From $q$-Stirling numbers to the Delta Conjecture: a viewpoint from vincular patterns
Published • View PublicationBIB
The distribution of certain Mahonian statistic (called $\mathrm{BAST}$) introduced by Babson and Steingrímsson over the set of permutations that avoid vincular pattern $1\underline{32}$, is shown bijectively to match the distribution of major index over the same set. This new layer of equidistribution is then applied to give alternative interpretations of two related $q$-Stirling numbers of the second kind, studied by Carlitz and Gould. Moreover, extensions to an Euler-Mahonian statistic over ordered set partitions, and to statistics over ordered multiset partitions present themselves naturally. The latter of which is shown to be related to the recently proven Delta Conjecture. During the course, a refined relation between $\mathrm{BAST}$ and its reverse complement $\mathrm{STAT}$ is derived as well.

A Set of Conjectured Identities for Stirling Numbers of the First Kind
Given an integer g, g > 1, an integer w, -1 < w <g - 1, and a set of g distinct numbers, c_1, ..., c_g, we present a conjectured identity for Stirling numbers of the first kind. We have proven all the equalities in case g < 7; and for the case g = 7, provided w < 4. These expressions arise from an aspect of the study of the dimer-monomer problem on regular graphs.
Analogies of the Qi formula for some Dowling type numbers
In the paper, the authors establish explicit formulas for the Dowling numbers and their generalizations in terms of generalizations of the Lah numbers and the Stirling numbers of the second kind. These results gen- eralize the Qi formula for the Bell numbers in terms of the Lah numbers and the Stirling numbers of the second kind.

Total non-negativity of some combinatorial matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
Many combinatorial matrices --- such as those of binomial coefficients, Stirling numbers of both kinds, and Lah numbers --- are known to be totally non-negative, meaning that all minors (determinants of square submatrices) are non-negative. The examples noted above can be placed in a common framework: for each one there is a non-decreasing sequence $(a_1, a_2, \ldots)$, and a sequence $(e_1, e_2, \ldots)$, such that the $(m,k)$-entry of the matrix is the coefficient of the polynomial $(x-a_1)\cdots(x-a_k)$ in the expansion of $(x-e_1)\cdots(x-e_m)$ as a linear combination of the polynomials $1, x-a_1, \ldots, (x-a_1)\cdots(x-a_m)$. We consider this general framework. For a non-decreasing sequence $(a_1, a_2, \ldots)$ we establish necessary and sufficient conditions on the sequence $(e_1, e_2, \ldots)$ for the corresponding matrix to be totally non-negative. As corollaries we obtain totally non-negativity of matrices of rook numbers of Ferrers boards, and of graph Stirling numbers of chordal graphs.
A Geometric Interpretation of the Intertwining Number
Published • View PublicationBIB
We exhibit a connection between two statistics on set partitions, the intertwining number and the depth-index. In particular, results link the intertwining number to the algebraic geometry of Borel orbits. Furthermore, by studying the generating polynomials of our statistics, we determine the $q=-1$ specialization of a $q$-analogue of the Bell numbers. Finally, by using Renner's $H$-polynomial of an algebraic monoid, we introduce and study a $t$-analog of $q$-Stirling numbers.

On the Schur expansion of Jack polynomials
Published in Séminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire, 80B, No. 90, (2018) • Search Publication
We present positivity conjectures for the Schur expansion of Jack symmetric functions in two bases given by binomial coefficients. Partial results suggest that there are rich combinatorics to be found in these bases, including Eulerian numbers, Stirling numbers, quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux, and rook boards. These results also lead to further conjectures about the fundamental quasisymmetric expansions of these bases, which we prove for special cases.

The $1/k$-Eulerian Polynomials as Moments, via Exponential Riordan Arrays
Using the theory of exponential Riordan arrays, we show that the $1/k$-Eulerian polynomials are moments for a paramaterized family of orthogonal polynomials. In addition, we show that the related Savage-Viswanathan polynomials are also moments for appropriate families of orthogonal polynomials. We provide continued fraction ordinary generating functions and Hankel transforms for these moments, as well as the three-term recurrences for the corresponding orthogonal polynomials. We provide formulas for the $1/k$-Eulerian polynomials and the Savage-Viswanathan polynomials involving the Stirling numbers of the first and the second kind. Finally we show that the once-shifted polynomials are again moment sequences.

