We use Young's raising operators to introduce and study double eta polynomials, which are an even orthogonal analogue of Wilson's double theta polynomials. Our double eta polynomials give Giambelli formulas which represent the equivariant Schubert classes in the torus-equivariant cohomology ring of even orthogonal Grassmannians, and specialize to the single eta polynomials of Buch, Kresch, and the author.

This paper considers three separate matrices associated to graphs and (each dimension of) cell complexes. It relates all the coefficients of their respective characteristic polynomials to the geometric and combinatorial enumeration of three kinds of subobjects. The matrices are: the mesh matrix for integral d-cycles of Trent, the mesh matrix for integral d-boundaries, and the Kirchhoff matrix, i.e., the combinatorial Laplacian, for integral (d-1)-chains. Relations to Reidemeister-Franz torsion are elucidated and relations to the foundational work of R. Lyons and G. Kalai.
Approximation Algorithm for the Binary-Preference Capacitated Selfish Replication Game and a Tight Bound on its Price of Anarchy

We consider the capacitated selfish replication (CSR) game with binary preferences, over general undirected networks. We first show that such games have an associated ordinary potential function, and hence always admit a pure-strategy Nash equilibrium (NE). Further, when the minimum degree of the network and the number of resources are of the same order, there exists an exact polynomial time algorithm which can find a NE. Following this, we study the price of anarchy of such games, and show that it is bounded above by 3; we further provide some instances for which the price of anarchy is at least 2. We develop a quasi-polynomial algorithm O(n^2D^{ln n}), where n is the number of players and D is the diameter of the network, which can find, in a distributed manner, an allocation profile that is within a constant factor of the optimal allocation, and hence of any pure-strategy NE of the game. Proof of this result uses a novel potential function.

We show the classical $q$-Stirling numbers of the second kind can be expressed compactly as a pair of statistics on a subset of restricted growth words. The resulting expressions are polynomials in $q$ and $1+q$. We extend this enumerative result via a decomposition of a new poset $Π(n,k)$ which we call the Stirling poset of the second kind. Its rank generating function is the $q$-Stirling number $S_q[n,k]$. The Stirling poset of the second kind supports an algebraic complex and a basis for integer homology is determined. A parallel enumerative, poset theoretic and homological study for the $q$-Stirling numbers of the first kind is done. Letting $t = 1+q$ we give a bijective argument showing the $(q,t)$-Stirling numbers of the first and second kind are orthogonal.
Polynomial Expressions of Carries in p-ary Arithmetics
It is known that any $n$-variable function on a finite prime field of characteristic $p$ can be expressed as a polynomial over the same field with at most $p^n$ monomials. However, it is not obvious to determine the polynomial for a given concrete function. In this paper, we study the concrete polynomial expressions of the carries in addition and multiplication of $p$-ary integers. For the case of addition, our result gives a new family of symmetric polynomials, which generalizes the known result for the binary case $p = 2$ where the carries are given by elementary symmetric polynomials. On the other hand, for the case of multiplication of $n$ single-digit integers, we give a simple formula of the polynomial expression for the carry to the next digit using the Bernoulli numbers, and show that it has only $(n+1)(p-1)/2 + 1$ monomials, which is significantly fewer than the worst-case number $p^n$ of monomials for general functions. We also discuss applications of our results to cryptographic computation on encrypted data.

We describe a method, based on the theory of Macdonald-Koornwinder polynomials, for proving bounded Littlewood identities. Our approach provides an alternative to Macdonald's partial fraction technique and results in the first examples of bounded Littlewood identities for Macdonald polynomials. These identities, which take the form of decomposition formulas for Macdonald polynomials of type $(R,S)$ in terms of ordinary Macdonald polynomials, are $q,t$-analogues of known branching formulas for characters of the symplectic, orthogonal and special orthogonal groups. In the classical limit, our method implies that MacMahon's famous ex-conjecture for the generating function of symmetric plane partitions in a box follows from the identification of $(\mathrm{GL}(n,\mathbb{R}),\mathrm{O}(n))$ as a Gelfand pair. As further applications, we obtain combinatorial formulas for characters of affine Lie algebras; Rogers-Ramanujan identities for affine Lie algebras, complementing recent results of Griffin et al.; and quadratic transformation formulas for Kaneko--Macdonald-type basic hypergeometric series.
A categorification of the chromatic symmetric function

The Stanley chromatic symmetric function $X_G$ of a graph $G$ is a symmetric function generalization of the chromatic polynomial, and has interesting combinatorial properties. We apply the ideas of Khovanov homology to construct a homology of graded $S_n$-modules, whose graded Frobenius series $Frob_G(q,t)$ reduces to the chromatic symmetric function at $q=t=1$. This homology can be thought of as a categorification of the chromatic symmetric function, and provides a homological analogue of several familiar properties of $X_G$. In particular, the decomposition formula for $X_G$ discovered recently by Orellana and Scott, and Guay-Paquet is lifted to a long exact sequence in homology.
Ramanujan Coverings of Graphs

