Schur positivity and log-concavity related to longest increasing subsequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
Chen proposed a conjecture on the log-concavity of the generating function for the symmetric group with respect to the length of longest increasing subsequences of permutations. Motivated by Chen's log-concavity conjecture, Bóna, Lackner and Sagan further studied similar problems by restricting the whole symmetric group to certain of its subsets. They obtained the log-concavity of the corresponding generating functions for these subsets by using the hook-length formula. In this paper, we generalize and prove their results by establishing the Schur positivity of certain symmetric functions. This also enables us to propose a new approach to Chen's original conjecture.

On the Enumeration of Circulant Graphs of Prime-Power Order: the case of $p^3$
A well-known problem in Algebraic Combinatorics, is the enumeration of circulant graphs. The failure of Adam's Conjecture for such graphs with order containing a repeated prime, led researchers to investigate the problem using two different methods, namely the multiplier method and the structural method. The former makes use of isomorphism theorems whereas the latter involves Schur rings. Both these methods have already been used to count the number of non-isomorphic circulants of order $p^2$. This research focuses on the extension of these two methods to enumerate circulants of order $p^3$, in particular for $p=3$ and $p=5$, through the use of the computer package GAP.

Newton Polytopes in Algebraic Combinatorics
Published in Selecta Math. (N.S.) 25 (2019), no. 5, Art. 66, 37 pp • View PublicationBIB
A polynomial has saturated Newton polytope (SNP) if every lattice point of the convex hull of its exponent vectors corresponds to a monomial. We compile instances of SNP in algebraic combinatorics (some with proofs, others conjecturally): skew Schur polynomials; symmetric polynomials associated to reduced words, Redfield--Polya theory, Witt vectors, and totally nonnegative matrices; resultants; discriminants (up to quartics); Macdonald polynomials; key polynomials; Demazure atoms; Schubert polynomials; and Grothendieck polynomials, among others. Our principal construction is the Schubitope. For any subset of [n] x [n], we describe it by linear inequalities. This generalized permutahedron conjecturally has positive Ehrhart polynomial. We conjecture it describes the Newton polytope of Schubert and key polynomials. We also define dominance order on permutations and study its poset-theoretic properties.
The Smith normal form of a specialized Giambelli-type matrix
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the study of determinant formulas for Schur functions, Hamel and Goulden introduced a class of Giambelli-type matrices with respect to outside decompositions of partition diagrams, which unify the Jacobi-Trudi matrices, the Giambelli matrices and the Lascoux-Pragacz matrices. Stanley determined the Smith normal form of a specialized Jacobi-Trudi matrix. Motivated by Stanley's work, we obtain the Smith normal form of a specialized Giambelli matrix and a specialized Lascoux-Pragacz matrix. Furthermore, we show that, for a given partition, the Smith normal form of any specialized Giambelli-type matrix can be obtained from that of the corresponding specialization of the classical Giambelli matrix by a sequence of stabilization operations.

Dual wavefunction of the symplectic ice
Published in Reports on Mathematical Physics 80 (2017) 391-414 • View PublicationBIB
The wavefunction of the free-fermion six-vertex model was found to give a natural realization of the Tokuyama combinatorial formula for the Schur polynomials by Bump-Brubaker-Friedberg. Recently, we studied the correspondence between the dual version of the wavefunction and the Schur polynomials, which gave rise to another combinatorial formula. In this paper, we extend the analysis to the reflecting boundary condition, and show the exact correspondence between the dual wavefunction and the symplectic Schur functions. This gives a dual version of the integrable model realization of the symplectic Schur functions by Ivanov. We also generalize to the correspondence between the wavefunction, the dual wavefunction of the six-vertex model and the factorial symplectic Schur functions by the inhomogeneous generalization of the model.

The method of weighted words revisited
Alladi and Gordon introduced the method of weighted words in 1993 to prove a refinement and generalisation of Schur's partition identity. Together with Andrews, they later used it to refine Capparelli's and Göllnitz' identities too. In this paper, we present a new variant of this method, which can be used to study more complicated partition identities, and apply it to prove refinements and generalisations of three partition identities. The first one, Siladić's theorem (2002), comes from vertex operator algebras. The second one, a conjectural identity of Primc (1999), comes from crystal base theory. The last one is a very general identity about coloured overpartitions which generalises and unifies several generalisations of Schur's theorem due to Alladi-Gordon, Andrews, Corteel-Lovejoy, Lovejoy and the author.

Planar graphs and Stanley's Chromatic Functions
This article is dedicated to the study of positivity phenomena for the chromatic symmetric function of a graph with respect to various bases of symmetric functions. We give a new proof of Gasharov's theorem on the Schur-positivity of the chromatic symmetric function of a $(3 + 1)$-free poset. We present a combinatorial interpretation of the Schur-coefficients in terms of planar networks. Compared to Gasharov's proof, it gives a clearer visual illustration of the cancellation procedures and is quite similar in spirit to the proof of monomial positivity of Schur functions via the Lindstrom-Gessel-Viennot lemma. We apply a similar device to the $e$-positivity problem of chromatic functions. Following Stanley, we analyze certain analogs of symmetric functions attached to graphs instead of working with chromatic symmetric functions of graphs directly. We introduce a new combinatorial object: the correct sequences of unit interval orders, and, using these, we reprove monomial positivity of $G$-analogues of the power sum symmetric functions.

