Billey-Type Formula for KL-Schubert Classes in Hyperbolic Cohomology
This paper studies the KL-Schubert classes defined by Kazhdan-Lusztig bases in $K$-theory and hyperbolic cohomology of flag varieties. We first establish Poincaré dualities of these classes. We then focus on Grassmannians, and establish the Billey-type formula for KL-Schubert classes in hyperbolic cohomology.
Stability and ribbon bases for the rank-selected homology of geometric lattices
This paper analyzes the representation theoretic stability, in the sense of Thomas Church and Benson Farb, of the rank-selected homology of the Boolean lattice and the partition lattice, proving sharp uniform representation stability bounds in both cases. It proves a conjecture of the first author and Reiner by giving the sharp stability bound for general rank sets for the partition lattice. Along the way, a new homology basis sharing useful features with the polytabloid basis for Specht modules is introduced for the rank-selected homology and for the rank-selected Whitney homology of any geometric lattice, resolving an old open question of Björner. These bases give a matroid theoretic analogue of Specht modules.
Cancellation-free version of the quantum $K$-theoretic divisor axiom for the flag manifold in the quasi-minuscule case
We prove a cancellation-free version of the quantum $K$-theoretic divisor axiom for the flag manifold in the quasi-minuscule case. Namely, we remove the cancellations from the quantum $K$-theoretic divisor axiom due to Lenart-Naito-Sagaki-Xu in the case where the fundametal weight corresponding to the divisor class is quasi-minuscule.
Hall-Littlewood-positive harmonic functionals on the algebra of symmetric functions
We study the problem of describing the set of real functionals on the quotient $\textrm{Sym}/(p_2-1)$ of the ring of symmetric functions that are nonnegative on the images of certain modified Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions. This question is equivalent to the problem, posed in [Adv Math 395, p.108087 (2022)], of describing the set of coadjoint-invariant measures for unitary groups over a finite field in the infinite-dimensional setting. Our main results constitute partial progress towards this problem. Firstly, we show that the desired set of functionals is very large, in the sense that it contains explicit families of examples depending on infinitely many parameters. Secondly, we provide an analogue of Kerov's mixing construction that produces new sought after functionals from known old ones. This construction depends on an explicit "$p_2$-twisted action" of $\textrm{Sym}$ on itself and the resulting dual map that makes $\textrm{Sym}$ into a comodule. Finally, our third main result explains the relation between the $p_2$-twisted comultiplication and the usual comultiplication on $\textrm{Sym}$.
A Categorification of Subword Complexes and Its Hall Algebra
Bergeron and Ceballos defined a Hopf algebra structure on equivalence classes of subword complexes. We introduce a category of subword complexes, endow it with a proto-exact-like structure, and show that the corresponding dual Hall Hopf algebra is isomorphic to the algebra of Bergeron-Ceballos. We prove that the full subcategory of root-independent objects is proto-abelian in the sense of Dyckerhoff. We give a categorical lift of flips in subword complexes.
We consider a version of a category of formal direct sums of subobjects for a root-independent subword complex and interpret it in terms of quivers. If the corresponding quiver is a tree, the category is endowed with a proto-exact structure. We show that its Hall algebra is isomorphic to the Hall algebra of the category of representations of this quiver over $\mathbb{F}_1$. Under certain conditions, a flip corresponds to changing a proto-exact structure while keeping the category the same up to isomorphism, which corresponds to a non-trivial automorphism of the Hall algebra. In type $A$, this leads to a realization of the nilpotent part of the universal enveloping algebra and its automorphisms.
A note on irreducible representations of symmetric groups and Sergeev superalgebras
We provide an explicit construction and a closed dimension formula in terms of hook lengths for the irreducible representations for the symmetric groups $\mathfrak{S}_p$ and the Sergeev superalgebras $\mathcal{Y}_p$ over an algebraically closed field $\mathbb{F}$ of characteristic $p>0$.
Zeros in the character table of the symmetric group
Computations of Miller and Scheinerman suggest that the vast majority of the zeros appearing in the character table of the symmetric group are of a certain special type. While we cannot prove this, we resolve a conjecture arising in their paper concerning these zeros, and address a related question of Stanley.
The $k$-cycle shuffling with repeated cards
We investigate the $k$-cycle shuffle on repeated cards, namely on a deck consisting of $l$ identical copies of each of $m$ card types, with total size $n=ml$. We establish asymptotic results for the total variation mixing of this shuffle, including cutoff and explicit limiting profiles. For fixed $l$, we show that the walk exhibits cutoff at time $\frac{n}{k}\log n$ with window of order $\frac{n}{k}$, and we identify the limiting profile in terms of the total variation distance between Poisson distributions arising from quotient fixed-point statistics. When $l\to\infty$ with sufficiently slow growth, more precisely when $l=o(\log n)$, we prove that the cutoff location shifts to $\frac{n}{k}\left(\log n-\frac 12\log l\right)$, again with window of order $\frac{n}{k}$, and that the limiting profile is asymptotically Gaussian, arising from a Poisson comparison after normal approximation.