Let $G$ be a finite connected graph, and let $ρ$ be the spectral radius of its universal cover. For example, if $G$ is $k$-regular then $ρ=2\sqrt{k-1}$. We show that for every $r$, there is an $r$-covering (a.k.a. an $r$-lift) of $G$ where all the new eigenvalues are bounded from above by $ρ$. It follows that a bipartite Ramanujan graph has a Ramanujan $r$-covering for every $r$. This generalizes the $r=2$ case due to Marcus, Spielman and Srivastava (2013).
Every $r$-covering of $G$ corresponds to a labeling of the edges of $G$ by elements of the symmetric group $S_{r}$. We generalize this notion to labeling the edges by elements of various groups and present a broader scenario where Ramanujan coverings are guaranteed to exist.
In particular, this shows the existence of richer families of bipartite Ramanujan graphs than was known before. Inspired by Marcus-Spielman-Srivastava, a crucial component of our proof is the existence of interlacing families of polynomials for complex reflection groups. The core argument of this component is taken from a recent paper of them (2015).
Another important ingredient of our proof is a new generalization of the matching polynomial of a graph. We define the $r$-th matching polynomial of $G$ to be the average matching polynomial of all $r$-coverings of $G$. We show this polynomial shares many properties with the original matching polynomial. For example, it is real rooted with all its roots inside $\left[-ρ,ρ\right]$.

We construct the affine version of the Fomin-Kirillov algebra, called the affine FK algebra, to investigate the combinatorics of affine Schubert calculus for type $A$. We introduce Murnaghan-Nakayama elements and Dunkl elements in the affine FK algebra. We show that they are commutative as Bruhat operators, and the commutative algebra generated by these operators is isomorphic to the cohomology of the affine flag variety. We show that the cohomology of the affine flag variety is product of the cohomology of an affine Grassmannian and a flag variety, which are generated by MN elements and Dunkl elements respectively. The Schubert classes in cohomology of the affine Grassmannian (resp. the flag variety) can be identified with affine Schur functions (resp. Schubert polynomials) in a quotient of the polynomial ring. Affine Schubert polynomials, polynomial representatives of the Schubert class in the cohomology of the affine flag variety, can be defined in the product of two quotient rings using the Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand operators interpreted as divided difference operators acting on the affine Fomin-Kirillov algebra. As for other applications, we obtain Murnaghan-Nakayama rules both for the affine Schubert polynomials and affine Stanley symmetric functions. We also define $k$-strong-ribbon tableaux from Murnaghan-Nakayama elements to provide a new formula of $k$-Schur functions. This formula gives the character table of the representation of the symmetric group whose Frobenius characteristic image is the $k$-Schur function.

Bias vs structure of polynomials in large fields, and applications in information theory

Let $f$ be a polynomial of degree $d$ in $n$ variables over a finite field $\mathbb{F}$. The polynomial is said to be unbiased if the distribution of $f(x)$ for a uniform input $x \in \mathbb{F}^n$ is close to the uniform distribution over $\mathbb{F}$, and is called biased otherwise. The polynomial is said to have low rank if it can be expressed as a composition of a few lower degree polynomials. Green and Tao [Contrib. Discrete Math 2009] and Kaufman and Lovett [FOCS 2008] showed that bias implies low rank for fixed degree polynomials over fixed prime fields. This lies at the heart of many tools in higher order Fourier analysis. In this work, we extend this result to all prime fields (of size possibly growing with $n$). We also provide a generalization to nonprime fields in the large characteristic case. However, we state all our applications in the prime field setting for the sake of simplicity of presentation.
Using the above generalization to large fields as a starting point, we are also able to settle the list decoding radius of fixed degree Reed-Muller codes over growing fields. The case of fixed size fields was solved by Bhowmick and Lovett [STOC 2015], which resolved a conjecture of Gopalan-Klivans-Zuckerman [STOC 2008]. Here, we show that the list decoding radius is equal the minimum distance of the code for all fixed degrees, even when the field size is possibly growing with $n$.
Additionally, we effectively resolve the weight distribution problem for Reed-Muller codes of fixed degree over all fields, first raised in 1977 in the classic textbook by MacWilliams and Sloane [Research Problem 15.1 in Theory of Error Correcting Codes].
A family of symmetric functions associated with Stirling permutations
We present exponential generating function analogues to two classical identities involving the ordinary generating function of the complete homogeneous symmetric functions. After a suitable specialization the new identities reduce to identities involving the first and second order Eulerian polynomials. The study of these identities led us to consider a family of symmetric functions associated with a class of permutations introduced by Gessel and Stanley, known in the literature as Stirling permutations. In particular, we define certain type statistics on Stirling permutations that refine the statistics of descents, ascents and plateaux and we show that their refined versions are equidistributed, generalizing a result of Bóna. The definition of this family of symmetric functions extends to the generality of $r$-Stirling permutations. We discuss some occurrences of these symmetric functions in the cases of $r=1$ and $r=2$.
Snake graph calculus and cluster algebras from surfaces III: Band graphs and snake rings
We introduce several commutative rings, the snake rings, that have strong connections to cluster algebras. The elements of these rings are residue classes of unions of certain labeled graphs that were used to construct canonical bases in the theory of cluster algebras. We obtain several rings by varying the conditions on the structure as well as the labelling of the graphs. The most restrictive form of this ring is isomorphic to the ring $\mathbb{Z}[x,y]$ of polynomials in two variables over the integers. A more general form contains all cluster algebras of unpunctured surface type.
The definition of the rings requires the snake graph calculus which is completed in this paper building on two earlier articles on the subject. Identities in the snake ring correspond to bijections between the posets of perfect matchings of the graphs. One of the main results of the current paper is the completion of the explicit construction of these bijections.

