Descents and inversions in powers of permutations
In this paper, we generalise several recent results by Archer and Geary on descents in powers of permutations, and confirm all their conjectures. Specifically, for all $k\in\mathbb{Z}^+$, we prove explicit formulas for the expected numbers of descents and inversions in the $k$-th powers of permutations in $\mathcal{S}_n$ for all $n\geq2k+1$. We also compute the number of Grassmanian permutations in $\mathcal{S}_n$ whose $k$-th powers remain Grassmanian, and the number of permutations in $\mathcal{S}_n$ whose $k$-th powers have the maximum number of descents.

On the asymptotic enumeration and limit shapes of monotone grid classes of permutations
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 27:1, Permutation Patterns 2024, Special issues (June 30, 2025) dmtcs:14018 • View PublicationBIB
We exhibit a procedure to asymptotically enumerate monotone grid classes of permutations. This is then applied to compute the asymptotic number of permutations in any connected one-corner class. Our strategy consists of enumerating the gridded permutations, finding the asymptotic distribution of points between the cells in a typical large gridded permutation, and analysing in detail the ways in which a typical permutation can be gridded. We also determine the limit shape of any connected monotone grid class.

Permutation Wordle
We introduce a guessing game, permutation Wordle, in which a guesser attempts to recover a hidden permutation in $S_n$. In each round, the guesser guesses a permutation (using information from previous rounds) and is told which entries of that permutation are correct. We describe a natural guessing strategy, which we believe to be optimal. We show that the number of permutations this strategy solves in $k+1$ rounds is the Eulerian number $A(n,k)$. We also describe an extension to suited permutations: the setter chooses a permutation in $S_n$ and also a coloring of $[n]$ using $s$ colors. We generalize our strategy, give a recurrence for the number of suited permutations solved in $k+1$ rounds, and relate these numbers to the Eulerian numbers. In the case of two suits, or signed permutations, we also relate these numbers to the Eulerian numbers of type B.

The Wide Band Cayley Continuants
The Cayley continuants are referred to the determinants of tridiagonal matrices in connection with the Sylvester continuants. Munarini-Torri found a striking combinatorial interpretation of the Cayley continuants in terms of the joint distribution of the number of odd cycles and the number of even cycles of permutations of $[n]=\{1,2,\ldots, n\}$. In view of a general setting, $r$-regular cycles (with length not divisible by $r$) and $r$-singular cycles (with length divisible by $r$) have been extensively studied largely related to roots of permutations. We introduce the wide band Cayley continuants as an extension of the original Cayley continuants, and we show that they can be interpreted in terms of the joint distribution of the number of $r$-regular cycles and the number of $r$-singular cycles over permutations of $[n]$.

A strengthening of McConnel's theorem on permutations over finite fields
Published in Canad. Math. Bull. 68 (2025), no. 1, 213-218 • View PublicationBIB
Let $p$ be a prime, $q=p^n$, and $D \subset \mathbb{F}_q^*$. A celebrated result of McConnel states that if $D$ is a proper subgroup of $\mathbb{F}_q^*$, and $f:\mathbb{F}_q \to \mathbb{F}_q$ is a function such that $(f(x)-f(y))/(x-y) \in D$ whenever $x \neq y$, then $f(x)$ necessarily has the form $ax^{p^j}+b$. In this notes, we give a sufficient condition on $D$ to obtain the same conclusion on $f$. In particular, we show that McConnel's theorem extends if $D$ has small doubling.
Grothendieck Shenanigans: Permutons from pipe dreams via integrable probability
We study random permutations arising from reduced pipe dreams. Our main model is motivated by Grothendieck polynomials with parameter $β=1$ arising in K-theory of the flag variety. The probability weight of a permutation is proportional to the principal specialization (setting all variables to 1) of the corresponding Grothendieck polynomial. By mapping this random permutation to a version of TASEP (Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process), we describe the limiting permuton and fluctuations around it as the order $n$ of the permutation grows to infinity. The fluctuations are of order $n^{\frac13}$ and have the Tracy-Widom GUE distribution, which places this algebraic (K-theoretic) model into the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class. We also investigate non-reduced pipe dreams and make progress on a recent open problem on the asymptotic number of inversions of the resulting permutation. Inspired by Stanley's question for the maximal value of principal specializations of Schubert polynomials, we resolve the analogous question for $β=1$ Grothendieck polynomials, and provide bounds for general $β$.

