Combinatorial Proof of Selberg's Integral Formula
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we present a combinatorial proof of Selberg's integral formula. We start by giving a bijective proof of a Theorem about the number of topological orders of a certain related directed graph. Selberg's Integral Formula then follows by induction. This solves a problem posed by R. Stanley in 2008. Our proof is based on Andersons analytic proof of the formula. As part of the proof we show a further generalisation of the generalised Vandermonde determinant.
Biconed graphs, weighted forests, and h-vectors of matroid complexes
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 28 Issue 4 (2021), P4.31 • View PublicationBIB
A well-known conjecture of Richard Stanley posits that the $h$-vector of the independence complex of a matroid is a pure ${\mathcal O}$-sequence. The conjecture has been established for various classes but is open for graphic matroids. A biconed graph is a graph with two specified `coning vertices', such that every vertex of the graph is connected to at least one coning vertex. The class of biconed graphs includes coned graphs, Ferrers graphs, and complete multipartite graphs. We study the $h$-vectors of graphic matroids arising from biconed graphs, providing a combinatorial interpretation of their entries in terms of `$2$-weighted forests' of the underlying graph. This generalizes constructions of Kook and Lee who studied the Möbius coinvariant (the last nonzero entry of the $h$-vector) of graphic matroids of complete bipartite graphs. We show that allowing for partially $2$-weighted forests gives rise to a pure multicomplex whose face count recovers the $h$-vector, establishing Stanley's conjecture for this class of matroids. We also discuss how our constructions relate to a combinatorial strengthening of Stanley's Conjecture (due to Klee and Samper) for this class of matroids.

Differential operators on Schur and Schubert polynomials
This paper deals with decreasing operators on back stable Schubert polynomials. We study two operators $ξ$ and $\nabla$ of degree $-1$, which satisfy the Leibniz rule. Furthermore, we show that all other such operators are linear combinations of $ξ$ and $\nabla$. For the case of Schur functions, these two operators fully determine the product of Schur functions, i.e., it is possible to define the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients only from $ξ$ and $\nabla$. This new point of view on Schur functions gives us an elementary proof of the Giambelli identity and of Jacobi-Trudi identities. For the case of Schubert polynomials, we construct a bigger class of decreasing operators as expressions in terms of $ξ$ and $\nabla$, which are indexed by Young diagrams. Surprisingly, these operators are related to Stanley symmetric functions. In particular, we extend bosonic operators from Schur to Schubert polynomials.

Dual matroid polytopes and internal activity of independence complexes
Shelling orders are a ubiquitous tool used to understand invariants of cell complexes. Significant effort has been made to develop techniques to decide when a given complex is shellable. However, empirical evidence shows that some shelling orders are better than others. In this article, we explore this phenomenon in the case of matroid independence complexes. Based on a new relation between shellability of dual matroid polytopes and independence complexes, we outline a systematic way to investigate and compare different shellings orders. We explain how our new tools recast and deepen various classical results to the language of geometry, and suggest new heuristics for addressing two old conjectures due to Simon and Stanley. Furthermore, we present freely available software which can be used to experiment with these new geometric ideas.

The $\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}$-Number of a Simplicial Complex
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $Δ$ be a simplicial complex on $[n]$. The $\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}$-complex of $Δ$ is the simplicial complex $δ_{\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}}(Δ)$ on $[n]$ for which the facet ideal of $Δ$ is equal to the Stanley--Reisner ideal of $δ_{\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}}(Δ)$. Furthermore, for each $k = 2,3,\ldots$\,, we introduce {\em $k^{th}$ $\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}$-complex} $δ^{(k)}_{\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}}(Δ)$ which is inductively defined by $δ^{(k)}_{\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}}(Δ) = δ_{\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}}(δ^{(k-1)}_{\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}}(Δ))$ with setting $δ^{(1)}_{\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}}(Δ) = δ_{\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}}(Δ)$. One can set $δ^{(0)}_{\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}}(Δ) = Δ$. The $\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}$-number of $Δ$ is the smallest integer $k > 0$ for which $δ^{(k)}_{\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}}(Δ) \simeq Δ$. In the present paper we are especially interested in the $\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}$-number of a finite graph, which can be regraded as a simplicial complex of dimension one. It is shown that the $\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}$-number of the finite graph $K_n\coprod K_m$ on $[n + m]$, which is the disjoint union of the complete graphs $K_n$ on $[n]$ and $K_m$ on $[m]$, where $n \geq 2$ and $m \geq 2$ with $(n,m) \neq (2,2)$, is equal to $n + m + 2$. Its corollary says that the $\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}$-number of the complete bipartite graph $K_{n,m}$ on $[n+m]$ is also equal to $n + m + 2$.

Combinatorial Hopf algebras from representations of families of wreath products
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct Hopf algebras whose elements are representations of combinatorial automorphism groups, by generalising a theorem of Zelevinsky on Hopf algebras of representations of wreath products. As an application we attach symmetric functions to representations of graph automorphism groups, generalising and refining Stanley's chromatic symmetric function.

