Central aspects of skew translation quadrangles, I
Published • View PublicationBIB
Except for the Hermitian buildings $\mathcal{H}(4,q^2)$, up to a combination of duality, translation duality or Payne integration, every known finite building of type $\mathbb{B}_2$ satisfies a set of general synthetic properties, usually put together in the term "skew translation generalized quadrangle" (STGQ). In this series of papers, we classify finite skew translation generalized quadrangles. In the first installment of the series, as corollaries of the machinery we develop in the present paper, (a) we obtain the surprising result that any skew translation quadrangle of odd order $(s,s)$ is a symplectic quadrangle; (b) we determine all skew translation quadrangles with distinct elation groups (a problem posed by Payne in a less general setting); (c) we develop a structure theory for root-elations of skew translation quadrangles which will also be used in further parts, and which essentially tells us that a very general class of skew translation quadrangles admits the theoretical maximal number of root-elations for each member, and hence all members are "central" (the main property needed to control STGQs, as which will be shown throughout); (d) we solve the Main Parameter Conjecture for a class of STGQs containing the class of the previous item, and which conjecturally coincides with the class of all STGQs.

Elementary derivation of Weingarten functions of classical Lie groups
Integration of polynomials over the classical groups of unitary, orthogonal and symplectic matrices can be reduced to basic building blocks known as Weingarten functions. We present an elementary derivation of these functions.

Pairwise transitive 2-designs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We classify the pairwise transitive 2-designs, that is, 2-designs such that a group of automorphisms is transitive on the following five sets of ordered pairs: point-pairs, incident point-block pairs, non-incident point-block pairs, intersecting block-pairs and non-intersecting block-pairs. These 2-designs fall into two classes: the symmetric ones and the quasisymmetric ones. The symmetric examples include the symmetric designs from projective geometry, the 11-point biplane, the Higman-Sims design, and designs of points and quadratic forms on symplectic spaces. The quasisymmetric examples arise from affine geometry and the point-line geometry of projective spaces, as well as several sporadic examples.
On compositions with $x^2/(1-x)$

In the past, empirical evidence has been presented that Hilbert series of symplectic quotients of unitary representations obey a certain universal system of infinitely many constraints. Formal series with this property have been called \emph{symplectic}. Here we show that a formal power series is symplectic if and only if it is a formal composite with the formal power series $x^2/(1-x)$. Hence the set of symplectic power series forms a subalgebra of the algebra of formal power series. The subalgebra property is translated into an identity for the coefficients of the even Euler polynomials, which can be interpreted as a cubic identity for the Bernoulli numbers. Furthermore we show that a rational power series is symplectic if and only if it is invariant under the idempotent Möbius transformation $x\mapsto x/(x-1)$. It follows that the Hilbert series of a graded Cohen-Macaulay algebra $A$ is symplectic if and only if $A$ is Gorenstein with its a-invariant and its Krull dimension adding up to zero. It is shown that this is the case for algebras of regular functions on symplectic quotients of unitary representations of tori.
Veldkamp-Space Aspects of a Sequence of Nested Binary Segre Varieties
Published in Ann. Inst. Henri Poincare Comb. Phys. Interact. 2 (2015) 309-333 • View PublicationBIB
Let $S_{(N)} \equiv PG(1,\,2) \times PG(1,\,2) \times \cdots \times PG(1,\,2)$ be a Segre variety that is $N$-fold direct product of projective lines of size three. Given two geometric hyperplanes $H'$ and $H''$ of $S_{(N)}$, let us call the triple $\{H', H'', \overline{H' ΔH''}\}$ the Veldkamp line of $S_{(N)}$. We shall demonstrate, for the sequence $2 \leq N \leq 4$, that the properties of geometric hyperplanes of $S_{(N)}$ are fully encoded in the properties of Veldkamp {\it lines} of $S_{(N-1)}$. Using this property, a complete classification of all types of geometric hyperplanes of $S_{(4)}$ is provided. Employing the fact that, for $2 \leq N \leq 4$, the (ordinary part of) Veldkamp space of $S_{(N)}$ is $PG(2^N-1,2)$, we shall further describe which types of geometric hyperplanes of $S_{(N)}$ lie on a certain hyperbolic quadric $\mathcal{Q}_0^+(2^N-1,2) \subset PG(2^N-1,2)$ that contains the $S_{(N)}$ and is invariant under its stabilizer group; in the $N=4$ case we shall also single out those of them that correspond, via the Lagrangian Grassmannian of type $LG(4,8)$, to the set of 2295 maximal subspaces of the symplectic polar space $\mathcal{W}(7,2)$.