Sign-balance of excedances over mod-k-alternating permutations and gamma-positivity
A permutation is called mod-k-alternating if its entries are restricted to having the same remainder as the index, modulo some integer $k \geq 1.$ In this paper, we find the sign-balance for mod-k-alternating permutations with respect to the statistic excedance. Moreover, we study the sign-balance for excedances over mod-k-alternating derangements. The results are obtained by constructing suitable matrices and connecting their determinants with the signed excedance enumeration of mod-k-alternating permutations. As an application of the signed excedance enumeration, we prove that when $n \equiv k \pmod {2k}$, the excedance enumerating polynomials over the even and odd mod-k-alternating permutations, starting with a fixed remainder, are gamma-positive.

Cardinalities of irredundant bases of finite primitive groups
Let $G$ be a finite permutation group acting on a set $Ω$. An ordered sequence $(ω_1,\ldots,ω_\ell)$ of elements of $Ω$ is an irredundant base for $G$ if the pointwise stabilizer of the sequence is trivial and no point is fixed by the stabilizer of its predecessors. We show that any interval of natural numbers can be realized as the set of cardinalities of irredundant bases for some finite primitive group.

Smooth Points on Positroid Varieties
In the Grassmannian $Gr_{\mathbb{C}}(k,n)$ we have positroid varieties $Π_f$, each indexed by a bounded affine permutation $f$ and containing torus-fixed points $λ\in Π_f$. In this paper we consider the partially ordered set consisting of quadruples $(k,n,Π_f,λ)$ (or \textit{(positroid) pairs} $(Π_f,λ)$ for short). The partial order is the ordering given by the covering relation $\lessdot$ where $(Π_f',λ') \lessdot (Π_f,λ)$ if $Π_f'$ is obtained by $Π_f$ by \textit{deletion} or \textit{contraction.} Using the results of Snider [2010], we know that positroid varieties can be studied in a neighborhood of each of these points by \textit{affine pipe dreams.} Our main theorem provides a quick test of when a positroid variety is smooth at one of these given points. It is sufficient to test smoothness of a positroid variety by using the main result to test smoothness at each of these points. These results can also be applied to the question of whether Schubert varieties in flag manifolds are smooth at points given by 321-avoiding permutations, as studied in Graham/Kreimer [2020]. We have a secondary result, which describes the minimal singular positroid pairs in our ordering - these are the positroid pairs where any deletion or contraction causes it to become smooth.
Pattern-avoiding Cayley permutations via combinatorial species
A Cayley permutation is a word of positive integers such that if a letter appears in this word, then all positive integers smaller than that letter also appear. We initiate a systematic study of pattern avoidance on Cayley permutations adopting a combinatorial species approach. Our methods lead to species equations, generating series, and counting formulas for Cayley permutations avoiding any pattern of length at most three. We also introduce the species of primitive structures as a generalization of Cayley permutations with no "flat steps". Finally, we explore various notions of Wilf equivalence arising in this context.

Upper bounds for measures on distal classes
In recent work, Harman and Snowden introduced a notion of measure on a Fraïssé class $\mathfrak{F}$, and showed how such measures lead to interesting tensor categories. Constructing and classifying measures is a difficult problem, and so far only a handful of cases have been worked out. In this paper, we obtain some of the first general results on measures. Our main theorem states that if $\mathfrak{F}$ is distal (in the sense of Simon), and there are some bounds on automorphism groups, then $\mathfrak{F}$ admits only finitely many measures; moreover, we give an effective upper bound on their number. For example, if $\mathfrak{F}$ is the class of ``$s$-dimensional permutations'' (finite sets equipped with $s$ total orders), we show that the number of measures is bounded above by approximately $\exp(\exp(s^2 \log{s}))$.