Generalized Stirling Numbers I
We consider generalized Stirling numbers of the second kind $% S_{a,b,r}^{α_{s},β_{s},r_{s},p_{s}}\left( p,k\right) $, $% k=0,1,\ldots .rp+\sum_{s=2}^{L}r_{s}p_{s}$, where $a,b,α_{s},β_{s} $ are complex numbers, and $r,p,r_{s},p_{s}$ are non-negative integers given, $s=2,\ldots ,L$. (The case $a=1,b=0,r=1,r_{s}p_{s}=0$, corresponds to the standard Stirling numbers $S\left( p,k\right) $.) The numbers $% S_{a,b,r}^{α_{s},β_{s},r_{s},p_{s}}\left( p,k\right) $ are connected with a generalization of Eulerian numbers and polynomials we studied in previous works. This link allows us to propose (first, and then to prove, specially in the case $r=r_{s}=1$) several results involving our generalized Stirling numbers, including several families of new recurrences for Stirling numbers of the second kind. In a future work we consider the recurrence and the differential operator associated to the numbers $% S_{a,b,r}^{α_{s},β_{s},r_{s},p_{s}}\left( p,k\right) $.

Stirling Numbers in Braid Matroid Kazhdan-Lusztig Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Restricted Whitney numbers of the first kind appear in the combinatorial recursion for the matroid Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. In the special case of braid matroids (the matroid associated to the partition lattice, the complete graph, the type A Coxeter arrangement and the symmetric group) these restricted Whitney numbers are Stirling numbers of the first kind. We use this observation to obtain a formula for the coefficients of the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for braid matroids in terms of sums of products of Stirling numbers of the first kind. This results in new identities between Stirling numbers of the first kind and Stirling numbers of the second kind, as well as a non-recursive formula for the braid matroid Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials.

Refinements of the Bell and Stirling numbers
We introduce new refinements of the Bell, factorial, and unsigned Stirling numbers of the first and second kind that unite the derangement, involution, associated factorial, associated Bell, incomplete Stirling, restricted factorial, restricted Bell, and $r$-derangement numbers (and probably more!). By combining methods from analytic combinatorics, umbral calculus, and probability theory, we derive several recurrence relations and closed form expressions for these numbers. By specializing our results to the classical case, we recover explicit formulae for the Bell and Stirling numbers as sums over compositions.

Partition Algebras and the Invariant Theory of the Symmetric Group
Published • View PublicationBIB
The symmetric group $\mathsf{S}_n$ and the partition algebra $\mathsf{P}_k(n)$ centralize one another in their actions on the $k$-fold tensor power $\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k}$ of the $n$-dimensional permutation module $\mathsf{M}_n$ of $\mathsf{S}_n$. The duality afforded by the commuting actions determines an algebra homomorphism $Φ_{k,n}: \mathsf{P}_k(n) \to \mathsf{End}_{\mathsf{S}_n}(\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k})$ from the partition algebra to the centralizer algebra $\mathsf{End}_{\mathsf{S}_n}(\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k})$, which is a surjection for all $k, n \in \mathbb{Z}_{\ge 1}$, and an isomorphism when $n \ge 2k$. We present results that can be derived from the duality between $\mathsf{S}_n$ and $\mathsf{P}_k(n)$; for example, (i) expressions for the multiplicities of the irreducible $\mathsf{S}_n$-summands of $\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k}$, (ii) formulas for the dimensions of the irreducible modules for the centralizer algebra $\mathsf{End}_{\mathsf{S}_n}(\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k})$, (iii) a bijection between vacillating tableaux and set-partition tableaux, (iv) identities relating Stirling numbers of the second kind and the number of fixed points of permutations, and (v) character values for the partition algebra $\mathsf{P}_k(n)$. When $2k >n$, the map $Φ_{k,n}$ has a nontrivial kernel which is generated as a two-sided ideal by a single idempotent. We describe the kernel and image of $Φ_{k,n}$ in terms of the orbit basis of $\mathsf{P}_k(n)$ and explain how the surjection $Φ_{k,n}$ can also be used to obtain the fundamental theorems of invariant theory for the symmetric group.

$q$-Stirling numbers revisited
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 25 Issue 1 (2018), Paper #P1.37 • View PublicationBIB
We give combinatorial proofs of $q$-Stirling identities using restricted growth words. This includes a poset theoretic proof of Carlitz's identity, a new proof of the $q$-Frobenius identity of Garsia and Remmel and of Ehrenborg's Hankel $q$-Stirling determinantal identity. We also develop a two parameter generalization to unify identities of Mercier and include a symmetric function version.