On BEL-configurations and finite semifields
Published • View PublicationBIB
The BEL-construction for finite semifields was introduced in \cite{BEL2007}; a geometric method for constructing semifield spreads, using so-called BEL-configurations in $V(rn,q)$. In this paper we investigate this construction in greater detail, and determine an explicit multiplication for the semifield associated with a BEL-configuration in $V(rn,q)$, extending the results from \cite{BEL2007}, where this was obtained only for $r=n$. Given a BEL-configuration with associated semifields spread $\mathcal{S}$, we also show how to find a BEL-configuration corresponding to the dual spread $\mathcal{S}^d$. Furthermore, we study the effect of polarities in $V(rn,q)$ on BEL-configurations, leading to a characterisation of BEL-configurations associated to symplectic semifields. We give precise conditions for when two BEL-configurations in $V(n^2,q)$ define isotopic semifields. We define operations which preserve the BEL property, and show how non-isotopic semifields can be equivalent under this operation. We also define an extension of the ```switching'' operation on BEL-configurations in $V(2n,q)$ introduced in \cite{BEL2007}, which, together with the transpose operation, leads to a group of order $8$ acting on BEL-configurations.

Ribbon graphs and bialgebra of Lagrangian subspaces
Published in Journal of Knot Theory and Its Ramifications vol. 26 (2016) 1642006 (26 pages) • View PublicationBIB
To each ribbon graph we assign a so-called L-space, which is a Lagrangian subspace in an even-dimensional vector space with the standard symplectic form. This invariant generalizes the notion of the intersection matrix of a chord diagram. Moreover, the actions of Morse perestroikas (or taking a partial dual) and Vassiliev moves on ribbon graphs are reinterpreted nicely in the language of L-spaces, becoming changes of bases in this vector space. Finally, we define a bialgebra structure on the span of L-spaces, which is analogous to the 4-bialgebra structure on chord diagrams.

Pfaffian sum formula for the symplectic Grassmannians
Published in Mathematische Zeitschrift, 2015, Volume 280, Issue 1-2, pp 269-306 • View PublicationBIB
We study the torus equivariant Schubert classes of the Grassmannian of non-maximal isotropic subspaces in a symplectic vector space. We prove a formula that expresses each of those classes as a sum of multi Schur-Pfaffians, whose entries are equivariantly modified special Schubert classes. Our result gives a proof to Wilson's conjectural formula, which generalizes the Giambelli formula for the ordinary cohomology proved by Buch-Kresch-Tamvakis, given in terms of Young's raising operators. Furthermore we show that the formula extends to a certain family of Schubert classes of the symplectic partial isotropic flag varieties.

Calculating the dimension of the universal embedding of the symplectic dual polar space using languages
Published • View PublicationBIB
The main result of this paper is the construction of a bijection of the set of words in so-called standard order of length $n$ formed by four different letters and the set $\mathbb{N}^n$ of all subspaces of a fixed $n$-dimensional maximal isotropic subspace of the $2n$-dimensional symplectic space $V$ over $\mathbb{F}_2$ which are not maximal in a certain sense. Since the number of different words in standard order is known, this gives an alternative proof for the formula of the dimension of the universal embedding of a symplectic dual polar space $\mathcal G_n$. Along the way, we give formulas for the number of all $n$- and $(n-1)$-dimensional totally isotropic subspaces of $V$.