Some properties of the Redei-Berge function and related combinatorial Hopf algebras
Stanley and Grinberg introduced the symmetric function associated to digraphs, called the Redei-Berge symmetric function. In [8] is shown that this symmetric function arises from a suitable structure of combinatorial Hopf algebra on digraphs. In this paper, we introduce two new combinatorial Hopf algebras of posets and permutations and define corresponding Redei-Berge functions for them. By using both theories, of symmetric functions and of combinatorial Hopf algebras, we prove many properties of the Redei-Berge function. These include some forms of deletion-contraction property, which make it similar to the chromatic symmetric function. We also find some invariants of digraphs that are detected by the Redei-Berge function.

Major Index on Catalan Combinatorics
We study the two statistics, the inversion number and the major index, on Catalan combinatorial objects such as $r$-Dyck paths, $r$-Stirling permutations, non-crossing partitions, Dyck tilings, and symmetric Dyck paths. We show that they are equidistributed with the inversion number or the major index on Dyck paths.

Some $3$-designs invariant under $2.PΣL(2,49).$
We construct a ternary [49,25,7] code from the row span of a Jacobsthal matrix. It is equivalent to a Generalized Quadratic Residue (GQR) code in the sense of van Lint and MacWilliams (1978). These codes are the abelian generalizations of the quadratic residue (QR) codes which are cyclic. The union of the [50,25,8] extension of the said code and its dual supports a 3-(50,14,1248) design. The automorphism group of the latter design is a double cover of the permutation part of the automorphism group of the [50,25,8] code, which is isomorphic to $PΣL(2,49).$ Other weights in this code, other GQR codes, and other QR codes yield other 3-designs by the same process. A simple group action argument is provided to explain this behaviour of isodual codes.

Inference of rankings planted in random tournaments
We consider the problem of inferring an unknown ranking of $n$ items from a random tournament on $n$ vertices whose edge directions are correlated with the ranking. We establish, in terms of the strength of these correlations, the computational and statistical thresholds for detection (deciding whether an observed tournament is purely random or drawn correlated with a hidden ranking) and recovery (estimating the hidden ranking with small error in Spearman's footrule or Kendall's tau metric on permutations). Notably, we find that this problem provides a new instance of a detection-recovery gap: solving the detection problem requires much weaker correlations than solving the recovery problem. In establishing these thresholds, we also identify simple algorithms for detection (thresholding a degree 2 polynomial) and recovery (outputting a ranking by the number of "wins" of a tournament vertex, i.e., the out-degree) that achieve optimal performance up to constants in the correlation strength. For detection, we find that the above low-degree polynomial algorithm is superior to a natural spectral algorithm. We also find that, whenever it is possible to achieve strong recovery (i.e., to estimate with vanishing error in the above metrics) of the hidden ranking, then the above "Ranking By Wins" algorithm not only does so, but also outputs a close approximation of the maximum likelihood estimator, a task that is NP-hard in the worst case.
Disconnected Cliques in Derangement Graphs
We obtain a correspondence between pairs of $N\times N$ orthogonal Latin squares and pairs of disconnected maximal cliques in the derangement graph with $N$ symbols. Motivated by methods in spectral clustering, we also obtain modular conditions on fixed point counts of certain permutation sums for the existence of collections of mutually disconnected maximal cliques. We use these modular obstructions to analyze the structure of maximal cliques in $X_N$ for small values of $N$. We culminate in a short, elementary proof of the nonexistence of a solution to Euler's $36$ Officer Problem.

