The Asymptotic Distribution of the Rank for Unimodal Sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the asymptotic behavior of the rank statistic for unimodal sequences. We use analytic techniques involving asymptotic expansions in order to prove asymptotic formulas for the moments of the rank. Furthermore, when appropriately normalized, the values of the unimodal rank asymptotically follow a logistic distribution. We also prove similar results for Durfee unimodal sequences and semi-strict unimodal sequences, with the only major difference being that the (normalized) rank for semistrict unimodal sequences has a distributional limit of a point mass probability distribution.

Tree Descent Polynomials: Unimodality and Central Limit Theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a poset whose Hasse diagram is a rooted plane forest $F$, we consider the corresponding tree descent polynomial $A_F(q)$, which is a generating function of the number of descents of the labelings of $F$. When the forest is a path, $A_F(q)$ specializes to the classical Eulerian polynomial. We prove that the coefficient sequence of $A_F(q)$ is unimodal and that if $\{T_{n}\}$ is a sequence of trees with $|T_{n}| = n$ and maximal down degree $D_{n} = O(n^{0.5-ε})$ then the number of descents in a labeling of $T_{n}$ is asymptotically normal.

Eulerian polynomials for multipermutations and signed multipermutations
In this paper, we study Eulerian polynomials for permutations and signed permutations of the multiset $\{1,1,2,2,\ldots,n,n\}$. Properties of these polynomials, including recurrence relations and unimodality are discussed. In particular, we give a unified proof of the fact that these polynomials are unimodal with modes in the middle.

Algebraic Relations Between Partition Functions and the $j$-Function
Published in Res. number theory 6, 2 (2020) • View PublicationBIB
We obtain identities and relationships between the modular $j$-function, the generating functions for the classical partition function and the Andrews $spt$-function, and two functions related to unimodal sequences and a new partition statistic we call the "signed triangular weight" of a partition. These results follow from the closed formula we obtain for the Hecke action on a distinguished harmonic Maass form $\mathscr{M}(τ)$ defined by Bringmann in her work on the Andrews $spt$-function. This formula involves a sequence of polynomials in $j(τ)$, through which we ultimately arrive at expressions for the coefficients of the $j$-function purely in terms of these combinatorial quantities.

Eccentricity function in distance-hereditary graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph $G=(V,E)$ is distance hereditary if every induced path of $G$ is a shortest path. In this paper, we show that the eccentricity function $e(v)=\max\{d(v,u): u\in V\}$ in any distance-hereditary graph $G$ is almost unimodal, that is, every vertex $v$ with $e(v)> rad(G)+1$ has a neighbor with smaller eccentricity. Here, $rad(G)=\min\{e(v): v\in V\}$ is the radius of graph $G$. Moreover, we use this result to fully characterize the centers of distance-hereditary graphs. Several bounds on the eccentricity of a vertex with respect to its distance to the center of $G$ or to the ends of a diametral path are established. Finally, we propose a new linear time algorithm to compute all eccentricities in a distance-hereditary graph.

Antichain generating polynomials of posets
This paper gives a formula for the antichain generating polynomial $\mathcal{N}_{[k]\times Q}$ of the poset $[k]\times Q$, where $[k]$ is an arbitrary chain and $Q$ is any finite graded poset. When $Q$ specializes to be a connected minuscule poet, which was classified by Proctor in 1984, we find that the polynomial $\mathcal{N}_{[k]\times Q}$ bears nice properties. For instance, we will recover the $B_n$-Narayana polynomial and the $D_{2n+2}$-Narayana polynomial. We collect evidence for the conjecture that whenever $\mathcal{N}_{[k]\times P}(x)$ is palindromic, it must be $γ$-positive. Moreover, the family $\mathcal{N}_{[2]\times [n]\times [m]}$ should be real-rooted and $\mathcal{N}_{[2]\times [n]\times [n+1]}$ should be $γ$-positive. We also conjecture that $\mathcal{N}_{Q}(x)$ is log-concave (thus unimodal) for any connected Peck poset $Q$.