The proof is based on an approximation of the shuffling measure by an explicitly tractable auxiliary measure, generalizing the $k=2$ case from Jain and Sawhney (arXiv:2410.23944). The representation-theoretic framework underlying the analysis of this auxiliary measure follows from the work of Hough (arXiv:1605.00911) and Nestoridi and Olesker-Taylor (arXiv:2005.13437)
Infinite sequences via Lie algebra actions for oligomorphic groups
Many integer sequences arise as numbers of $G$-orbits on $\binom{X}{n}$ as $n$ varies, for a permutation group $G\subseteq \operatorname{Sym}(X)$. For finite $X$, Stanley proved that these finite sequences increase towards the middle using an action of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_2(\mathbb{C})$. For infinite sets $X$, and hence infinite sequences, Cameron provided an argument for monotonicity. He first identifies orbits with a vector space basis of a certain commutative $k$-algebra $\mathsf{H}_{G,X}^{\star}$, called the orbit algebra. He then considers the operator, which forms the product with the constant $1$-function on $X$, and proves its injectivity. In this paper we generalize Stanley's approach to oligomorphic groups, and in particular extend Cameron's operator to a full $\mathfrak{sl}_2(\mathbb{C})$-action on $\mathsf{H}_{G,X}^{\star}$. We define for every oligomorphic permutation group $G\subseteq \operatorname{Sym}(X)$ the $X$-th tensor power $(k^r)^{\otimes X}$, generalizing work of Entova-Aizenbud. We show that this space carries natural commuting actions of $G$ and the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{gl}_r(k)$, the latter depending on a Harman--Snowden measure $μ$ on $G$. We then show that $\mathsf{H}_{G,X}^{\star}\subseteq (\mathbb{C}^2)^{\otimes X}$ can be decomposed into a direct sum of $\mathfrak{sl}_2(\mathbb{C})$-Verma modules, which gives monotonicity. We explain how our approach applies to Fibonacci numbers, Tribonacci numbers, etc. by constructing measures on products with $(\mathbb{Q},<)$.
Theta functions in acyclic affine type
We characterize the theta functions for vectors in the imaginary wall in a cluster algebra of acyclic affine type and compute some of their structure constants. One of the structure constant computations can be interpreted as new "imaginary" exchange relations among cluster variables. We show that theta functions in the imaginary wall span a subalgebra of the cluster algebra that we call the imaginary subalgebra, which decomposes as a tensor product of tube subalgebras that are generalized cluster algebras of type C. Our proofs exploit mutation-symmetries of the exchange matrix, an earlier characterization of dominance regions in affine type, and combinatorial models for cluster scattering diagrams of acyclic affine type.
Polyptych lattices and marked chain-order polytopes
The theory of polyptych lattices is a framework to obtain a family of toric degenerations whose polytopes are related by piecewise-linear transformations. It can be regarded as a generalization of toric degenerations arising from cluster algebras. In this paper, we study polyptych lattices consisting of transfer maps for marked chain-order polytopes, and obtain a family of toric degenerations of a projective variety to marked chain-order polytopes for the Gelfand-Tsetlin poset. We also compute the Cox ring of this projective variety.
Super-immanants and Littlewood correspondences
In this paper, we introduce the notion of super-immanants for supermatrices over a supercommutative algebra. Using the super Schur-Weyl duality we show that the super immanants play a significant role in covariant tensor representations of the general linear Lie superalgebra. Among various things, we obtain a supertrace formula for super-immanants, which generalizes Kostant's trace formula to the super setting. Furthermore, we show that the Littlewood correspondences between super-immanants and supersymmetric polynomials establish an isomorphism between their corresponding algebras.
Entropy of affine permutations and universality of affine atomic lengths
We introduce and study the notion of entropy of affine permutations and prove that it coincides with the atomic length associated with the sum of the fundamental weights for a type $A$ affine root system, as defined by the first two authors. We then establish an analogue of the Granville-Ono theorem by showing that any nonnegative integer can be realised as the entropy of an affine permutation or alternatively, as the size of a core multipartition as introduced by the last two authors. Our proof uses an additive combinatorics theorem due to Hall on difference sets of permutations modulo $n$. More generally, we give a polynomial expression of the atomic length associated with any dominant weight in affine type $A$ and investigate the problem of its universality. Beyond type $A$, we are able to prove that the entropy of affine type $C_n$ permutations is universal when $2n+1$ is prime. This is achieved by establishing an analogue of Hall's theorem for the hyperoctahedral group based on Alon's combinatorial Nullstellensatz. We also propose conjectures generalising the results presented in the paper, each supported by computational evidence. Finally, we show that in any affine classical type, the problem of the universality of the atomic length simplifies in large rank when the weight considered is conveniently adjusted.