Two enriched poset polytopes
Published in Annals of Combinatorics, 28 (2024), 257--282 • View PublicationBIB
Stanley introduced and studied two lattice polytopes, the order polytope and chain polytope, associated to a finite poset. Recently Ohsugi and Tsuchiya introduce an enriched version of them, called the enriched order polytope and enriched chain polytope. In this paper, we give a piecewise-linear bijection between these enriched poset polytopes, which is an enriched analogue of Stanley's transfer map and bijectively proves that they have the same Ehrhart polynomials. Also we construct explicitly unimodular triangulations of two enriched poset polytopes.

Large Parts of Random Plane Partitions: a Poisson Limit Theorem
We propose an aproach for asymptotic analysis of plane partition statistics related to counts of parts whose sizes exceed a certain suitably chosen level. In our study, we use the concept of conjugate trace of a plane partition of the positive integer $n$, introduced by Stanley in 1973. We derive generating functions and determine the asymptotic behavior of counts of large parts using a general scheme based on the saddle point method. In this way, we are able to prove a Poisson limit theorem for the number of parts of a random and uniformly chosen plane partition of $n$, whose sizes are greater than a function $m=m(n)$ as $n\to\infty$. An explicit expression for $m(n)$ is also given.

The plethystic inverse of the odd Lie representations
Published in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 150 (2022), no. 9, 3787--3798 • View PublicationBIB
The Frobenius characteristic of $Lie_n,$ the representation of the symmetric group $S_n$ afforded by the multilinear component of the free Lie algebra, is known to satisfy many interesting plethystic identities. In this paper we prove a conjecture of Richard Stanley establishing the plethystic inverse of the sum $\sum_{n\geq 0} Lie_{2n+1}$ of the odd Lie characteristics. We obtain an apparently new plethystic decomposition of the regular representation of $S_n$ in terms of irreducibles indexed by hooks, and the Lie representations. We determine the plethystic inverse of the alternating sum of the odd Lie characteristics.

Merged-log-concavity of rational functions, almost strictly unimodal sequences, and phase transitions of ideal boson-fermion gases
We obtain some new results on the unimodal sequences of the real values of rational functions by polynomials with positive integer coefficients. Thus, we introduce the notion of merged-log-concavity of rational functions. Roughly speaking, the notion extends Stanley's $q$-log-concavity of polynomials. We construct explicit merged-log-concave rational functions by $q$-binomial coefficients, Hadamard products, and convolutions, extending the Cauchy-Binet formula. Then, we obtain the unimodal sequences of rational functions by Young diagrams. Moreover, we consider the variation of unimodal sequences by critical points that separate strictly increasing, strictly decreasing, and hill-shape sequences among almost strictly unimodal sequences. Also, the critical points are zeros of polynomials in a suitable setting. The study above extends the $t$-power series of $(\pm t;q)_{\infty}^{\mp 1}$ to some extent by polynomials with positive integer coefficients and the variation of unimodal sequences. We then obtain the golden ratio of quantum dilogarithms ($q$-exponentials) as a critical point. Additionally, we consider eta products, generalized Narayana numbers, and weighted $q$-multinomial coefficients, which we introduce. In statistical mechanics, we discuss the grand canonical partition functions of some ideal boson-fermion gases with or without Casimir energies (Ramanujan summation). The merged-log-concavity gives phase transitions on Helmholtz free energies by critical points of the metallic ratios including the golden ratio. In particular, the phase transitions implies non-zero particle vacua from zero particle vacua as the temperature rises.

A bijective proof of Kohnert's rule for Schubert polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Kohnert proposed the first monomial positive formula for Schubert polynomials as the generating polynomial for certain unit cell diagrams obtained from the Rothe diagram of a permutation. Billey, Jockusch and Stanley gave the first proven formula for Schubert polynomials as the generating polynomial for compatible sequences of reduced words of a permutation. In this paper, we give an explicit bijection between these two models, thereby definitively proving Kohnert's rule for Schubert polynomials.

Three interacting families of Fuss-Catalan posets
Published in Formal Power Series and Algebraic Combinatorics, Séminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire, 84B.22, 2020 • Search Publication
Three families of posets depending on a nonnegative integer parameter $m$ are introduced. The underlying sets of these posets are enumerated by the $m$-Fuss Catalan numbers. Among these, one is a generalization of Stanley lattices and another one is a generalization of Tamari lattices. The three families of posets are related: they fit into a chain for the order extension relation and they share some properties. Two associative algebras are constructed as quotients of generalizations of the Malvenuto-Reutenauer algebra. Their products describe intervals of our analogues of Stanley lattices and Tamari lattices. In particular, one is a generalization of the Loday-Ronco algebra.