A Framework for Modular Properties of False Theta Functions
False theta functions closely resemble ordinary theta functions, however they do not have the modular transformation properties that theta functions have. In this paper, we find modular completions for false theta functions, which among other things gives an efficient way to compute their obstruction to modularity. This has potential applications for a variety of contexts where false and partial theta series appear. To exemplify the utility of this derivation, we discuss the details of its use on two cases. First, we derive a convergent Rademacher-type exact formula for the number of unimodal sequences via the Circle Method and extend earlier work on their asymptotic properties. Secondly, we show how quantum modular properties of the limits of false theta functions can be rederived directly from the modular completion of false theta functions proposed in this paper.

On the spectral properties of Feigenbaum graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A Horizontal Visibility Graph (HVG) is a simple graph extracted from an ordered sequence of real values, and this mapping has been used to provide a combinatorial encryption of time series for the task of performing network based time series analysis. While some properties of the spectrum of these graphs --such as the largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix-- have been routinely used as measures to characterise time series complexity, a theoretic understanding of such properties is lacking. In this work we explore some algebraic and spectral properties of these graphs associated to periodic and chaotic time series. We focus on the family of Feigenbaum graphs, which are HVGs constructed in correspondence with the trajectories of one-parameter unimodal maps undergoing a period-doubling route to chaos (Feigenbaum scenario). For the set of values of the map's parameter $μ$ for which the orbits are periodic with period $2^n$, Feigenbaum graphs are fully characterised by two integers (n,k) and admit an algebraic structure. We explore the spectral properties of these graphs for finite n and k, and among other interesting patterns we find a scaling relation for the maximal eigenvalue and we prove some bounds explaining it. We also provide numerical and rigorous results on a few other properties including the determinant or the number of spanning trees. In a second step, we explore the set of Feigenbaum graphs obtained for the range of values of the map's parameter $μ$ for which the system displays chaos. We show that in this case, Feigenbaum graphs form an ensemble for each value of $μ$ and the system is typically weakly self-averaging. Unexpectedly, we find that while the largest eigenvalue can distinguish chaos from an iid process, it is not a good measure to quantify the chaoticity of the process, and that the eigenvalue density does a better job.

Statistics on Linear Chord Diagrams
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 21 no. 2, Permutation Patters 2018 (January 23, 2020) dmtcs:5211 • View PublicationBIB
Linear chord diagrams are partitions of $\left[2n\right]$ into $n$ blocks of size two called chords. We refer to a block of the form $\{i,i+1\}$ as a short chord. In this paper, we study the distribution of the number of short chords on the set of linear chord diagrams, as a generalization of the Narayana distribution obtained when restricted to the set of noncrossing linear chord diagrams. We provide a combinatorial proof that this distribution is unimodal and has an expected value of one. We also study the number of pairs $(i,i+1)$ where $i$ is the minimal element of a chord and $i+1$ is the maximal element of a chord. We show that the distribution of this statistic on linear chord diagrams corresponds to the second-order Eulerian triangle and is log-concave.
Analogs of Schur functions for rank two Weyl groups obtained from grid-like posets
In prior work, the authors, along with M. McClard, R. A. Proctor, and N. J. Wildberger, studied certain distributive lattice models for the `Weyl bialternants' (aka `Weyl characters') associated with the rank two root systems/Weyl groups. These distributive lattices were uniformly described as lattices of order ideals taken from certain grid-like posets, although the arguments connecting the lattices to Weyl bialternants were case-by-case depending on the type of the rank two root system. Using this connection with Weyl bialternants, these lattices were shown to be rank symmetric and rank unimodal, and their rank generating functions were shown to have beautiful quotient-of-products expressions. Here, these results are re-derived from scratch using completely uniform and elementary combinatorial reasoning in conjunction with some combinatorial methodology developed elsewhere by the second listed author.