A New Approach to the $r$-Whitney Numbers by Using Combinatorial Differential Calculus
In the present article we introduce two new combinatorial interpretations of the $r$-Whitney numbers of the second kind obtained from the combinatorics of the differential operators associated to the grammar $G:=\{ y\rightarrow yx^{m}, x\rightarrow x\}$. By specializing $m=1$ we obtain also a new combinatorial interpretation of the $r$-Stirling numbers of the second kind. Again, by specializing to the case $r=0$ we introduce a new generalization of the Stirling number of the second kind and through them a binomial type family of polynomials that generalizes Touchard's. Moreover, we show several well-known identities involving the $r$-Dowling polynomials and the $r$-Whitney numbers using the combinatorial differential calculus. Finally we prove that the $r$-Dowling polynomials are a Sheffer family relative to the generalized Touchard binomial family, study their umbral inverses, and introduce $[m]$-Stirling numbers of the first kind. From the relation between umbral calculus and the Riordan matrices we give several new combinatorial identities involving the $r$-Whitney number of both kinds, Bernoulli and Euler polynomials.
Extrema Property of the $k$-Ranking of Directed Paths and Cycles
Published in AKCE International Journal of Graphs and Combinatorics, 13, (2016) 38--53 • View PublicationBIB
A $k$-ranking of a directed graph $G$ is a labeling of the vertex set of $G$ with $k$ positive integers such that every directed path connecting two vertices with the same label includes a vertex with a larger label in between. The rank number of $G$ is defined to be the smallest $k$ such that $G$ has a $k$-ranking. We find the largest possible directed graph that can be obtained from a directed path or a directed cycle by attaching new edges to the vertices such that the new graphs have the same rank number as the original graphs. The adjacency matrix of the resulting graph is embedded in the Sierpiński triangle. We present a connection between the number of edges that can be added to paths and the Stirling numbers of the second kind. These results are generalized to create directed graphs which are unions of directed paths and directed cycles that maintain the rank number of a base graph of a directed path or a directed cycle.
Q-analogues of the Fibo-Stirling numbers
Let $F_n$ denote the $n^{th}$ Fibonacci number relative to the initial conditions $F_0=0$ and $F_1=1$. Bach, Paudyal, and Remmel introduced Fibonacci analogues of the Stirling numbers called Fibo-Stirling numbers of the first and second kind. These numbers serve as the connection coefficients between the Fibo-falling factorial basis $\{(x)_{\downarrow_{F,n}}:n \geq 0\}$ and the Fibo-rising factorial basis $\{(x)_{\uparrow_{F,n}}:n \geq 0\}$ which are defined by $(x)_{\downarrow_{F,0}} = (x)_{\uparrow_{F,0}} = 1$ and for $k \geq 1$, $(x)_{\downarrow_{F,k}} = x(x-F_1) \cdots (x-F_{k-1})$ and $(x)_{\uparrow_{F,k}} = x(x+F_1) \cdots (x+F_{k-1})$. We gave a general rook theory model which allowed us to give combinatorial interpretations of the Fibo-Stirling numbers of the first and second kind. There are two natural $q$-analogues of the falling and rising Fibo-factorial basis. That is, let $[x]_q = \frac{q^x-1}{q-1}$. Then we let $[x]_{\downarrow_{q,F,0}} = \overline{[x]}_{\downarrow_{q,F,0}} = [x]_{\uparrow_{q,F,0}} = \overline{[x]}_{\uparrow_{q,F,0}}=1$ and, for $k > 0$, we let $[x]_{\downarrow_{q,F,k}} = [x]_q [x-F_1]_q \cdots [x-F_{k-1}]_q$, $\overline{[x]}_{\downarrow_{q,F,k}}= [x]_q ([x]_q-[F_1]_q) \cdots ([x]_q-[F_{k-1}]_q)$, $[x]_{\uparrow_{q,F,k}}= [x]_q [x+F_1]_q \cdots [x+F_{k-1}]_q$, and $\overline{[x]}_{\uparrow_{q,F,k}}= [x]_q ([x]_q+[F_1]_q) \cdots ([x]_q+[F_{k-1}]_q)$. In this paper, we show we can modify the rook theory model of Bach, Paudyal, and Remmel to give combinatorial interpretations for the two different types $q$-analogues of the Fibo-Stirling numbers which arise as the connection coefficients between the two different $q$-analogues of the Fibonacci falling and rising factorial bases. \end{abstract}