Descents on quasi-Stirling permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
Stirling permutations were introduced by Gessel and Stanley, who used their enumeration by the number of descents to give a combinatorial interpretation of certain polynomials related to Stirling numbers. Quasi-Stirling permutations, which can be viewed as labeled noncrossing matchings, were introduced by Archer et al. as a natural extension of Stirling permutations. Janson's correspondence between Stirling permutations and labeled increasing plane trees extends to a bijection between quasi-Stirling permutations and the same set of trees without the increasing restriction. Archer et al. posed the problem of enumerating quasi-Stirling permutations by the number of descents, and conjectured that there are $(n+1)^{n-1}$ such permutations of size $n$ having the maximum number of descents. In this paper we prove their conjecture, and we give the generating function for quasi-Stirling permutations by the number of descents, expressed as a compositional inverse of the generating function of Eulerian polynomials. We also find the analogue for quasi-Stirling permutations of the main result from Gessel and Stanley's paper. We prove that the distribution of descents on these permutations is asymptotically normal, and that the roots of the corresponding quasi-Stirling polynomials are all real, in analogy to Bóna's results for Stirling permutations. Finally, we generalize our results to a one-parameter family of permutations that extends $k$-Stirling permutations, and we refine them by also keeping track of the number of ascents and the number of plateaus.

Cycle type factorizations in $\mathrm{GL}_n \mathbb{F}_q$
Recent work by Huang, Lewis, Morales, Reiner, and Stanton suggests that the regular elliptic elements of $\mathrm{GL}_n \mathbb{F}_q$ are somehow analogous to the $n$-cycles of the symmetric group. In 1981, Stanley enumerated the factorizations of permutations into products of $n$-cycles. We study the analogous problem in $\mathrm{GL}_n \mathbb{F}_q$ of enumerating factorizations into products of regular elliptic elements. More precisely, we define a notion of cycle type for $\mathrm{GL}_n \mathbb{F}_q$ and seek to enumerate the tuples of a fixed number of regular elliptic elements whose product has a given cycle type. In some special cases, we provide explicit formulas, using a standard character-theoretic technique due to Frobenius by introducing simplified formulas for the necessary character values. We also address, for large $q$, the problem of computing the probability that the product of a random tuple of regular elliptic elements has a given cycle type. We conclude with some results about the polynomiality of our enumerative formulas and some open problems.

A birational lifting of the Stanley-Thomas word on products of two chains
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 23 no. 1, Combinatorics (August 18, 2021) dmtcs:6633 • View PublicationBIB
The dynamics of certain combinatorial actions and their liftings to actions at the piecewise-linear and birational level have been studied lately with an eye towards questions of periodicity, orbit structure, and invariants. One key property enjoyed by the rowmotion operator on certain finite partially-ordered sets is homomesy, where the average value of a statistic is the same for all orbits. To prove refined versions of homomesy in the product of two chain posets, J. Propp and the second author used an equivariant bijection discovered (less formally) by R. Stanley and H. Thomas. We explore the lifting of this "Stanley--Thomas word" to the piecewise-linear, birational, and noncommutative realms. Although the map is no longer a bijection, so cannot be used to prove periodicity directly, it still gives enough information to prove the homomesy at the piecewise-linear and birational levels (a result previously shown by D. Grinberg, S. Hopkins, and S. Okada). Even at the noncommutative level, the Stanley--Thomas word of a poset labeling rotates cyclically with the lifting of antichain rowmotion. Along the way we give some formulas for noncommutative antichain rowmotion that we hope will be first steps towards proving the conjectured periodicity at this level.

Non-Schur-positivity of chromatic symmetric functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We provide a formula for every Schur coefficient in the chromatic symmetric function of a graph in terms of special rim hook tabloids. This formula is useful in confirming the non-Schur positivity of the chromatic symmetric function of a graph, especially when Stanley's stable partition method does not work. As applications, we determine Schur positive fan graphs and Schur positive complete tripartite graphs. We show that any squid graph obtained by adding $n$ leaves to a common vertex on an $m$-vertex cycle is not Schur positive if $m\ne 2n-1$, and conjecture that neither are the squid graphs with $m=2n-1$.

The $e$-positivity of two families of $(claw, 2K_2)$-free graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by Stanley's conjecture about the $e$-positivity of claw-free incomparability graphs, Hamel and her collaborators studied the $e$-positivity of $(claw, H)$-free graphs, where $H$ is a four-vertex graph. In this paper we establish the $e$-positivity of generalized pyramid graphs and $2K_2$-free unit interval graphs, which are two important families of $(claw, 2K_2)$-free graphs. Hence we affirmatively solve one problem proposed by Hamel, Hoàng and Tuero, and another problem considered by Foley, Hoàng and Merkel.

A positivity conjecture on the structure constants of shifted Jack functions

We consider Jack polynomials $J_λ$ and their shifted analogue $J^#_λ$. In 1989, Stanley conjectured that $\langle J_μJ_ν, J_λ\rangle$ is a polynomial with nonnegative coefficients in the parameter $α$. In this note, we extend this conjecture to the case of shifted Jack polynomials.

On piecewise-linear homeomorphisms between distributive and anti-blocking polyhedra
Published • View PublicationBIB
Stanley (1986) introduced the order polytope and chain polytope of a partially ordered set and showed that they are related by a piecewise-linear homeomorphism. In this paper we view order and chain polytopes as instances of distributive and anti-blocking polytopes, respectively. Both these classes of polytopes are defined in terms of the componentwise partial order on $\mathbb R^n$. We generalize Stanley's PL-homeomorphism to a large class of distributive polyhedra using infinite walks in marked networks.