Parity-Unimodality and a Cyclic Sieving Phenomenon for Necklaces
We discuss two surprising properties of a family of polynomials that generalize the Mahonian $q$-Catalan polynomials, and more generally the $q$-Schröder polynomials. By interpreting them as $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-characters, we show that the rational $q$-Schröder polynomials are parity-unimodal, which means that the even- and odd-degree coefficients are separately unimodal. Second, we show that they exhibit a $q=-1$ phenomenon. This is a special case of a more general cyclic sieving phenomenon for certain transitive $S_n$-actions, deduced from Molien's formula.

Unimodal Sequence Generating Functions Arising from Partition Ranks
In this paper we study generating functions resembling the rank of strongly unimodal sequences. We give combinatorial interpretations, identities in terms of mock modular forms, asymptotics, and a parity result. Our functions imitate a relation between the rank of strongly unimodal sequences and the rank of integer partitions.

Binomial Eulerian polynomials for colored permutations
Binomial Eulerian polynomials first appeared in work of Postnikov, Reiner and Williams on the face enumeration of generalized permutohedra. They are $γ$-positive (in particular, palindromic and unimodal) polynomials which can be interpreted as $h$-polynomials of certain flag simplicial polytopes and which admit interesting Schur $γ$-positive symmetric function generalizations. This paper introduces analogues of these polynomials for $r$-colored permutations with similar properties and uncovers some new instances of equivariant $γ$-positivity in geometric combinatorics.

Poset models for Weyl group analogs of symmetric functions and Schur functions
The `Weyl symmetric functions' studied here naturally generalize classical symmetric (polynomial) functions, and `Weyl bialternants,' sometimes also called Weyl characters, analogize the Schur functions. For this generalization, the underlying symmetry group is a finite Weyl group. A `splitting poset' for a Weyl bialternant is an edge-colored ranked poset possessing a certain structural property and a natural weighting of its elements so that the weighted sum of poset elements is the given Weyl bialternant. Connected such posets are of combinatorial interest in part because they are rank symmetric and rank unimodal and have nice quotient-of-product expressions for their rank generating functions. Supporting graphs of weight bases for irreducible semisimple Lie algebra representations provide one large family of examples. However, many splitting posets can be obtained outside of this Lie theoretic context. This monograph provides a tutorial on Weyl bialternants / Weyl symmetric functions and splitting posets that is largely self-contained and independent of Lie algebra representation theory. New results are also obtained.

Unimodality of the Andrews-Garvan-Dyson cranks of partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The main objective of this paper is to investigate the distribution of the Andrews-Garvan-Dyson crank of a partition. Let $M(m,n)$ denote the number of partitions of $n$ with the Andrews-Garvan-Dyson crank $m$, we show that the sequence \break $\{M(m,n)\}_{|m|\leq n-1}$ is unimodal for $n\geq 44$. It turns out that the unimodality of \break $\{M(m,n)\}_{|m|\leq n-1}$ is related to the monotonicity properties of two partition \break functions $p_k(n)$ and $pp_k(n)$. Let $p_k(n)$ denote the number of partitions of $n$ with at most $k$ parts such that the largest part appears at least twice and let $pp_k(n)$ denote the number of pairs $(α,β)$ of partitions of $n$, where $α$ is a partition counted by $p_k(i)$ and $β$ is a partition counted by $p_{k+1}(n-i)$ for $0\leq i\leq n$. We show that $p_k(n)\geq p_k(n-1)$ for $k\geq 5$ and $n\geq 14$ and $pp_k(n)\geq pp_k(n-1)$ for $k\geq 3$ and $n\geq 2$. With the aid of the monotonicity properties on $p_k(n)$ and $pp_k(n)$, we show that $M(m,n)\geq M(m,n-1)$ for $n\geq 14$ and $ 0\leq m \leq n-2$ and $M(m-1,n)\geq M(m,n)$ for $n\geq 44$ and $1\leq m\leq n-1$. By means of the symmetry $M(m,n)=M(-m,n)$, we find that $M(m-1,n)\geq M(m,n)$ for $n\geq 44$ and $1\leq m\leq n-1$ implies that the sequence $\{M(m,n)\}_{|m|\leq n-1}$ is unimodal for $n\geq 44$. We also give a proof of an upper bound for ospt(n) conjectured by Chan and Mao in light of the inequality $M(m-1,n)\geq M(m,n)$ for $n\geq 44$ and $0\leq m\leq n-1$.

