonacci walk reaching $n = a_s$ with the property that $a_{s+1}$ is the integer closest to $φn$ where $φ=(1+\sqrt{5})/2$. We prove that this is true for only a positive fraction of $n$. We give explicit formulas for the choice of the starting pairs and the determination of $s(n)$ by giving a characterization theorem. We also derive a number of density results concerning the distribution of down and up cases (that is, those $n$ with $a_{s+1}=\lfloor φn\rfloor$ or $\lceil φn \rceil$, respectively), as well as for more general `paradoxical' cases.

A generalization of Edelman--Greene insertion for Schubert polynomials
Edelman and Greene generalized the Robinson--Schensted--Knuth correspondence to reduced words in order to give a bijective proof of the Schur positivity of Stanley symmetric functions. Stanley symmetric functions may be regarded as the stable limits of Schubert polynomials, and similarly Schur functions may be regarded as the stable limits of Demazure characters for the general linear group. We modify the Edelman--Greene correspondence to give an analogous, explicit formula for the Demazure character expansion of Schubert polynomials. Our techniques utilize dual equivalence and its polynomial variation, but here we demonstrate how to extract explicit formulas from that machinery which may be applied to other positivity problems as well.

Enriched order polytopes and Enriched Hibi rings
Published in European Journal of Mathematics 7 (2021), 48--68 • View PublicationBIB
Stanley introduced two classes of lattice polytopes associated to posets, which are called the order polytope ${\mathcal O}_P$ and the chain polytope ${\mathcal C}_P$ of a poset $P$. It is known that, given a poset $P$, the Ehrhart polynomials of ${\mathcal O}_P$ and ${\mathcal C}_P$ are equal to the order polynomial of $P$ that counts the $P$-partitions. In this paper, we introduce the enriched order polytope of a poset $P$ and show that it is a reflexive polytope whose Ehrhart polynomial is equal to that of the enriched chain polytope of $P$ and the left enriched order polynomial of $P$ that counts the left enriched $P$-partitions, by using the theory of Gröbner bases. The toric rings of enriched order polytopes are called enriched Hibi rings. It turns out that enriched Hibi rings are normal, Gorenstein, and Koszul. The above result implies the existence of a bijection between the lattice points in the dilations of ${\mathcal O}^{(e)}_P$ and ${\mathcal C}^{(e)}_P$. Towards such a bijection, we give the facet representations of enriched order and chain polytopes.

Universal graph Schubert varieties
We consider the loci of invertible linear maps $f : \mathbb{C}^n \to {(\mathbb{C}^n)}^*$ together with pairs of flags $(E_\bullet, F_\bullet)$ in $\mathbb{C}^n$ such that the various restrictions $f : F_j \to E_i^*$ have specified ranks. Identifying an invertible linear map with its graph viewed as a point in a Grassmannian, we show that the closures of these loci have cohomology classes represented by the back-stable Schubert polynomials of Lam, Lee, and Shimozono. As a special case, we recover the result of Knutson, Lam, and Speyer that Stanley symmetric functions represent the classes of graph Schubert varieties. We consider similar loci where $f$ is restricted to be symmetric or skew-symmetric. Their classes are now given by back-stable versions of the polynomials introduced by Wyser and Yong to represent classes of orbit closures for the orthogonal and symplectic groups acting on the type A flag variety. Using degeneracy locus formulas of Kazarian and of Anderson and Fulton, we obtain new Pfaffian formulas for these polynomials in the vexillary case. We also give a geometric interpretation of the involution Stanley symmetric functions of Hamaker, Marberg, and the author: they represent classes of involution graph Schubert varieties in isotropic Grassmannians.

Chromatic Polynomial and Heaps of Pieces
Stanley in his paper [Stanley, Richard P.: Acyclic orientations of graphs In: Discrete Mathematics 5 (1973), Nr. 2, S. 171-178.] provided interpretations of the chromatic polynomial when it is substituted with negative integers. Greene and Zaslavsky interpreted the coefficients of the chromatic polynomial in [Greene, Curtis ; Zaslavsky, Thomas: On the interpretation of Whitney numbers through arrangements of hyperplanes, zonotopes, non-Radon partitions, and orientations of graphs. In: Transactions of the American Mathematical Society 280 (1983), jan, Nr. 1, S. 97-97.]. We shall develop an involution on factorisations of heaps of pieces and using this involution, we shall provide bijective proofs to results from both the papers.
Bivariate Order Polynomials
Published in Graphs and Combinatorics 36 (2020), 921-931 • Search Publication
Motivated by Dohmen-Pönitz-Tittmann's bivariate chromatic polynomial $χ_G(x,y)$, which counts all $x$-colorings of a graph $G$ such that adjacent vertices get different colors if they are $\le y$, we introduce a bivarate version of Stanley's order polynomial, which counts order preserving maps from a given poset to a chain. Our results include decomposition formulas in terms of linear extensions, a combinatorial reciprocity theorem, and connections to bivariate chromatic polynomials.

Proof of a conjecture of Stanley about Stern's array
Stanley, building on work of Stern, defined an array of numbers by the recurrence $s(n, 2k) = s(n-1, k)$, $s(n, 2k+1) = s(n-1, k) + s(n-1, k+1)$. Stanley showed that, for each positive integer $r$, the sequence $s_n^r:= \sum_k s(n,k)^r$ obeys a homogeneous linear recurrence in $n$ of length $r/2+O(1)$. Numerical evidence, however, suggested that $s_n^r$ obeys shorter recurrences, of length $r/3+O(1)$. We prove Stanley's conjecture.

A Few More Trees the Chromatic Symmetric Function Can Distinguish
Published in Involve 13 (2020) 109-116 • View PublicationBIB
A well-known open problem in graph theory asks whether Stanley's chromatic symmetric function, a generalization of the chromatic polynomial of a graph, distinguishes between any two non-isomorphic trees. Previous work has proven the conjecture for a class of trees called spiders. This paper generalizes the class of spiders to $n$-spiders, where normal spiders correspond to $n = 1$, and verifies the conjecture for $n = 2$.

On enumerators of Smirnov words by descents and cyclic descents
A Smirnov word is a word over the positive integers in which adjacent letters must be different. A symmetric function enumerating these words by descent number arose in the work of Shareshian and the second named author on $q$-Eulerian polynomials, where a $t$-analog of a formula of Carlitz, Scoville, and Vaughan for enumerating Smirnov words is proved. A symmetric function enumerating a circular version of these words by cyclic descent number arose in the work of the first named author on chromatic quasisymmetric functions of directed graphs, where a $t$-analog of a formula of Stanley for enumerating circular Smirnov words is proved. In this paper we obtain new $t$-analogs of the Carlitz-Scoville-Vaughan formula and the Stanley formula in which the roles of descent number and cyclic descent number are switched. These formulas show that the Smirnov word enumerators are polynomials in $t$ whose coefficients are e-positive symmetric functions. We also obtain expansions in the power sum basis and the fundamental quasisymmetric function basis, complementing earlier results of Shareshian and the authors. Our work relies on studying refinements of the Smirnov word enumerators that count certain restricted classes of Smirnov words by descent number. Applications to variations of $q$-Eulerian polynomials and to the chromatic quasisymmetric functions introduced by Shareshian and the second named author are also presented.