Entropy factorization via curvature
We develop a new framework for establishing approximate factorization of entropy on arbitrary probability spaces, using a geometric notion known as non-negative sectional curvature. The resulting estimates are equivalent to entropy subadditivity and generalized Brascamp-Lieb inequalities, and provide a sharp modified log-Sobolev inequality for the Gibbs sampler of several particle systems in both continuous and discrete settings. The method allows us to obtain simple proofs of known results, as well as some new inequalities. We illustrate this through various applications, including discrete Gaussian free fields on arbitrary networks, the down-up walk on uniform $n$-sets, the uniform measure over permutations, and the uniform measure on the unit sphere in $\R^n$. Our method also yields a simple, coupling-based proof of the celebrated logarithmic Sobolev inequality for Langevin diffusions in a convex potential, which is one of the most emblematic applications of the Bakry-Émery criterion.

Growth Rates Of Permutations With Given Descent Or Peak Set
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, 2025 • Search Publication
Given a set $I \subseteq \mathbb{N}$, consider the sequences $\{d_n(I)\},\{p_n(I)\}$ where for any $n$, $d_n(I)$ and $p_n(I)$ respectively count the number of permutations in the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ whose descent set (respectively peak set) is $I \cap [n-1]$. We investigate the growth rates $\text{gr} \ d_n(I) = \lim_{n \to \infty} \left(d_n(I)/n!\right)^{1/n}$ and $\text{gr} \ p_n(I) = \lim_{n \to \infty} \left(p_n(I)/n!\right)^{1/n}$ over all $I \subseteq \mathbb{N}$. Our main contributions are two-fold. Firstly, we prove that the numbers $\text{gr} \ d_n(I)$ over all $I \subseteq \mathbb{N}$ are exactly the interval $\left[0,2/π\right]$. To do so, we construct an algorithm that explicitly builds $I$ for any desired limit $L$ in the interval. Secondly, we prove that the numbers $\text{gr} \ p_n(I)$ for periodic sets $I \subseteq \mathbb{N}$ form a dense set in $\left[0,1/\sqrt[3]{3}\right]$. We do this by explicitly finding, for any prescribed $L$ in the interval, a set $I$ whose corresponding growth rate is arbitrarily close to $L$.

Real toric manifolds associated with chordal nestohedra
This paper investigates the rational Betti numbers of real toric manifolds associated with chordal nestohedra. We consider the poset topology of a specific poset induced from a chordal building set, and show its EL-shellability. Based on this, we present an explicit description using alternating $\mathcal{B}$-permutations for a chordal building set $\mathcal{B}$, transforming the computing Betti numbers into a counting problem. This approach allows us to compute the $a$-number of a finite simple graph through permutation counting when the graph is chordal. In addition, we provide detailed computations for specific cases such as real Hochschild varieties corresponding to Hochschild polytopes.

Wigglyhedra
Published in Math. Z. 310(3), Paper No. 54, 2025 • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by categorical representation theory, we define the wiggly complex, whose vertices are arcs wiggling around $n+2$ points on a line, and whose faces are sets of wiggly arcs which are pairwise pointed and non-crossing. The wiggly complex is a $(2n-1)$-dimensional pseudomanifold, whose facets are wiggly pseudotriangulations. We show that wiggly pseudotriangulations are in bijection with wiggly permutations, which are permutations of $[2n]$ avoiding the patterns $(2j-1) \cdots i \cdots (2j)$ for $i < 2j-1$ and $(2j) \cdots k \cdots (2j-1)$ for $k > 2j$. These permutations define the wiggly lattice, an induced sublattice of the weak order. We then prove that the wiggly complex is isomorphic to the boundary complex of the polar of the wigglyhedron, for which we give explicit and simple vertex and facet descriptions. Interestingly, we observe that any Cambrian associahedron is normally equivalent to a well-chosen face of the wigglyhedron. Finally, we recall the correspondence of wiggly arcs with objects in a category, and we develop categorical criteria for a subset of wiggly arcs to form a face of the wiggly complex.