Reflexive polytopes arising from bipartite graphs with $γ$-positivity associated to interior polynomials
Published in Selecta Mathematica. New Series 26 (2020), 59 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we introduce polytopes ${\mathcal B}_G$ arising from root systems $B_n$ and finite graphs $G$, and study their combinatorial and algebraic properties. In particular, it is shown that ${\mathcal B}_G$ is reflexive if and only if $G$ is bipartite. Moreover, in the case, ${\mathcal B}_G$ has a regular unimodular triangulation. This implies that the $h^*$-polynomial of ${\mathcal B}_G$ is palindromic and unimodal when $G$ is bipartite. Furthermore, we discuss stronger properties, namely the $γ$-positivity and the real-rootedness of the $h^*$-polynomials. In fact, if $G$ is bipartite, then the $h^*$-polynomial of ${\mathcal B}_G$ is $γ$-positive and its $γ$-polynomial is given by an interior polynomial (a version of the Tutte polynomial for a hypergraph). The $h^*$-polynomial is real-rooted if and only if the corresponding interior polynomial is real-rooted. From a counterexample to Neggers--Stanley conjecture, we construct a bipartite graph $G$ whose $h^*$-polynomial is not real-rooted but $γ$-positive, and coincides with the $h$-polynomial of a flag triangulation of a sphere.

On the unimodality of convolutions of sequences of binomial coefficients
Published in J. Integer Seq. 22 (2019) Article 19.2.8 • Search Publication
We provide necessary and sufficient conditions on the unimodality of a convolution of two sequences of binomial coefficients preceded by a finite number of ones. These convolution sequences arise as as rank sequences of posets of vertex-induced subtrees for a particular class of trees. The number of such trees whose poset of vertex-induced subgraphs containing the root is not rank unimodal is determined for a fixed number of vertices $i$.

Families of major index distributions: closed forms and unimodality
Published • View PublicationBIB
Closed forms for $f_{λ,i} (q) := \sum_{τ\in SYT(λ) : des(τ) = i} q^{maj(τ)}$, the distribution of the major index over standard Young tableaux of given shapes and specified number of descents, are established for a large collection of $λ$ and $i$. Of particular interest is the family that gives a positive answer to a question of Sagan and collaborators. All formulas established in the paper are unimodal, most by a result of Kirillov and Reshetikhin. Many can be identified as specializations of Schur functions via the Jacobi-Trudi identities. If the number of arguments is sufficiently large, it is shown that any finite principal specialization of any Schur function $s_λ(1,q,q^2,\dots,q^{n-1})$ has a combinatorial realization as the distribution of the major index over a given set of tableaux.

On the unimodality of the Taylor expansion coefficients of Jacobian elliptic functions
The Jacobian elliptic functions are standard forms of elliptic functions, and they were independently introduced by C.G.J. Jacobi and N.H. Abel. In this paper, we study the unimodality of Taylor expansion coefficients of the Jacobian elliptic functions sn(u,k) and cn(u,k). By using the theory of gamma-positivity, we obtain that the Taylor expansion coefficients of sn(u,k) are symmetric and unimodal, and that of cn(u,k) are unimodal and alternatingly increasing.

Local $h^*$-Polynomials of Some Weighted Projective Spaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
There is currently a growing interest in understanding which lattice simplices have unimodal local $h^\ast$-polynomials (sometimes called box polynomials); specifically in light of their potential applications to unimodality questions for Ehrhart $h^\ast$-polynomials. In this note, we compute a general form for the local $h^\ast$-polynomial of a well-studied family of lattice simplices whose associated toric varieties are weighted projective spaces. We then apply this formula to prove that certain such lattice simplices, whose combinatorics are naturally encoded using common systems of numeration, all have real-rooted, and thus unimodal, local $h^\ast$-polynomials. As a consequence, we discover a new restricted Eulerian polynomial that is real-rooted, symmetric, and admits intriguing number theoretic properties.