A Notable Relation between $N$-Qubit and $2^{N-1}$-Qubit Pauli Groups via Binary ${\rm LGr}(N,2N)$
Published in SIGMA 10 (2014), 041, 16 pages • View PublicationBIB
Employing the fact that the geometry of the $N$-qubit ($N \geq 2$) Pauli group is embodied in the structure of the symplectic polar space $\mathcal{W}(2N-1,2)$ and using properties of the Lagrangian Grassmannian ${\rm LGr}(N,2N)$ defined over the smallest Galois field, it is demonstrated that there exists a bijection between the set of maximum sets of mutually commuting elements of the $N$-qubit Pauli group and a certain subset of elements of the $2^{N-1}$-qubit Pauli group. In order to reveal finer traits of this correspondence, the cases $N=3$ (also addressed recently by Lévay, Planat and Saniga [J. High Energy Phys. 2013 (2013), no. 9, 037, 35 pages, arXiv:1305.5689]) and $N=4$ are discussed in detail. As an apt application of our findings, we use the stratification of the ambient projective space ${\rm PG}(2^N-1,2)$ of the $2^{N-1}$-qubit Pauli group in terms of $G$-orbits, where $G \equiv {\rm SL}(2,2)\times {\rm SL}(2,2)\times\cdots\times {\rm SL}(2,2)\rtimes S_N$, to decompose $\underlineπ({\rm LGr}(N,2N))$ into non-equivalent orbits. This leads to a partition of ${\rm LGr}(N,2N)$ into distinguished classes that can be labeled by elements of the above-mentioned Pauli groups.

Supercharacters of unipotent groups defined by involutions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct supercharacter theories of finite unipotent groups in the orthogonal, symplectic and unitary types. Our method utilizes group actions in a manner analogous to that of Diaconis and Isaacs in their construction of supercharacters of algebra groups. The resulting supercharacter theories agree with those of André and Neto in the case of the unipotent orthogonal and symplectic matrices and generalize to a large collection of subgroups. In the unitary group case, we describe the supercharacters and superclasses in terms of labeled set partitions and calculate the supercharacter table.

Counting Conjugacy Classes of Elements of Finite Order in Lie Groups
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 36 (2014), pp. 86-96 • View PublicationBIB
Using combinatorial techniques, we answer two questions about simple classical Lie groups. Define $N(G,m)$ to be the number of conjugacy classes of elements of finite order $m$ in a Lie group $G$, and $N(G,m,s)$ to be the number of such classes whose elements have $s$ distinct eigenvalues or conjugate pairs of eigenvalues. What is $N(G,m)$ for $G$ a unitary, orthogonal, or symplectic group? What is $N(G,m,s)$ for these groups? For some cases, the first question was answered a few decades ago via group-theoretic techniques. It appears that the second question has not been asked before; here it is inspired by questions related to enumeration of vacua in string theory. Our combinatorial methods allow us to answer both questions.

Arboreal Singularities
Published in Geom. Topol. 21 (2017) 1231-1274 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a class of combinatorial singularities of Lagrangian skeleta of symplectic manifolds. The link of each singularity is a finite regular cell complex homotopy equivalent to a bouquet of spheres. It is determined by its face poset which is naturally constructed starting from a tree (nonempty finite acyclic graph). The choice of a root vertex of the tree leads to a natural front projection of the singularity along with an orientation of the edges of the tree. Microlocal sheaves along the singularity, calculated via the front projection, are equivalent to modules over the quiver given by the directed tree.

Vertex operator realizations of symplectic and orthogonal Schur functions are studied and expanded. New proofs of determinant identities of irreducible characters for the symplectic and orthogonal groups are given. We also give a new proof of the duality between the universal orthogonal and symplectic Schur functions using vertex operators.

Jacobi-Trudi determinants and characters of minimal affinizations
Published in Pacific J. Math. 272 (2014), no. 1, 237-244 • View PublicationBIB
In their study of characters of minimal affinizations of representations of orthogonal and symplectic Lie algebras, Chari and Greenstein conjectured that certain Jacobi-Trudi determinants satisfy an alternating sum formula. In this note, we prove their conjecture and slightly more. The proof relies on some symmetries of the ring of symmetric functions discovered by Koike and Terada. Using results of Hernandez, Mukhin-Young, and Naoi, this implies that the characters of minimal affinizations in types B, C, and D are given by a Jacobi-Trudi determinant.
Ehrhart polynomials and symplectic embeddings of ellipsoids
Published • View PublicationBIB
McDuff and Schlenk determined when a four-dimensional ellipsoid can be symplectically embedded into a ball, and found that part of the answer is given by an infinite "Fibonacci staircase." Similarly, Frenkel and Müller determined when a four-dimensional ellipsoid can be symplectically embedded into the ellipsoid E(1,2) and found that part of the answer is given by a "Pell staircase." ECH capacities give an obstruction to symplectically embedding one four-dimensional ellipsoid into another, and McDuff showed that this obstruction is sharp. We use this result to give new proofs of the staircases of McDuff-Schlenk and Frenkel-Müller, and we prove that another infinite staircase arises for embeddings into the ellipsoid E(1,3/2). Our proofs relate these staircases to a combinatorial phenomenon of independent interest called "period collapse" of the Ehrhart quasipolynomial. In the appendix, we use McDuff's theorem to show that for a >= 6, the only obstruction to embedding an ellipsoid E(1,a) into a scaling of E(1,3/2) is the volume, and we also give new proofs of similar results for embeddings into scalings of E(1,1) and E(1,2).