Weak dual equivalence for polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We use dual equivalence to give a short, combinatorial proof that Stanley symmetric functions are Schur positive. We introduce weak dual equivalence, and use it to give a short, combinatorial proof that Schubert polynomials are key positive. To demonstrate further the utility of this new tool, we use weak dual equivalence to prove a nonnegative Littlewood--Richardson rule for the key expansion of the product of a key polynomial and a Schur polynomial, and to introduce skew key polynomials that, when skewed by a partition, expand nonnegatively in the key basis.

Multiplication of a Schubert polynomial by a Stanley symmetric polynomial
We prove, combinatorially, that the product of a Schubert polynomial by a Stanley symmetric polynomial is a truncated Schubert polynomial. Using Monk's rule, we derive a nonnegative combinatorial formula for the Schubert polynomial expansion of a truncated Schubert polynomial. Combining these results, we give a nonnegative combinatorial rule for the product of a Schubert and a Schur polynomial in the Schubert basis.

Shifted tableau switchings and shifted Littlewood-Richardson coefficients
We provide two shifted analogues of the tableau switching process due to Benkart, Sottile, and Stroomer, the shifted tableau switching process and the modified shifted tableau switching process. They are performed by applying a sequence of specially contrived elementary transformations called {\em switches} and turn out to have some spectacular properties. For instance, the maps induced from these algorithms are involutive and behave very nicely with respect to shifted Young tableaux whose reading words satisfy the lattice property. As an application, we give combinatorial interpretations of Schur $P$- and $Q$-function identities. We also demonstrate the relationship between the shifted tableau switching process and the shifted $J$-operation due to Worley.

A Type B Analogue to Ribbon Tableaux
Published in Journal of Combinatorics (2020) Volume 11, Number 1, pp. 169-202 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a shifted analogue of the ribbon tableaux defined by James and Kerber. For any positive integer $k$, we give a bijection between the $k$-ribbon fillings of a shifted shape and regular fillings of a $\lfloor k/2\rfloor$-tuple of shapes called its $k$-quotient. We also define the corresponding generating functions, and prove that they are symmetric, Schur positive and Schur $Q$-positive.

Macdonald polynomials and chromatic quasisymmetric functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We express the integral form Macdonald polynomials as a weighted sum of Shareshian and Wachs' chromatic quasisymmetric functions of certain graphs. Then we use known expansions of these chromatic quasisymmetric functions into Schur and power sum symmetric functions to provide Schur and power sum formulas for the integral form Macdonald polynomials. Since the (integral form) Jack polynomials are a specialization of integral form Macdonald polynomials, we obtain analogous formulas for Jack polynomials as corollaries.

Stability of the Heisenberg Product on Symmetric Functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Heisenberg product is an associative product defined on symmetric functions which interpolates between the usual product and the Kronecker product. In 1938, Murnaghan discovered that the Kronecker product of two Schur functions stabilizes. We prove an analogous result for the Heisenberg product of Schur functions.

Schur P-positivity and involution Stanley symmetric functions
Published in IMRN (2017), rnx274 • View PublicationBIB
The involution Stanley symmetric functions $\hat{F}_y$ are the stable limits of the analogues of Schubert polynomials for the orbits of the orthogonal group in the flag variety. These symmetric functions are also generating functions for involution words, and are indexed by the involutions in the symmetric group. By construction each $\hat{F}_y$ is a sum of Stanley symmetric functions and therefore Schur positive. We prove the stronger fact that these power series are Schur $P$-positive. We give an algorithm to efficiently compute the decomposition of $\hat{F}_y$ into Schur $P$-summands, and prove that this decomposition is triangular with respect to the dominance order on partitions. As an application, we derive pattern avoidance conditions which characterize the involution Stanley symmetric functions which are equal to Schur $P$-functions. We deduce as a corollary that the involution Stanley symmetric function of the reverse permutation is a Schur $P$-function indexed by a shifted staircase shape. These results lead to alternate proofs of theorems of Ardila-Serrano and DeWitt on skew Schur functions which are Schur $P$-functions. We also prove new Pfaffian formulas for certain related involution Schubert polynomials.

A comment of the combinatorics of the vertex operator $Γ_{(t|X)}$
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Jacobi--Trudi identity associates a symmetric function to any integer sequence. Let $Γ_{(t|X)}$ be the vertex operator defined by $Γ_{(t|X)} s_α=\sum_{n \in \mathbb{Z}} s_{(n,α)} [X] t^n$. We provide a combinatorial proof for the identity $Γ_{(t|X)} s_α= σ[tX] s_α\big[x-1/t\big] $ due to Thibon et al. We include an overview of all the combinatorial ideas behind this beautiful identity, including a combinatorial description for the expansion of $s_{(n,α)} [X] $ in the Schur basis, for any integer value of $n$.