This paper gives an explicit formula for the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial of certain 2-dimensional polyhedra in terms of invariants of surface quotient singularities. Also, a formula for the dimension of the space of quasi-homogeneous polynomials of a given degree is derived. This admits an interpretation as a Numerical Adjunction Formula for singular curves on the weighted projective plane.

We consider the concept of irreducible meandric system introduced by Lando and Zvonkin. We place this concept in the lattice framework of NC(n). As a consequence, we show that the even generating function for irreducible meandric systems is the R-transform of XY, where X and Y are classically (commuting) independent random variables, and each of X,Y has centred semicircular distribution of variance 1. Following this point of view, we make some observations about the symmetric linear functional on polynomials which has R-transform given by the even generating function for meanders.

To each prime ideal in a polynomial ring over a field we associate an algebraic matroid and show that it is preserved under tropicalization. This gives a necessary condition for a tropical variety to be set-theoretically realizable from a prime ideal. We also show that there are infinitely many Bergman fans that are not set-theoretically realizable as the tropicalization of any ideal.

We show that doubling at some large scale in a Cayley graph implies uniform doubling at all subsequent scales. The proof is based on the structure theorem for approximate subgroups proved by Green, Tao and the first author. We also give a number of applications to the geometry and spectrum of finite Cayley graphs. For example, we show that a finite group has moderate growth in the sense of Diaconis and Saloff-Coste if and only if its diameter is larger than a fixed power of the cardinality of the group. We call such groups almost flat and show that they have a subgroup of bounded index admitting a cyclic quotient of comparable diameter. We also give bounds on the Cheeger constant, first eigenvalue of the Laplacian, and mixing time. This can be seen as a finite-group version of Gromov's theorem on groups with polynomial growth. It also improves on a result of Lackenby regarding property (tau) in towers of coverings. Another consequence is a universal upper bound on the diameter of all finite simple groups, independent of the CFSG.

We call an n-tuple Q_1, ..., Q_n of positive definite nxn matrices alpha-conditioned for some alpha > 1 if the ratio of the largest among the eigenvalues of Q_1, ..., Q_n to the smallest among the eigenvalues of Q_1, ..., Q_n does not exceed alpha. An n-tuple is called doubly stochastic if the sum of Q_i is the identity matrix and the trace of each Q_i is 1. We prove that for any fixed alpha > 1 the mixed discriminant of an alpha-conditioned doubly stochastic n-tuple is n^{O(1)} e^{-n}. As a corollary, for any alpha > 1 fixed in advance, we obtain a polynomial time algorithm approximating the mixed discriminant of an alpha-conditioned n-tuple within a polynomial in n factor.

It is shown that, for each $d \geq 4$, there exists an integral convex polytope $\mathcal{P}$ of dimension $d$ such that each of the coefficients of $n, n^{2}, \ldots, n^{d-2}$ of its Ehrhart polynomial $i(\mathcal{P},n)$ is negative. Moreover, it is also shown that for each $d \geq 3$ and $1 \leq k \leq d-2$, there exists an integral convex polytope $\mathcal{P}$ of dimension $d$ such that the coefficient of $n^k$ of the Ehrhart polynomial $i(\mathcal{P},n)$ of $\mathcal{P}$ is negative and all its remaining coefficients are positive. Finally, we consider all the possible sign patterns of the coefficients of the Ehrhart polynomials of low dimensional integral convex polytopes.

We show that the density $μ$ of the Smith normal form (SNF) of a random integer matrix exists and equals a product of densities $μ_{p^s}$ of SNF over $\mathbb{Z}/p^s\mathbb{Z}$ with $p$ a prime and $s$ some positive integer. Our approach is to connect the SNF of a matrix with the greatest common divisors (gcds) of certain polynomials of matrix entries, and develop the theory of multi-gcd distribution of polynomial values at a random integer vector. We also derive a formula for $μ_{p^s}$ and compute the density $μ$ for several interesting types of sets. Finally, we determine the maximum and minimum of $μ_{p^s}$ and establish its monotonicity properties and limiting behaviors.