Homology of analogues of Heisenberg Lie algebras
Published in Math. Res. Lett. 22 (2015), no. 4, 1223-1241 • View PublicationBIB
We calculate the homology of three families of 2-step nilpotent Lie (super)algebras associated with the symplectic, orthogonal, and general linear groups. The symplectic case was considered by Getzler and the main motivation for this work was to complete the calculations started by him. In all three cases, these algebras can be realized as the nilpotent radical of a parabolic subalgebra of a simple Lie algebra, and our first approach relies on a theorem of Kostant, but is otherwise elementary and involves combinatorics of Weyl groups and partitions which may be of independent interest. Our second approach is an application of (un)stable representation theory of the classical groups in the sense of recent joint work of the author with Snowden, which is shorter and more conceptual.

Symplectic spreads, planar functions and mutually unbiased bases
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics 41 (2015), 1055-1077 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we give explicit descriptions of complete sets of mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) and orthogonal decompositions of special Lie algebras $sl_n(\mathbb{C})$ obtained from commutative and symplectic semifields, and from some other non-semifield symplectic spreads. Relations between various constructions are also studied. We show that the automorphism group of a complete set of MUBs is isomorphic to the automorphism group of the corresponding orthogonal decomposition of the Lie algebra $sl_n(\mathbb{C})$. In the case of symplectic spreads this automorphism group is determined by the automorphism group of the spread. By using the new notion of pseudo-planar functions over fields of characteristic two we give new explicit constructions of complete sets of MUBs.

Complex Lines with Restricted Angles
This thesis is a study of large sets of unit vectors in $\cx^n$ such that the absolute value of their standard inner products takes on only a small number of values. We begin with bounds: what is the maximal size of a set of lines with only a given set of angles? We rederive a series of upper bounds originally due to Delsarte, Goethals and Seidel, but in a novel way using only zonal polynomials and linear algebra. In the process we get some new results about complex $t$-designs and also some new characterizations of tightness. Next we consider constructions. We describe some generic constructions using linear codes and Cayley graphs, and then move to two specific instances of the problem: mutually unbiased bases and equiangular lines. Both cases are motivated by problems in quantum computing, although they have applications in digital communications as well. Mutually unbiased bases are collections of orthonormal bases with a constant angle between vectors from different bases. We construct some maximal sets in prime-power dimensions, originally due to Calderbank, Cameron, Kantor and Seidel, but again in a novel way using relative difference sets or distance-regular antipodal covers. We also detail their numerous relations to other combinatorial objects, including symplectic spreads, orthogonal decompositions of Lie algebras, and spin models. Peripherally, we discuss mutually unbiased bases in small dimensions that are not prime powers and in real vector spaces. Equiangular lines are collections of vectors with only one angle between them. We use difference sets from finite geometry to construct equiangular lines: these sets do not have maximal size, but they are maximal with respect to having all entries of the same absolute value. We also include some negative results about constructions of maximal sets in large dimensions.

Grassmannian Connection Between Three- and Four-Qubit Observables, Mermin's Contextuality and Black Holes
Published in JHEP 09 (2013) 037 • View PublicationBIB
We invoke some ideas from finite geometry to map bijectively 135 heptads of mutually commuting three-qubit observables into 135 symmetric four-qubit ones. After labeling the elements of the former set in terms of a seven-dimensional Clifford algebra, we present the bijective map and most pronounced actions of the associated symplectic group on both sets in explicit forms. This formalism is then employed to shed novel light on recently-discovered structural and cardinality properties of an aggregate of three-qubit Mermin's 'magic' pentagrams. Moreover, some intriguing connections with the so-called black-hole--qubit correspondence are also pointed out.