Row bounds needed to justifiably express flagged Schur functions with Gessel-Viennot determinants
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 23 no. 1, Combinatorics (April 23, 2021) dmtcs:6632 • View PublicationBIB
Let $λ$ be a partition with no more than $n$ parts. Let $β$ be a weakly increasing $n$-tuple with entries from $\{ 1, ... , n \}$. The flagged Schur function in the variables $x_1, ... , x_n$ that is indexed by $λ$ and $β$ has been defined to be the sum of the content weight monomials for the semistandard Young tableaux of shape $λ$ whose values are row-wise bounded by the entries of $β$. Gessel and Viennot gave a determinant expression for the flagged Schur function indexed by $λ$ and $β$; this could be done since the pair $(λ, β)$ satisfied their "nonpermutable" condition for the sequence of terminals of an $n$-tuple of lattice paths that they used to model the tableaux. We generalize flagged Schur functions by dropping the requirement that $β$ be weakly increasing. Then for each $λ$ we give a condition on the entries of $β$ for the pair $(λ, β)$ to be nonpermutable that is both necessary and sufficient. When the parts of $λ$ are not distinct there will be multiple row bound $n$-tuples $β$ that will produce the same set of tableaux. We accordingly group the bounding $β$ into equivalence classes and identify the most efficient $β$ in each class for the determinant computation. We recently showed that many other sets of objects that are indexed by $n$ and $λ$ are enumerated by the number of these efficient $n$-tuples. We called these counts "parabolic Catalan numbers". It is noted that the $GL(n)$ Demazure characters (key polynomials) indexed by 312-avoiding permutations can also be expressed with these determinants.

Upper tails for arithmetic progressions in random subsets
Published in Israel Journal of Mathematics, 221 (2017), 317-365 • View PublicationBIB
We study the upper tail of the number of arithmetic progressions of a given length in a random subset of {1,...,n}, establishing exponential bounds which are best possible up to constant factors in the exponent. The proof also extends to Schur triples, and, more generally, to the number of edges in random induced subhypergraphs of `almost linear' k-uniform hypergraphs.

On the missing log in upper tail estimates
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory Series B 140 (2020), 98-146 • View PublicationBIB
In the late 1990s, Kim and Vu pioneered an inductive method for showing concentration of certain random variables X. Shortly afterwards, Janson and Ruci{ń}ski developed an alternative inductive approach, which often gives comparable results for the upper tail Pr(X \ge (1+\eps) E[X]). In some cases, both methods yield upper tail estimates which are best possible up to a logarithmic factor in the exponent, but closing this narrow gap has remained a technical challenge. In this paper we present a BK-inequality based combinatorial sparsification idea that can recover this missing logarithmic term in the upper tail. As an illustration, we consider random subsets of the integers {1,...,n}, and prove sharp upper tail estimates for various objects of interest in additive combinatorics. Examples include the number of arithmetic progressions, Schur triples, additive quadruples, and (r,s)-sums.

Heisenberg algebra, wedges and crystals

We explain how the action of the Heisenberg algebra on the space of q-deformed wedges yields the Heisenberg crystal structure on charged multipartitions, by using the boson-fermion correspondence and looking at the action of the Schur functions at q = 0. In addition, we give the explicit formula for computing this crystal in full generality.

Parabolic Catalan numbers count flagged Schur functions; Convexity of tableau sets for Demazure characters
Shuffles are n-multipermutations with suit multiplicities given by a subset R of {1,..,n-1}. Their inverses are ordered partitions of {1,..,n} whose block sizes derive from R. These "R-permutations" depict the min length coset reps for the quotient of S_n by the parabolic subgroup W_J, with J the complement of R. We refer to those that blockwise avoid the pattern 312 as "312-avoiding R-permutations" and define the "parabolic R-Catalan number" to be the number of them. Let lambda be a partition of N with at most n parts whose set of shape column lengths less than n is R. We show that the number of flagged Schur functions formed on the shape of lambda is this parabolic R-Catalan number, and list over a dozen other phenomena that are enumerated by it. Let pi be an R-permutation. We view the Demazure character (key polynomial) indexed by (lambda,pi) as the sum of the content weight monomials for our "pi-Demazure" semistandard tableaux of shape lambda with entries from {1,..,n}. We show that the set of these tableaux is convex in Z^N if and only if pi is a 312-avoiding R-permutation. A flagged Schur function is the sum of the content weight monomials for the semistandard tableaux of shape lambda whose entries are row-wise bounded by a given weakly increasing n-tuple. We consider general row bound sums for which the bounds may be any n-tuple. Reiner and Shimozono and then Postnikov and Stanley obtained results concerning coincidences between flagged Schur functions and Demazure characters: when lambda is strict, the flagged Schur functions exactly coincide with the 312-avoiding Demazure characters. For general lambda we introduce precise indexing sets of n-tuple bounds for the row bound sums. This and our convexity results are used to sharpen their coincidence results, to extend them to general row bound sums, and to show they hold at the deeper level of coinciding underlying tableau sets.