Combinatorial applications of the special numbers and polynomials
Published in Filomat 32.20.2018. 6869..6877 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, by using some families of special numbers and polynomials with their generating functions, we give various properties of these numbers and polynomials. These numbers are related to the well-known numbers and polynomials, which are the Euler numbers, the Stirling numbers of the second kind, the central factorial numbers and the array polynomials. We also discuss some combinatorial interpretations of these numbers related to the rook polynomials and numbers. Furthermore, we give computation formulas for these numbers and polynomials.
On xD-Generalizations of Stirling Numbers and Lah Numbers via Graphs and Rooks
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper studies the generalizations of the Stirling numbers of both kinds and the Lah numbers in association with the normal order problem in the Weyl algebra $W=\langle x,D|Dx-xD=1\rangle$. Any word $ω\in W$ with $m$ $x$'s and $n$ $D$'s can be expressed in the normally ordered form $ω=x^{m-n}\sum_{k\ge 0} {ω\brace {k}} x^{k}D^{k}$, where ${ω\brace {k}}$ is known as the Stirling number of the second kind for the word $ω$. This study considers the expansions of restricted words $ω$ in $W$ over the sequences $\{(xD)^{k}\}_{k\ge 0}$ and $\{xD^{k}x^{k-1}\}_{k\ge 0}$. Interestingly, the coefficients in individual expansions turn out to be generalizations of the Stirling numbers of the first kind and the Lah numbers. The coefficients will be determined through enumerations of some combinatorial structures linked to the words $ω$, involving decreasing forest decompositions of quasi-threshold graphs and non-attacking rook placements on Ferrers boards. Extended to $q$-analogues, weighted refinements of the combinatorial interpretations are also investigated for words in the $q$-deformed Weyl algebra.
Convex hulls of random walks: Expected number of faces and face probabilities
Published • View PublicationBIB
Consider a sequence of partial sums $S_i= ξ_1+\dots+ξ_i$, $1\leq i\leq n$, starting at $S_0=0$, whose increments $ξ_1,\dots,ξ_n$ are random vectors in $\mathbb R^d$, $d\leq n$. We are interested in the properties of the convex hull $C_n:=\mathrm{Conv}(S_0,S_1,\dots,S_n)$. Assuming that the tuple $(ξ_1,\dots,ξ_n)$ is exchangeable and a certain general position condition holds, we prove that the expected number of $k$-dimensional faces of $C_n$ is given by the formula $$ \mathbb E [f_k(C_n)] = \frac{2\cdot k!}{n!} \sum_{l=0}^{\infty}\genfrac{[}{]}{0pt}{}{n+1}{d-2l} \genfrac{\{}{\}}{0pt}{}{d-2l}{k+1}, $$ for all $0\leq k \leq d-1$, where $\genfrac{[}{]}{0pt}{}{n}{m}$ and $\genfrac{\{}{\}}{0pt}{}{n}{m}$ are Stirling numbers of the first and second kind, respectively. Further, we compute explicitly the probability that for given indices $0\leq i_1<\dots <i_{k+1}\leq n$, the points $S_{i_1},\dots,S_{i_{k+1}}$ form a $k$-dimensional face of $\mathrm{Conv}(S_0,S_1,\dots,S_n)$. This is done in two different settings: for random walks with symmetrically exchangeable increments and for random bridges with exchangeable increments. These results generalize the classical one-dimensional discrete arcsine law for the position of the maximum due to E. Sparre Andersen. All our formulae are distribution-free, that is do not depend on the distribution of the increments $ξ_k$'s. The main ingredient in the proof is the computation of the probability that the origin is absorbed by a joint convex hull of several random walks and bridges whose increments are invariant with respect to the action of direct product of finitely many reflection groups of types $A_{n-1}$ and $B_n$. This probability, in turn, is related to the number of Weyl chambers of a product-type reflection group that are intersected by a linear subspace in general position.

Combinatorial Identities for Generalized Stirling Numbers Expanding $f$-Factorial Functions and the $f$-Harmonic Numbers
We introduce a class of $f(t)$-factorials, or $f(t)$-Pochhammer symbols, that includes many, if not most, well-known factorial and multiple factorial function variants as special cases. We consider the combinatorial properties of the corresponding generalized classes of Stirling numbers of the first kind which arise as the coefficients of the symbolic polynomial expansions of these $f$-factorial functions. The combinatorial properties of these more general parameterized Stirling number triangles we prove within the article include analogs to known expansions of the ordinary Stirling numbers by $p$-order harmonic number sequences through the definition of a corresponding class of $p$-order $f$-harmonic numbers.

Zeta Series Generating Function Transformations Related to Generalized Stirling Numbers and Partial Sums of the Hurwitz Zeta Function
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define a generalized class of modified zeta series transformations generating the partial sums of the Hurwitz zeta function and series expansions of the Lerch transcendent function. The new transformation coefficients we define within the article satisfy expansions by generalized harmonic number sequences, or the partial sums of the Hurwitz zeta function, which are analogous to known properties for the Stirling numbers of the first kind and for the known transformation coefficients employed to enumerate variants of the polylogarithm function series. Applications of the new results we prove in the article include new series expansions of the Dirichlet beta function, the Legendre chi function, BBP-type series identities for special constants, alternating and exotic Euler sum variants, alternating zeta functions with powers of quadratic denominators, and particular series defining special cases of the Riemann zeta function constants at the positive integers $s \geq 3$.