Imprimitive association schemes and elimination theory
We prove that a commutative association scheme is imprimitive if and only if it admits a multivariate $P$- or $Q$-polynomial structure with respect to an elimination-type monomial order. This provides a direct bridge between the classical theory of block and quotient schemes for imprimitive association schemes and elimination theory in computational commutative algebra. For an imprimitive multivariate $P$- or $Q$-polynomial association scheme, we determine the induced multivariate polynomial structures on the quotient and block schemes and describe their associated polynomials via explicit specializations, variable deletions, and rescalings of the original associated polynomials. At the level of zero-dimensional ideals, we show that the ideal of the block scheme is exactly an elimination ideal, whereas the ideal of the quotient scheme is obtained by adjoining the valency relations for the eliminated variables and then eliminating. As applications, we study direct products and crested products from the viewpoint of multivariate polynomiality, and we characterize the schemes that are multivariate $P$- or $Q$-polynomial with respect to every monomial order as precisely the direct products of univariate $P$- or $Q$-polynomial schemes. We also discuss formal duality, composition series, and several related open problems.
Growth of infinite frieze patterns of affine type
We analyse the growth coefficients of infinite frieze patterns arising from cluster algebras using cluster modular groups and cluster categories. For a fixed cluster category of affine type, we prove that the collection of infinite frieze patterns given by both the homogeneous and non-homogeneous stable tubes all have the same growth coefficients. We also derive and verify an explicit formula for the $k$-th growth coefficient, expressed directly in terms of data from homogeneous tubes, or, alternatively, from appropriate elements of the corresponding cluster algebra.
Pascal, Catalan, Motzkin triangles and tensor product multiplicities
The main purpose of this note is to provide an elementary discussion of some simple triangles of integer numbers in particular through their connections with representation theory of $sl_2$. The triangles under consideration are the Catalan triangle and the Motzkin triangle together with their generalisations that we introduce here. We advocate the point of view that these triangles are given by the well-known and classical Pascal rule starting from a well-chosen initial condition. We give an elementary derivation of the fact that the numbers in these triangles are multiplicities appearing in tensor products of $sl_2$-representations and that they are simply expressed as a difference of generalised binomial coefficients. We also take the opportunity to discuss the ``sum of squares'' phenomenon that happens in these triangles through the lense of representation theory.
Geometric structures of $G$-fans associated with rank $3$ cluster-cyclic exchange matrices
In this paper, we investigate the geometric structures of $G$-fans associated with rank $3$ real cluster-cyclic exchange matrices. In this class, a simple recursion for tropical signs was found, which enables us to study the detailed properties of $c$-, $g$-vectors. We introduce two kinds of upper bounds of the $G$-fans. The first one is the global upper bound, which comes from a hyperbolic surface containing all $g$-vectors after an initial mutation. The second one is the local upper bound, which reflects the internal separateness structure. As applications, we prove that there is no periodicity among $g$-vectors, and we completely determine the sign of $g$-vectors. We also prove the monotonicity of $g$-vectors under the minimum assumption. Moreover, we show that the three global upper bounds can be simplified to a single uniform upper bound.
Maximal green sequences for quantum and Poisson CGL extensions
We prove that the quantum and classical cluster algebras for all members of the axiomatically defined classes of symmetric quantum and Poisson Cauchon-Goodearl-Letzter extensions possess maximal green sequences in the sense of Keller. Previously, maximal green sequences were constructed for explicit families of cluster algebras; many of those can be recovered from the general result for CGL extensions.
Group and algebra hyperdeterminant
In 1896, Dedekind posed the problem of factoring the group determinant in the non-abelian case to Frobenius, whose solution sparked the birth of finite-group representation theory. Several decades earlier, Cayley introduced the notion of the combinatorial hyperdeterminant of a $d$-way tensor, which is the most natural generalization of an ordinary determinant. In this note, we solve the problem of factoring the group hyperdeterminant. We reduce the computation of the group hyperdeterminant to the computation of the hyperdeterminant at the matrix multiplication tensor and derive a nice closed formula. Further, we extend this notion to associative algebra tensors and show that this polynomial is nonzero if and only if the algebra is semisimple.
Ramanujan Complexes from Unitary Groups over Number Fields
In this article, we construct new families of Ramanujan complexes with local structure distinct from all previously known examples. Our approach is based on unitary groups over number fields, more specifically on what we call super-definite unitary groups, that is definite unitary groups that are anisotropic modulo their center at a finite place. These arise naturally as groups of units in central division algebras with involution of the second kind.
Our first main result gives a general construction of infinite families of Ramanujan complexes associated with a super-definite unitary group $G$ over a totally real number field and a finite place $v_0$. The structure of the resulting complex is governed by the type of the Bruhat-Tits building at $v_0$. It includes new examples of type $A_n$ when $v_0$ is split, and novel families of type ${}^2\!A'_n$, ${}^2 \! A''_n$ (with $n$ even), $B$-$C_n$, ${}^2 \! B$-$C_n$ and $C$-$BC_n$ in the non-split case. This construction works uniformly across all ranks.
Since much of the motivation for constructing expander complexes comes from computer science, we investigate the algorithmic explicitness of our construction in the latter part of the paper, and provide an example in rank 5 where it becomes fully explicit. In particular, this example yields golden gates for the real Lie group $PU(5)$.
